What people like
- Great for tracking investment performance and risk
- Useful for quick quote checks on the go
- Morningstar research quality remains high and trusted
What they complain about
- App crashes or fails to load data often
- Login issues and frequent forced sign-outs
- Missing key features found on the desktop version
- Portfolio view is buggy and unreliable
Logging on is terrible
Not sure why this problem has persisted for so long but logging into this app requires manual entry or going through many steps with the iPhone password manager. There doesn’t even seem to be a way to enable Face ID. Really amateurish.
Great app with missing one important feature
This is a great app for tracking investments and reviewing risk and performance of each holding. I rated 4 star because I use the desktop version all the times. But really, the mobile app is useless for me because one important feature is missing. In the portfolio, there is no customization to reorder the rows of holdings other than sorting. It can only sort by alphabetical order of the symbols. If I want to look at two stocks or ETFs next to each other for comparison, I am out of luck. In the desktop version, I can use the “my notes” column to enter numbers and letters to sort the rows to my desired order. But the mobile app doesn’t have “my notes” column. I wish the rows in portfolio can be reordered manually like what yahoo’s mobile app does. A “notes” column will be a plus feature. Thanks.
Behind the times.
Poor functionality. No face recognition for sign on , or iPhone memory of sign on data like most all apps these days. I can for example access the WSJ without signing in every use. This app seems years behind others.
Podcast
Where are the links to Morningstar podcasts on the mobile app?
Continues to go downhill
Morningstar’s desktop access has been rebuilt with less functionality YOY since 2019; it’s no surprise MStar is apparently not smart enough to write a separate responsive application for their mobile app. Clumsy, clunky, offering little to the retail investor, it’s apparently designed for MStar employees or something… there are better apps elsewhere!
Just use the website
An ok app 5+ years ago, but M* has put little investment or new features into the app since. The website offers more functionality, though M* has been slow to add meaningful features for DIY retail investors there either
Not good
Very basic. Some of the functionality is not even working like I could not add stocks to watchlist. For a paid subscription you expect better.
Behind the times
This app has not been updated in years in terms of its functionality. None of the search engine capabilities that exist with the web-based interface are on the app. It is very frustrating.
App sucks
Good info but the app is terrible.. Might as well just use google because it's not a good app at all. It's very janky and terrible to use on a phone... Not worth the money..
Bugs
Can’t rely on it anymore. Good luck getting help from them. Stock/fund daily price will be different in two separate places. Data will be missing on portfolio view. Think they test in production instead of before.
Can’t even login.
Couldn’t say if the app experience is good or not. All I seem to get is an error message when I try to login. This has been for at least 6 months. Kinda sad. Well, now I can login, but 2/3 of the time nothing will load or it says I don’t have a portfolio. Then logout, close the app, open the app, login, and maybe it’ll work. Time to look for something better.
Unreliable
The app continuely fails to display my portfolio.
Love Morningstar, Web Functionality Is Better
Overall, I love Morningstar it’s a great site and company. This app needs a little bit of love, doesn’t have much of the features I like including portfolio X-ray. It also gets buggy frequently displaying an error occurred. I like it for simple stuff like quote checks but beyond that it’s a little limited. Recommend the website instead much much better.
Not worth it
Price is absurd for a subscription considering the app is as horrible as it is.
Manage input
It is difficult to add and subtract into one account or another. It was easier sometime ago.
Could be brttyer
I can’t seem to control the page when I open the app. I don’t want to have portfolio come up. Further, every time they update the app, I must sign in again
Whats ure credentials.
Asks u to log in every other day pretty much. So if u dont have that memorized then good luck. Whoever created the app is a weeee bit paranoid about security….
No auto fill for password managers
Not good
The app is Morningstar’s Achilles heel
Besides the flaws mentioned by others, something concrete I’d love to have in the app is the Screener, native apps will always be a superior experience compared to websites.
Surprisingly poor usability for the price. Disappointing
1. The portfolio view is often unavailable and not user friendly. 2. Slow data 3. frequently got logged out
Buttons not working, confusing
When an app’s buttons don’t work, it’s immediately not useful to me. Plus the fact that when you just want a price chart and basic info and there’s not logically sound reason to get to the data is just a no.
Failing to open
I love this app, I use it daily. However recently it’s suddenly failing to open my portfolio.
Please don’t ignore your app, M*
All of the negatives about this app are true. You can’t really pull up a watchlist without the app freezing. Displaying incorrectly, or the app closing. And you cannot add to a watchlist, unless it happens to he the first watchlist on your list. It just keeps reverting back to the first list. It’s so annoying. It’s like they gave up caring about their app.
Lost potential
The app needs to feel more seamless than the web browser. This app is missing so many features it’s like an app stuck in the early 2000s while customers pay a considerable subscription.
Not so Great
Website is great, app not so much. Very glitchy and cumbersome to use. The good news is I don’t really feel the need for it - I do most of my work on a laptop. Perhaps if worked better I would use it more.
Buggier than ever
Failures to load data, inability to make in-app modifications, and usability issues make this app nearly useless.
poor navigation capabilities.
poor navigation, no forward/back capabilities, very limited. website much better, but also quite limited capabilities.
Slow to Update
The app is slow to update information. It sometimes shows prices from the prior day or much earlier in the same day.
Broken
Login screen encounters error and will not remember your password or use Face ID on IPhone 10X. I have to enter user name and password every time. This error has been present for several months now.
Dysfunctional
This app is worse than the website in terms of functionality and ease of use. Not sure why Morningstar cannot apply their research standards to customer-facing needs. I’ve already provided feedback directly; no avail.
Portfolio update
Slow to update my portfolio on a daily basis. Unable to make changes to my portfolio on my iPhone, they have to be updated on my IMac.
