AI SLOP
AI narration, writing and animation. Ironic how an app that markets itself as an educational game ended up making me feel like a complete moron. I can’t believe I spent money on this.
An excellent app, however as truths emerge please update more.
I love this app with all my heart and I’ve learned quite a bit from it these past few months. However I have one grievance that I need to voice. The narrative presented for the Irish Potato Famine is very much so flawed. It has been made clear in past years that the Irish did not starve only because of the potato blight, but also because of the ruthlessness of the British exportation under Sir Charles Trevelyan. While potatoes were the main source of food for the Irish, it wasn’t by choice. Everything else grown raised or produced was exported to mainland Great Britain. Even when this became clear the British still did not decrease the amount of goods being exported, and used the potato famine as a convenient excuse.
Why
Why’s it asking for a review 5 seconds into using it
Meh…
I love the idea. I hate the execution. Waaay to much AI, which makes it feel a bit loveless, and why oh why can I not turn off the quizzes? I want to enjoy history, not go back to grade school.
No brain rot
I finally found something to spend hours on my phone for. I like games but this app makes it feel like a game but I’m learning. I recommend this app to everyone and anyone who wants to expand their knowledge.
Bait and Switch
Story art style is nothing like the ads, this is classic AI slop. Stay away
A Great Concept, but Too Anglo-American
Paladin is an ambitious and highly effective app for making history engaging and accessible. I’ve learned a lot from it, but its historical perspective feels surprisingly Anglo-American. British and American history receive disproportionate attention including an entire section devoted to the Founding Fathers. While major historical worlds such as continental Europe and the Mediterranean, Islamic civilizations, the great African empires, India, China and East Asia, and pre-Columbian civilizations receive far less attention. This is less a criticism of the quality of the content than of its perspective. For an app aiming to provide a broad overview of world history, I would love to see more civilizations presented on their own terms, rather than world history being told primarily through a British and American lens. The concept is excellent; a genuinely more global approach would make it even better.
The AI videos are ridiculous
I just downloaded this app after being bombarded for months by ads for Paladin. I expected the app to look like all the ads that I kept receiving. It definitely does not. Having a jacked up version of Socrates and Plato are unrealistic. There are enough images of historical figures to give us an idea of what they could’ve looked like. It loses all credibility with me when I see a Thomas Jefferson that’s been in the gym with Chris Hemsworth. Tell the story using facts and leave out all the unfounded dialogue between the characters.
Mandatory quizzes
Too many quizzes, I just want to listen to a historical story. Make it so you can opt out of quizzes, other than that it’s great
Quick way to learn
I think it’s a great app there are ads but they don’t push them all the time. So instead of doom scrolling you get to learn about the past a chapter takes about ten mins and they read to you if you just want to listen
Stop
They keep trying to charge me $69.99 even though I canceled the free trial subscription and deleted my account.
Not a fan of AI videos
Not in love with the AI videos, when I saw the promo on Instagram they used illustrations for the video lessons
Not what you see on Instagram
I loved the short videos on instagram. Simplistic drawings and controversial topics. I decided to get the app assuming the same quality. Nope. AI generated videos that distract from the story and none of the same energy you got from their content on instagram. I’m out $20. Hopefully my review will save you money. The app has a lot of potential but unfortunately it is completely different product than what you are sold.
Not what was advertised
I liked the animated stories that were filled with information. What I got was less animation and quizzes. I don’t want to be quizzed. Where are the informational stories as if I was a 5 year old?
Best app!
I’ve been looking for an app like this for years! I positively LOVE it! Very interesting history in small easy to digest bites! I am so excited to read and listen to every single story!
False Advertising
I was extremely disappointed. The ads showed animations and videos while they narrated the stories, which were very interesting. The app itself only showed some pictures and was nowhere near as interesting as the ads.
Great stories
Would love it if I could listen in the background instead of keeping the app open
Not as advertised
The Facebook feed ads are of videos ‘explained as if you were a 5 year old’ and those are fun and quick. This app is not that. It is historical and engaging, but not what I signed up for.
Interesting but not great
The stories and chapters are well done. Nice facts. But I dislike the mandatory quizzes and timed battles. If you don’t finish them your blocked from proceeding. I wish the Preferences had an option to turn off mandatory battles at the end of each chapter. They also should have an option to proceed on historical timelines and also to skip a chapter to come back to later. The choices are ?? Lastly, I wish the timelines were much more detailed. What are the exact timelines. What year did specific events take place.
Doomscrolling No More
This is a game changer, paladin app is great
It’s a money scam
I had the worst experience with this app. It didn’t let me cancel the subscription before the free trial was up. The page would just not work. It kept trying to charge my card after trying to cancel it 10 times. I opted to just delete the whole account and it said ALL of my information would be deleted. Two days later when I got paid it charged my card the $69.99. I tried to find a support to talk to and it told me to go through Apple. When trying to request a refund it told me there were no transactions to refund (even though I have an emailed receipted of the charge). I then called Apple support (automated of course) and again, there were no transactions. It wasn’t even difficult to go to the website to cancel it-it just wasn’t working.
Everything’s good but the pricing…
£89.99 a year is just crazy as I only use it less than 10 minutes a day. Even the discounted price, £59.99, is still a financial burden. I think anything below £30 a year seems like a reasonable price for me.
Paladin
It’s not the most challenging and the narrator tone and speed can be more inconvenient then helpful or entertaining. It’s cool for quick facts but it lacks depth and has a lot of bias instead of stating historical information as facts only. I paid for the yearly and wish I could get a refund.
Great but…
Solid app. Great idea! Quizzes questions cover things that are interesting but NEVER DISCUSSED. Its like showing a really interesting concept as a source of incorrectness instead of an opportunity to get new information.
How do I NOT WRITE A REVIEW?
Very good
Not as good as the ads.
I don’t like this app nearly as much as love the ads. The ads are captivating. The animation style and voiceover are intriguing. Every time I saw one on Facebook or Reddit, I wanted to watch the entire thing. I genuinely love them. I learned a lot from them. Yes, they were short, but the style was interesting, and the voice actor was interesting. He had a little pep in his voice, which was intriguing and made me interested and excited. Nothing about the way the stories are presented in the actual app comes close. I can’t stand to get through even one single chapter. The voice actors are harsh. The AI animations are rough at best. The voice actor is dry and angry, and nothing like your ads. I feel lucky that I waited for the sale, but I feel like I’ve been duped for my money. If only the app was even remotely as good as the ads.
Great content but sneaky billing
So far I think the app is great for learning history in a creative and original way. BUT I am quite upset about the billing. I was told by the app SEVRAL TIMES, in no uncertain terms, that I would be warned before the end of week long trial. This did not happen and now I have paid without realizing it for the full year which is not what I wanted.
Misleading advertising
The videos, and the app all together, are nothing like the ads I kept seeing on instagram. Which was the reason I downloaded it in the first place
I hate quizzes
I bought Paladin for the first year and I had to opt out before my subscription expired. I’m 60 years old. The last thing I want to do is pass a quiz just to watch really cool history stories. If they would make the quizzes optional I would definitely buy it again.
Learning soo much
So glad found paladin, it’s fun and learning soo much
Don’t not subscribe
Dont even try it! They rob you right away
Solid educational game
There isn’t that many ads, which is pretty cool. I also like that you have hearts that don’t take a full day to restock like most games, and that pro is an option, not a necessity like other games too :) (Yes, I’ve been referring to it as a game, cause it basically is)
Not at all what I expected…
The Paladin ads are MUCH better than the actual app. I signed up, paid and nothing in the app is like their ads. Paladin, if you guys just made your app content the same as your ads, I’d spend hours in it and happily pay.
Great app, selective history though
I really like how the app is designed, and the storytelling approach makes learning history much more engaging. However, the app is quite different from what is shown in the ads, and the historical content feels heavily focused on American users. The selection of stories also seems quite limited. For example, it would be great to see more coverage of civilizations such as the Persian Empire and the many Indian dynasties, which played an enormous role in world history. Whether intentional or not, leaving out major civilizations gives users an incomplete picture of history, maybe because it is curated for American users and only focuses on what media wants
Kathwenty
Absolutely loving this!! Love the quizzes too! 🙌
No Support No Refunds Customer Service is non existent
I’ve emailed them for a refund using their contact email 3 times. Only gotten 1 response of that my user name is but never heard back. support to this App sucks!!!!!!! Only way is to do a charge back.
Improvements
I think the app could use some improvement but everything has its’ errors. For example improvements would be to add more content about wars and more recent conflicts in the world. I’m interested in how the history impacts the world we are in now- how does it link to how we think now.
Number 1 mistake…billing yearly
Great idea but fire your marketing and accounting donkeys who think yearly was a ‘great’ idea. Monthly you got me but yearly straight away…get over yourself. No proof of it being good.
Not like the ads on social media
The ads on social media show videos with “vegetables” narrating. But the app has only still images with a voice narrating
Cold
Very good for learning history especially for adhd. Proper interesting
AI Slop
I found this app through the fun and engaging ads, I decided to give it a shot for a month and see. Waste of money, it’s all AI generated pictures and the writing is so low IQ sounding. Learning can be easy and enjoyable without sounding like we’re in a 2nd grade classroom. In general, I think this is a good idea that just doesn’t have good execution. I’d love to see an improvement with real art and photos and an editor.
My review
It’s really good I use it for quiz bowl I like the 1v1 ability although the ai videos and ai voice is a little bit uninteresting other than that it it’s really solid.
Transparency
I subscribed to Paladin because I wanted to learn history. The app is beautifully designed and presents historical events in a very engaging way, but I’ve become increasingly concerned that it blurs the line between documented history and fictional storytelling without telling the user. The Great Chicago Fire story centres on Anna Kowalski, who is presented exactly like a genuine historical figure. She has a biography, is the protagonist of the story, appears in quizzes as though her actions are historical fact, and can even be collected as a “Paladin” alongside undeniably real people such as Rosa Parks, Captain Johan Lindemann and Giuseppe Fiorelli. I tried to verify Anna Kowalski through historical sources but couldn’t find evidence that she was a documented participant in the Great Chicago Fire. If she is a real person, the app should cite its sources. If she is a fictional or composite character inspired by real events, the app should clearly say so. My concern isn’t that the app tells stories—storytelling is a fantastic way to teach history. My concern is that the app doesn’t distinguish between documented historical figures and narrative characters. As a paying subscriber, I expected to learn history, not be left guessing which people really existed. A simple label such as “Historical Figure,” “Composite Character,” or “Fictional Character Inspired by Real Events,” together with a “Sources & Further Reading” section for each story, would make the app far more trustworthy.
Not what the adds advertised
So I have just downloaded the app and luckily not paid for anything. If u are here to look at simple hand drawn cartoons with quick explanations then this is not the place. It has bad ai voiceovers and videos. Mostly texted based and just not what the ads suggested it was. I recommend just looking up YouTube channels that will be free and you can support small creators. This app is not built by people but by ai. :(
Fantastic app
This app came up as an ad on Facebook, I had a look a few times and did nothing. But the last time I looked it intrigued me so I downloaded and I’ve paid for 3 months. I absolutely love it! I’ve learned so much more about history I knew nothing or very little about. The way the stories are told is amazing, by voice, writing and video. It’s very easy to follow and understand and love the quiz’s throughout, makes you think about what you have just learnt.
Bronze vs Iron
Lost me during the first lesson on Chinese history when it stated the Qin dynasty’s iron weapons were better than their neighboring states which used bronze. Bronze weapons are known to be much stronger. Folks think “Iron Age comes after Bronze Age so iron must be better” but that’s just sloppy pop history and not fully understanding what the collapse of the Bronze Age really meant.
Opting out of trivia
Great app, just wished we can opt out of the trivia so you can just listen to it.
The audio is cripplingly slow
When you just want to listen the flow is constantly interrupted with long pauses and the need to keep pressing ‘continue’ when you just want the story to tell - totally ruining the whole thing
Quite different to what’s advertised
I downloaded the app and paid for a month’s subscription because I thought that the app would be a collection of animated videos with engaging voiceovers, like every Instagram ad makes it seem. I was disappointed to find it’s mostly text-based. I haven’t really used it and cancelled my subscription within a couple of days
