My fav Japanese dictionary app
I tried 5 different Japanese dictionary apps before settling on Yomiwa. The interface, functionality, and the fact that it’s free made it a clear winner. I also discovered recently that the developer is incredibly responsive to bug fixes and suggestions!!! Literally they pushed out a requested update in less than 24 hours . You guys are the best!!
The camera feature is not very useful comparing to Goggle Translate.
I payed 39$ for the full version so I could use the camera feature to translate symbols during my trip in Japan. The app could not provide any good translation of sentences which is basically useless. I just deleted the app and switched to Google Translate which works perfectly and it’s free.
Awesome - used for manga and dictionary
I use it to scan a manga page with its OCR function quite a bit. It sometimes has an issue if the manga has the small hiragana for Kanji, but you just need to be creative with the apps capture box to try to cut off that text. In general it works well for vertical text manga. The dictionary is wonderful.
Its getting clunky
Compared to the first time i use it, its getting clunky and live translation through camera triggers the app to close down more often

Great for translating
I am using this to learn about Japanese by changing my console language to it. This is far better than Google Translate. I just need to learn the apps potential too many features I haven’t even used yet
Advertised scanning feature is not available in free version
I think the way things are being promoted here are intransparent and misleading. It should be clearly noted what features are present in the free version and what part of a subscription. It is of course fine to charge for such functionality, but in my opinion the concept of having to pay continuously is not acceptable.
Perfect but expensive
I love the OCR for reading Japanese books and translating unknown kanji to hiragana to understand how it’s read and what it means. But oh mah gad the price $30 (¥4,500) stings. Also one suggestion for readability is to make the flash card kanji font bigger.
Text camera recognition doesn’t work well
I was hoping the text camera recognition would work well but it doesn’t seem to handle the character recognition well for different types of Japanese text layouts (vertical in manga is parsed oddly, also sometimes groups characters from multiple lines of text as if they are one line). I requested a refund as it was the primary reason I purchased and doesn’t work well
Quitting when selecting
Love the app but both the iPhone AND iPad version now quit whenever I select the words to add. Please fix asap. Used it for years and this is first time this has happened. Please fix and I’ll improve the rating to its deserved five-stars.
Excellent App and Supportive Developer!
I have many Japanese apps but Yomiwa is the one I use every single day. I use it for my kanji study (and I highly recommend the Outlier kanji dictionary add on) and as an excellent dictionary when reading. All of the features have worked very well for me — especially Lists and Text Analyzer. I use Lists to keep track of groups of kanji I am currently studying as well as for fast and easy review of past groups. I also give top marks and thanks to Yomiwa’s developer — who is very responsive! Recently something went wrong and I lost all of my lists on my iPhone but not on my iPad. Try as I might I couldn’t restore the lists on my iPhone. I reached out to the developer who got back to me right away, took the time to review my backup files to figure out what had caused the issue and successfully resolve it for me. Yomiwa is absolutely the very best app with an incredible developer.
Crashes daily
This app crashes so much. I attempted to back up my data and it crashed. Not it can’t even get past the logo without crashing.
Favorite
My favorite Japanese dictionary on iOS. Love the bundled ocr and the browser. The flashcards are convenient- pretty easy to export. Only possible improvement would be direct anki flashcard generation, but I understand it’s an unrealistic ask. Definitely a keeper. Update: lately it’s been crashing a lot. Have to make sure to delete my lookup history constantly
Slide over mode is broken.
Title. When use in slide over mode, content in app remain in full screen resolution and translate text did not fit in app borders.
Sync between devices not working
When I start the app my lists have changed with random kanji from other lists and I have to delete them. Please fix this.
The most complete Japanese dictionary
This app is truly incredible. It has helped me tremendously in my studies of Japanese. It has so many features, too many to list here. I’ve used it for many years now! Absolutely recommend it!

Yomiwa is a good tool to learn Japanese
I use Yomiwa to learn vocabulary from Japanese YouTube videos and articles from Japanese websites. The only downside for this app is that it froze often.
Buggy
When I try to translate a kanji in a photo the app immediately crashes.

Clunky and unpolished
While useful, the app feels pretty clunky and unpolished. The image translation tool clearly misses quite a few hiragana/kanji, and I can’t find an option to translate from right to left instead of left to right. Viewing inside of the image is also incredibly messy & hard to garner information from. Overall, it helps you get the meaning, but the ease of use on this app is lacking. Wouldn’t want to pay $9 to have to deal with that.
Good but recognition is just not there
I love a lot about this app and bought the $30 premium almost right away. Feature-wise it has pretty much everything you’d want, including a monolingual Japanese dictionary, which many apps do not offer. But the OCR just isn’t good enough to be practical. The interface is awkward but, more importantly, it fails to recognize too many characters, even if the image is a flawless scan. If the image is a book, the page has marks, etc., it struggles even more. Then you end up resorting to the handwriting recognition and it turns out that is somewhat flawed too. Google Lens, or the Nihongo app (which uses the Google Lens API) does much better with OCR. Shirabe Jisho has better handwriting recognition (as does my good old-fashioned Casio EX Word). I don’t use this app very often because it is so outclassed by alternatives in these key time saving features.
Using this for years
This dictionary makes looking up words and kanji easy. I usually use the skip method for kanji. I can type in English and it translates to Japanese or type in Japanese and it translates to English. Only weakness is when I don’t know if the sound is a long O or if a pause in the word, the dictionary is unforgiving.
Upgraded a year ago and now I have to pay again
God why does my review keep being deleted. I payed $13 ONE YEAR AGO (I have the receipt) so I could use this app ocr. Now the app ignores I did the purchase, and now asks for another purchase ($17 now!) so I can keep using the ocr feature I originally paid for! It's dumb, it's scummy and if I could, I would take my money back. So beware. Do NOT support devs that ignore past purchases (which were made A YEAR AGO). They may come with another update that might ignore your “pro” purchase in a year from now...
error in study list feature
This app is mostly great but I’ve recently had trouble with the list feature, which I use to create flash card learning sets. It has been randomly replacing the words of newly created sets with words of different sets, meaning I’ve been loosing many of the words I have saved and the titles of many sets no longer match their content. It has happened several times now and I don’t think I can continue using the app while this is an issue, as it’s my main way of recording and studying vocab
Not worth the money
When compared to free Google translate I found this app performed worse when translating signs - it just gave translation of each word without capturing the whole phrase or meaning
Excellent App BUT needs refresh
I love this app and use it all the time, but it has been crashing a bunch lately. No other app makes word lookups into flashcards as seamlessly. Would love a light UI refresh sometime! Great even for obscure and technical entries. Usually has an excellent bank of example sentences, as well.

Looks powerful... but HOW to use?
Without any type of accompanying tutorial nor an intuitive menu I have been totally stumped in getting anything out of the product. Googling demos and how-to’s was unproductive and the developers are yet to offer tips or referrals via their query window. Frustrating... as it appears to be an awesome set of tools. Andrew W.

I am not really ready to give a review like I want to. I use this app I believe a lot, but not enough to know the complete app and what more it has to offer. I do find it quite informative when I do use it so I’m giving (4) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I will return!
Bug photos
Appli très bien fait mais malheureusement en ce moment des bugs récurrents sur la lecture depuis les photos. L’appli freeze ou se stoppe d’elle même et il devient donc très difficile d’utiliser ce mode. Une fois ce bug fixé l’appli vaut 5 étoiles. App very well done, but unfortunately at this time there is recurring bugs on reading mode from the photos. The app freeze or stop itself and it become very difficult to use this mode. Once this bug will be fixed the app worth 5 stars.
Un peu déçue
Très bonne appli, le problème c’est que le scanner de kanji ne marche plus c’est à dire qu’il faut payer pour l’avoir à nouveau, je trouve ça dommage surtout que je l’avais téléchargé principalement pour ça :/
Best Japanese Dictionary App Out There
For me, Yomiwa is the best one. I got it when I was studying Japanese in high school and still have it after college. I’ve been studying for about a decade now which is crazy to me and I would consider myself more or less fluent at this point. Yomiwa has all your basic features including recognition of English, Romaji, Kana, and Kanji for any given word. It also has kanji and kana character recognition via picture or writing it yourself. Finally, it allows you to make word lists of your own and already has pre-created word lists by category (physics terms, cultural expressions, onomatopoeia, JLPT kanji lists, and many more). It also organizes kanji characters by frequency in usage, JLPT level, and some other things. I use this app almost every day and it has all the features I could ask for along with example sentences with pretty decent context and translations. I’ve only recently supplemented with the app “Reverso” since that gives a lot better contextual examples of words.
Useless
The app translates each character individually rather than combined and is thus useless. It also wasn't accurate at recognising hand-drawn characters (a list of possibilities to choose from would be helpful here).
Worthy
I used to use an app called Shinkanji - that app became inactive so I had to find a worthy replacement. Tough call because Shinkanji was really good. After just a couple of days with Yomiwa, I’d say it is a worthy replacement. It has OCR, which Shinkanji did not have so that’s a big bonus. It is less good at recognizing hand drawn kanjis than Shinkanji was, and my suspicion is that it may not be taking stroke order into account, only shape. If this improves, I will give the app five stars.
Great concept, needs work.
The app doesn't pick up the correct characters very often and therefore is not usable. However it is an excellent idea and if the scanner could be more accurate I'd be celebrating this app!

Try to use the app multiple time with no success... It's a good thing they have menu with pictures or a mockup of the meal in a display outside... I could not decipher the menu for simple things like figuring out if it was a beef or pork soup...

Yomiwa is just what I was looking for. Augmented reality meets Japanese Kanji Dictionary. Sure beats looking up kanji any other way! I really could have used this technology 12 years ago in Japan. PLEASE FIX THE FOCUSSING OF THE CAMERA - IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY! There are no instructions with this app and there are a few essential things I found by accident. For example: Manual Mode finds more than three characters - you can swipe left and right to see more alternatives! Alas sometimes it still doesn't produce the right kanji. Yomiwa seems to have trouble focussing which is annoying considering the iPhone 5 camera has such an excellent ability to focus near and far just by tapping on the subject. A little tweak could surely fix this. Anyway, at the moment, Yomiwa works far better when you just take a photo of Japanese text with the normal iPhone camera and then just use Yomiwa for character recognition by letting it access your "camera roll". Much less stuffing around with the auto focus problem this way. Can you make it "copy" text so the words can be pasted into Kotoba or another dictionary app?
