Love the App & Evo
I have so much enjoyment being able to play career and bots from my iPhone or iPad. I also have Chessnut Go & EVO boards. I appreciate my Career ELO transfers to the EVO from this app when logged in the same.
Terrible Service from a Shady Company
Paid for a Chessnut Go, which included a 40 USD shipping and a 14 USD shipping insurance. One week after I paid, they emailed me saying they haven't shipped the product because they wanted another 120 USD extra for the shipping, and that is not tariff. I would still be responsible for any tariff that the customs charge. I refused to pay and requested a refund, which was the other option indicated by the email. Another week went by. No contact no refund. Oh and I posted the same review on their website, and they instantly deleted it.
Praktisch
Tut, was es soll.
Bugs on core features
As a software developer I’m generally pretty forgiving, but I must say this app is testing my limits… The Chess.com integration simply does not work (tried every workaround), UI for reviewing game is really bad. Just take one month of Claude Max subscription and fix it all at once for everyone please !
Missing Core Features
There should be a special light animation and sound, if someone is chess mate. Why does it make a sound on chess, but not on chess mate?! Get yourself a Claude code and add new features! Make a survey with your users and a public backlog. That’s how you could drastically improve your product.
Love it
I have a chessnut move. Worth the price but the app would be so much better if it had a browser that could see chess boards. For example while Chessreps has an app they also have a website, if I could open the new chessnut app go to a browser and learn my openings on the physical board that would be a game changer. Definitely recommend buying the board. And the app is great
Such a poor design when AI dev is readily available
With LLM being readily available for dev, there is really no reason this app is so bad. Having to type in my SSID instead of scanning for WiFi on update. Being unable to connect my move to the internet. Baffling and honestly feels like a cash grab.
Very good but extremely buggy
I have a chestnut move and I’m using this app, overall it has many features and gameplay, but it is extremely buggy, such as, when I’m playing puzzles or using analysis, when I open the settings, it imediatly closes and when I’m using puzzles, the puzzle with switch to a different one after it has been chosen and then switches again to a dofferent one which I can solve
App ruins entire experience
Chessnut makes amazing boards, but the supporting software is atrocious. Im about to sell my board and move to chessup because of this. User experience on chessup is WAY better even though the board is too arcade like and plastic.
Latest update does not connect to WiFi
The latest update for firmware does not seem to sync. My chestnut move board worked fine and now it won’t connect to play chess.com games. The board moves will not sync to actual game board, but it works when you move on the app to the game board. Disappointing been messing with it for hours.
Add local multiplayer
Multiplayer is called clock for anyone who is confused
I paid $700 for a non moving robotic chess set
This POS arrived broken and your app is barely functional. Cool.
Excellent App
Very good application!
Wifi connection doesn’t work
Connecting to wifi doesn’t even work. Cannot update the board. You have to manually type in the name of the wifi, connecting through your phone or selectable menu might be better.

Fine app.
I have a Chessnut Pro board. Two things I’d like to see in the app are 1) A way to turn off all beeps. It beeps loud enough to wake the dead when saving a game or connecting and disconnecting from Bluetooth. I want to use it at my club but don’t want to hear a beep when I start a game or save one. EDITED: Most recent update lets me silence the board completely. This makes it much better! 2) It would be nice to let us set up a position in the board editor. And to correct a position that is imported from the camera. For example if it use the editor and import a position from the camera and it makes a mistake, I can’t fix it. Would be nice to be able to choose and remove pieces like on lichess editor.
Needs improvement
Sync needs to be better, the pieces recognization is good but not really seamless. For move: Add auto connect, warning if pieces not recognized, if I delete the sync pieces it should actually delete it, support charging board also.
Good app needs some love
App works decently well but could be improved.
Lichess?

Not a review but a question
How would I be able to buy chestnut VIP?
The app does not work
Won’t allow me to play online games on lichess or bots on chess.com. Makes me wish I never bought the chessboard in the first place
Good app
The app is useful and well done with good functionality but it lacks an analysis of the games with arrows to better visualize the moves rather than just the written moves 👌
Difficult to use
Far more complicated to use than it should be.
Can’t link my chess.com account (connected with google)
The app does not let me connect my chess.com account …
Does the job!
Full disclosure, I mainly used the app to connect the board, and then connect to chess.com. I haven’t used the features in the app itself much. Chess.com provides all the features I require. This app has adequate features on its own, comparable to lichess.
App won’t let you sign up or use chess.com
Board is great (I have the move). But this app won’t let me sign up or play against chess.com opponents. The signup screen asks for a verification code but there is no prior step to even get a verification code. Totally broken.
PGN können jetzt geladen werden
Die Funktion PGN Dateien zu laden, wurde inzwischen eingebaut. Auch FEN kann nun importiert werden.
Buggy and unpolished
Really surprised that a $700 piece of hardware can have such poorly made software. This app is definitely half baked. Bluetooth connection often has to manually be connected. The voice recognition simply doesn’t work. Feels like an alpha version of an app coded in a week.
ELO in Carrere mode
I’ve been using the Chessnut Pro wooden board for a few weeks now, and I’m really impressed with the hardware — it’s beautifully made and works flawlessly. However, the iOS app still has room for improvement, especially when it comes to the Career Mode experience. I contacted customer support to request a reset of my Career Mode ELO, since my account started at 1000, even though my actual playing level is significantly lower. After several messages, I was informed that it’s not possible to lower the ELO or reset Career Mode, and that the minimum level is fixed at 1000 regardless of losses. This makes the Career Mode quite frustrating for beginners: you’re matched against much stronger bots without a fair progression from lower levels. I understand the intention behind a fixed ELO floor, but I think the experience would benefit greatly from: • an option to reset Career Mode or manually adjust ELO; • a Beginner Career Mode with more accessible difficulty; • or dynamic ELO adjustment based on performance. The app itself is nice to use and works well with the board, but I hope future updates will make the experience more beginner-friendly and flexible for players who are just starting their chess journey and want to improve step by step.
Please fix time controls
This app is great, but the time controls don’t display or work correctly when interacting with a bot like Maia. Please fix this issue as it’s very important to me. Thanks.
Very bad, doesn’t record all of game
Very unfortunate. 11 games played in our New Year’s Eve, on Chessnut go, and went to transfer to today via this, this app did not grab the full match of many games, it would just mid match. This is very unfortunate.
Good Progress
This is a good start. However all of the YouTubers are showing the android version and it has so much more capabilities. Starting with Chess Vision which opens the door to many more apps being compatible. Downloading engines is a great feature but we don’t have it. Creating your own engine is also not available in iOS. Let’s go chessnut. Let’s get some equality here. Update: they have now added downloading engines to the iOS version. Thank you! Still not sure about chess vision. Update: playing by tapping is cool but I can’t castle! Thanks Update: The castling issue is fixed!
Works but what is the „Engine“ and VIP?
The App works but sadly I don’t know and cannot find anywhere what the „Engine“ does? It lets me download Trainings in App but then I cant use them. If I‘m supposed to buy something then how and where do I unlock it? „CHESSNUT VIP your subscription has expired“ what does this even mean when I cant buy one nor is there an explanation what VIP is.
Great but needs some polishing
The app mostly just works and pairs nicely with the Chessnut Air board. One star removed as the game review functionality cumbersome to use. Surprised by so many grammatical errors which knocks off another star for me.
Only thing missing is a clock mode for online games
The interface is clean, the connection is stable, and the overall experience is smooth. The only thing missing is a clock mode for online games. It would be great to have a feature that simply shows the player’s and opponent’s remaining time without displaying the current board position. This would add a nice touch for those who prefer focusing on the board itself during play.
Access Denied
Can’t even play online with chess.com because it doesn’t comply with googles secure browser policy. I bought it for that purpose. How disappointing.
I like it!
I really love this new app. The overall design of the app is nice, I like the career feature and the new possibilities with this app such as clock games. One thing I would really appreciate is an analysis board where you can just place and move pieces wherever you want and it shows you the top engine line. That would be so cool for analysing positions. Another thing I like is that this app supports horizontal use on my iPad. With the old app it was always a pain. Thanks for the new app, but please work on the analysis board 🙏
PLEASE REALIZE this app’s interface Weakens the game experience…
iOS version is a Major improvement, however a GREAT IMPROVEMENT would have iPad game screen HIGHLIGHT the Opponent’s Last ‘From and To’ Squares!! AND I AM SERIOUS that this Detracts from the game experience!!! Another SORE POINT is the BOARD COLOR ADJUSTMENT is poorly implemented. Another negative to game experience! I do own the electronic Air computer chess board, however the interface weakens the total experience! As a standalone chess on an iPad there are several FAR SUPERIOR chess apps with the Free SMALLFISH as my favorite. Chess Studio is another powerhouse app absolutely filled with overwhelming features!
It’s getting better and better!!
FINALLY, there’s the option now to go backwards in analysis mode when undoing the moves over the board!!! This has been SUCH an important piece in being able to analyze well with a Chessnut pro, and I’m so glad that the developers listened to this request. What is still missing is the important feature to remove irrelevant variations in analysis mode, and having the option to promote variations to mainline. As of right now, it only takes one wrong move and suddenly a variation that is irrelevant & never happened becomes the mainline and you cannot undo this. Nevertheless, the Chessnut team is inching closer and closer to having an app that keeps what it had promised.
Very good experience
This app, along with the Chessnut Air board, is a really great tactile chess experience. I love that that app includes several engines (including Maia) and I’ve had no issues connecting with the board. Overall I would highly recommend the app and the board to anyone that likes playing chess but wants a real “over the board” experience.
Doesn’t Work on iOS 17
When using Chessnut on our kids’ iPad, the screen goes black right when the computer makes its first move on chess.com and then doesn’t recover. And this Apple iPad 6 cannot be updated past iOS 17. Note, this app works fantastically on my iPhone 15 with iOS 8! However, I do not want to buy a new Apple device for my kids just to make this work, so I’ll be returning the Chessnut board.
Please make this app workable
Your physical product is great. Please hire a product manager and get this app in shape. It’s very difficult to even sign up and log in. Implement SSO like the old one. Get rid of capcha, it’s not needed and your current implementation is broken. You can resolve all of the main issues in 2 sprint cycles, please do it 🙏.
Career mode
Please fix career mode. I have the EVO and the GO. This app needs to have similar features as the EVO
Good new feature!
I love the addition of extracting recorded games from the board directly. It makes analyzing the games played OTB so much easier. Good job! I wish the developer can do the same for games played against the bot. Currently, we can only see the moves played but can’t copy the PGN directly. I need to screenshot it, and then OCR the screenshot to get the PGN out. I hope it will be added in future updates. Edit: I just found out that we can actually copy the PGNs from the bot matches. It’s just not clear in the first place. What a life saver!
App won’t let me recover password
Can’t use app at all. Can’t sign in and can’t recover password. Customer service unresponsive.
Disappointing
In the old app you could play with a friend. This option is either not there or cannot be found. In Analysis, you cannot save nor is it automatically saved. I used to use it to record from given position, eg. when exploring positions from a book. Disappointing!
