Love this App
I love this app! Because I am able to open it anytime. Write my thoughts in or if I am not thinking of anything to stuck in my head. The prompt feature is great. Along with the ability to add pictures also is great. And most of all be able to held accountable by the streaks you create.
Missing 2 months of Journal Entry - No help from app support team
If you have this app I recommend you quickly export your journal so you would not be in the same position. I had the misfortune of losing 2 whole months of daily journal entry. All of the recommended troubleshooting amounted to diddly squats. After going back and forth with the support team and happiness engineer I am still awaiting resolution. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU EXPORT YOUR ENTRIES ASAP ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE THE FREE VERSION. Hoping Dayone resolves the issue and “recover” the missing entries without forcing me to pay $50. Still waiting patiently
Upgrading phone login issue resolved – everything is back.
I upgraded my phone. I tried to log on my new phone. When I logged in my Journal was empty. There’s no way to contact Day One other than an email. No phone support, no chat. Emailing eventually works. Took a little longer than I had hoped for, but I got all my entries back. It was basically more an error on my side and how I logged in. There are two ways to login via Apple ID or username and password. I couldn’t remember which way I had done it and when I logged in with Apple ID, nothing was there. And apparently I tried logging in using username and password too many times and it locked me out. So it was a little scary. But everything is good now. Thanks for your help. I do recommend users exporting your data every once in a while to save us a backup. Also, it would be helpful if Day One had an online chat. If they had a online chat, I would give five stars.
But whyyyy?
So I haven’t journaled in a really long time and decided I would open up this app to start back only to be met with a screen asking for $50 or a yearly subscription. I had a free subscription and I am no longer able to access my earlier entries because I cannot get around the screen asking me for money. Is there a workaround?
VPN required
Overall I love it honestly, everything is very good, BUT the app limits usage in several countries and requires VPN for synchronization to work properly. Like… come on, guys… Are you getting paid for this??
This One I Like!
I’ve been using Day One for a few weeks now and it seems so much easier than trying to write on paper, which I used to love! I like the ability to pop a photo onto today’s date on my calendar. And I just noticed a nice feature that will show me what happened on this day in past years once those dates come around again. So yes, this journal I like and if I can keep using it regularly I may upgrade if it seems worthwhile.
Day One scrubbed me, they :erased all my years of diaries🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

Love this journal app
Have been keeping my journal for years. One less star as the 5 min video cap is a pain. But having flashbacks from years before and a mix of voice notes, pictures, links and writing is brilliant.
Missing Critical Search Within Note Feature
I wish I had learned before committing to this app that it has deliberately, despite consistent user requests, refused to add in a very critical search-within-note feature. This is really sad because it is a solid journaling app. even the free version. I've enjoyed using it quite a bit, but will probably need to leave it because if I can't search within my notes, then why type all of this information into it to begin with?
The iPad DayOne seems buggier than the MacOS version.
Lots of odd hesitations in keyboard entry, not seen on my iMac or my iPhone. Odd glitches in cursor movement. Sometimes I have to quit and restart the app before it’s usable. No problems at all with the Mac version.
User since 2021
I love this app. It feels secure with the password. It’s got all the features I’d ever need. It’s essentially replaced the Notes app on my phone. The search feature is great. I’m neurodivergent and this app has been a great tool for me to just brain dump in an organized fashion. I would love more customization for the journal covers and more colors, it’d be cool to be able to use a photo, but really that’s the only ask.
Last update
2022: A lot of basic text editing features are missing. No text colors, single color for highlighting. It is been a while, but still no fix. 2024: Last update is not an improvement of the look. Huge font, can only see few entries. Please, add an option to get back to an old look. 12/7/2025: After last update, copy/cut/paste functionality is messed up. Cannot select more than 10 lines of text. Practically unusable. 7/28/26 - copy/cut/paste functionality is still not fixed. You can’t copy even a few paragraphs, page starts jumping, text becomes unselected. The only work around is to go by small chunks of text. Very annoying that it is still not fixed. For some reason they never fix reported issues.
Good at what it does
This is probably the most get-out-of-the-way journalling app I’ve used, with one notable exception. They recently added AI features to the app, for a premium subscription, alongside a setting to turn them off. However, turning them off doesn’t hide them from the app, so even if you hate AI there is a chatbot upsell shown to you every time you launch the app with no way to hide it, even if you’re a paying subscriber who doesn’t want the AI tier. But for this, I would love using the app every day, but as it is, I find it kind of annoying and obtrusive.
Loved this app till it glitched
Hey maybe it’s just my phone but everytime I drop a pin in the maps it usually adds the location coordinates but it keeps saving as 0 0 coordinates and not the right location. Please fix! And I’d give it 5 stars but I’ve been using this app for a while and it’s worked amazing until this glitch started happening
It’s ok
Another concern: I’d love to see more variety in the Daily Prompts. Many questions have already been asked before. Refreshing the prompt library would keep journaling feeling fresh. I’ve been using this journal for a couple of years and overall it’s ok. It gets the job done. But as I evaluate the cost per year, I’m taking a second look at other options. There are 3 features that I would love to see: highlights in other colors and not that dreadful gold, text in different colors and the ability to archive of journals. As I’m searching for other journals I found this one to be a bit outdated compared to newer options. Unless they add new valuable features that I need , I probably won’t renew. I’ll selected a different program for a cheaper price that has the features I want.
Help! The last update froze my app
And ive restarted my iphone15pro. Can you release another update to fix please! I dont want to lose 5yrs of journal entries! Update- thank you for the reply from the developer. The app is now working. Im almost at 1000 days of daily journaling. I love how you can export it as text for backup. Love this app!
Disappointed with Day One’s AI Feature Changes
I used to love Day One, but I’m really disappointed with how they handled the AI features. When I upgraded, AI was advertised as one of the premium features. Now, those same AI features have been moved behind an even more expensive subscription tier. Existing paying customers weren’t clearly informed that something they already paid for would require another upgrade. I’m not against companies charging for new features, but taking away or restricting features that were part of the premium experience feels misleading. A little transparency and better communication would have gone a long way. Day One is still a beautiful journaling app, but this change has made me lose trust in the company. I hope they reconsider how they treat their loyal subscribers.
Good app
I use Day One everyday to check in on my thoughts and set the intention for my day. I do not pay for the premium version because I don’t see a positive cost/benefit to do so, if there was a personalized AI coach available, I’d pay for that.
Pay increase
I’ve been using this app since 2018. Today I tried to add a pic to my entry to find out that they’ve more than doubled the subscription price and canceled my subscription with no notice. I do like the app, but going from $25/year to $70/year is quite annoying. Pretty sure when I first got the app it was just $5. At this point I’m over it.
Overcomplicated
In general this is a very useful app. However, as others have said, the latest update overcomplicates things. For instance, the search function is now totally opaque. I used to search for a keyword (e.g. a town name) and it would bring up when this town was mentioned in my journal. Now it brings up a whole load of pointless options about tags and so on. For goodness’ sake - all I want to do is see what days I mentioned this town in my journal, when I might have written some information or thoughts about it! I don’t care whether I tagged it or put it as the location. You’ve made this far too difficult to understand. Please simplify it again. Also, please don’t tell me to contact you about this. Please just fix it - it’s at your end, not mine! Thank you.
Helped me a lot mentally
I love writing journal everyday. Makes my mind clear and helps me improvise.
The best journal app for iOS just got a lot worse.
New UI in the recent update completely loses the focus of being a journal app - too much wasted space and much harder to quickly switch between journals. The new update also adds AI-based chats and journaling, which is fine if that’s how you want to write, but it feels like a big step in the wrong direction for this app.
Dropped a Star or Two
I still think this is a brilliant App but because of recent changes you’ve lost a star from my rating. Whether it is because I have not upgraded to ‘Gold’ standard subscription but why should I need to pay more for what I had? It is no longer very obvious where to find suggestions, as they are no longer an option when creating a new entry with the big ‘+’ as that has had to give room for the AI features available to Gold subscribers. I’ve discovered I now need to select ‘more’ from the ’journals’ screen and select from the quick start section. A bit of help navigating the update would have been helpful as the help guides on DayOne’s website still reflect the old versions functionality. I can only hope that those of us who don’t want AI features continue to see feature improvements for our ‘Silver’ subscriptions.
Very Dissapointed
The last update, despite the Day one Team claiming that nothing has been removed, have removed the step count feature! This is one of the most important parts of the app. The team say they may consider reintegration of this feature at a later date, but you can bet we will all pay for that. I have Gold membership and if a stealthy reduction in features is a thing they think is acceptable to clients I shall find another and cheaper method to run my journal.
Good but bit bloated
Somehow the app has lost the joy of simplicity - started to get bloated with stuff I don’t want or need and functions like the inane chat function in the today view which cannot be hidden even when ai is turned off iPad (mini) app feels like a right mess .. cluttered/cramped/ bad use of space & frankly unpleasant ! Please make it so I can have the simplest clearest UI without ANY clutter.. I want to be in my head reflecting not getting agitated by the app Considering a move to calmer seas
Since 2014
I’ve been using this abs since 2014. It has helped me express myself in a way that wasn’t really available on the phone back when I started using this. There are other apps now, but I have loyalty and come back to this time and time again.
Too expensive
$75 for a digital journal??? And….deleted.
Disappearing app
Constantly disappears and is unavailable for use. Every day lately then I have to fight to find it.
Dayone - what have you done?
My beloved DayOne has broken my heart. The one sanctuary I have each day is now infiltrated with AI. Why? What possible need was there? If people want prompts or to discuss their problems - they can use Claude or ChatGPT. I’ve now lost total trust in the company… who knows how my data is going to be used in the future. After so many years, I won’t be renewing… time to move on to pen and paper I think!
My most-used app
… but it is losing its way. Building in AI that is not exactly being clamoured for, and neglecting basic things such as hierarchical tags, full screen maps, print support for tables (once supported) and so on. Focus on the basics, please Day One.
Best Journal App
Been using Day One for years now across devices and love all its features. I’m an avid journaler so this has been one of the best additions to my routine!
HELP
I been using this app for about four years now. Love it BUT suddenly yesterday it disappeared and when I back to app search and tried to open it. It wouldn’t let me. I have it on my older iPad and it still works fine. Why can’t I get it back on my new iPad? I’ve been using it on it for a number of years already on this iPad.
Good 4 some
It’s very good if you are committed or disciplined to the idea. I am not a regular us but I find it useful to help ground myself and reset especially if I am feeling anxious and want to understand why I shouldn’t be.
Photo upload not working
I’ve been using the free version of this app and uploading a single photo to diary entries since 2021 - the app is now not allowing me to do this and prompting me to buy a subscription? App is perfect otherwise

App is not working today! What is going on?
Faulty on an iPad Pro
I should give it 5 stars as this is one of my favorite apps but something has happened to make it almost unusable. It quits working on a regular basis so I have to use my iPhone and thankfully it saves on the cloud so when it decides to work on my iPad I have everything from my phone. Update as I was contacted by DayOne and all is working fine again.
Deleted my information
The app deleted years of journaling with an update. I’m beyond furious that I’ve lost my written thoughts and memories upon the birth of my daughter
One of my core apps
Day One makes it easy to record dreams, feelings, snippets of perception. The interface is beautifully uncluttered and easy to use—just what you need in waking up. The only issue (hence a missing star) has been with syncing across devices. I'd like to use seamlessly it on my phone as well as my iPad, but abandoned trying after reading up how, which just didn't seem possible without a complex export-import process. If this was made easier, it would be get an extra star. Still, one of my must-have apps, where I regularly keep a huge repository of entries.
Book printing
Have been trying to get journal printed but it’s a nightmare. Have ordered in the past with no problem. Help centre isn’t that helpful. Had this app for years but doubt I will renew. Anyone recommend another app?
iPad
Major issues on my iPad. For the last week it’s been sticking and crashing. I’ve done all of the usual stuff but it continues to cause problems. I’ve removed the app and the iPad now functions perfectly. Is this a known issue? iPhone is absolutely fine.

Whether in text, audio or photo; it is always the right place to share. So easy to adapt into my routine and a terrific reminder of what matters most.
Not Worth the Money
Why bother paying an annual fee for something that Apple provides for free? I’ve used both this and Apple’s free version and I don’t see what I’m paying for. I just wish I could get some of my money back.
Great journaling app could be better with speed control for audio entries
Great app for journaling, just some feedback, please can we have a way to speed up playback for audio recordings. It would be awesome if I could listen back at 2x speed
No More Markdown Support….
It seems that Markdown support in the app, is now completely removed, I’m instead, directed to use the web version. It isn’t even that i can’t paste in markdown ( which I used to previously, and it would be rendered mostly correctly ), I’m prevented from editing the entire entry! I appreciate that the use of markdown isn’t popular, but this used to work. If I wanted to use a web app, I would, but no, I want to use a native app. If DayOne keeps removing functionality, I’ll look elsewhere.

The last time I subscribed to this service, several moons ago, it was £32.99 a year. Now it’s £49.99. When did that happen?

Broken!
I have used this app for over ten years but recently I’ve found it to be almost unusable. It is very slow to respond to my typing and often crashes mid diary entry so I lose everything I have written. I have updated to the latest version and the issues persist. I’m very disappointed and may look into alternative journal apps if this isn’t fixed.

I have stared this app 3 days ago and so far it has ben good but lately i had a few problems about premium and signing in. So, i hope in the future everything will be ok in this app.
Nice app but external calendar entries don’t show…
As above, even when setting the Privacy and Security settings correctly and enabling the relevant calendars in the app, no calendar entries are shown. Shame as I was just about to purchase a subscription. Hope you can fix it soon? When I say external calendar entries, I mean those from Apple Calender and Google Calender, which your app (and site) states that you support integration with… This is happening on 2 different iPads and also an iPhone (all running IOS 18.5) As I originally stated, Calender permissions are set correctly for Day One (Full Access), but still no entries appear in Day One… just investigate the issue and fix it! Update: seems that you fixed it quietly in the background in the latest update. Even so I had to completely remove (uninstall) the app and reinstall it, then set the permissions again, etc. before the Calender entries would show (Google and Apple calendars). Further Update: no the bug is still there, the only way to get the Calender entries from Google and Apple Calendars to show again is to delete the app and re-install it. Due to this I will no longer use this app and have purchased Diarium instead (shame as Day One looked so promising).
Love it, but…
This is a fantastic app for pulling together photos and memories, but... It's quite clumsy to use, and does crash quite often, which is very worrying as I've spent probably 30 hours in total inputting all the material. What if it were to crash and I would lose it all?
