Nearly free shows a care for Japanese
I’m solidly enjoying the process of learning Japanese through this one. You’re able to drill yourself on specific groups of letters. It really helps me learn to recognize the difference between them. It’s nice how the ads work barely notice them!!!
Won’t sync across devices
Nice app to study Japanese kana but it won’t sync from iPhone to iPad. Developer response to queries is total rubbish

The look the lessons everything is great just missing across device syncing. Pain to have to manually do across devices. I purchased it hoping that would be a PRO feature or something. Either way thank you! for the hard work keep it up. I will change to FIVE stars once we can get Across device syncing.

Real katakana words suggestion please!
I love this app. It has helped me memorize my hiragana alphabet and I'm still working towards the katakana. I just have one suggestion to the developers - that is to use the actual katakana vocabulary in the katakana practice drills. Because it gets very confusing for new learners to distinguish between the use of katakana for animals plus foreign words and the original Japanese words that are supposed to be written in hiragana. Otherwise, thank you for developing this app. I've been using another one to help me with this confusion, so it would be highly appreciated if you could use actual katakana words. Another suggestion would be to be able to listen again on demand to the greetings done by the greeting character. I'm often curious to be able to reread, click on it, and practice what it said.
Good but could do better
It’s very good for learning to read Japanese but after a while the line by line strategy doesn’t work. I started forgetting what ‘Ki’ and other letters were and the app didn’t review it much. On top of that, if you want to learn how to read Japanese correctly you would need a side app for vocabulary since this supplies very few and basic words. But its helped me learn Japanese better so thank you MARU Japanese!!!

Good for starting but not mastering
Out of apps that I tried, this one has the best audio on the Kana pronunciation which helped a lot for beginners. The UI/UX are intuitive to some level but the app settings and lesson settings are in separate screens which confuses me a little. Multiple exercise types really helped with the learning (reading, writing, and word meanings) but the word set are quite small and get repetitive real quick to the level that I can “guess” what the word is by just reading first two kana. The progression is quite restrictive, you can set the “Unlock Speed” but for men the slowest speed still too fast for me. I wish instead of setting the unlock speed, I could pause the progression so that I keep mastering what I already know and progress further (resume progression) when I’m comfortable. With that being said, you can “progress backward” by decrease how many kana row is unlocked/mastered. But because the “slow” unlock speed is still too fast for me, I often have to go “progress backward” after a few lessons which is quite cumbersome. The option to pause the progression can easily solve this pain point. There is option to select which individual kana you want to drill but you have to select hundreds of kana one by one. And this has to be done each time you want to drill, you cannot save them as a practice set that you can add/remove the kana you want to practice. You to do this each time you open the app, which is not useful at all. Lastly (still on the progression), your progressions and statistics aren’t synced across devices. You have to manually set your progress on your other devices due to “technical issues” as per the app’s FAQ. The FAQ also stated that the Android version is not available with “No way, I’m not a fan of Android, and you’ve got the excellent taste for using iOS” and “It won’t be as awesome as the iOS version” but choose not to go “all in” into the Apple Ecosystem where they provide the built-in option to leverage the user’s iCloud to privately and securely store the user data without additional effort (because the CloudKit integrate seamlessly with the logged in Apple ID). If you choose to be the iOS-only app, make sure to leverage the ecosystem to the fullest extent. As stated, this app is “good for starting but not mastering”. Start with this app, enjoy the good audio and easy to use experience from this app but pair this app with another one with better progression system like the Kana app or else you will get annoyed by the progression limitations real quick. Hope to see the improvements on the points I mentioned. This app has the potential to be the best all rounders Kana app and become the one app that beginner from the start to the end.
Best app for learning kana!
Just started my Japanese journey and I’m about a week in with the hiragana section almost complete. This app has been amazing for helping me remember the kana as well as practicing the sounds since I always repeat it out loud. And it’s all free!! You only have to deal with ads every 5 times you get something wrong. Definitely the best app for learning kana!!

The drills are great practice to learn hiragana and katakana in a fun way! I just wish they had the option to practice writing the characters yourself.
Best beginner app for learning kana
The UI is clean and modern with no ads. Realistic voices, not AI or TTS, grace your ears. You can add how many questions you want, you can choose specifically which characters you want to review (which is my fav feature) and can choose reading or listening questions and more. This app builds a great foundation for your Japanese learning journey.

This app is great for quick quizzes and personalisation when wanting different thing to focus on. My personal favourite has to be themode where you can choose what specific characters you want to practice and the ability to see your weak points with their gradient indicators! But I do wish there were a little less ads. ｡･ﾟ･(ﾉ∀`)･ﾟ･｡ by far my fav app for practicing Japanese characters! ✨❤️
