Frequent UI changes and modifications to the original YNAB paradigm of budgeting make this hard to recommend for long term usage. App itself is still barebones after many years of “redesigns”. YNAB the company and its leadership need a reset.

Love the product but…

Been using YNAB for over a year now and it has honestly changed my finances dramatically. It did take a little while to learn but once I understood it, it allowed me to be more thoughtful about my money. I told all my friends because I think it’s that great. However, the app design changes over the last couple months are pretty frustrating. It seems like essentially they are adding extra taps for no perceived benefit. I am for all changes that things more efficient and easy to understand but these are not that. I would urge the developers to go back to earlier design principles of simplicity.

Frustrating update

New update is really frustrating. I can no longer see what I’ve spent in each category without additional work that’s not user friendly. It’s frustrating to see $0 in my plan or available to spend, but I want to see what my spend has been without having to act like I’m assigning funds. This feature being removed will likely make me look for a new product.

Good for Using Your Budget but Not Making It

I love YNAB; I’ve used it for a decade. Unfortunately the app keeps putting form over function and keeps hiding data behind extra taps or UI elements that look pretty in screenshots and demo videos. The only functional way to create a budget or assign out money is by using the web app on desktop instead. Day to day management and transaction logging is still fine on mobile even with the extra taps, but it seems like as the years go by I do less and less on the app and more and more on web, whereas I used to do my budget entirely on my phone.

Best Budgeting App Out There!

When I was looking for a budgeting app/website to replace the old Intuit Mint, I looked at everything out there. Initially I was a little hesitant to give YNAB a try because it was a little overwhelming at first glance! I used some of the video resources available through the app as well as recommendations/walkthroughs available on YouTube and it completely changed my outlook. Since then, YNAB has proven to be the most effective budgeting app I’ve ever encountered and has become an indispensable tool in my life. I highly recommend this app to anyone looking for a reliable budgeting solution.

Need to prioritize current users

YNAB is a great app. If you’re new to it then you should download it and follow the system because it will change your life. That being said, you all need to pay attention to what your current users are asking for. If the user base is split on an issue, then make it a setting they can choose. Offer some customization. For example, we want biweekly targets. I’m not going into the details here as YNAB is well aware that customers want this and the subject has been beat to death on reddit and people (including me) have reached out to them directly. However they’d rather spend their time messing up the experience for people like me who have been using the app for almost 10 years. I’m specifically referring to how we now have to tap the search box to search the categories list when adding a transaction. This is a daily task that users have built into their muscle memory and now you’re changing it? Why? And you’re prioritizing this over the your customer’s requests for major feature upgrades like biweekly targets? It’s fine if some people prefer to scroll rather than search. This brings up another area where YNAB is seriously lacking: customization. This isn’t the first time you’ve messed with the categorization workflow, which would suggest that your users are split on whether they like to search or scroll. Here’s an idea: make it a setting! Give us a choice! Stop trying to force a particular way on me! Another aspect that has degraded over the years is how we add categories and arrange the order they’re shown in the plan. I want my categories to be in order of when the bills are due. We used to be able to view the due dates for targets while reordering and adding categories but now I have to make sure to figure out where a category goes before I go to the screen to add it. Otherwise I have to leave that screen and return to the plan where I end up tapping on the individual categories and tapping “details” to check due dates, carefully figure out where a new category should live, return to the category add screen and tap “reorder” where I finally move it to its home. I guess I just want more customization. As it stands now, if another app were to offer YNAB any competition, I would happily jump ship.

App is great but bank connection is the worst

This app is great. I love it and find very useful. One major drawback is Plaid: the system which it uses to connect to banks. This is the WORST experience. Every 1-1.5 months it loses the connection and requires me to reconnect. Reconnection never works within the same day. It takes me around 1-1.5 weeks to reconnect. Please, YNAB team, do something. If it’s not working properly, I’ll go back to Excel charts because both your app and Excel can’t be connected to banks.

Good UI design, poor back end

Makes the envelope method easy and the integration with account balances is good - when it actually works. Half of the accounts refuse to import transactions despite multiple rounds of re-syncing, removing and reconnecting, and help desk ticket requests across over a year. Not sure if I'll continue using YNAB because this has been so frustrating and severely degrades the utility of the service. For almost $100/yr I expected a more useable app.

Saving more than money

The Ynab system really has given me so much peace of mind, eased anxiety, clarified goals, and help me feel like while I can’t have it all, I have enough. Before my partner and I started using this app, I worried about rent every month. I felt like I was never saving enough, guilty every time I inevitably had to move money from savings to checking. Now, for the first time in my adult life, I know I can pay to get my car fixed or take care of a sick pet without going into debt. Now we can dream of the future in a concrete way— save to move, save to put money towards going back to school, even save to buy a new rug. I have financial security I never imagined I could have with my current limited income. The spending breakdowns and analyses are extremely helpful and intuitive to use and reflect on. I look forward to assigning money each pay day. Some features— like “cost to be me” are less helpful, since many categories I’ve created aren’t ones I use every month. I know for my partner, their banking makes them reconnect their banking more often than mine, and that’s a little annoying but not a deal breaker. When I import transactions directly from my bank, I’ve ended up with duplicates after the automatic imports update. Overall minor issues I will gladly take for the peace of mind Ynabs given me!

Latest update feedback

We’ve been using the app for a few years and finally seeing some light in our budgeting, thank you! In the latest update I’ve been disappointed with the Review Transactions section. As I’m very hands on I like to go in each day to categorize the transactions that have come in. I used to be able to press an X in the memo section to delete the default entry and add my own. Now I need to select it all and delete. Also, I now need to press on ‘show more’ to unclear the transaction so that at the end of the week we can match it against our bank statement (we are in Australia). Previously I just needed to scroll down. These two extra steps just take that bit longer to review a transaction which makes the app a bit clunkier in my opinion. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but thought you might appreciate the feedback.

Recent visual changes obfuscate information

I’ve been using YNAB for 20 years. The last few major updates have made significant changes to the UX. The most recent one has hidden the assigned column and added a little money spent summary to each bucket row. The summaries add clutter and potential for confusion between the bucket’s active and beginning balances. I found the assigned column to be a core information component while reviewing my plan. It reappears if you tap on a row, but there is no option to have it always be shown. Instead the plan is cluttered with folder icons that fill up to green. It’s visual noise that greatly reduces readability. It’s a budgeting app and YNAB continues to find ways to hide the numbers. I feel like I’m being forced out as a user because clean informative presentation has been traded for scrapbook styled presentation.

Much more than a budgeting app

YNAB is the only budgeting app that’s actually changed our financial life. Since 2020, it helped us buy a truck with cash, plan our next car the same way, and stay completely out of debt by turning future expenses into something we plan for instead of falling into unplanned spending. And when we bought our home, YNAB gave us the clarity and confidence to pay extra on our mortgage every month—enough that we’re now years ahead on our payoff timeline and saving a huge amount in interest.

Unwanted new changes

I’ve been using this app for over half a decade now. I loved the balance it struck between simplicity and more complex arrangements like saving for a vacation, etc. I hate several of the new changes. First, the beta testing being done currently where the progress bar has been replaced by circles — get rid of that, no one likes it. I also hate that the option to mark something as cleared is now hidden behind a “see more” button. Your UI designers should try actually using the app in day-to-day life before making changes that make it overall harder to use and a less pleasant experience. I love the premise of YNAB, and so far it has been working well for me, which is why I’ve stuck with it for so long, but if you keep making changes like this, you’re going to lose your established user base & word of mouth — the very things that led to your initial success.

But today’s update changing the bars for each category into a weird folder with a circle around it feels like a turning point to me. Stop making changes with no option to decline them

I don’t care if the team apparently wants to change the entire design and UI philosophy of the app, but having the option to maintain a “Classic” view or similar should at least be an option. The way the budgets look now, the way it hides the budgeted total until you click on the budget line, is horrendous. The little icons on each budget item look busy, and overcomplicate the UI. Why do I want to see “Fully spent” repeated over and over again? Why add so much text to a line when a budget total told me everything I needed to know before? Entirely removing the ability to see your budget lines at-a-glance is absurd. It feels like an overcorrection towards an ideal that no one but the YNAB team themselves wanted to make. It’s not user friendly, it’s dev friendly. I’m capable of rolling with the punches. I’m not one to howl to the heavens when things change. I’m adaptable, and understanding. But 2026 has been an awful year for YNAB updates. All-or-nothing UI updates, no customization to maintain consistency, an entirely useless “Home” page that pushes ads, redundant pages, murdering the design. It feels like kowtowing to a corporate ideal, not ensuring reliable service to users. This is an app that people use frequently throughout their daily lives. It is an app for budgeted finances, something that is stressful at a baseline, especially in the world economy today. You have to understand that an unexpected change to someone’s FINANCES is going to be extremely uncomfortable. This is a very personal thing you’re messing with. Why make bracing, irreversible changes with no recourse or options? It’s adding gasoline to a fire. Rein it in, guys. I’m glad you’re feeling yourselves and feeling confident, but your design team and philosophy is not more important than a feeling of reliability and comfort for your users. No user thinks about or cares about the vision of YNAB Inc. They want a comfortable place to manage their finances without disruption or surprise. Get over yourselves, be humble.
