You're Losing My Interest When You Want Me Spell

I'm trying to hear and speak the language. Certainly seeing the words and phrases helps with that, but asking me to answer with written and correctly spelled responses is not. If I decide it's important to write in French at some point then I'll focus on it. Right now it is very very unhelpful.

Good lessons, but not enough at C1 level

I bought Babbel on the recommendation of The New York Times wire cutter to improve my Spanish. I tested my level when I first started Babbel and it said I was at a C1 level in Spanish. I was very happy and had lessons for me at my level, but I ran out of lessons within a week. I paid for a year so, as you might imagine, that was very disappointing for me.

Babbel please read this

I’ve been using this app for my Spanish and it’s really good but I would like a few things fixed. First thing I want to clarify is the pronunciation. The pronunciation clarity is not very good and even though I turn up the volume, the words are not very clear and especially with the Spanish alphabet course a lot of the words sounds similar, so I tried to turn up the volume, but it’s still not clear so please fix this! A lot of the dialogue practice and speaking practice has very similar problems so please fix this throughout all of the Babbel courses. Also please let us update the “ Your Vocabulary” list cause I constantly have to add more words into some of my lists I made but scrolling through all of my vocabulary and select a bunch of words. Why not a plus button! Last but not least; Please please make a unit test and longer dialogues for Guided practice because it’s so short and it doesn’t really have a lot of scenarios if you know what I mean.😭 Thank you for reading this!

Awful subscription

I had to sign up for a free trial to “test” out the app, which I didn’t notice automatically enrolls you in a year if you don’t cancel in 7 days. I didn’t love the app and forgot to cancel my trial and now I’m both out $108 and stuck with an app that is not really helping me with my journey to learn a language. Don’t be like me and don’t forget to cancel your subscription.

Way better than Duolingo 🧡

I went resorted to this app because I’m doing French this year at my school, and i wanted to do at least 2 lessons each day. I did a beginners lesson and it really refreshed me with the basics of French. I wanted to do another one but I have to pay subscription for another lesson. I’m just wondering if I can still use this app without a subscription. Otherwise, it’s simple, understanding, and doesn’t constantly send notifications. There’s also no ads in my face like most language apps have. It’s also not competitive like Duolingo since ur forced to be in a league in Duolingo. It’s mainly not about learning on Duolingo. It’s about who’s first in the league and who has the longest streak. Babbel doesn’t have leagues or in game currency to keep you addicted. So you get to go at ur own pace. Great app

App has ruined French for me

I wanna start off by saying that I think this app is much better than other language learning apps because it's not so gamified. However, I have realized that by using this app, I now see learning a second language as an obligation, and I see it as being a burden rather than something that I actually want to do. The constant notifications and the whole concept of a streak makes it feel like you have to do it, whereas I think that learning a language should be something you see as fun and enjoyable. The other thing I will say is that if you were learning French outside of France or Belgium, a lot of the vocabulary in here will not make sense native speakers in your country. I am from Quebec Canada, and there are certain words or expressions that I was taught in this app that would never be used here. I've used words or expressions that I learned on the app only to receive blank stares.

Occasional errors or contradictions, not enough review

I like the Ap, but I wish it administered a test first to know where to start, instead of making everyone start from the beginning. Each lesson should allow the user to test out. There are some occasional errors; like counting your answer incorrect but giving your answer as the correct answer; or asking for a word they haven’t gone over yet. As the lessons progress, there are more instances where they ask questions about materials they haven’t given out yet. So far, I’ve encountered 2 times where an instruction was given. Then, a question was asked about that information. They count the correct answer (according to the instructions) wrong. I wish there was an easier way to go back and forth within a lesson. You have to close the lesson, reopen, and select not to resume in order to go back one page. And then it starts the entire lesson over. You never know when the speaker is going to be using Latin America Spanish or Castilliano. Native speakers use one or the other, but don’t tell you beforehand which. This course is a “memorize dialogue” course; so you have to hope what you’re learning is going to match up with a real conversation. It’s not like Pimsleur that makes you form your own sentences. I do really like the thorough coverage of the plural informal “You” verb conjugations. I’ve taken 3 years of Spanish and a total immersion class in Mexico and all of them neglected to teach those verbs. I like that the words/phrases are captions to pictures. That way you can recall a picture associated with words and you get a better concept of the meanings. I like the pop up explanations. They are very easy to understand instruction. And I like it that the pop ups distinguish between the Spanish dialects ( just wish they’d let you know which dialect the native speakers were using.) And I’m liking the review and getting congratulated for knowing the info. I don’t know how many wrong answers it would take for the Ap to say I wasn’t doing well. In conclusion, I wouldn’t depend on this course alone to make me fluent in Spanish or any other language. If you’re serious about wanting to learn; then, you’ll want to include several different courses, listen to Spanish radio and television, and hang around with native speakers. This Ap is a good start, but get DuoLingo and Pimsleur, too.

It’s magnificent! 15/10!

Babbel is an incredible app! It has several ways for you to learn the language, and doing so really allows you to practice it. There are multiple simple questions for you to match the translation to the picture, spell out the words, speak them into the microphone, practice grammar, and even learn fun facts! The lessons guided me not to just learn French, but how to *speak* it as if I was going to speak French in France or Quebec. It’s so fantastic! Thank you so much Babbel! You are all so amazing!! :D

Better than the others but

This program does a better job of presenting grammar than the other programs I have tried. It however, does a lousy job of actually teaching it. Their teaching recordings blur words together and lack good phonetics. They also create misunderstoods when they use new words in phrases but the translation does not match the order nor what the words actually mean. You then have to go look up the new words. This is a unnecessary waste of time. They are deliberately creating mis-understoods. When you then attempt to speak using your vocabulary your word order is wrong. Why do they persist in giving English translations of phrases that do not match the Spanish words being spoken?

Almost perfect

I think Babbel is spot on with the way it explains grammar and gives a mixed approach of learning new words and so on. Plus, it doesn’t seem to be entirely AI dominated (thank goodness). My only problem is with the revision - I often feel like I want to go over stuff already covered a few times before moving forward with the next lesson, but the revision aspect of the app just throws seemingly random phrases at you and if you get them wrong, I’m not sure if there’s an effective way to revise them (je veux fait les répétitions!) still worthwhile, but the revision aspect is currently a bit dull and feels unfocused.
