Was enjoying it then...

I was enjoying this app as a way to learn a new board game. The interface requires the user to slow down and the difficulty level increases very slowly. Really good for people without a lot of experience in strategy. I kept wanting to look up each piece's properties because it is a lot to learn, but did not find a reference page. However, the app stopped working after I played one of the events. Now I can open the app but it takes a long time to load a game, saved or new, and then nothing responds to touch so I cannot play.

English mode please

This is a polished game with a lot of potential, and I’d like to get into it more. Two things holding it back are lots of unskippable animations that slow that game down a lot, and no good way to tell what the captured pieces are. I guess I could memorize the Kanji characters for each piece, but it would be a LOT more accessible if there was an option to replace those with “P”, “B”, “R”, etc. instead. Right now I’m just picking captured pieces blindly and then trying to make the best of it once they are on the game board.

Overall pretty great

It’s a pretty game with interesting mechanics and some pretty tough puzzles. The one thing that I really don’t like is the “advice” tool within those puzzles is based on the best overall move, but doesn’t help solve most of the puzzle criteria. The recent update to improve game pace is very beneficial, playing on base speed was very frustrating when you were stuck on a puzzle and the faster options are great.

I really like this game. One problem that is a deal breaker

I like this game, my problem is with hard stage 63. I have tried every possible iteration (took multiple hours) and it is not possible to earn the third star by completing in under 7 moves. I am a perfectionist with puzzle games like this. I need to have all puzzles completed perfectly. I have emailed support multiple times to inform them of the issue, but have not heard back. Hoping leaving a bad review will get their attention so I can get my last star…. Fundamentally this issue concerns me because it means I cannot necessarily trust that the benchmark for earning stars is possible, thus I don’t want to keep banging my head against a wall trying to perfect the puzzle, when it isn’t even possible. It makes me want to quit now so I don’t burn the time =[

Is there shogi in here somewhere?

I love Shogi, and when this popped up, I thought it was going to be a pretty way to play it… but instead it’s a long slog of puzzles so simple that I was falling asleep playing through them (in the hopes that there are some interesting ones eventually). As others have said, the animations need to be sped up, or even allow us to turn them off entirely, and it might be worth seeing how difficult it gets down the road… but in the mean time, I’ll just pass.

Animation time ruined the game for me.

I’d like this game a lot more if I could speed up animation time. I don’t need the computer to “think” and I don’t need to “confirm” that the opponents move was skipped. It’s a beautiful game but please let me play faster.

Too slow

Slow animations, even at 2x speed. Poor ui forcing unnecessary waits. Enemy has no pieces? You still have to wait for the “enemy skipped their turn” dialogue to pop up, then click ok, then wait for the animation to disappear before you can continue. The kicker was a level where I had to stall with my king for 5 moves before a trap took out all of the enemies to show me how the trap worked. This game might be great for toddlers, but to me it just feels like they programmed the game to eat as much of your time as possible to juice metrics or payouts.

Difficult Events

The game is fun and simple story has felt like a breeze but these current events some of the missions and criteria to get 3 stars are infuriating, guess I’m not the best shogi player but I literally cannot figure out how to beat some of the missions let alone get 3 stars. I’ll us the info feature which even the AI cannot think of ways to beat the computer in some of these missions it’s fun bus some of these events feel impossible and it makes you just wanna stop playing all together and play regular shogi instead of these weird mini maps where you’re placed in losing situation. Not that I want it easy but feel like the devs make missions but haven’t tried to actually beat them themselves. Idk guess it’s a skill issue but makes me wanna step away from the game.

I feel it’s a nice interesting way to learn the game

It randomly popped up on my phone to download and my Naruto senses tingled, and I was like “you know what why not, I have always been interested” while I can tell that it may get repetitive needing to perfect each level to move forward, I like the concept a lot.

Shogi (Chess)

So far so good, I guess. I’ve been learning to play chess on Duolingo so I thought this would be a fun way to implement what I’ve learned. It’s “funish”, but like others have noted it takes a minute to get through the animations and you have to restart some levels if want to get all three stars. Overall, for a newbie to the Shogi world it’s a decent game play that may make the experienced player a little annoyed.

Terrible, but consistent for AA

I always wanted to get better at Shogi and thought this Apple Arcade title might do the trick. It doesn’t; it’s terrible. The first thing you’ll notice is that there are a lot of long animations for everything. Each piece has to animate and move slowly. Did you capture a piece? That has to slowly slide off the screen. Then the computer has to tell you what it thinks of your move with a flashing banner that stays at the top of the screen for a few seconds. Then the computer’s turn starts and all of these same animations happen again. You cannot do anything during these animations. The banners are very inconsistent. You’ll get “Fantastic!” in the first few maps as you make the very easy moves to get the minimum number of moves objective. But then, all of a sudden, you’ll get a “Good” or “Great”. Was that not the correct move? No, it was, it just seems to say things randomly. Ok, so that’s not great, and you’re waiting around a lot, but is that so bad? Well, when the “campaign” of the game is essentially just chess puzzles, with various missions to complete in each one (and one is always a “complete in the minimum number of moves”), you might have to reset often. The animations really start to wear thin after you’ve restarted a map a few times. Worse than that is the general lack of care given to the instructions and to the game itself. It explains promoting pieces early on, by saying to get the piece to the “enemy’s half of territory”. That makes sense. But then it changes these rules in many of the missions, so that the “enemy territory” is sometimes only 1 or 2 spaces (and not half the board). And this is not explained but there is a small red flag with a chinese character on it actually denotes the territory line. The worst thing is they don’t even use the terminology consistently. The “bishop” (as it is most often referred to) is a great piece, but it’s also referred to as a “witch soldier” as well as a chinese character. This makes it really frustrating for those that are not already well-versed with the game. All of your captured pieces (which can be played again) are similarly ONLY marked with chinese characters, and this is the only time the game forces you to try and learn those characters. In every other instance, English words are used to define these pieces (but, unfortunately, not even consistently). In short, this is a terrible way to learn this game or try to get better at it. Since it is Apple Arcade, the odds of anything changing in this app are very small. I won’t be sticking around to watch.

A little overcooked

It’s beautiful! but simple tons gets in the way. I find it very difficult to *read* the pieces. They need a better silhouette so I know what they are at a glance. The animations received a lot of love (they are impressive), but those precious seconds lost watching them becomes a hindrance. I’d start with removing the “your turn“, “their turn”.

Casual Being Key…

When I saw this pop up on “Coming Soon,” I was curious. I love playing Japanese chess, but never have anyone to play with. This game helps build the strategic thinking to hone your beginner skills. If you always wanted to learn how to play the game, but never have a Sensei nearby to teach you. Consider playing Everybody Shogi. I love the daily challenges and the current event. One piece of advice: in Japanese Chess, you can play the pieces you capture, which is often overlooked by regular chess players.

Can’t even finish the 2nd level of the first event.

You get one bishop on a field with 2 other pieces, you can destroy one of the pieces in 2 moves but after that point the bot will literally run your turns out with no movement mistakes afterwards.

Good, but

Super fun, but we need to be able to review how a captured piece moves without deploying it to the table. For example, when playing against the Fluffy Puppy deck, I have no visual reference when I select the captured piece. One pug looks like the next. Plus, I don’t speak Japanese, so I can’t even tell the name of the piece. Frustrating, but easily fixable.
