Best Chess Board
Best way to learn Openings & Middle game
This app is DEAD
Bought my grand kingdom set about 6 years ago. The board is cool, but the app is absolutely atrocious. Good luck finding anyone who will actually play against you in the square off app that isn’t cheating. If you do manage to pair against somebody (even if they are a cheater) consider yourself lucky. Most times I want to use this app I will wait for literal hours in between games. On top of that the support/ service side of square off does not care about you or their own product.
Updates have improved the game
So far so good.
No Chess.com
Since some updates to Chess.com, it is no longer possible to play on Chess.com. Since the app hasn't had an update in 6 months, I'm thinking of ditching the Squate Off Pro for a device that will be directly compatible with Chess.com.
Great concept, poor implementation
I’ve had no end of trouble connecting to my chess.com account, because it uses an authentication method, not supported by the app so I had to create a new account entirely that used email authentication only. Lichess works better, but neither of these seem to have any games popping up recently, I wait forever, and just give up. I think the devs gave up on this product.
AI chess
This square off chess is amazing for learning and playing by yourself
lol
I’m tired of getting pushed to this page after EVER SINGLE GAME. So here this is a review. Funny even after you leave a review it forces you back in case you wanna change your mind. If I could give no stars I would
Well made board and pieces
Its interesting. But, clarification, stream games doesn’t mean stream my own games from Lichess. I want to play games with both players (me and my friend) onto the board. That’s not possible (yet) Thanks for clarified information tech support.
Not safe for kids
We love our grand kingdom set. It’s been going on strong for 5 years. The app, however has a big concern from me. My son has an account to learn chess and play with the board. He is getting inappropriate messages that say “Hi”. Luckily, he cannot open them! However, there are no options to block or delete them! There should be a way to deactivate messaging in the app, but there is not. Also, as a side note, I wish there were a way to use the app (he has a Plus account) with a pass and play feature to play chess with someone next to you without the board. Seems like an easy thing to do and overlooked by the developers.
Won’t let me take pieces against the ai:/
What the title says
Fun at chess!
Love playing against AI!such a delight!
App analyzes wrong player
Every game it analyzes my opponent like it’s me. No obvious way to fix it.
It was clunky to get started
It was clunky to get started
Terrible app and ok hardware
I have the square off swap which although inconsistent in speed and very cheap feeling works fine if the app decides to actually work. The app is just terrible almost every single game I start I get kicked from the app and “abandon the game” even when streaming (which is the main reason I bought this) i can’t finish a single game. The crashes would at least be almost manageable if you could continue the game after it crashes but you can’t as soon as you get back into the app you have to restart. Stepping away from the bugs the UI itself isn’t great and I find it unfortunate that you are restricted to their app and can’t use chess.com or lichess apps (you can still play games thru those accounts but it goes thru the square off app). Again with the streaming the games are just in a list with no search or filters and you can’t stream past games u less they are in the last day and you can control the stream itself it’s just goes at a constant unchanging speed with no pause or slow and any control at all. Cmon these bugs make the board and app unusable and even if there are no bugs the lack of very necessary normal functions makes it a terrible app. Please fix this stuff as soon as possible and maybe I won’t throw my chess board into a fire.
Wish it were better
Unfortunately, very clunky interface
Awesome
Nice
Keeps asking me to rate the app after each game
I don’t appreciate the pop up. I already rated it five stars before but I still get the freaking pop up after every game. It’s annoying

Resist Buying A Square Off Chess Board Computer
The app has many very good features. Their computer chess boards that can use it are highly questionable purchases. My new SWAP chess computer board that moves its own pieces operated ONLY TWO GAMES BEFORE FAILING!
Love the board but glitches in the app
Loving grand kingdom and playing chess all over the world. Problem: the clock continues to count down my time while the board moves the pieces for the other player. This adds up quickly in a rapid game and gives the other player the advantage. This does not happen when playing a rapid game against the AI. Please fix this. Updated to add: There is no way to cancel the app. It is very glitchy. Followed directions to cancel. It is not an option. Sent customer service emails. No response. Will be contacting my bank unless I hear from you.
Wow - for the novice and Master
In my humble opinion, this is a great play-partner, trainer and opponent. Especially cool are when the pieces are moving on their own. Super value and looks great.
You can not cancel your account
Do not sign up!!! They will auto renew and there is no ability to cancel or delete your account. When I try to cancel my account, mysteriously I lose connection to the server (I have a screen shot). I have tried this over and over. There is no where else to change your account settings. Run!!! This is going to be a nightmare to cancel. Not worth it. I would do zero stars if it let me.
One problem
Great app and everything works fine however its a battery drainer. After playing 2-3 games the battery on my phone is basically halved. There must be a way for them to make a low power mode or something so the battery doesn't die on your device so quickly while the app is on.
Amazing product, battery killer app
The app generally is good and the product (in my case the Square Off Pro) is superb. BUT, this app needs some serious optimising as it rinses battery quicker than you can say “check mate”! I need to have iPhone 13 Pro plugged in to a power source or each game (online or offline) will drain battery fast. We’re talking 40% drain in 60 mins. I can’t stress enough how good the board and experience is, but the impact on battery really does spoil the whole show. :(
Board trouble
Having several probablems with board working correctly. Was fun when it worked.
Love my grand kingdom & neo!
Love my grand kingdom & neo! Got them a couple of years ago. It’s worth it.
Awesome concept killed by greed
Bought the for my son thinking it would a great way to enjoy digital & IRL chess together, but all the hidden costs were unreal after the pricey board purchase. Fell into disuse almost immediately. =(
Square off
I love it . First just want to say the pro board is a great advancement for chess on line. But I have an issue I can’t fix. Sometimes when playing on line my board all of a sudden start to flash. Different squares start flashing all over the board. If my time is running when it starts I can’t fix it and when my time runs out I lose. It my opponents time is running I have wait till his time runs out and I win. Not sure if my opponent has lost connection or quit playing etc. Either way I can’t reconnect to him. This is most frustrating. Im wasting playing time waiting for time outs. I’m sure my connection is good because I still have Internet on my other devices. Also can you not show the opponents rating while we play? Anyway I would appreciate any information re what happening. Thanks Chris D.
System bugs
The system is still not working property, stalling all the time when playing against SquareOff. The Undo button doesn’t work mist of time. The system should sound when the King is being checked.
iPhone Overheating While Playing Online Game
I love the Square Off Pro; squares are accurate, recognition is quick, and I have read how far the app has gone. I would have hoped massive battery drain for this app is more efficient. In the meantime, I give the app a 3 when compared to other apps that use very little battery life and do not heat my phones.
Grand Kingdom chess set
I have had the Grand Kingdom chess set for several years. It has been working perfectly. Lately I had a software glitch. I emailed support and they contacted me and resolved the issue very quickly. I was impressed with their knowledge and response.
Not working properly!
I have had to quit playing 3 times because it wouldn’t register my move.
Square off pro
Good app. Two things I would like to see is to be able to follow top games over the internet to the board and to play black with out turning the board around. I wouldn’t mind paying for this as an extra. Great product I would recommend to anyone.
Ошибки
Глючит обновление. В ходе игры пропадает связь с доской.
Awesome game but big problem
The game was amazing until the update and now I can only do certain moves instead of what I want to do. The game use to be way better.
Wow so cool!
This is one of the best chess apps out there ! I really enjoy all the cool features and the cool part is it’s connected to the square off chess board I received , The board itself is also amazing ! It’s so cool it moves on it’s own and you can play with other people and AI! I highly recommend it to everyone!
Cancel membership??
How do you cancel a membership? There isn’t any option on the app to cancel as stated in FAQs.
Add classic archive matches
The app runs great, but I would like a feature to be added: I would like to import old games to the app and stream it on board like Fischer vs Tal or just make the app to have access to old chess matches archive
Landscape for iPad?
iPad lacks landscape...fail.
Good app but used to be better
When the app originally came out it was a little easier to navigate and all of the features were unlocked. Now it has gotten a bit more busy and more advanced features are limited for free and hidden behind a paywall if you want to use them unlimited. Disappointed to see a money grab like that on an app that you need in order for their “smart” chess boards to actually be smart.
U
I like it so good like so good like I don’t even know how to explain it but it’s so good. I just wanted to read it. It five star cause it’s so good.
Glitchy, convoluted, frustrating
If this app and board worked, it’d be amazing. As it is, the pieces slide—the board never really flattened out for me, the moves aren’t always recorded accurately, and there are no ways to adjust moves—you have to resign or pause/quit. I first had issues with the five free AI games—all but one glitched so I couldn’t finish any of them except the last one. Then, I had to pay to play the AI. I subscribed for $29/year, but it didn’t register on my app, the free trial registered, but now I’m trying to find a way to cancel my paid subscription. This is all frustrating since no one wants to give back $, I’m on a scavenger hunt for answers. Customer support is not helpful, I got a robo-email response saying SquareOff was acquired by Miko and to wait for further updates. Great. I’m over this ridiculous concept—it could’ve been great but it’s too buggy and frustrating. Do the old-school board w/pieces, so much simpler.
Decent app but locking horizontal view
Great looking app. Due to the video and chat capabilities, I wish there were parental controls. When playing on iPad, horizontal orientation would have been nice since it is difficult to hold the iPad the entire time instead of resting it horizontally with the Smart Keyboard. Such an obvious benefit, not sure why it was omitted.
Coins and diamonds
Was a good app until coins and diamonds appeared on the board. What are they for and can I get rid of them.
Good when it works
I tried to download the new update but that wouldn’t work so it does tend to misfunction but it’s good when it doesn’t.
Great app with or without the board.
This app is great integration of all the current chess platforms. When paired with the square off board, you can challenge other users, bots, and other player via lichess.org or chess.com.
Do not buy this product.
The square off app, which is required to use most of the functions of the square off board is awful. I stopped using it over a year ago and just recently got back on to see if any of the issues have been fixed, and they have not. Still very buggy. If you enter a game, your opponents time does not automatically start. They can just sit and there is still no way to abort the game, so you just have to resign. I’m not sure if this is a strategy by player to increase their rating or if they are legitimately having connectivity issues, but it happens quite often. The app is basically unusable. Any ratings higher than a 2 star have got to be fake. Please download the app and take a look before you buy any of the square off products. There are so many better options on the market now.
One issue
The live games won’t show the game on the board it said not supported the only flaw that’s why I give it a 4 star
Issues with the New updates
Hi SquareOff Developers, Yesterday I installed the new update and I have couple of very serious issues I found so far: 1- for the first time ever the board started to glitch during the game and stopped even moving pieces with high noise of the mechanical parts inside the board as if it’s working against it self or outside its boundaries. 2- what I did is I had to end the game on the app to and then reset the pieces. Here I had another freaking experience. The board basically started to move pieces in messy way and even moving some black piece from the black side deck through the board to white side deck and some pieces pushed into couple of squares in the initial squares of the queues and kings. Basically it was really mess I even thought I lost the board it will need a repair. 3- I thought about turning it off first but it happened again so I did a board lock hoping that will put back everything in to its position. The lock down process didn’t complete and by the next step after the mechanical arms started to move the beeping sound started and never stoped until I turned of the board. 4- I said let’s hope this is going to work now. I streamed the first game to see if things are back to normal and I was happy that it did. Then again after streaming the second game the board moved a piece and the app marked it but the game stopped. 5- also as mentioned by another reviewer that the option of open challenges shows the seconds as minutes so for instant I picked 30 minutes and 45 second increments, it will be shown as 30m | 45m challenge. Now I don’t know for the first few issues wether I can play with board or not because of these issues. And it wasn’t there until I installed the new update. These issues are quit serious and it will need quick fix. Regards,
Great when it works
Is a pretty decent app when all is going smoothly. Had a few times when playing someone with the connected board and a game will just get stuck. Not registering that a move has been made. Issue persisted for a few games until we restarted the board. If problems like this can’t be fixed then the app needs some way of communicating issues back to the user.
