What people like
- Great for reading manga and comics
- Totally free to use
- Supports many different file formats
- Works perfectly offline without internet
What they complain about
- Crashes frequently with large files
- CBR and CBZ files often fail
- Hard to move or manage files
- Only works well with Dropbox
Works Amazing
The app works great for me. i just add my mangas/comics and it shows up. Relatively easy to add them. Also works offline and in airplane mode.
No luck with iOS 14
Not working with iOS 14. The app was great previously.
Own files
Yes, it can save my file to it but, one by one. There is no copy and paste to since its local library cannot be read. When I used open in. It just put one file in it when I selected more than 2 books. Hoping getting easy to get around my own files. Everything is great. Shelfs and reading. Thank you.

Fail
Despite claims, does not read zip or cbr
Two page
Please add "two page view" in portrait mode too.
Broken updates
The app changed some setting I assume for iOS 26 compatibility but now the text for the titles of the books is huge. Not sure what they did but the app is broke. Test your updates!
fix and repair
I love this app so much! But what is needed is a way to fix broken files and change the extensions to repair them.
Not OS7 compatible
accidentally upgraded Ipad to OS7 ... App now crashes on opening. Pity, was good up until then. now looking for alternative
Cool but can you add offline file manager on iphone?
I like this app, but you can add the iphone file browser? Just like that View—>iphone—>crhome(or any files page). You can add this in subscription. If you want this, of course. Because If someone wants to read some manga, then he must install the app, then register in it and also upload a book or manga to the cloud (if there is a slightly slow Internet, then it's generally tin) and only then can you read. And so with the help of a simple indication of the folder with manga, it will reduce the time twice. If you want to launch your app for everyone. Thanks if you read this, dear Developer With love your user
Looks great, but…
App looks great, but lacks the ability to view and read externally stored files. I need an an inexpensive app that simply lets me access my externally stored files without copying them to my internal storage.

Amazing app
Hands down amazing app that I’ve been using for 10 years on multiple devices. And the thing you won’t believe it’s still being worked on and updated. Comparing to many dead apps on the AppStore. This is my essential on a new iOS device every time.
Good while it lasted
Dropbox files no longer work and it always crashes
No dark mode?
Doesn’t seem to support PDF reading of light text on black background.
Need Help
I have loved using SideBooks for reading scoresheets. With the new update the triangles in the bookmarks no longer rotate to show sub-headings. I can’t find a way to contact the developer to get the problem fixed.
移動できないファイルがある
フォルダに移動できないファイルがあります。移動できるファイルもあります。できないのは何回トライしてもダメ。
Perfect!
Free. Works well with a variety of formats. My goto reader for sure! Dropbox is a great bonus 💪
Closes when opening CBR files
Won't open any of my comic book reader files.
Important features missing
Solid PDF viewer which performs as advertised, but misses some useful features… PLEASE implement WiFi Transfer functionality between iOS device and computer. Also, it would be nice to be able to toggle Dark Mode on/off from within the app settings. Thanks!!
Need improvement
Some cbz and cbr files corrupt only in this app(most common cbr) and the interface is too chunky and confusing
不具合
最新にアップデートしましたが次の巻に遷移するタイミングで落ちるようになってしまいました。
感恩
从右向左翻页的功能非常实用，尤其是对于阅读日语书籍、漫画。
Polished, well-featured but unreliable.
SideBooks is great at some things. It supports CBR, CBZ and PDF files, which is all I needed it to do. The Dropbox integration is fantastic too. The interface for reading is pretty slick, although it can take a second or two to sharpen up. The big problem though is that it crashes all too often. Especially on big files. And when that happens I couldn't find a way to restore the app. It got into a cycle of crashing out on a file every single time I opened it and restarting the app, and then restarting the iPad, didn't work. That made my entire library unaccessible which isn't great if you're going away. Tried the same file in Comic Book Lover and Comic Zeal and it worked fine.
Better before iOS 15 update
I love this app so much. I use it to store my crochet patterns. It ran perfectly until the newest iOS 15 update of the app. Now it crashes when I add books/files to it. It didn’t do that before you updated SideBooks 6 days ago. Please fix this so it’s back to being amazing. Thanks!!
Perfect, except that often next page has not yet rendered
Developer claims to do preloading, but simple JPGs are often pixelated when they first appear (depends on the speed of flipping). I present my home made PDF photo books and it's annoying. It feels like I'm not local but online. PLEASE cache more pages in advance and increase the cache! When quickly flipping back to some pages before, it does not look smooth. The loaded pages should remain in memory more generously.
Wish there was more
I love this app. There is nothing else that does what it does so well. But there are a few things I would wish for. One is better app support and FAQs in English. And I’m not sure what happened but the app updated or something and I lost the entire bookshelf and had to reload it book by book. There is no option to load an entire folder from Dropbox. And I hate that is the only way to get books to the app. Doesn’t work with any other cloud services. And I suppose with no competition they don’t have a reason to do more. It’s fine. I will continue to use it. Like I say. I love it. But I am still praying for my wish list.
One of the best apps for reading sheet music
This is definitely one of the best apps and a personal favorite for reading sheet music on my iPad Pro using a Bluetooth page turner. Please keep improving and adding features. Thank you so much for this great app !
Rubbish
You have to have Dropbox to be able to have any books, so like me if u haven't got Dropbox its the WORST APP EVR
Excellent app but
Please add support for onedrive, will pay for that upgrade
Slow rendering
Lots of potential but slow rendering of a page on iPhone 4 makes the whole reading experience below average.
Slow, buggy, missing essential features
This version takes lot of time to load page. Last version had no such bugs but this version has annoying bugs. Please fix it asap Please add export feature. I want to see edited pdf on another device but cant because there is no options to export pdf or any file of any format
Best Reader I Found
I love this app, however I would love if there was a dark option on the books themselves.
Such a shame
As the other review meantions, you cannot have more than 5 cbr's/cbz's etc the app simply closes. It's a shame because it's nicely presented and feels good to use and navigate, you can see the developer put in the effort to polish it, it's just a frustrating that they seemed to skip on the testing of the app. Will remove until fixed. Back to Bookman for me.
Great app
How about adding an eraser in the pen toolbox? I can select pens and colors but can’t erase when I make a mistake on the writings. I also like to be able to open files stored on my iCloud Drive directly without having to import to the app. Thanks.
Crashes
Can't have more than 5 (.cbr) files on it or else it will crash. A real let down.
Rename file
In this version, It doesn't rename a file, only rename the viewing name
Love this PDF reader….except
I’m using this review to hopefully put in a feature request sine the support site is in Japanese. I love this reader….it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for except…PLEASE give us multiple sizes of thumbnails to choose from. They are so small it’s sometimes hard to read what on the cover.
Doesn't work
Does ,not work and instructions in Japanese, so how do others get it to work?
Clean interface and easy to navigate.
I would give it 5 stars if the Dropbox feature allowed bulk downloads instead of 1 at a time. An additional feature I would like is multiple bookshelves to categorize the books/docs more efficiently. Or in my case, have a shelf that is for my kids and one that is for me 😁
Crashes on ipad 3
This is a pretty good app, but its constantly crashing
Great but...
This is a great little app, but constant crashes when trying to use the trimming option make it frustrating. There have been a few updates, but still no fix for this annoying problem.

Didn't work
Couldn't read any cbr files. Crashed when I added my cbr's through iTunes! Useless!
Excellent free app that can still improve
I’ve been using this app for a while but recently started to use it a lot more now that I have a tablet and can really appreciate comics viewed using it. It’s amazing at what it does for the price—free! It’s an app I’d happily pay for, especially if we could get a bit more out of it, like a more customizable bookshelf look (it also gets a bit crowded, and the labels can be difficult to make out), and perhaps the ability to mass edit books (e.g. bulk change the cover to “the second page of the file”). Definitely recommend this to anyone with lots of comics in ZIP/RAR or even PDF format.
Can't open all CBRs
Can't open all CBRs and crashes app...
So close.....
From the picture presented before installing it implies many books/comics can be stored on a shelf, ideal perfect just what I wanted. I could not put 12 comics on the shelf without the app crashing - so much potential. Please fix this as I would pay for an app like this!
