Absolutely amazing
Wanted to share the love for this app. For serious chess training, it’s by far the best I have on my phone. The fact that it’s free on the App Store is crazy.
$20 bucks a month??
I was a huge chess tempo website fan for years. Loved that the tactics had tags on which tactics were involved and discussion. Loved even that horribly slow endgame practice. It was such a Web 1.0 aesthetic hiding a pearl of a site. But it wasn’t mobile friendly (again Web 1.0) so I moved away from it over the years. I just heard that they had an app and was so excited… until I get through the opening questions and tells me it is a 5 day trial and then $20 bucks a month. Actually a bit more because it’s $5 per week and there are 13 periods of 4 weeks each year. No way to skip that and get a limited option free play or anything. What a shame bait and switch. Also Apple should note that these numbers do not match the disclosed in app purchases in the app description.
Great Functionality but Terrible UI
App is great. Everything works, and is great for training opening repertoires. The UI is ugly though. The App needs a UI overhaul badly.
Not bad, Could Be Better
FIRST OF ALL why WHY WHY can I click my opponent's pieces I DON'T NEED TO DRAW ARROWS it sucks when you're clicking your opponent's pieces before you click your own and then you can't move BECAUSE YOU CLICKED ON YOUR OPPONENT'S PIECES second of all fine app but ui could be better it would be better if it was more bullet friendly otherwise this app is great but tbh I'd prefer Lichess/Chess.com because this needs improvement

Best Chess Training App!
I’ve used them all, this is the best. Tens of thousands of well-curated puzzles. Much better spaced repetition implementation for training openings than the other guys. Great practical endgame training as well. My game has improved a lot in the last year and CT is a big part of it.
Cannot connect to server
The last few days I’m getting this error all the time.
Almost perfect
Tactics are important, this a great to learn them. One minor quibble is that it is easy to tap skip when you wanted retry. Move the buttons so they all have their own spot, the 5 stars
Disappointed.
For someone like myself who has a decent game of chess. I’m not close to great and wouldn’t even say that I’m good, however I can hold a game in any NYC park and it will be war. I heard about this app through reading online (can’t recall where) and it was leasing this app for helping the writer to strengthen and expand his game, and fairly quickly, as he put the time and effort into studying as well. Now here I am at the app, and at first it appears to be cut and dry, no frills (which I like) however, I have no idea how to use this app, the icons don’t come with a how-to prompt on first use, no help or support or manual. It would be really nice to know how to use the app, what each icon means and it’s function. Not only would it create a more user friendly app, most likely will lean it towards a more attractive interface, and almost importantly it can still be the go-to app for people like myself who don’t understand how to navigate between icons. I would love to learn more, and use the app. I paid for a subscription. Why pay for a subscription, if I can’t find answers and haven’t a clue of what icons/buttons I am pressing or what they do. Please, if there is a possibility for modification, let that be a priority. The idea is to bring the world to chess and help each player improve… even those who have even moved a pawn yet!
Connection issues
Was working great until this week. Now I always get connection issues when opening the app.
Best chess puzzles
No other chess app has puzzles as good as chesstempo. They're always the same type of techniques on lichess and chess.com. Here, there's a lot more variety in the types of tactics and strategies
Usually good but now there's a bug
There's a bug now that makes the engine take ~5 seconds to make its move for each tactics puzzle. Never used to do this before. I restarted my phone and uninstalled/reinstalled the app. Didn't fix the issue iPhone 15 pro.
Very promising
I applaud the hard work and I'm a premium subscriber. I guess my biggest issue with chess tempo has been the rating of puzzles. I don't want free elo points of course but I thought that many of those were too underrated. An X puzzle cannot possibly be rated 1500 when Komodo itself cannot achieve an advantage until 7 or 8 moves deep into the line. And you're expected to solve it in less than 20 sec in blitz mode or CT will punish you and subtract points from you, even if solved correctly. This is in difficulty mode: Medium. It's been quite frustrating to say the least.
Great tactics, abysmal ui
The content is great. The ui is abysmal. Just a mess of menus and icons that make no sense. Good luck figuring out how to change your problem set. Obviously that option is under the info icon for the problem you’re on! Click into a submenu icon. Good luck getting back out again. Seriously one of the worst ui designs I’ve ever seen. The dev has said it’s supposed to feel familiar to those who have used the web version. Well apps aren’t websites and this was a massive opportunity to create a simple intuitive interface. If you want a tactics trainer with a decent ui then I’d look at chess.com instead.
App is okay but needs to add a takeback option to correct misclicks
The app is okay and the puzzles are good practice but the app doesn’t have a takeback option to correct misclicks. Not having this means that once a misclick happens, there’s no way to continue the game. It’s no longer chess at that point since your opponent is getting to play two moves in a row and you’re in essence having your turn skipped. When this happens I just let the game time out since the game doesn’t have an abort option either. Lichess has the takeback feature implemented to correct for misclicks. ChessTempo would be a better app if it had it too. Otherwise it’s an app that isn’t about chess, only some chess-like game.
Impressed
Used the app quite a few years ago and deleted it because the website was more polished, which isn’t saying much because both were in dire need of an overhaul. Overhaul achieved! The app looks cleaner and has well defined menus. I truly enjoy tapping around the screen to discover the new features that have been added while I took a hiatus from the game. The puzzles are top notch as always, as you’d expect from chess tempo, so no changes there. I look forward to working with chess tempo again to increase my understanding of this great and timeless game.
Broken
Changed the board font and now the tactics page quits whenever I open it
A good training app
Overall the app is good. It seems like it’s feature rich, however the endgames training seems a bit buggy. I can’t seem to make moves... not sure if this is just my inexperience or if it’s an actual issue. Hopefully app developer addresses this issue.
Disappointing
Chess Tempo is one of the best websites for tactics training puzzles, but their app is garbage. The interface is confusing. None of the options are labeled or explained. I just did a tactic where I wanted to finish the game against a computer. I have done this before so I know it is possible, but after clicking on a dozen options, I gave up frustrated.
Best chess learning app ever
Thanks to the App developers! This App has a lot of useful and FREE functions for chess learning! My favorite parts are the training mode for the opening, middle and end games! It allows you to memorize the main lines and the particular lines as well.
I’m human
Chess tactics is no good at all some of them are straight computer tactics average person is not going to spot them moves. I believe if you could select a range in which is comfortable for you great but you guys fluctuate making it inferiorating because I know some of the ones you mix in is highly rated players not 1300 or 1200 computer plays and thinks different if I could guess what a high level computer would do then I would be able to beat that engine
This is what grandmasters use
There’s nothing like the tactics DB that Richard built in chess tempo. Not just a database with thousands of good tactics, but it rates you and the games so that you always get tactics at your level If you listen to the podcast “perpetual chess”, you will hear many grandmasters say that chess tempo is a part of their training plan. I am under 1300 (aka really bad) and I love playing chess tempo tactics as well. It is true that the UI is awkward and slow, IMO. But that’s not what I get the app for.
It helps but some probs
Chess tempo is good but,I think u should get rid of Good Move but not The comps first choice because there was a question that I did and after all the best moves I was up two rooks and a knight for a queen that is winning but I got it wrong please fix it
Missed upgrade
I payed a subscription for a silver member yesterday evening, but my account hasn’t been upgraded yet. Could you solve the problem plese? I will reward you with five stars.
Great App
An awesome site for chess improvement with a lot of functionality. App works seamlessly in my experience
Horrible ux
The app perhaps is good but it’s so difficult to navigate. It’s so frustrating to use it I just want to stay away from it. Unless you change the ux I will keep one star review sorry.
Great, but..
Glad there is a phone app for this, and it helped me a lot. one issue I have with this is that it doesn’t show you how many problems you’ve done, and this is a big thing for me since i’m in a chess class and need to do 35 correct problems. Still a great app, though.
Not Impressed
I find the app not as user friendly as others. I’ve started a number of games only to have most of them aborted or just resigned. There is no way to close the account so I’ll just log out and forget it was ever there.
Great practice tool but bug in the tactic history
This is an overall great app to use for training and daily regimens, but there for there is a bug in the solving history when I go to see my last 50 tactics it will not show which is very frustrating
Developer is very responsive
I started using the app and website this summer. Mostly the openings trainer. I had some problems with the spaced repetition. The initial intervals were too long for me to remember the missed positions. I posted to the forum and he reprogrammed the site and app so that no one would have this problem. He also has a feature to customize these intervals for people who learn faster than me!
Lack of transparency
Unfairly bans subscribed players and refuses to provide the reason why. If you play well, choose the other platforms where you are not wrongly accused of cheating and denied a proper and sound clarification.
Good but ...
I am thrilled that Chess a Tempo is finally on iOS. Pros: Good set of problems. Other features Cons: On the iPhone, the board and pieces look to small for problem-solving. On the iPad, too big. Does not accept alternate right moves. For example, will only accept one line of checkmate, when another is clearly also right.
Best of luck - it’s just not for me
I applaud the effort here to offer another thoughtful online chess alternative to platforms like chess.com or lichess; however, the mobile app interface leaves a lot to be desired. It’s a little clunky, congested, and a little unpolished. All in all I don’t see what the chesstempo point of difference is versus the before mentioned online chess platforms. I wish you guys luck in expanding, improving, and evolving your product into something better and different. I’ll check back on you guys from time to time. Keep going! #growthegame
Excellent
Simple and efficient app. Highly recommended.
DO NOT BUY IT
It takes 3 billion years to load, so if you like chess and do 2 hours of puzzles every day, you are wasting 1 hour of your life each day. This is also not my internet’s problem because everything else loads just fine. Also a lot of puzzles are overrated and underrated, and after you set it on hard, medium, or easy, in the beginning it will give you what level you want, but after you do a few hundred puzzles, hard medium and easy are just the same.
Hackers
I love Chesstempo
I’ve used Chesstempo nearly every day for over ten years. Great website and great new app.
Quite literally the worst app I’ve ever downloaded
Did you guys even try and use this app on mobile? It’s a disaster. I thought the other review saying it was a UI nightmare was just joking but wow, this looks like it was put together by someone who’s never even heard the words “user interface” and “user experience.” Why even bother making this an app, it clearly can’t be financed properly
Missing Endgames
You can’t play endgames in the app
It’s Great!
I have been using chess tempo for tactics for a long time. I highly recommend getting this app!
Not user friendly
Very unintuitive app. I am looking for an alternative to Chess.com but this is definitely not it. The app is confusing and unintuitive.
