Its like if Ace Attorney was actually fun

As if the sheer amount of times the Professor proved how much better he was than Phoenix in “Professor Layton Vs Phoenix Wright” wasn’t enough, here comes his son to star in a game that does everything Ace Attorney ever did a million times better. My only complaint is that Level-5 is no longer publishing games over here. C’mon guys, your sales weren’t THAT bad, were they?

Music/Sound Glitch

I just installed the game when I remembered I bought it years ago. It only remembered I bought one pack and not both which was unfortunate. I ended buying it again to play the game fully but the music and soundtrack is completely gone. It kills the mood that was set for the game. Please fix this so I can play it again

For the fans can you make a new yokai watch game or mobile game? If not then at least can you return wib wob or any other mobile game? If not al least announce the release Sade for Holly horror mansion? And one more request… can you make a new season for the anime? If you did any of these requests then that would be sweet. Don’t bother paying…

…the games, or files or cases etc are repeats of cases you’ve already solved. Who wants to slog through all that dialog, with no chance to interrupt and say IT WAS SUICIDE! and go through all of those steps TWICE?

★★★☆☆ United States · v1.0.2 · 29 Apr 2022

Cute, but way too easy/linear

Wouldn’t particularly recommend for experienced or hardcore mystery genre enthusiasts. Holds your hand through all of the cases, and none of them are that tricky to begin with outside of the game simply withholding information. In all of the cases except for the very end of the last one, they circle all of the clues for you to find, you don’t have to work at all. No consequences for being wrong at any point. Alfendi usually hands you the answer a couple of minutes in, regardless of the choices you make. But, super cute artwork and character design in the typical Layton series fashion. Characters are a bit one-dimensional. And a sweet concluding scene.

Made me feel smart

A lot of times when I play mystery room games, things are just convoluted for its own sake. But with this game I actually felt like everything made sense to the story and when I finally solved them, it felt so good. I loved every character, and the way you investigate things was so well put together that I honestly don’t think I could play another mystery room game without Comparing it to this gem. Not for me

Nonstop pointless dialogue that isn’t interesting. I thought I would enjoy solving crimes if I could just get through the dialogue, but the crime solving is bad and makes no sense. It’s not clever and there are no tricks or twists, it just doesn’t make any sense. Instead of going ‘ahhh!’ when you find out the solution to a crime, it’s just ‘um what?’ Pass on this unless you’re a hardcore Layton fan.

Good game, horrible dialogue

As much as the mysteries are good, the cringeworthy dialogue is just too much. Why does Lucy have to speak like such an idiot? ‘It were nowt’, ‘he were’, ‘prof’ ‘by eck’, ‘int’ ‘that sounds dead good that does’. I can’t take any more, it makes me gag. The fact that I have to play as her and be the one talk like that is really annoying to a student of TESOL, English and linguistics. She’s working for an inspector and can’t even speak proper English? Who would hire someone like that? Just have her talk like a normal human being and not the English version of a hillbilly who grew up on a farm & married her brother.

Nothing like Professor Layton

I love the Professor Layton series but this is nothing like it. I only did the free levels and would not pay to do any more if they are like this. I could figure out who the culprit was in the first few minutes but then had to spend ages clicking through screens of dialogue to get to the conclusion. There aren’t any puzzles like in the Professor Layton games. Maybe ok for other people but definitely not something I enjoyed unfortunately.

— Snow*white

★★★★☆ United Kingdom · v1.0.2 · 4 Jan 2018

Very short, especially when you figure out the culprit early (which is easy)

In a lot of the cases, it’s easy to figure out who the killer is, which makes the whole case easy to figure out. Because of this, the cases are very short, only took about 5 minutes each when paying full attention. Also, I was confused by a cutscene at the beginning of the prologue, which says something like “that night he killed me”, and it appears as though Lucy is the speaker, because of what is said after - “detective Constable baker! Are you paying attention?”. Despite this, she never dies? So why does she say that Layton murdered her if she doesn’t die?

Good game but no music

I want to like this game (I'm a massive fan of the Ace Attorney series, which this game is similar to) but I've experienced a bug with both the version on my iPhone 6s and my iPad 5 in that there's just no soundtrack, no matter what I do to the settings menu, even when I delete and reinstall the app. And even though the gameplay is fun, without any music the game feels weirdly barren. Get the free version first to see if this happens to you.

Professor Layton's Awkward Spin-off

Poor attempt at bringing the brilliant Professor Layton experience to the app store. The artwork throughout the game is good with the exception of the protagonist. The defining flaw of the game is the annoying dialogue, written in a british-style that doesn't have the refinement Professor Layton had. The gameplay is more murder focused than the puzzle focus the series normally contained. I suggest playing the more polished games on Nintendo DS and 3DS rather than this limited experience.

★★★☆☆ United Kingdom · v1.0.0 · 27 Jun 2016

More Mystery, Less Babying!

I really liked this game, the case were well written and planned out and solving them was a lot of fun. One of the factors in which I consider this game to be better than others in the same genre is the amount of freedom you have when investigating a crime scene, key points may be highlighted for you but the points that are are mostly things you would end up noticing any way and the highlighting of objects actually produced quite a challenge towards the end, however with the freedom you are given you should also be given a certain amount of risk. Big decisions should have large consequences but this game refuses to let me lose, no mistake you make ever matters, you always get as many tries as you need. Other games have this safety net as well but not quite to this extent, the non spinoff Layton games let you try puzzles as many times as you want but you still get a penalty for losing and in Ace Attorney you can only be penalise so much before you lose the case entirely and have to start again, this game however never lets you experience failure, as long as your answers are correct stuff happens, if you're wrong you're stuck until you're correct. This defeats the whole purpose of puzzles, puzzles aren't made to be solved, they're made to mess with people, they're made to make people pull their hair out until they start begging you for the answer that you will never give them, the stronger the feelings of despair induced by the undertaking of a puzzle the stronger the sense of victory and accomplishment feel when you finally unravel the answer, you feel omniscient for a few seconds and it's awesome, that's why people play puzzle games or mystery games, nothing is more annoying than that one friend who gives you a puzzle to solve and then pre-emptively stops you every time it looks like your going to make a mistake. Sorry for the long review.

The only game I've ever spent money on

Suspenseful, intriguing, and beautiful. Each character is beautifully written and created with their own flaws. There isnt a single badly written character, case, or storyline in the game. And it's not just about the cases. There's an ongoing mystery within the Mystery Room itself, along with the rest of the Yard. It is more than worth it to spend the $5 on the two case packs, as the cases get more difficult, more intriguing, and more shocking as you progress. Definitely give the Mystery Room a try, because even though it's not your typical Layton-and-Luke puzzle solving adventure, it's still so much fun.

good! Marginally above average with very noticeable design issues and format problems.

My score 7.0/10 I was pondering between 6, 6.5 but at the end decided to be generous (really) by daringly opting for a 7. Pros: 1. Excellent fitting soundtrack beautifully composed and arranged. 2. Lovely 2D graphics and art style. 3. Interesting cases with some fascinating twists 4. Set in England! Duh 5. Nice subtle Ace Attorney references 6. The game is well developed technically, no ads! and plays smoothly with no lag, bugs, glitches or crashes. 7. A great variety of murders, not just stabbings or shootings but actually some creative methods included. 8. The "Mystery Rooms" case which was entirely a puzzle section. I enjoyed this as it is different from everything else you do. Too bad its only featured once in the game. 9. Eccentric cast of characters reminiscent of Ace Attorney. Ms Potsby Mahn is directly inspired by Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmatians. Cons: 1. Suffers from budget restraints - the game very noticeably was made on a paper thin budget. 2. No voice acting. 3. No option to re-read previously spoken text. 4. The lip syncing is awful or should I say non existent the characters just move their mouths for a second in one specific pattern to indicate them talking. 5. The 3D graphics are naff and are literally "bare minimum" looking with little to no detail. The characters have no faces or facial features. But just enough for you to recognise who the person is. Conversely as a binary opposite the 2D anime like graphics are gorgeous. 6. A very limited sprite range for each character, same as above just the bare minimum amount to do the job. More variety would provide more personality, emotion and fun factor. Also there is no proper "breakdown" as such. 7. No video cutscenes, which for a game like this would be beneficial 8. You only speak to one or two characters during each case, which for me is not enough. So there are around 3-4 characters per case who you never talk to. 9. Overall the game feels simple and very limited, The game technically is made up of 3 stages: 1. Examine the 3D crime scene, 2. Answer questions during discussions and 3. Present evidence in the Conclusion part. It feels like an extremely watered down Ace Attorney just with even less gamer interaction. Theres no "cross examination" per-se or should I say its pre-automated simply done in cutscenes. 10. This is a weird thing I noticed which to me makes no sense at all. You can examine and collect items that have no relevance to the case at all. For instance you can store a bed in the evidence but it doesn't do anything at all. Why is it there? It feels like a grasping attempt to make the game harder as you need to organise more things. But fails miserably though, it becomes terrible by the last case since there are tons of things you can store like passageways and stairs but 95% of it isn't required. 11. No exploration or freedom as the game is very linear, you have no control over the events that take place. 12. No penalty system, meaning theres nothing stopping you from trying over and over again until you reach the correct answer. 13. Mobile only... Why no 3DS port? The platform which hosts the main series Prof Layton games.. Seems like a no brainer to me but for whatever the reason Level 5 wanted this to be mobile exclusive. 14. The last case is pretty screwy through plenty design errors. Level 5's idea of 5 star difficulty is deliberately making you guess with no leads towards the right path. For instance at one point during the case you are suppose to find the "secret entrance" which does not exist, instead you have to click on the unlocked but closed door somewhere in the tower to continue the story. Unless you know this you'll be stuck there forever. In this games defence which I'm being quite lenient about, it was a mobile exclusive only in 2013. Devices back then were not as powerful as devices today in 2015 so perhaps Level 5 could not do much better despite the circumstances. In further defence development could have started 2 years earlier in 2011 when mobile tech was in infancy. Still this is the weakest out of the Crime Fiction Visual Novel genre. Compared to games such as Ace Attorney and Dangan Ronpa it feels lacking in many areas which makes me too hesitant to award it anymore than a 7 which personally is a very generous score to give. Many would not think twice about giving it a 5 but for me since I'm a fan of this genre and I enjoy playing them my personal opinion is a 7.
