Everything I Ever Wanted
Genuinely this is my favorite tracking app for all of my media. I love being able to track books, movies, shows, albums, etc all in one place, and the stats function is brilliant. The developer is truly so kind and takes all user feedback seriously, which is so rare nowadays. Thank you Sofa for making me enjoy my hobbies even more!!
Hard to use interface, many books can’t be matched from goodreads
Settings is buried under lists, why? And when you first open the app it advertises a bunch of new features then gives no explanation on how to use them. This app is really annoying to use. Once I finally figured out how to import goodreads, hundreds of my books did not have matches despite them being popular bestsellers from the last few years. And with these items without a match, there is no option to search for the item to match or create a custom item. It just suggests a couple items to match which are never correct.
Solid, some bugs
App meets my needs for the most part but something like manual sorting items might need to be looked at. It doesn’t work me.
Sub prices keeps going up!
Beware: Developer keeps raising monthly/annual price. No issues with the app. It’s great.
Incomplete
I think the unfortunate part of apps like this is if the database of items you can add is incomplete, then it defeats the entire point of having a “collection” list for example. I’ve found items in Music and Books so far that I haven’t been able to add. Given this immediate and upfront gap I’m not sure if it makes sense to invest further time using.
Love it
This is the perfect tool to keep track of the never ending content on my watch/read lists. One thing I’m hoping is in the roadmap: enhanced search/search results. Right now you can search word-for-word titles-I’d be excited to see if sofa can search wider genres like anime or indie films. And if discovery could include recommended/related content-so like, if you search Clueless, you could see Mean Girls, Heathers, and Bring it On in a recommended section.
A once-great, simple app ruined by update.
The simplicity and ease of use that made me recommend this app to EVERYONE is gone. It’s a bloated mess that wants to do everything - including playing podcasts. WHY? Why would anyone use this for listening to podcasts?? Everything that made it great is gone, and the very few options they added that looks interesting is now behind a paywall. So very sad to see a truly great and simple app get destroyed in one single update.
Room for Improvement
Overall, I think the app is close to what I’ve been looking for but I feel like with many others there’s too much the app is trying to do. I think if the app was more focused on movie night, family event planning, game night planning, and travel planning that it would elevate my experience with it. For example, I have no interest in adding “apps to check out” or “podcasts”, but what I have interest in is a better optimized planner where I can add episodes or movies we plan to watch using the app’s UI instead of manually typing things out/adding the cover art, etc. This would also create better logging since the stats don’t seem to show even when I manually log an episode. I’ve been using notes for movie night planning for so long and I would like an easier system but right now, this app is creating more work even though I do like the overall feel to it and the ability to share the event page with family. The countdown is also nice but again, without some improvements, it’s a lot of work.
Basic??
At its core, this is a very basic app. While it does bring all your media together in one place, it doesn’t really stand out. When you add movies, there are no community or critic reviews… just a summary and cast information. You can create “recipes” to add your own ratings and other details, but the overall experience feels limited. The app reminds me of the early days of the App Store, when simply having the basic functionality was enough. It works, but it lacks the depth, features, and community elements that many similar apps offer today. Not worth the subscription.
I love the lists function of this app. The other things are done better by other apps.
This app is incredibly useful for keeping track of things I’d like to get around to later. Whenever I hear a book or movie recommendation I’d like to save, it goes into Sofa. Whenever I finally get around to it, I rate it, leave a note and save it to a relevant list. It’s great! Books and movies are in the same place and I don’t have to use GoodReads and Letterboxd to separately track it all. I don’t need this app to also be a podcast player or event planner. I already have apps that do that really well. When I start using a downtime organizer to keep track of productivity, it begins to lose its purpose. Nothing else could make lists like this one. I only want the lists. Please, find some focus again and don’t let this app become so bloated.
Remember Delicious Library?
Back in the day, there was a lovely app that allowed you to hook up a barcode scanner to your Mac and scan the barcode of your owned books, CDs, DVDs, comic books, and the like. You’d then setup databases such as IMDB, to add metadata (movie posters, director information, etc). This app is an updated version of that, and some additional features deftly implemented. I get that a subscription model makes sense these days, though I think it’s crucial to provide a nice, add-free, free version, like they do! That is why I am glad to have updated to a subscription recently, to put some money behind a product with integrity. I wish there were more apps like this in the App Store. I didn’t see any other apps listed under the developer, but sometimes they’re listed individually… any other associated apps by the same developer? Thanks!
New update has ruined Sofa for me
It was a great app before, but now, after the most recent, big update, I can’t stand it. Way too much going on and is no longer usable for the things we used it for before. Devs, please consider rolling back this update—maybe releasing a separate app to be either the old Sofa or to be Sofa 5–you can see from the reviews that many of us feel the same way.
Almost there
EDIT: I’m really impressed to see that the developer has taken all of my points on board. Sequel’s search is still slightly better (because of the “most likely” behaviour, and the horizontal categories), and it shows better metadata like cast and crew, but almost everything else has been added. I’ll keep checking in periodically, and if the developer adds a Siri shortcut that jumps you straight to the search page with the keyboard ready to type, cast and crew meta data, and the ability to play podcasts from oldest to newest, then I’ll but a lifetime pass and switch immediately. It was a really difficult choice for me choosing between Sofa and Sequel, but ultimately I chose Sequel because it had a snappier search and a bigger focus on counting down to release dates. To the Sofa developer, here are the features that would convince me to buy a lifetime subscription: 1) The “pinned” widgets must include a prominent countdown to the release date (apologies if they already do, I don’t have premium so I can’t pin things) 2) There must be a quick search button that bypasses the need to specify media type, even better if you can make it an optional shortcut, or quick settings button that opens the app on a search with the keyboard ready to type. 3) Searching, should start auto-populating suggestions as you type. Overall, searching just has to be snappier tbh. 4) The pages for some media should provide a bit of meta data. I do use Sequel as a mini-IMDB. When I search for a movie or TV Show it is really helpful to have at least a list of actors and who the writers/directors are, with clickable links. Overall Sofa is a really great app, with a good vibe, but I think Sequel slightly edges it out.
Menubar icons under Sequoia
Hate apps that don’t care enough about Sequoia users to make sure Tahoe garbage-isms don’t show up. Sequoia users are the discerning ones, we’re the ones that care enough to resist the upgrade specifically because we don’t like Tahoe, at all.
Completely zapped my pile of books and films
I’ve used Sofa for more than a year in the non-premium version. I didn’t use it frequently but I did collect a nice list of books and movies to track. Today I was trying to add two items to my pile, and before I knew it, my whole previous list was gone. I can’t even tell you how that happened. I’m a fairly skilled iOS user so it astonishes me that I was able to do that. An app that gives a user the option of doing that accidentally needs to look for ways to stop that from happening.
Essential App for my Devices
I was on the hunt for an organizer and planner where I could keep all my games, movies, podcasts, etc. To my surprise, the planner feature is genuinely so helpful, all the info is so cleanly presented! The theme options are gorgeous as well, and I love when apps are super open to customization options! As someone who needed a place to put everything I could ever need, Sofa covers all of it. I understand some reviews are mentioning simplicity prior to Sofa 5, or that there are too many things added now, but I personally needed everything Sofa 5 has. In my opinion, the app is simple but straightforward enough to where everything is super neatly organized. Not to mention the customer support is also incredibly helpful and responsive. I had an issue and received a swift response. Person/people behind this app are great, UI is gorgeous, has everything you'd want in a planner and organizer for your down-times, and is overall such an essential app on all my devices. Thank you for making Sofa, it helps me more than you know. Keep up the amazing work, I'll be sticking around for many years to come! ❤️✨
Bloated mess
Used the app for years. Latest update completely ruined it. I hate it now. Very clunky and hard to use now.
90% of the app I want it to be.
I’ve been using Trakt for logging TV shows and movies for a few years now. Trying to transfer any amount of that over manually into this app is a pain. Starting from scratch there doesn’t feel great either. So having the option to at least import from there would be incredibly helpful to me. Then there is the podcast player. I’ve been using podcast players like Overcast and Pocketcasts for a number of years. Having an option to skip silences and/or having dynamic speed options has become the norm for how I listen to podcasts. Missing that feature is hard for me to get used to again. So I’ll stick with the other apps for that. I’d love the idea of this app to be my one-stop-shop for tracking everything I do in my downtime, but transitioning to it is a challenge without an easy way to import ways I’ve logged things in the past (the biggest thing being my Trakt history).
New Update is WAY Too Much
I have been using this app for years and love the simple, easy to use features. This update has made things far more complicated. It was unnecessary and makes it so much harder to see your progress. The features I love are buried and now I keep getting flagged to “upgrade” to use anything new. I don’t know who thought any of this was needed, but from a long-time user, this is awful!
Good concept but too much locked behind premium subscription
I briefly tried the app, but deleted it because $29 a year is too much for the mostly basic features that were locked behind premium (e.g., ratings).
Can’t Live Without It
I had no idea how much this app would improve my life. Wonderful way to organize all sorts of media and shopping lists!
Flimsy
Though this should be the answer to any TV or movie tracking app, it isn’t. The user interface isn’t intuitive and even the paid version has trouble tracking certain TV shows. I’m requesting a refund.
Sync needs work
I just started using this app (paid version) and it seems like cross-device syncing needs a lot of work. Every time I add new data on one device, the other devices suddenly create duplicate empty lists that I then have to delete. It makes me feel unsure about the reliability of the data I’m adding :( Other than that, great concept!
incredible app stopped working
sofa WAS best media reminder/planning app. i’ve used for years. it’s full of all kinds media i’ve been monitoring and tracking — tons of it. i recently came to learn that NONE of the media — books, tv, et al — i’ve added over the last six months is there. i figured surely i was doing something wrong. but no. i wasn’t. cannot add media to my lists or folders anymore. extremely frustrating.
Love this app but it there’s a few issues
I love Sofa and use it to track my watches movies/favorite movies, etc. However, lately the app will load and none of my saved movies will appear, it looks as it would if I had freshly installed it. Then I’ll refresh or come back a few hours later and everything is back where it was. It’s an odd bug that needs to be fixed. I also would love the ability to choose and customize layouts without having to pay for the upgraded version. Other than that, I use Sofa pretty much every day to track all things movie and tv show related!
Getting Better Every Day!
I rarely write app reviews, but I’m compelled to for Sofa. This is a fantastic, native app by a responsive developer who responds to feedback and is making it better with every release. I moved here from TV Time, and Sofa is so much more performant, looks nicer, and goes beyond what other apps in the space offer. Give it shot! I’m glad I did.
Sofa 5
I originally downloaded Sofa many years ago because it did one thing well. It was a clean, minimal way to keep track of what I watched, read, or played. That simplicity was the entire appeal. It stayed out of the way and acted like a lightweight companion rather than a system I had to manage. Sofa 5 completely abandons that philosophy. The app now feels like it’s trying to be everything at once, and in doing so, it lost what made it valuable. A media tracker has turned into a bloated all-in-one platform with trip planning, podcast playback, AI-generated lists, stats dashboards, and a level of customization that borders on exhausting. Instead of quickly adding something to a list, I’m now confronted with decisions about tracking methods, filters, “ingredients,” layouts, and metadata. The addition of a built-in podcast player is a good example of the problem. It’s not inherently bad, but it’s unnecessary. Most people already have a dedicated app for that. Integrating it here just adds weight and complexity to an app that used to be focused. The same applies to the planner and AI features. They feel like features built because they could be, not because they should be. Even the organization tools, which used to be a strength, now feel overengineered. Smart Lists with dozens of filters and custom fields sound powerful, but in practice they turn a simple “what should I watch next” question into something closer to managing a database. It’s excessive for what should be a casual, low-effort experience. There’s also a subtle shift in tone. The app now assumes you want to deeply quantify and optimize your downtime. Stats, logs, timelines, and insights are constantly surfaced. That might appeal to some users, but it changes the relationship entirely. What used to feel relaxed now feels tracked. Yes, you can hide certain features, but that doesn’t fix the core issue. The design direction has changed. The app is no longer built around simplicity first. It’s built around capability first, with simplicity as an optional layer you have to carve out yourself. Sofa used to respect your time. Now it competes for it.
So far so good, looking for PDF support
Just started using this app today. I like it very much. The only thing I wish for is support for oddball type things that I don’t really have a place to track. Sofa seems like the perfect solution. I like how it can search for different kinds of content. Shows, movies, games, apps all worked great. I like being able to group, and create lists. Only thing is, I haven’t found a way to list the oddball items for certain types. One example is self published books in PDF format. I can see the books I want to select on my files screen, but they’re grayed out. Maybe another file type is supported, but I haven’t found any help function and would rather avoid trial and error. Another thing is self published videos. I have a few in MP4 format. Seems impossible to add something stored as a file unless it’s in a content database. Maybe what I’m looking for is in the paid version. Or maybe there’s an online forum to help me. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the app.
Interesting concept, missing basic features
I love the idea of tracking ALL media in one place, but what’s the point of tracking if you can’t store basic info like “last episode watched” and “current page number”??? Maybe that’s a paid feature, I don’t know. There’s nothing about tracking that kind of stuff anywhere in the app.
expensive
good app but way too expensive for what it is and no one-time purchase offer so i am not going to use it.
Favorite app ever
Love the new update & all the features. It’s like the developer read my mind.
Not usable
Sync with iCloud shows up and doesn’t go away
love it
It is a good app to keep up with books to read, movies to watch. But it is not cheap!
Items disappear from smart lists
Items disappear and reappear from smart lists unpredictably.
Not great on iPad
I like the idea of this app and the layout is fine on the phone (not particularly fun/aesthetic and quite clunky - but fine) - however, I use this more on the iPad and would prefer to be able to customise the home screen rather than have everything I’ve saved only appear as a thumbnail menu on the left.
This app is a tool.
With the latest update (Sofa 5), the creators have made it a no-brainer. They have solidified that they truly understand how a user wants to interact with an app like this: a functional tool you can mold to your own needs. I’m someone who thinks in systems and user interactions. I’ve finally figured out how to use Sofa to catalog my entire relationship with media: things I’ve loved in the past, what I’m currently consuming, and what I might love in the future. The progress tracking was HUGE! and along with improved searching, the upcoming tab, and especially the persistent tab states (keeping my place in the planner even after closing the app) make this feel less like a database and more like a workflow. It doesn't force you into a rigid box; it gives you the flexibility to build a system that works for you. I don't usually write reviews, but this update is spectacular. That said, I have two areas for the devs to consider for the future: Friction Points: The biggest hurdle is the "moment of entry." I’d love to see ways to reduce friction when I’m in the middle of something—like seeing a trailer or hearing about a book—and want to log it instantly without fully diving into the app. A "quick-capture" flow would keep me in the moment while ensuring the data is captured for later. UX Refinement: While the core is spectacular, there are still some "funky" flows when trying to do things in bulk. Efficiency: Certain processes could use a bit of a touch-up to make moving through the app feel as efficient as the system it allows me to build. Shoot for the Moon: • Data Portability: I’d love the ability to have a markdown of all my data saved in a file system or have a robust way to export my entire catalog at any time: expanding the product of what using this app builds for me. • Visual Inputs: What if I could share a screenshot or photo to Sofa and have it automatically scan and add that media to "The Pile"? • Social & Stats: A global "leaderboard" or a "Sofa Stat" showing how many other users have a specific item in their lists would be fascinating. Not just what’s trending on the sources but in addition to it showing what people who use an app like this are adding. (Building a culture of taste sharing and sharpening) • Intelligent Personalization: Imagine custom recommendations generated by Sofa based on the unique DNA of our entire catalog. The implications for how this app can integrate into the future landscape of personalized tech and media consumption are massive. I’m genuinely excited to see where they take it next.
i give up
i’ve given this app so many chances and it felt like *maybe*, *MAYBE* all the syncing issues were fixed, finally. i was so sure that it wouldn’t be a problem anymore that i bought an annual subscription. what a mistake. it *still* desynced my mac and iphone. restoring from automatic backup? failed. restoring from a manual backup? duplicated all my lists and now i have to do a bunch of cleanup. what a joke. just use obsidian or any other text editor. its far more reliable than this. so frustrated and disappointed.
Enhanced List
It's great to be able movr around the movies and shows you're eyeing to watch. Wish i could mark what episodes i last watched for shows with notifications for new seasons coming up once I'm caught up
Could be so much more useful
Sofa could be so much more useful if you can sort lists by ingredient values. I want to be able to visually see how I would rank movies, tv shows, etc….
Small problem
Seem to have lost all my data !! It’s all in there somewhere but I can’t seem to access it. Ugggh
Love the new changes! Great direction for the app
Excited to see whats next
Everything Disappeared
I’ve been using Sofa for several years to save movies and TV that I want to watch, as well as books to read. I logged in today to add a new movie to the list and I discovered that literally everything I had saved has disappeared, with no apparent way to recover the information. I don’t know if this happened due to an app update or what the underlying cause is, but I haven’t had issues with any other apps recently, leading me to believe this is an apps specific issue. It’s incredibly frustrating to loose the information I had, and I can’t in good conscious recommend that anyone use this.
Used to be awesome
UPDATE: the developer reached out and helped rectify what appears to be a weird issue with duplicate data in my logbook file. Thanks for reaching out Shawn, much appreciated! I’d go 5 stars but am a little concerned it can happen at all, though Shawn is working on a fix. ORIGINAL REVIEW: This was a great app for managing downtime and entertainment. Unfortunately of late it’s been a disaster and I regret investing so much time into it. My lists disappear completely, requiring reinstall of app or recovery from backup just duplicate every list, entries then became undeletable, copying lists duplicated every entry in the list so there was two of each item. And occasionally the lists all disappear. Disappointing.
2 Stars for a great app. 2 Stars for constant pop ups after purchase.
I like Sofa. It’s obviously a passion project of a single dev or a small team. There is a lot in the app, maybe too much. It’s rather well designed in any event. The trouble is that, after paying for it and spending 5 minutes in the app on MacOS after purchase, I was met with the constant barrage of focus taking notifications that asked me (more than 10 times, after restarts, delete and reinstalls, etc) to leave this review. I could not get the pop ups to go away or stop showing up by doing anything other than rating the app.
A Pretty Great App - Needs a couple of tweaks to get my money.
As soon as the option to add your own artwork for items that the search can’t find, a subscription will be paid for! It seems that most of the books I read don’t appear when searched for.
Decent
This is a really decent app to sort TV, Books, Games, etc.
Constant Nag Popups
Sofa used to be great, but this was before every item you added prompted you to upgrade to a subscription and every pane change prompted you to rate it in the store. The kicker is no matter what star you select, it defaults to 5 stars. I wonder how many 5 star reviews here are actually 1 - 2 stars instead.
Getting worse
I’ve used this app for a while now and it’s very useful but recent updates have made it confusing. I can no longer see how to add an item to the category I want it in.
Price!
I would consider this app if it was cheaper but as it stands is way too expensive for what it does. Alternatively, lista is a much cheaper option.
Very nice app, but…
This is a very nice app for keeping track of books, movies and shows that you’d like to read or see. Unfortunately, the price of a subscription is way too high. I’d gladly support the app by purchasing it, but refuse to pay as much monthly as I am paying for Apple TV.
