Good but
Good but not all the quotes are contemplations an out death
Potential Sui.cidal ideation
Although the Bhutan ’tradition’ of contemplating your death 5 times a day may have been very helpful. I don’t think in this format it is appropriate. The format of a dopamine/cortisol spike plus the reminder you have to die… I believe that it has made my sui.cidal ideation worse or has brought a return of it. A friend of mine also experienced similar. Something to avoid or beware of.
Great concept, technical issues
I’ve been an evangelist of the app for many years and have subscribed to Leap, the premium version, for years as well. Unfortunately, the quote database is still barely above average, and I’ve been locked out of my account (and premium benefits) before without resolution or support reply. I had to create a new account as a workaround. Too bad the app creator doesn’t give this great concept all the attention it deserves, even at a higher price point.
Far too much repetition
There are literally thousands of quotations about death, if not tens of thousands. Please try google, then build up your database.
Quotes aren’t about death anymore.
Please improve the quotes because I used to love this app! I wholeheartedly love the concept of this app. In the beginning it was FULL of fantastic quotes surrounding death. After circulating many of the same quotes I upgraded. Unfortunately, while some quotes are still about death, now many are not at all. Just random quotes. Some don’t even make sense or are incomplete sentences. Some are misattributed. I think they might let high usage subscribers add their own to the general pool without vetting whether they are about life or death at all. I get there are a lot of quotes needed, but the point is to contemplate DEATH and DYING or living a good life and many just have nothing to do with the subject. I really do enjoy the daily reminder! I’m keeping it for sure. It wakes me up and helps me immediately focus on what is truly important. But I would love to see some regulation so my daily reminder can actually be about death.
Perspective-giving
The powerful impact of these reminders is really wonderful and the advertising is true- brings happiness! Great quotes. This app is wonderful.
Ew, they quote JK Rowling
Deleting bc seeing her name makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
Needs more quotes
My family members have said that they have received the same quotes up to five times. It seems like it would be easy enough to keep updating the quotes and regularly adding more to the database. Otherwise, it’s an interesting concept and has helped me to have a more grounded mindset.
not like it used to be
I have used this app for a long time and I really enjoyed it, but since they added a premium version the quality of the free version has really gone down. And I absolutely don’t begrudge them needing to make some money to keep the app going, but the way to do that is to add new features for premium and maybe an optional tip jar to the free version, not to make the free version worse by making all the quotes “inspirational” (insipid) celebrity babble. Unfortunately the premium version doesn’t seem worth it -ironically what drew me to the app in the first place was the promise to not make just another “mindfulness” app with goals/streak achievements and all that noise, which is exactly what leap appears to be. What made this app unique has been largely pruned away for the sake of marketability, and frankly if one is just looking for generic inspirational quotes X number of times a day then there are dozens of better apps on the market for that. It’s even possible to build something that does this yourself with very little tech know-how. Capitalism ruins everything, yada yada… just goes to show that trying to make non-attachment and meditations on mortality into a consumable product is probably an unworthy and unworkable goal from the outset. That’s maybe a good thing, and the thought definitely makes deleting an app I’ve used daily for years feel a bit less sad. And even in saying goodbye to WeCroak there’s a final speck of wisdom to take from it: all things end. It was nice while it lasted.
Needs more quotes
I’m seeing the same quotes every time. Update with some new ones please.
Definitely has an effect
I’ve been using this app for about 2 weeks now and it’s incredible how something so simple has such an effect - it’s a little hard getting used to seeing that message pop up on your screen at first but I’ve noticed that since I’ve used it I’m a lot more relaxed about many things - it’s a cliche but really not sweating the small stuff as much and just generally letting things go more
Cheated
I bought the app, and then with an update it moved to subscribe mode. Thanks for taking away what I paid for.
Be sure WHO you are quoting
“I am become death, the destroyer of worlds” J. Robert Oppenheimer Please please quit attributing this to Oppenheimer!! It’s from the Hindu sacred text in the Bhagavad Gita. Oppenheimer only QUOTED it. It makes your app look ignorant and it’s a lovely app. I’ve seen it twice now .
Great concept, poor execution
I love the idea of this app and have had it for a few years but frankly it’s a bit silly now. The quotes that pop up are more and more completely unrelated to the subject of death and more and more celebrity oriented rather than serious Buddhist thought or philosophers in general. Sorry but Dolly Parton isn’t my go-to sage for pondering my inevitable death.
Quote critique
Love the concept, but all the quotes I’ve gotten have used he/him pronouns or explicitly only referred to men when discussing grander truths or observations about life.
Death is letting go
This is a wonderful app, and I have found that I have been much more conscious of this precious life as I think about death more often. I read in some reviews that not all the quotes were about death. Hogwash. Letting go is an essence of death. I wonder if these quotes, this app brings up fear of letting go, which is common in our death-phobic society. This app is one small tool to help in facing these fears. A wonderful app indeed
Great concept but content is lacking
It’s a wonderful concept but 95% of the quotes are pretty bad. I switched over to the paid subscription to see if it was any better but immediately cancelled that after getting a quote from Paris Hilton. I think it’s useful for the unpaid subscription, just to get the 5 reminders that you’re going to die, but don’t bother opening the notifications. I send daily quotes to family members and friends so I have a huge library of words if wisdom and inspiration. WeCroak, I’m for hire if it’s just a matter of you all not having time to scour the internet for useful quotes! I appreciate the intention of creating an app like this, it just seems they had a great idea but ran out of steam to really follow through to make it good.
It can be thought provoking.
I really like this app. I want to love it, but some of the quotes are confusing and don’t make sense. I paid for extra content, and so far that has been good. Thank you for this app, may the quotes keep improving 🙌
Decent
For some reason the app reminders often ‘break’ (don’t send) and I have to re-configure. You can’t share the quotes & they sometimes have quotes from “luminaries” like RuPaul & David Hogg…
Important subject, weak content
Just learned they offer “harder hitting quotes” in the paid subscription which wouldn’t be difficult considering the weak ones that come free. Some of them - often repeated - appear to be randomly selected, not really pertinent. I’d consider a subscription if the free version wasn’t underwhelming because this is an essential tool for a good life.
2nd Best to Holy Quran
I literally never write reviews for anything whatsoever. But besides the Holy Quran, this Has to be one of the best apps I’ve ever downloaded. Just like praying five times a day do you get five daily reminder notifications from this app. If you don’t open the notifications they’ll eventually stop sending any. Constant quotes and reminders to make our lives in this world a better place. God bless whoever made and published this app. They must really care about people to make an app like this. I wish there was more quotes as every now and then I see the same quotes I’ve read before, but other than that it’s great can’t think of anything better. as for the premium features, it’s a nice addition. I don’t use anymore but it’s cool. One concern I do have is when I take pictures of my own and literally never see them again so that’s weird.
App needs work
I was really excited to use this app as a Buddhist and meditator. I was disappointed in the app’s performance as my 5 daily quotes didn’t come through, and the app itself is lacking in terms of settings and controls. It’s a great idea just not executed well.
Simple and straightforward, just how I like it.
Wish the notifications contained the actual text instead of prompting to open the app.
Why
You have quotes that have literally nothing to do with death and it’s pathetic you have a Jim Morrison quote saying “I like people who shake other people up and make them feel uncomfortbatle” in every sense of the word ‘death’ this quote has nothing to do with it and it’s pathetic and I almost unsubscribed because of it and if the quote tomorrow has nothing to do with death I will intact delete it.
Poor quotes
A good amount of the quotes really seem unrelated to the goal of the app. Until there is more granularity or customization, I think paying for this app is not at all useful.
Love the Quotes
I’ve only been using this for a couple of weeks but I am really loving it. I also love the notification alert “remember you are going to die...” makes me smile every time I see it as it’s just the truth but with a bit of humor in there.
Can’t be used
I tried to get in touch with the developers because Leap no longer works in my iPad. It will not load although I’ve tried many times I hope I can get an answer for this
Not always great quotations
I love this app for my remainders of mortality. Definitely valued in that regard. But more attention needs to be paid to some of the quotations. Not all are reminders of death or mortality. “Hidden messages shared in symbolic language”? What does that even mean? Death is good enough. The pseudo-mysticism takes me out of the experience. (Also the Bhagavad Gita is misquoted as Oppenheimer. I know he said it, but he was reading the Gita at the time.)
A little too much
There’s mindfulness, and then there’s obsessiveness. Getting a notification five times a day about death definitely toes that line.
I like this app but I wish widgets worked
The quote only shows up once for a little bit then it goes blank unless you delete and reinstall the widgets. Wish it consistently worked
Fantastic!
Bugs fixed long ago. I’m just now coming back to update the review. Still loving this app. —- After having had it a few weeks, I love this app. I absolutely love it. I’ve suggested it to several people who don’t understand why I would, but this death-thinking 5x a day is a good thing for me. However, the last several days it got stuck on a single quote. I stopped getting notifications and every time I opened it, it had the same quote. I restarted my phone. Still the same. I just uninstalled and reinstalled it. While I haven’t gotten a notification yet, when I opened the app, there was a new quote. Hoping that problem is fixed now.
Subscription?
I paid for this app several years ago and absolutely loved it. The app is now a subscription. I thought the app would probably honor previous purchases but apparently not. It no longer works properly for me. I’m very disappointed.
Great but can you fix the widget?
Widget doesn’t display the new quote. Open it and still says “Open for a quote…” after exiting. Otherwise great app all around
Interesting Concept, Bad Quotes
I’m trying to use this app to develop a momento mori mindset in my spiritual life. What is hindering this right now is the questionable quotes that aren’t even about death, but failure. What I’d like to see implemented is an option to input quotes about death that we find on our own.
Repetitive
Good at first, then some quotes were overused🙁
It’s improved!
When I first got this app in November 2017, I found the concept interesting but the practice underwhelming. The quotes were very weak, and that’s all the app really was at the time. Forcing myself to open WeCroak every time I got a notification was a meaningless chore. Since I downloaded it again, though, I found that the quotes have generally improved. Sure, they’re not all winners, but many have done a great job at getting me to ponder my own death in ways I haven’t done before. Opening the app when there’s a new notification has become a fulfilling, rewarding experience. The Leap system is a nice touch, though I’m not sure I’m willing to pay for a subscription service in order to use it. But this app has come a long way from 2017. WeCroak has matured - and now, so have I.
Misleading
They promote this app as if your phone will send notifications with quotes throughout the day. However, the reality is you get zero notifications. The only way you can read the quotes is by manually opening the app. If I wanted to read quotes, I can Google it (for free).
Re-Think Subscription Income Model
I like the app, but I won’t pay for it on a subscription basis. I am not interested in the additional services you describe in the subscription service. But, I would like to see you add more different quotes on a regular basis. Maybe you could even ask app users for quotes to add to the rotation. I do find it helpful to receive these daily reminders, but want more variety and less repetition.
We broke
Paid money, installed app, didn’t function at all. Lovely concept, but it just didn’t work. Giving it an extra star because I still thought about death each time I tried to get it to do anything. Would love a refund.
Same Quotes
I get the same quotes every week.
I love this app!
What this app does for me is to remind me, several times a day, to ponder something in life more meaningful than the daily headlines. If you don’t understand a quote, all the better! You are invited to ponder.
Does not work
I’m going to get my money back. How is it possible you’ve released an update that is not backwards compatible with other iOS versions?! Super frustrating, love the idea, hate the execution.
Good app
Would prefer to have the quotes in my notifications rather than having to open the app
Just OK
It’s a neat idea, and about half of the quotes resonate for me. I was initially annoyed to have zero control over the frequency or timing of notifications (choices are the default 5/day at random times or to delete the app), so I chose to disallow notifications.
Step it up!
I loved this app the first week I had it then I just got repeats. The concept is cool I wish they put some more energy into it.
Favorite App
Think it might be free now but it was well worth the $1 I paid for it. This app has notified me several times during particularly stressful situations and it always helps re-center me. I think everyone could benefit from this app
I LOVE this idea, but the app won't open
I just bought this, and the app won't open on my iPhone....
🌌 Memento mori🌲
My longtime friend died recently. I've used WeCroak daily since. I suggest: > allow an option to archive favorites. Yes, a screenshot works...but it makes sense to include saving quotes in the app > allow an option to set the number of notifications each day. Please consider leaving this decision to the user > add quality quotes. Currently some are soul-piercing, some are filler. Perhaps every 100th quote you could request users’ favorite mortality quotation/s? If you need to set an in-app-purchase for these features, many will be ready, including me, Please don’t add these features to the “Leap” subscription, though. Thanks.
Not worth $1-$2
Disappointed with the quotes
Not all death quotes
It was pretty good for a while but after about a week it runs out of quotes about death, and just starts sharing general random quotes about life. I really wanted all the quotes to be about death
