Nice app
Really helps me with intonation and tone! It sometimes has problems recognizing notes and rhythms lol. That might just be my photography problem too lol. But it’s a good app!
Not as advertised
Pretty bummed out I paid for a prescription for this trying to isolate alto parts for choir music and all that play is tenor and base even though I’ve selected the correct note orientation.
Pretty good!
I scanned my music sheet and it should me the exact thing as it should. Although I cannot figure out how to load two pages up there, but that’s also probably cause I did not read the instructions. Also, I don’t know if you can, but I wish there was the satin pedal you could like put into it. But overall amazing
Annoying
Like i get that this app is a good idea but bro it is far too difficult to take a picture and line up the music. even when i line it up as best as i can, the reader skips lines, plays random, does that play at all and just sucks
Help feature is bare bones
Sometimes the play score skips notes. The help feature is bare bones. I wanted to find out how to turn off the editing icon on the side of the document because it interferes with my scroll bar, but the help feature was so minimal that I could not find out if it was possible to do that.
Great App for Diatonic Sheet Music
I had difficulty with the app at first, but the PlayScore developer team was quick to lend a hand. I did have difficulty scanning examples from Persichetti's Twentieth Century Harmony and Piston's Counterpoint, but the difficulty stemmed from: (1) The scans must be completely straight, in focus, and not distorted. My difficulty here was due to these books being hardbound and the pages hard to completely flatten. (2) I didn't know this, but the error correction assumes the music is diatonic. Persichetti's book is not at all about diatonic music. So, the developers suggested turning off error correction if the results were not correct. That worked. Mentioning these in case others have these issues. All in all, the app does exactly as advertised.
Dropping an angry cat on the piano would work better
This is a scam. I was double charged after being told the “Professional” would work because the “Productivity” was so useless. Now I’m being charged subscriptions for both versions simultaneously. Neither of them work. You’d get the same functionality by dropping an angry cat on a piano. It’s especially bad for choral or vocal sheet music, and breaks down completely if you have multiple staves. I’ve submitted a scam report to Apple.
It’s okay overall.
The ability to do many things in the app is amazing, but sometimes the ai doesn’t read the music correctly, has blanks in the audio playing, and the tempo selector/changer is on an odd slide bar instead of letting you manually pick the tempo, which makes it hard to input your desired bpm. If the tempo thing changed, that’d make the app much better.
Bad playback
It plays all the lines on a page simultaneously, as if it's a score. To hear a single line, you have to manually mute all other lines. Also plays incorrect rhythms if triplets are too close to or within 16th runs.
Split staffs are great, timing isn’t
I absolutely love the features that allow me to split the parts so I can record SATB notes separately. Unfortunately, I’ve experienced several glitches where the timing of the piece is off, and I don’t have time or skill to adjust the sheet music so it would work.
Yay
Very good
Horrible
Buns
laughed
ok to start off, genuinely sorry bout my last review.... it was a skill issue not an app issue.....🤦♀️. any way it is pretty great for getting the feel if a sheet. there are a few mess ups in each piece tho but its fine bc you know nothings perfect. to be honest tho i was kinda chuckling so hard last time i used it because it was playing one of my pieces and it was supposed to play an a.... it played the note but shot up like four octaves😂😂😂 i was genuinely dying laughing. but yea its really great!!😊 yet again sorry about my last review 😚😚
Needs work on rhythms
I tried using this to read my music and its good on notes but the rhythms need work. Inconsistent tempo and i think its based on what notes line up with a line moving at a constant speed Also since this doesn’t support imports without subscriptions for whatever reason, BE CAREFUL with uploading images from your computer. If you aren’t careful it will get them COMPLETELY wrong.
Hi
so it’s good for every instrument but percussion (unless your playing mallets ofc) it’s good for rhythms but certain songs are written differently and it won’t help with anything
very solid!
the app does a wonderful job of reading notes and rhythms, but i play an instrument which isn’t in c, so the music i read never is able to be transposed. the app says it can transpose, but the feature is grayed out and doesnt function, and also isnt listed as a paid feature. besides that one issue, this almost entirely free app is a wonderful program
Terrible
Scanner misreads constantly and you have to pay to import a photo.
Wow Amazing Tool
It works pretty well and it allows me to practice at home!
Doesn’t do Jazz!!!
I just started using this program and I can’t do jazz or jazz fonts or any kind of instrument that isn’t in concert pitch, very bad!!!
Needs more acuracy
Its good, It just keeps making major to minor and it cant event read STANDARD TIME SIGNATURE like how, its a C, it indicates 4/4
Super helpful with great customer service!
I’m a music teacher and needed an accompaniment part played for my choir. Most played fine but one wasn’t quite right. I sent it to them and they fixed it and sent it back!
Bad
I scanned the paper to stuff and it doesn’t even give the right rhythm or beat. This app sucks.
LIFESAVER!!!!
I just found out about this app this morning, and already I’ve uploaded all our upcoming concert music and have squealed in delight several times. I am just sad I didn’t know about it sooner! As a choir director without a full-time accompanist, this is going to save me and my students! So often I feel like I’m holding them back with my own piano skills, and I can’t listen as well when I’ll concentrating on playing anyway. All that said, there see 2 things that would make this an actual miracle app: 1) the ability to set tempo changes and/or respond to written tempo changes, and 2) the ability to set repeats to a certain number, or insert your own repeat signs. Since I’ve only been using it for a few hours I’ll joyfully edit my review if those things actually do exist and I just missed them. But wow…I’ll impressed regardless! An absolute game changer for rehearsal
Not great
I took a picture of my music and I already knew what it sounded like. I just wanted to remember the word them and it did not. It did not play it right once they are disappointed I thought this app would being so much better.
Skips Measures / Whole Song Sections
Good evening. I just purchased this yesterday and so far it has been skipping measures in pdf files. These are not scanned documents, but high quality pdf’s from my music document files or from another website. This has happened on a number of pdf’s. I have checked out your troubleshooting page. Nothing seems to be working.
Fantastic Tool!
I am a pretty advanced musician and I have a lot of degrees in music, but I don’t play the piano very well, so this app has been a game changer when learning new choral music for the advanced community choir I’m in. I love the ability to change tempi, to highlight one on one part, and the ability to bracket a bar or two that you need to work on. The only thing it doesn’t handle well is unmetered music. I’m also a choir director in the Russian Orthodox Church and we sing a lot of unmetered music. I have tried to use this app to help my singers learn their parts but it doesn’t do a great job handling our typically unmetered music—which is to be expected—since Sibelius also can’t import/read unmetered music well! It’s not a problem, we just learn it the old fashioned way :) For metered music, I screen record PlayScore’s reading of the score and share it with my choir members, who have found it very helpful! Love this app! Great job! Bravi!
Accuracy problems
After scanning the same sheet of music in multiples ways, lights, and backgrounds this system is just not accurate enough yet especially not being able to edit it or see where and what the incorrect notes even are.
Great
Great app! It helps me memorize what the song sounds like so I can play better! The only problem it that sometimes it doesn’t read dynamics, codas, and adds or takes away notes.
Melodic dictation - sometimes
This is a potentially wonderful yet frustratingly unreliable tool. When it plays back the right pitches (for the key) and the correct rhythm it is wonderful for practicing melodic dictation! Sometimes it randomly plays the wrong key and/or wrong rhythm. To make this useful you need a partner to check the recording for accuracy before trying dictation, argh.
I don’t know any musician who reads music in HRZ. Is -1 a whole step down.

First shot at PlayScore 2
This is a first shot at it. I’ve not worked with software like this before. First thing I screwed up was not taking advantage of the free trial. I’m also unfamiliar with some of the terms used so I went with the one month lower priced software only to find that it would not import existing files. I had to pay for the upgrade but instead of charging me the additional dollar or two it charged me the full price. I’ll try to sort that out with customer service. Once I get the logistics sorted out, I think I’m gonna be happy with it. It opens up all the sheet music, some 10,000 pieces of music that it allows me to explore. I couldn’t be happy with the software one year later. This thing has options on it I have not explored yet. It’s well the money.
Just trash
Okay so I got it to help me read my music, and it played some random notes that weren’t written. There were 8th notes and it read it as a triplet. Anyways, it did not help me at all, and just wasted my time
An app I love to hate
I have been using PlayScore 2 for 3 1/2 years on over 1,000 scores, so I am very experienced with what it does well and where it performs poorly. Having tried many other music recognition programs, it is the best over all. What it does well. PlayScore 2 can digitize either PDF scores or photos of sheet music. In general, the app does well even on pages photographed from a book, with distorted edges. It encodes multiple staffs, multiple voices, grace notes, slurs, crescendos, de crescendos, accent marks, etc. What it does poorly. PlayScore 2 does a horrible job on text. It’s not that it gets a lot of words wrong. It just doesn’t encode them correctly in the generated music xml files. So, the title is about where the title should be, but it’s only encoded as text rather than the title. Likewise for lyrics and nearly every other text element. Fixing all the errors of textual encoding takes longer than typing in the text on a keyboard, so I never use the ocr function, which is an option but not selected by default (probably for good reason). Play Score2 runs into significant problems when guitar chord symbols are located close to the upper staff. Such symbols are often interpreted as being actual notes, resulting in random notes being encoded in random voices, often messing up the voices used for actual notes. Other consistent errors: Double bar lines are always encoded as ending bar lines. When measures switch from two voices to one voice PlayScore encodes the single voice as voice 2 (should be voice 1). Volta brackets (repeats) are always encoded on both the voice staff and music staff, when they should only occur above the voice staff The secondary volta bracket is always open, even when the score shows it as closed. Paranthetical flats, sharps and naturals are never included in a score, even when marked in the orignal. PlayScore personnel do respond to requests and bug fix suggestions (although with some arguing). However, they did fix the single slashed grace note error that used to happen. Since I have been using the program for many years, I have re-recognized some of the early scores, producing increased accuracy in later versions of the app, so they do work to improve it on a regular basis.
Not another subscription model
I have another notation programme but as this came as a recommended companion for Dorico decided to give it a go. Unfortunately it made a complete mess of an unmetered flute and piano score. In fact after exporting the xml file and editing in Dorico it was quicker to notate from scratch rather than editing what PlayScore had achieved. In conclusion if the score is reasonably straightforward then I can see it being of some value particularly if you require playback rather than just notation however, the big no no for me is making this subscription only so poor value in my opinion. Think I’ll stick with Neuratron’s PhotoScore. Was refunded for this purchase so was too late to test its ability with unmetered scores after I was reminded by the developers that it has a specific setting in this case.
Needs a tweak
This app is pretty good and getting better. They need to include percussion instruments for playback too. There isn’t even one.
Easy to use . Music inalpha order
Love it
Requires pristine sheet music
I have many .pdf music scores. However, after paying for the app, I discovered that my files are not high enough quality to use. They do not properly play back…only a random note. Also, to import a photo, you cannot lay sheet music horizontal, as on a table. You have to hold it vertically. Awkward. You need to know this about pdf’s and/or using a photo taken from another screen (from their troubleshooting file): If results are poor, the problem us usually something to do with the image. For music captured with the camera see Camera help above Screenshots and especially direct photos of another screen will give poor results. Use the original paper music or of PDF score Some PDF scores are too low resolution or poor quality for optical recognition. Most music can be obtained in full resolution. This includes virtually all commercially published music. See Creating a Playable PDF above JPG images must be high resolution. If a JPG is less than 1.5 Megabytes it is probably low resolution Scans should be made at 300DPI. Scans below 300DPI may lack sufficient detail. We don’t recommend scanning at a higher DPI than 300
Great app but needs some improvements/finer tuning.
Downloaded the free version and it’s great for most music. I’m a pianist (exams to G5, but personal/uni study beyond that) and have been using the app as a way to revisit old songs I used to play many years ago, as well as listening to see if new manuscripts work well or are interesting and testing some of my writing. I have found that certain elements aren’t picked up, though: Trill details, very low or very high notation, Ralentando/Rit., phrasing/volume etc. It also seems to struggle if there’s any pencil marks or handwritten annotations, too, which is disappointing. I cherish my older manuscripts as they have my piano tutor’s personal notes and adjustments, which are very important to me. I wouldn’t ever want to remove/erase them, but the app struggles to read through them. I’d have to purchase a new book/sheet music to record pieces I already own. The concept is brilliant and perfect for most usage, but for the details and personal touches it leaves the perfectionist players among us wanting. I’ll definitely be keeping and using the app in the hopes there may be future updates to tackle these issues. Overall it is a great piece of tech. As with any piano or other instrument: It just needs some fine tuning!
Not very good
It it cannot read my notes. It’s very annoying and now I can’t read the notes to know what’s correct and incorrect.
Not really good
It really only worked once, most pictures were undetectable
i hate it so much
i hate it
Sucks
This app really sucks little annoyed I payed for it
Response to developers response
I have tried to adjust the transposition but for some reason it isn’t allowing me to, do you have any suggestions?
not my favourite
for me it could not read multi lined songs
Intermittent
Unfortunately, I found that when translating from PDF files, this app decides to miss random notes, and in one case a while line was totally skipped for no apparent reason, even though the PDF files were pristine. I'm a choir member with very limited sight-reading skill, and had hoped this was going to live up to all the hype, but I have been sadly disappointed, and am pleased I only took out a month's subscription to try it out.
A great app!
PlayScore makes scanning music easy! The results are clear and any edits or redos are quick. It will save you hours of time. Highly recommended!
This app is a nightmare…
If you’re looking to play music, don’t download this app. When you want to take pictures or download a PDF it will not work or read it correctly. The app needs to be fixed either with reading the music.
Great when it works
When it works it is fab! I tend to use scans rather than photographing the music as that is more accurate but still not perfect. It sometimes misses ties or plays two lines together. I have just subscribed to my second year so will persevere.
Orchestral scans doesn’t work
$9.99 a month for the scans to not be remotely accurate to what im scanning is disappointing. When i import an xml file into dorico its not even close to accurate.
Lots of bugs
It’s great it reads music from pdfs and photos etc but the reading is inaccurate. It ignores repetition, adds in some wrong notes, wrong rhythms here and there. So it’s just good enough to roughly get the melody really..
