Pretty good but I wish a few things
Read through this all if you’re looking for an honest review :) I've been using this app for a little over a month now and it’s honestly almost perfect! I’m a 17 year old high schooler in the school band (I play percussion) and the marching season is coming up so I’ve been using this to help me learn how to play my songs and as a way to follow along as I play. The only major downside is how it can't read notations/etc. If there was away to manually input these factors I think that would be very useful. For example: since the app can't read if a note is if a sharp or flat you could just manually put it into the app so that it would know. Or something that I really wish was a thing would be changing the tempo throughout the music piece so when it would play it, it would automatically change it. Something similar to this is how it’s always one time signature. Almost all of my music changes tempo and time signatures throughout the peice so if I want to do just a full run through I really can’t. Also sometimes a tied note plays as two separate notes instead of one, so if there was a way to make a note muted, that would be helpful. What I’ve been doing is doing a screen recording of the song and just piecing it together in CapCut or another editing app which works fine. I’ve searched through many apps and this is so far the closest to what I was looking for and I think this is what I’ll be sticking with unless i find something else.
Greedy for what it does
Been a user since the beginning, suddenly they want yearly or monthly ridiculous subscriptions. For the price ForeScore is way better, what is odd is it won’t restore my subscription that I have had for years, how greedy is that! Been a good run, but will be deleting the app.
Good app for what it does
I would like to be able to edit some things that are not picked up from a PDF scan. Sometimes it will #’s & flats. Would be nice to make small things that are missed at times. I know there are apps out there that will do this but being able to edit just a few mistakes here and there. A loop feature would be great also
Sharps and flats
This app never scans sharps or flaps!
Good but omg stop asking for $$
I just got this and it works great minus the fact that im just trying to practice and every 3 seconds it asks me to do a subscription but like bro i dont have $ im a kid and it takes like 12 steps just to get off if that screen and continue practicing.
Another app ruined by greed
Why ruin a good thing. I’m a long time user and after this last update, this app has become painful to use. I used to open music PDFs from my email directly from the share sheet but now it does not do that. Probably I have to buy a subscription for that feature to work now?
Purchased App Started Asking for a Subscription
I purchased the app from the App Store in 2021 and have used it for years. Today when starting it up, it's no longer allowing me to access my music and is asking for a paid subscription. Is there any way to turn this off? If not, I'd like to request a full refund of the app that I paid for in 2021 if that no longer functions to scan music. Thanks very much.
Much better than expected
Hello, I’ll be honest. I wasn’t expecting a whole lot out of this app based on other ones I’ve tried before. After using for a bit, it was pretty impressed with what it can do. It’s not perfect, and there’s some other features would be cool. I was going to send a note suggesting some new features but I discovered they are already there. Really like the metronome and the count in. Good job guys!
Sync Issues really cripple things
All in all a decent app. But sync issues between devices really is problematic. Has been for a while - just look around on forums and such. To think there is a premium version pushed before basic functionality reasonably works is disheartening - but par for the course with apps now.
Works well for the most part
Takes a little time to learn how to get the most accurate scans. The app decodes some sheet music and ignores complete lines of notes. Now the in app purchases has increased to 9 different payment options for annual but with no description. Also, last update has made the app say it’s sorry to see me go every week I open it.. Please explain why. Only I’m on annual payments already and I’m not leaving. So explain the 9 payment option not just pick one out of all the same description.
Sheet music scanner
Love this app…needs a few tweaks but, overall, it’s great for my needs…and pretty user friendly.
Kicked Off Account
If your sheet music is at anything less than 4K resolution, don’t bother, because this app won’t be able to read it. It’s handy for some basic work, but expect a lot of mistakes. I bought the app years ago, and now they’ve kicked me off my account so they can bill me monthly. I guess there’s no support from them for the people who helped them launch their original service. Now they just want to reach back into our pockets. Despicable.
Great app
Really good for learning a piece to know how it should sound. But it does get some things wrong - doesn’t recognise some rest symbols or tied notes.
Good concept
Poor execution. Only the most simple scores will work when isolating a part.
Hit or miss
When it works, it’s impressive. However, sometimes with perfectly legible sheet music, it is not able to scan the different parts correctly, which can be very frustrating
Bass1
Incredibly helpful.
I can’t get past the subscription screen
I downloaded this app for one reason and one reason only, and it can’t even do what I downloaded it for. I’ve tried so many different apps to read my sheet music. I was hoping this one would work. NOPE. Right when I downloaded it, a free subscription deal got shoved into my face. The only two buttons on there were “accept offer” and “restore”. I didn’t want a subscription, so I did what anyone else would do and I clicked the only other option, but when I did, it said “no subscription found”. I just wanted to see what my music sounded like. You almost had another player until that stupid subscription screen popped up.
Works well
Very useful app and simple to use, my only complaint is that the sound samples are awful and almost painful to listen to. Shame as this spoils the App.
What’s My Move
I scanned a song with 3 voices and 75 measures, then saved it as a .xml file. When I opened it with the Dorico Scoring Software app, it had been converted to 5-voices, with 155 measures. What can I do to improve the Sheet Music Scanner interpretation of the song? When I originally played the song back, there were many sections where the Lyric measures were separated from the Piano and Bass measures. One issue with the piece I was scanning is that the first line is only the Treble and Bass lines of music, as it is the introduction without lyrics.
Pretty good but makes mistakes often
I use this app to learn choir music and while it’s pretty good, it makes mistakes on notes and rhythms fairly often. For example, I am working on a piece right now and it keeps reading obvious Eb’s as E naturals, which is huge problem. Because of this my practicing is way less efficient and I’m having to stop and play stuff by hand. I feel like I can’t fully trust it. It would be great to have a feature that allowed me to manually correct mistakes.
Does the trick and more!
I’m a terrible sight reader, and can barely get my way through a Mel Bay book. This app is perfect for me, as I can snap a photo and get a “flight plan” as I work through a piece. I haven’t tested this app with a complicated piece, or handwritten notation, but for printed music and .pdf it’s great. I love being able to share a file right from the playback. Thanks for this useful tool!
Not free to use
Free to download, but not free to use. Need a subscription to use this app.
Very good app for free!
I wish I could also do drum kit notation with this. It would have been 5 stars from me if it could.Great app though considering that it’s free!
Not great
It got most of the notes but not all It paused in places and put too many beats in the bar The transpose function doesn’t work accurately enough -it can’t read double sharps
Good, but needs a fix
When I open the app, sometimes the subscription ad will not have an X button, basically forcing a subscription. Very good, though
Great way to use pdfs
Enjoying Sheet Music Scanner for our a cappella group
Bro
I paid 5 dollars for this app initially. Over the course of 2 years, everything was perfect; it was all free, and even though it crashes sometimes, it was free. Now I have to pay an expensive subscription just to use it. What the hell. This is probably the worst glow down EVER for an app, why are they monetizing ts?? I PAID MONEY FOR THIS AND IT WANTS MORE?!
Subscription based now?- EDIT
I could have sworn I brought this and now they’re making customers pay? Desperate attempt to make money… EDIT: I have spoken with David and he’s a really genuine person, he had apparently tried to make it so that old paid users could continue to use the app but it didn’t work for everyone, he seems to have fixed the issue with the app receipt hence forth I’m changing this review to four stars.
Innacurate
This is a great idea- scan in sheet music and play it back, so you can hear it as well as see it. I’d hoped it would be helpful for practising my orchestral music. I tried it, but sadly it was far too innacurate to be useful. Rhythms were wrong in places, and sometimes several notes were just skipped, for example it would jump in the middle of a run of semiquavers, missing out several altogether. Not helpful if you need to play all of them in the right order at the right time.
Difficult to use
I like the app for reviewing my sheet music, but getting the music ito the all and correctly paginated is a bear! I haven’t found a way to re-order the pages. And
Must have for college students in music classes!
I use this app daily. I find it so easy to upload my files and practice. As someone in multiple choirs, I have a LOT of music to learn per semester, and this app makes it so easy to listen to problem parts. 10/10 would recommend!
Jumped back and forth between rows of staff
I took photos of different pieces of music, and never could get it to work correctly. Also providing only six days off a free trial, and then immediately charging you, I don’t like that model.
Very good
Does what it claims, great app to have in your pocket.
No free version
It sounded great in paper which would be enough to guess it costs money. It’s a subscription and if you use the free trial of no more than six days! You pay extra after all deals wear off.
Feature Request
Please make measures or groups of measures repeatable. That makes it so much easier to practice. I can’t believe this wasn’t a feature when I downloaded it. Works well but am disappointed. Please consider implementing this!
Awesome
Love the app. Get it.
This sucks
Whenever I take a picture of music I can’t find online it can’t even tell when it is looking at music and can only see/read/play a few notes and dosent acknowledge the rest of the piece overall bad don’t spend your money on this
Useful App
This is a useful app, particularly if you’re learning an instrument and you want to hear what those exercises and small pieces you’re practicing sound like. Not all apps are perfect and there are couple of things that would make this a 5 star app. Firstly when the score you’re following has chords not all of the notes are played (even in two note chords). Secondly it would be a nice feature to add a count-in before playback for those like me who want to play along. I learn so much playing along than just listening and trying to play after hearing it. A tip for those people who have a problem taking a photo through the app of a score: scan the score rather than photograph, and save it as a pdf, then import it into the app and save it there. Yep, pretty good app and would be better with the added count-in and fixing the chords.
Disappointed
Disappointed after reading so many glowing reviews. I’m using an iPad to scan sheet music and then export .xml file to Noteflight. There are so many random time changes - 4/4 becomes 8/8 or even 7/8 then sometimes a single line becomes 2 voices for a couple of bars. Correcting all the errors means that it would have been quicker to type it all in myself. Maybe I’ll try using a scanner?
Music reader
Meh it was okay.. not the nest music reader had some missed notes etc. I highly recommend the free trial before purchasing
Works better than expected
I downloaded this to help my daughter practice her piano music, it plays the music exactly and shows you where you are on the sheet… really amazing tool.
Waste of time
The app is so laggy and unresponsive that I could not capture an image of the sheet music.
Great, some difficulties
Overall fantastic app and does most of what I expect One problem I’m facing is that when a key signature change occurs with both naturals in place for the previous key and then the key signature in place in the same bar, the audio does not register the new key. I would appreciate if this was fixed and perhaps if it’s possible to tweak the music in case any inaccuracies occur or we want to make edits to the sheet. There is also something strange happening with pauses at the end of certain bars sometimes. I also would like the option to adjust the volumes of the voices involved instead of just having 2 options of everything playing or only one part playing. I really like how the notes are highlighted as audio plays and that we can change the tempo at any time whilst playing. Thanks for this great tool
Needs improvement
Key features like rest, slurs & ties, cresc & dim, and volume levels aren’t even recognized. Just plays the notes like a robot.
signed me up for an annual membership?
i don't remember ever selecting a membership, and whenever i choose a free trial i always cancel immediately. now, i have spent £22.99 on a year of an app i won't use :(((((((((
I never write reviews
This is seriously such a game changing app. I’m in an a cappella group and am not so well versed in playing the piano. This app has been so helpful in plucking out my part! If you are hesitating to spend the $5, please just buy it, it’s worth it. My sister also has the premium version where you can have more features but I haven’t needed it.
Worst app ever
I wasn’t told that you have to pay for a monthly subscription. Would rate 0/10 not even good or helpful.
Good but not great
Only can play tunes in C major doesn’t recognise key, it’s a shame as it’s perfect for learning new tunes ( only in C )
Needs improvement
It can’t seem to recognize time signatures and there seems to be a delay when it moves from bar to bar. Could definitely use a little more innovation… especially when they’re charging for the app.
Doesn’t like hand written scores.
Writing down folk music or composing your own music and then using the scan section to review failed. Your notation has to be exact and really black. Will also not read old music scores. The scan reader isn't consistent if it misses notes and you try to scan again it misses different notes. So my conclusion is that it is fine when you have printed scores in front of you but not much use if you create.
