What people like
- Great for planning journeys and checking times
- Useful alerts tell you about delays quickly
- Clean design that looks modern and slick
- Helps you find cheaper train fares easily
What they complain about
- You can't buy tickets inside the app
- App crashes and has connection issues often
- New version is slower and clunkier to use
- Ticket booking process redirects you to random sites
Good
Very good app
Broken Redirects
A recent update broke the redirect functionality when purchasing tickets. It used to redirect reliably to the website of whichever company operates the train you’ll be boarding e.g. Northern Rail, but now it’s seemingly random as to which ticket reseller’s site it directs to which makes buying tickets slower and less convenient as every site has its own registration requirement. Sometimes the redirect fails entirely and the app needs restarting.
Good improvements
Following a difficult start this app has been developed and has improved as a result. It’s now my to go for rail information as it is the source for all the other apps.
Downgraded from a dedicated app to a website
Very disappointing - I understand from a development perspective why this was done, but the app used to be an app. Now it’s just the website being loaded which is clunkier to use.
Good but fails with some station closures
For the majority of the time you get good information on the train services and you plan your journey easily. Occasionally it doesn’t tell you about some station closures and so your journey is completely messed up. For example Fenchurch street in London is sometimes closed after certain hours in the evening and last night it was after 830pm. The app doesn’t tell you this so you travel there only to find it’s closed and train it tell you is running from does not. Very frustrating
Fantastic App
I live in Australia but holiday extensively in the UK, and this app has been invaluable. Once you understand the UK ticketing and pricing system (anytime/off-peak/advanced) train travel in the UK can be quite cheap. On my last trip I was going to purchase a 30 day BritRail Pass but instead used this app to purchase cheap advanced fares (where available) and saved heaps compared to buying a 30 day rail pass (£563) and tickets purchased through the app (£269), plus it was over a 39 day period (London/York/Middlesbrough/Newcastle/Edinburgh/Stirling/Glasgow/Carlisle/Skipton via Settle/Manchester/Liverpool/Shrewsbury/Swansea via Builth Rd/Cardiff/Bristol/Oxford/London, with a few side day trips as well, not bad for £269 - happy days 😁
Mr ionut
Lately is going very slowly and poorly 🤷♂️please check
Too much info
Downloaded app. Enter card number and get asked to pay £1 to an unknown company. Scam?
Terrible connection with SWR
After planning on the National Rail app, I was taken to the SWR site to do the booking. These processes are repetitive and require separate login. What's the point of planning a journey and having to repeat the steps on the SWR page. Why is login in SWR required. Took me two hours still haven't booked tics. Unimpressed and inefficient apps.
Stop asking for the same feedback for “before you go” several times a day!!!!!!!!!!
New app is quicker and looks cleaner, but for goodness sake - stop asking for the feedback!
Outstanding app
Found this app super useful during a train adventure around the UK, it had the most detail on current train status, expected arrival time & platform, push alerts for delays, etc. Highly recommended. I also recommend you get the Great Britain Rail Free app which has some complementary features.
Awful update
I kept getting an error 404 message when I opened the National Rail app so deleted it as thought that would clear it. Unfortunately the previous app has gone and been replaced with this awful update. It’s just messy but the other one worked fine. Please restore it to how it was before. I really wish I hadn’t deleted the app now. I could live with the error message popping up.
Issue with text colour with iPhone in dark mode
My iPhone 8 has dark mode display turned on. When I search for stations in Planner the list of possible stations is almost unreadable. Very light colour on white background. It’s fine once I select a station but hard to get there. Frustrating that you can’t buy the tickets directly from the app but that’s not the developer’s fault. Bipartisan stupidity from #10 for 30+ years to blame for that.
Recent update ruined it!
This app used to be decent. Easy to use. Would store frequently checked stations so you could see live trains at the touch of a button. Now it’s more fiddly: have to choose stations from a drop down menu & there’s no longer an ‘earlier trains’ button which is key if you use it as I do to track when a train left the station… Very disappointing!
Too fiddly!
The previous version of the app was much easier to use
Great app
Works well and watch app is good
Complicated
What did you need to improve
Very helpfu
Pretty easy to use after a bit of exploring. Very helpful for planning a journey. I like how it remembers my inquiries and how you can easily see lower rates and shorter journeys on the same route.
Outdated
Compared to rail apps of other countries (DB, SBB, etc) this app is old, slow and outdated. It is not optimized for newer phones and/or bigger screens and has frequent connection issues. A refresh is urgently needed.
Downgrade, poor performance of app
Since the last update, there are connection errors all the time, despite being in good Wi-Fi or mobile network reception. This stops you finding out about travel updates quickly when on the move. You can no longer look quickly at Live departures from a station without entering a destination, so you can not assess the best train to catch. If you set favourite journeys, the app gets stuck on that page and won’t give you the option to plan a journey or start a new live departures update search. Basic functionality is appalling.
This app is great!
I don't live in the uk, but I had to travel to a friends house by train. This app was very easy and simple to use and I made it there no problem. However, when selecting the time for journeys, it gets confused between 24 hr time and 12 hr time.
No longer useable
This went from an excellent app to one that takes so long to open that the trains have already departed before you get a response. I used to love it, not any more.
Pleased update
Update for iPhone X asap
Ticketing doesn’t work
The app is clumsily designed but serviceable for schedule lookup. But forget about buying tickets; that feature doesn’t work once you try to get to the payments screen.
Ads?!
The app itself is fine but having to pay to have an ad free transit app is outright robbery. No other decent transit app has ads. I'm using the app to find train tickets which I'm going to pay for. Make it free and I'll give it 5 stars.
Super
war tolle Hilfe, am iPad zur Planung zu Hause und dann am iPhone während der Reise 😜
EC
Messy, cluttered and not as user friendly
we need iphone5 version
we need iphone5 version
可以查火车,但不能购买
如果这个APP可以查询后直接购买会更好,只能查询不能购买就显得鸡肋了
Can't purchase tickets ??
If anyone could tell me why I can't go on the next stage of purchasing tickets would be amazing! I have made an account put in my visa details but won't let me get to the next stage ?? Thanks Sam
Super Hilfe
Im Urlaub zu den olympischen spielen war der App eine Super Hilfe. Zeiten waren zwar nicht immer 100% aber man hat ja zeit im Urlaub.
What have they done
A once useful app destroyed by a terrible update
Good timetable app
This is a good app for finding the connections and timetable. However, used to the app of SBB, I was expecting to be able to buy tickets, which you can't, export into calendar, which you can't, and also the seat load of the different trains would be something very useful.
App stuck and can't purchase tickets
I was able to make a purchase of one ticket which several times to do before it finally submitted. When I tried to do another purchase, I clicked tickets, picked my time and then hit buy now and kept being taken back to the results from my previous purchase. Tried refreshing, reload downloading the app and neither of that worked. Giving up on the app
great improvement on last versions but...
Great improvement on last version -we're able to see ticket prices BUT the app takes you too train companies websites (within the app) where there's no iPhone formatting. also needs a iOS 7 inspired coat of paint over UI
Fooding day
Buenisima nos salvo el dia de las inundaciones en Escocia ! Graciassss
Terrible and inaccessible
Terrible app, it takes ages to find anywhere, especially as I use VoiceOver. I’ve switched to Railboard, it’s the perfect app for train times.
Simple, easy to use
This is a great app, simple and easy for everyday journeys. I like that you can see a list of stops on your route and the platforms where you board and disembark. It's easy to find the last train too.
Unreliable
Used this app to buy a ticket. When it asked me for payment info and then buy ticket, it had totally changed the times and date I had put in. I had to call and buy another ticket and then wait for a refund. Why?
Good but not great
Finding info is easy and journey planning works well. Does not store bookings in app, you must have tickets posted to you, so you can't book tickets on day of travel. It's the C21st guys, you need to fix this.
Why duplicate?
This app looks very nice, slick modern interface. But apart from the new wake up feature and moving everything around, how is this different than the existing Train Times app the National Rail already put out? They seem to have the same functionality.
Crashes, freezes, and random zooms?
The app back in 2008 was better. This one freezes every so often, demands to zoom in whenever you want to type something, and makes it very difficult to go back or forward in time to find trains. Please just revert back to how it used to be.
No longer works
The app used to work perfectly. Now it has a connection problem.
Impressed
Slick design, fully featured - esp like the "wake me up"
Total rubbish !!
Clunky downgrade !!!
Trains missing!
I tried planning a few journeys and a bunch of trains don't show up. The work ok at nationalrail.co.uk, so ill use that instead. (Note I have "show direct etc" off). If you want reliable info, be wary of this!
