Horrible Algorithm and Draw Rate

The art style is incredible. The game mechanics are unique and fun. And the lore is deep, sophisticated, and intriguing. But the draw rates are one of the WORST in all of mobile gaming history. I cannot comprehend the logic behind the draw rates. Either the developers believed having an influx of too much mana or too many monsters could constitute “difficulty,” or there has been a serious lack of judgement of what makes a game fun. I played several games in which I draw over 14 sigils one after another in one match. Then I tried to create a new deck and again drew an absurd amount of monsters one after another (about 9) without any sigils; and then played a new game where I drew 11 sigils one after another without monsters. The algorithm used to “randomize” decks is a joke. I tried to go online and create decks based on the suggestions of other players. And still, the algorithm makes the draw rates hilariously bad. One just cannot have a “balanced” deck in this game at all, no matter what one does. I tried to reduce the number of cards in my deck; I tried to increase it. I added more sigils, reduced sigils, added more spells, reduced spells, etc. NOTHING WORKS. Playing against other players becomes impossible, and the AI will ALWAYS win in PVE. These imbalances make it so that players continue to believe that there is a thin possibility of beating this algorithm; which then gives incentive to spend more time making decks; which inevitably leads to wanting to purchase packs; which then leads to spending money. I highly recommend NOT downloading this game. The draw rates are very bad, the AI is rigged against you all the time, and no matter what you do for however long, you will always end up drawing too many monsters at a time or too many sigils. You cannot win at any event or match with this game. Other games exist that have better randomized algorithms for balanced draw rates. Yugioh Duel Links, while with its own meta problems, is descent. There is a reason why games like that continue to evolve with constant new updates whereas this one just stagnates. It’s a shame. This game has amazing potential, and the artwork is very cool. I really like the different characters and stories as well, and I could see this becoming a Netflix show or a YouTube series. But the fact that players cannot even properly play or draw cards to a deck they created makes me want to uninstall this game and just look at the artwork on my own time online. Download if you don’t want to take this game seriously. Avoid if you want to have fun.

Unfortunately, feels extremely P2W

I used to play this game a massive amount, and originally it felt like a true skill game where deck building felt like the main point of the game. Unfortunately after returning it just feels like a massive pay to win, with cards being uncraftable unless you buy certain expansions, and in game currency coming by slowly to purchase said expansions. Also, the power requirements in a deck being forced to have 1/3rd power feels extremely restrictive, resulting in multiple turns where your draws are extremely dead considering that your opening hand usually can cover the influence requirements your deck can run. If asked when I originally played this game, I would have recommended it, but with the current state of the game I can not in good faith recommend it to new or returning players, unless they feel like sinking money into a game that on the bare surface is a “free to play”

Error downloading content

Great Game, far better than hearthstone and cheaper too, the game is extremely fair and the best player can usually win if they have a decent deck. The deck building system is intuitive and the cards are mostly balanced. So I would give this game 5/5, however, I have encountered a glitch, the ingame content downloaded has been frozen for a couple of days, it got stuck on 33MB remaining. So I can’t play the game since the last update as the game won’t update itself.

Leider enttäuscht

Hearthstone in grün. Zeitverschwendung, leider.

Just as awful as MTG

Everything depends on card draw. Either you draw too many “sigils” (aka mana) and not enough functional cards, or you draw no sigils and thus cant play any cards. It is so frustrating and dumb. Also the alleged game controller support doesn’t work. And I tried reaching out to the developers about this and received no response whatsoever. Clearly they don’t care whether or not their game works as advertised.

I deleted the game a couple of years ago due to bugs and horrible connection. Reinstalled it to see if they fixed any of it and of course nope. There’s a bug that messes up with how my finger interacts with cards. I have to restart the game over and over until it goes away. This is an eminently f2p game. I have spent some money over the years but I’ve felt it worthy because the game is of great quality. The card pool is deep. The strategies are subtle and varied. Beautiful game and fun but broken

I played magic for a long time in this game was a lot more fun. However, when you have to have 35 to 40 out of 75 cards, all of them are energy just to get two of them to eventually show up in a single draw 20 rounds in a row then there’s something broken in the game. If I could buy these cards and play them in the real world, that would be awesome But their math is broken.

Fun but annoying

This game is great as far as sound effects and visually. The game is fun to play......at first. You’ll like if for a bit online until a certain point then everyone uses the exact same deck which is ridiculous. I’m assuming they spent $ cuz those decks don’t exist normally. But more so they’re are way too many kill cards. It’s a bit ridiculous. I’ve played matches where every card I through was killed by a kill card. The game could use a little nerfing on the kill cards. It’s literally the purple deck the most. Which coincidentally is one of the colors everyone uses online mixed with the rest of their crazy cards. Overall the game is fun but some of the downsides make it less enjoyable. If you read other reviews you’ll see I’m not the only one who thinks these things.

Fantastic, Free, Fun

I am a big fan of Dire Wolf, and a lot of my money has been spent on their products. I’ve even bought all three Clank! versions (if you are unfamiliar with DW’s board games, look them up, they’re amazing!). I bought the Root app, which is widely considered the epitome of physical to digital conversions. And now I’ve downloaded Eternal… but have not paid a dime for it! I’ll no doubt end up buying a campaign at some point, which from what I gather will set me back $10, using real life dollars to purchase in-game currency (gems) to spend in their store. But I’m currently more than half way to earning enough gold within the game as an alternate way of buying a campaign, just from battling for free. I don’t love fighting real humans for some reason, though I have more wins than losses currently, and mostly play the “Gauntlet” - the series of increasingly difficult matches - in an attempt to earn larger and greater prizes. I’d say that the Gauntlet does reveal some of the frustrations common to this sort of online collectible card game, as towards the end, the AI uses not just “Legendary” cards, which from my calculations I would have to spend $29 to reliably obtain, but whole mechanisms that are as yet unavailable to me. But, I do believe that’s what your signing up for when Gauntlet-ing. So far other human players haven’t unleashed unbalanced hurt upon me, which I am thankful for. Regardless, I have to give this 5 stars because of all the enjoyment I’ve gotten, free of charge. Thank you Dire Wolf yet again for all the good times.

My honest take on a great game with a dirty secret...

I played this game for a few years, and I quickly discovered that while free and fascinating...Eternal would probably never be worth spending money on. I so wanted to spend money on the team that put this game together but there is one aspect of th enamel that eventually drove me to delete Eternal after all this time. The way Eternal ‘shuffles’ is @#$&ing horribly unbalanced. I either drown in nothing but power cards or I don’t get any at all. Even in decks designed to draw and play loads of power cards, it never works right. I’m not stupid either having been playing CCGs since the early 1990s, so I know how to work with what I have. I’ve sent numerous feedbacks, just adding my voice to the chorus that does exist online. They don’t seem to care, so I have to say good-bye as I’m tired of a card game driving me to drink. It’s the probabilities of drawing cards the way I do that convinced me the game is rigged beyond the normal amount that happens with PTW games like this. After my Stats & Probabilities class last semester, I was able to derive some useful stats from my games. If you don’t mind spending money or have more patience than I do, by all means, pick up this game...it’s the best card game out there (for iOS) as far as I’m concerned...just too cheaty and rigged for me to keep going. And I don’t feel bad for giving this game a bad rap, I played for years and the devs ignored our reasonable requests for an unbiased card shuffling algorithm. Also, more and more of the game is being hidden behind subtle paywalls...so be ready for that trend to continue. Devs, don’t bother replying, I won’t care and if anyone else actually believes anything you say about this review...you deserve each other. Good-bye Eternal, it was hundreds and hundreds of hours I mostly don’t regret.

Fun But Frustrating

This game is very similar to magic the gathering. Only a small part of the gameplay involves skill, whereas the rest comes down to luck of the draw. A good amount of content has been released, allowing for the creation of unique and fun decks to be used in the solo battle gauntlet (versus the computer.) The ladder format (Throne) is comprised of the same handful of net-decks with tweaks here and there. The changing standard format (Expedition) restricts the use of card expansions to only a few, allowing for a wider array of net-decks with tweaks here and there. The Forge (draft versus computer) and Draft (draft versus people) formats are the healthiest part of this game, allowing for a wide variance of viable deck creation. Overall, this game is fun but it can be very frustrating.

This game really is an improvement in magic, with the mana system being more forgiving and fluid. Game play is fast, challenging and engaging. The easiest way to play league is to do the daily quests, build up coins to play the monthly league for free, a mode that requires both deck building and game play skill as it’s essentially a sealed pack event, where you get additional packs each week. You keep the cards open as well. Supports a wide variety of play styles, great animation. Top notch. Only complaint is the app can bug on load and cards become unresponsive and sometimes connectivity will drop forcing you to leave the app and come back.

It could be so good

I want to like this game. I really do. I’ve played Hearthstone. I’ve played Magic. I didn’t especially like either once I’d gotten to know them. Eternal is one of many digital card games trying to fuse HS and MTG into something greater than the sum of its parts. Unfortunately, it borrows too heavily from each in the wrong areas, whilst adding its own admittedly interesting spin: - It uses exactly the same flawed mana system Magic uses, so you can become “screwed” or “flooded” for power, and drawing nothing but sigils in a topdeck situation is not only infuriating, but can happen even to the best players sometimes, so it takes an entire dimension out of gameplay in those scenarios. - It uses the same combat mechanics as Magic, giving the defender the advantage. This results in board situations where the first player to attack loses, so neither player does until they get a spell to give them board advantage. It’s not especially fun. - Like Magic, it has a large pool of keywords at its disposal, called “Battle Skills”. These include good and unique mechanics like Fate, Echo, Warcry, Revenge and Killer. They also include badly designed mechanics like Double Damage, Charge, Flying, Unblockable and Silence. - Like HS, it has abysmal low tier cards and horribly broken top tier cards, and, like HS, puts those top tier cards at a higher rarity level, so they cost more “shiftstone” to craft, and are less frequent in packs. - Like HS, “shiftstone” is difficult to obtain. Open a pack full of the aforementioned low tier cards, which in my experience happens far too often anyway? Each of those cards is worth 1 shiftstone. One. A non-premium Legendary costs 1600 shiftstone to craft. A good card worth playing costs 800. You can easily see which cards aren’t worth playing because they’re only 50 to craft. Hearthstone might only give you 5 cards per pack, but its duplicates are worth 5 times as much for crafting, which actually makes HS better for crafting cards, in addition to Hearthstone’s fabled “Pity Timer”, which guarantees a Legendary after a number of packs. Plus, with the recent update that guarantees you don’t get duplicate Legendaries, Hearthstone’s packs are actually more likely to give you a card you want to play or build a new deck for. Eternal might be generous with packs, but it’s the stingiest with good cards. Outside of gameplay, its matchmaking isn’t up to par. Maybe the player base is too small, or maybe there’s something wrong with the algorithm, but I seem to consistently get matched up against people with significantly better decks than me. Now, while I consider myself a good card game player, I know I’m far from the best, and I make misplays every now and again, but at no point have I thought myself so good with a starter deck that I warrant being matched against somebody with multiple copies of different legendaries and 4 copies of a card I only just got one of. It’s disheartening to get stomped by somebody simply because their worst cards are better than your best cards. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong. Perhaps I’m not grinding enough. Perhaps I should be “farming” Gauntlet to get more entires into Forge and Draft to get more cards. I don’t know. Grinding isn’t my thing, and it certainly shouldn’t be central to any design. It just screams pay-2-win. What I do know is that in trying to be a combination of Magic and Hearthstone, Eternal simply inherited both system’s flaws, without really building on their strengths in any way. I’ll keep at it for another week or so, see if I can derive some enjoyment out of a card game, because I love the genre, but at the moment it looks like this’ll be another disappointing uninstall.

Finally, a F2P friendly CCG

This game is by far my favorite online CCG. The gameplay is a lot of fun (MTG style combat) and the polish is really good too. (voice acting, animations, sounds, art, etc) and the best part? You don't really need to spend any money to have fun. As long as you aren't playing in the super high and competitive ranks, the meta isn't all that influential. Unlike Legends of Runeterra, you can do stupid stuff in this game and make it work. I’ve built several decks that are a lot of fun and are mostly pretty decent, (some are just memes) and I didn't need to spend a dime to do that. Now, if you play super competitively, you’ll need to make a meta deck and maybe spend some money, but I haven't run into any of that yet. My only major complaint is that the shuffling algorithm sometimes doesn't work all that great. I used to get screwed 2/5 times and flooded another 2/5. That doesn't happen as much now and I can't tell if it’s because of the addition of the plunder mechanic, I got better at building decks, or because they fixed it. This is more of a nitpick, but I wish there was a little more variety in the animations and that some (especially kill cards) were a bit more dramatic. Wouldn't it be cool if units dropped onto the board instead of warping in? (that said, some of the newer spells do have unique animations)

Not free at all

Only the tutorial is free. If you want to do any campaign stuff it cost real money. So much for getting away from blizzard. Horrible business model. I likes this game but you literally can't play anything unless you spend real money. Scam and you should be ashamed

Good ideas, poor resource system.

This has a lot of good ideas within. The art direction is solid and the rewards are generous. The strategy is compelling and the different colours have a lot of differences. Which makes them fun. Issue is the "mana" system. You play your mana cards. Which means you can draw nothing but those cards, or draw none of them. Rendering your entire deck/hand useless as you are unable to do anything. This, for me, along with the limited counters to flying, make this unplayable. Of all the things to copy from Magic The Gathering, the resource system was the dumbest one.

Updates

Loved this game since pc, but some reason whenever a new update is released on iOS the only way I can update is to uninstall and reinstall game,
