What people like
- Great for keeping you accountable to train
- Easy to use on Apple Watch
- Helps beginners structure their running goals
- Includes useful strength training workouts too
What they complain about
- Most plans are locked behind a paywall now
- Syncing with watches and Strava is unreliable
- App crashes or freezes during your runs
- Customer support is slow and unhelpful
- AI pacing predictions are often unrealistic
Love this app
I’ve followed strength training to supplement my runs (get stronger/faster/recover from weakness related injuries) but love the workouts suggested on the app. Great animations and descriptions to make sure you perform the movements correctly too. Haven’t managed to make my hr data link with the workout yet (I’ve tried!( but works perfectly with the scheduled runs. Plenty of variation keeps things interesting and dynamic without having to over think (or think at all). I’ve been much more disciplined with this app and its programmes.
Paywall 😔
There are now no running plans that can be used for free. I have been using Runna on and off for about a year. I am have just started a new plan to get back into running and have completed two runs with my plan. I was really looking forward to continuing my plan so I am so disappointed that the further runs in my plan are now behind a paywall. I cannot afford £16 a month; I am a student. It is so disappointing as it didn’t used to be this way and I used to be able to work through my plans without paying. But everything is such a greedy money grab these days, I’m so disappointed in this company
Solid app that could use some minor tweaks
Mostly can’t fault the app as a whole - it’s full of incredibly useful tools, reminders and tips to help advance your running and keep you accountable, especially if you’re training for a race. I really enjoy the pace cues, but feel it could be better with some adjustment. It becomes a little jarring if you drift out of pace due to inclines/declines and there isn’t much to help guide you back aside from “speed up” and “slow down”, but someone with the right mind could adapt this to make it perfect. Highly recommend the app regardless - worth the subscription without doubt.
Good for beginners
It’s a decent app for people who want to start running, but its AI features are horrible (summaries, feedback and suggestion) and very inaccurate. Also it doesn’t use heart rate (the most important physiological factor) but only pacing, not even the information of cadence
Good but pricy
I enjoyed it for the year but not sure I’ll renew at £99 a year
Getting there
Slowly but surely
Useless app without premium
Who is paying 30 bucks a month or 180 bucks a year. Absolutely useless without premium
Structure for my week
Have been using for around a month. The app ‘holds me to account’ to complete the scheduled sessions. I can move the scheduled activity days to fit in with my life and the twice a week strength option means that I don’t skip this important part.
Paying to be a beta tester?
I like the concept but the app has some shortcomings I find frustrating. It stands out as being the most frustrating running app I've used if I am honest. That includes both my free and paid experiences. I'll be seeing it through to the end of the training plan at least but I do feel like I am paying to be a beta tester with some of it. I've had to raise many requests to support and they don't always have an answer. Some things that spring to mind - Pacing on Apple Watch (Ultra 3) is terrible and close to unusable on shorter intervals for me. Apple Watch activities seem fine themselves - AI can sometimes re generate things differently if it needs to re run something when you would assume you were always getting an optimised training plan and it shouldn't vary much. A more old school approach could improve this unless it is using an old school approach and it just has bugs - I have longer run than I should the the day before a race which would typically be less activity - There is no warm up and cool down built around a race day
What’s app with all the new bugs???
App hangs too often. Interface becomes unusable in the app. Was good - not so much right now
Life changing
One of the most amazing apps of all time for runners
Workout timer not working
Overall I'm enjoying Runna but I'm leaving a 1* review because the timer on the strength workouts does not work. There is no audible beep at the end of the timer, so you have no idea when to stop. Please fix this, I have seen others on Reddit with the same problem.
Very good, some tweaks could make it epic
I really enjoy this app. It gives a good clear training plan but some of the exercises can be tough and the app doesn’t recognise when your particularly poor at something (core planking for me) a really good addition would be to be able to view the workout and pick a couple to go up or down a legal Another super helpful thing would be a cook down targeted to the area you have just trained
Not that great
It’s fine as a general guide. Also customer service doesn’t exist if you need any help. The AI bot is useless and real humans don’t get back to you. Trying Garmin Coach instead.
It’s ok
Not the smoothest way of syncing with Apple Watch, not particularly motivational, the pace is often a bit erratic, could easily plan similar work outs. Kind of expected more for my money.
No nonsense training plan
I’m currently on a 10k training plan with a race in 2 weeks time. Did a Park Run this weekend for the first time since starting this 8 week plan and shaved over 3 mins off my 5k.
Poor attention to details
Signed up for a two-week trial as a Strava subscriber, my plan starts on a Sunday and on Monday Runna says I am on week 2. If this is a display of the thoroughness of your plans and attention to details, I can’t say I will be subscribing.
Great app
I’m really enjoying the programming and love that I don’t need to think about what weights program to follow that’s supports my current running goal. The only thing I’m disappointed with is the stickers don’t work for me when sharing my runs on social platforms.
Was good until they added the paywall
I’ve been using Runna on and off for a year-ish. I’m accident prone but genuinely found the return to running plan to be the best plan for me. I’m finally injury free so decided to try again only to find anything after week 1 for ANY run now hidden behind a paywall?? I already pay for Strava, I’m not paying £100 for a year when there are free alternatives. Absolute joke.
Has it started ?!
General use is good and user friendly. Yet some issues that worsen the experience: the data collection, I used another app at the same time and the results were different. Close, yet for those who is taking the numbers as achievement it could make the difference. Other the most anoing thing is, there is been so many times I started the run, yet the data collection didn't, feel like you have to press start more times than you expect. But the product has a lot of work put into, and that is noticed, thank you for this work.
Dan B
Very good for setting pace and giving your workouts
Not free for beginners
Had read online the beginner plan was free, got a week in and now the rest of my plan is locked behind a paywall. Won’t be forced into paying so I’ll be looking for an alternative instead. Feels dishonest to claim free when it’s not.
Good but could be great :)
I really like this app to provide a plan for me to get to my targeted distance. It was great. What I don’t like is that now I’m on my second plan it thinks I haven’t done any training. I don’t class myself as an accomplished runner but there doesn’t seem to be any way to have that progress acknowledged. It’s also frustrating that you can’t schedule in parkrun each Saturday. Getting the sorry we see you didn’t do the full distance today on Saturday’s is not an accurate reflection of what my plan should be. I also wondered if there is the possibility of being able to identify your location. Today my plan told me to drink plenty due to the high humidity- it’s 4 degrees in winter. Definitely no humidity here today
Robot coach?
I’m not sure who or what the “coach” is, but on my first run all I heard was a robot voice giving extremely minimal notifications. Other apps are much better in terms of coaching and guidance while running.
Doesn’t display runs correctly on Apple Watch app
I like the app on its own and the running and strength training plans are really good but the link to the Apple Watch doesn’t work very well. If you don’t start a run on your Apple Watch it doesn’t calculate the calories for the run but if you do it treats it as a totally different run so doubles your distance
Super helpful app
Love the support, personalisation and planning this app provides me with, as a fairly new runner. Really helps me to structure my runs and focus on my goals. Keeps me accountable, well priced and syncs well with apple health and Strava etc.
logged me out and i lost all my data
i updated the app and it wouldn’t let me log back into it and i lost all my personal best times and all. Not happy at all.
Apple Watch Ultra 3
Very good, easy to use watch app and leave phone at home. 1 star penalty for the occasional freeze of app, which is highly frustrating - although it has come back to life before end of run, although highly annoying and distracting when in the zone.
Good in theory but poorly functioning
I subscribed for Strava+Runna but then it wouldn’t speak to runna so I clicked onto both so I could link the accounts and then they charged me for both. I submitted a ticket and it took them 21 days of silence before they finally tesoonded with too bad sorry. That is a prelude to continued disappointment in its function. Often I will run and start the run program through the runna app on my Apple watch and it will give me all the lap prompts which means it’s tracking my pace and distance but then the run will not appear on my runna app or Strava app history for tracking. This happens about 25% of the time. The run will show up on my Apple fitness app though, which makes it odd. The inconsistency paired with the poor customer service means I cannot recommend this app. I also don’t think you need the yearly membership which I unfortunately bought and was charged twice for. Get it for a month, get a gist of the program, then cancel it and rinse, repeat and adjust for your own abilities. You can do it on your own, I believe in you!
It’s ok, not great.
The “adaptive AI” isn’t nearly as adaptive and good as I thought this would be. After the initial setup, it mostly just delivered the same runs on the same days each week. Beyond adjusting mileage if I missed sessions, there wasn’t much genuine coaching or adaptation. If you’re an experienced runner, you could build a very similar plan yourself with a bit of research. My biggest issue was that it heavily based my marathon pacing on my 5K speed. It never seemed to recognise that marathon endurance and 5K speed are different, so it continually pushed unrealistic marathon paces despite months of long runs suggesting otherwise. I enjoyed the shorter tempo workouts and seamless Garmin integration, but I expected much more from the “AI” aspect. The coaching is very generic and just a blanket statement set to each run.
Helpful, good watch app
Apple watch interface is helpful and useful. Easy to navigate. Good personalisation and ability to tweak.
Paywall ❌
Locked behind a paywall when it never used to be!
Lisa
It’s motivating me to get out the door. I like the prompts as I run along.
Get ready to pay!
$163/year or $28/month…seems reaaaally steep for a running app. They also will help “build” a plan for you but only let you access the first 2 weeks for free. Use Nike Run Club or something that isn’t going to cost an arm and a leg to exercise.
So expensive and AI
Be wary this app has a TONNE of ai building runs. It’s not quiet the “Trainer” USP they once had. And one thing an AI does not know. Is your body. Be wary.
Useful
Found this so helpful for motivating me on harder days and structuring my training so much better than I was doing before
Buggy and poor support
I found the app buggy, for example it would randomly not allow me to start recording a run even after restarting the app. Synching issues with Strave. Calories burned data was inaccurate, in one case I burned less calories in a 10k run than a 7k run! Message support and you get the scripted answer of check latest version of the app; data signal blah blah with no further help. Gave up and went onto Strava paid version.
Almost perfect
I have been using Runna for three months paid subscription. It’s great if you don’t do other exercise and just need a plan to follow. The strength workouts are a bit basic for me, and the plan could be more fluid, for example maybe you know you can’t run one day you can’t flag that in advance. Also I just started my second plan and it doesn’t really carry anything over from the first so it’s predicting a slower time in 3 months than what I can run now.
Sketchy Onboarding
You start your training on week 1 and then, week 2 is blocked behing a paywall. I dont mind paying but dont make it a surprise, you loose me right away. Just be honest and very clear that week 1 is free so i dont feel I lost my time. Very bad user experience.
Great, but…
This is a really good app in principal; however it’s recently started to drop the connection to my I-watch. I add it back before every run, but it’s usually dropped out again by the end of the run and doesn’t record that I’ve done anything, which is really frustrating. If this was fixed, it would get 5 stars!
Great app
Really enjoying using the app so easy to use
Runbish
I downloaded this to use with Strava which I like. All I really wanted was pace instructions, speed up or slow down. To reach a target time over a set distance. If I wanted a plan,l would have just used ai to write me a plan. I found it clunky, unnecessary gimmicks (points for essentially doing marketing for them). You can get pace apps elsewhere for free (should have checked prior) do research. You absolutely don’t need this.
Good program but unsubscribing is problematic.
I joined to train for a few weeks. It’s a good coaching app but leaving seems impossible as the links provided to unsubscribe lead to nothing.
Committed Runner, Flawed Algorithm. Honest Feedback After Months of Use
I used Runna as my primary training tool for several months leading up to a half marathon race day, completing nearly every session with only a few missed workouts due to illness and Ramadan. I was genuinely committed to the program. Unfortunately, the results, and more importantly, the data, tell a story the app seems unwilling to hear. The pace predictions were significantly overstated. Even after manually dropping my target by 20–25 seconds per km below the app’s recommendation, I couldn’t sustain it past 6 km on race day. Ended up with a race performance worse than my training. More critically: the algorithm ignored clear physiological red flags in the final two weeks. My HRV dropped over 7 points eight days before the race and stayed suppressed until race day. My Garmin flagged my training status as “Strained” during the same period. The taper week did nothing to reverse this. The app had all of this data, and did nothing with it. The issue isn’t a bad race. It’s that a training platform with months of your biometric and performance data should be able to identify when a runner is being worn down, not built up. The volume, effort zones, paces, and taper logic need serious rethinking. For casual runners, the structure and guidance may be helpful. But if you train with data and expect the platform to actually use it, you may find it frustrating.
Not very intuitive
Very frustrating tried to sync with my running buddy but never quite the same and every time it restarted my plan did not acknowledge any of my runs already completed. Plans are okay but doesn’t personalise well enough
Back into running
Hands down one of the best apps I’ve used in a long time
Not Free
The basic back to running or new to running were free. Now they have made everything subscription based. Falsely advertised as a free running app but it is not at all.
Pretty damn great
Training for my first half marathon and this app has literally been the only reason I’m still on track to actually complete this thing. No, not the cheapest plan in the world but I’ve yet to come across anything that would be any cheaper and give you all this to work with. Great when partnered with Strava as well for the community aspect of it all. I’m a gym guy, turned runner and I never thought I’d see the day. 100% all thanks to Runna. One side note, if you don’t have a smartwatch, I’d say not worth it but that’s personal preference I guess.
Lack of thought
Why can’t I mute the sounds in the app so when I run no one yaps in my ear that I’m slow? How could you design the app and not give that option. Just let me run and shut the hell up. Back to strava.
Too much too fast
I really enjoyed using the app and the workouts however the speed at which it increases the distance and speed workouts has left me with my first running injury (stress fracture). It could be made easier to adjust workouts, it’s also super expensive.
