Cannot figure it out
I am by no means stupid but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to play this. For example, I created some Power Ups buy I CANNOT complete them. There should be a “done” or “completed” but there isn’t. I have searched for help in their FAQ, Zendesk etc. There is a How To Play section which is useless-it assumes you already know how to play! I am very rarely this disappointed in an app but I will be asking for a refund for this.
A LIFESAVER. To the developer, please invest in keeping it functional
SuperBetter catapulted me out of a deep depression. I tried the app a year ago but it didn’t take. This new version managed to push me out of my funk. Thank you so much, Jane McGonigal, for this app and the insights from your own experience with depression that birthed it. Every day, I look forward to going on quests and battling my demons. Unfortunately, five days in with this new version, I am missing some of my current notes (I know I couldn’t keep notes from the old version). I find these notes to be vital benchmarks on how I’m doing as well as a virtuous feedback habit loop. I have had to write my notes in an actual notebook in case more of them go missing. SuperBetter is an important LIFELINE for me. I hope SuperBetter LLC continues to invest in keeping this app functioning smoothly. SUPERBETTER SAVES LIVES.
A lot of bugs, inflexibility, and no free trial
I am one of the OG users of SuperBetter and was really excited when I heard it was getting an update. I do like the new UI, much more aligned with current design trends but that’s about all I like. First, I don’t like that I couldn’t have some type of free trial to test some of the features. At the very least make a free trial if people want to play solo just to check it out. I feel like this is an easy thing to add. Second, there are a lot of bugs! Notes wouldn’t save, entire plans would go missing, I couldn’t add Power-Ups, Quests, Bad Guys, etc. Way too buggy to use regularly. Third, the information and standard power-ups etc. make the app really inflexible. It feels like while you advertise the app to be a flexible way to conquer your goals, you really want the user to stay within the pre-designed goals. It really needs more flexibility and ease of use with that flexibility. I want to be able to decide what my own powers and quests are and use the pre-designed ones as inspiration or fillers. This is especially important if you want to market this to groups that want to create their own items specific to their group. This app has SO MUCH potential but I feel like there’s more focus on it looking like a cool game versus being a useful app, It needs more work before I would consider using this in the classroom.
Latest update broken
Superbetter is a wonderful app for what it does, however it's latest update is broken. Can no longer login to access my account or create a new one. Password retrieval, username retrieval and support for other apps (Facebook, Google, etc) does not sync correctly. A great app to use, but at this moment it's too broken to consider.
Great App
A great app!
Cumbersome And Boring.
This “game” functions poorly. It’s really difficult to figure out how to operate the app and if you’re an individual, playing for “free” there seems to be a paucity of invitations to play. Even if I paid a subscription price, I doubt the boring, clunky operations would improve.
Might be helpful
Trying this to see how it might help a friend with depression … and think it might!
I loved it
They updated this app and it totally changed. Now I can’t actually access any content or do anything with it. I was using it to get through rough Canadian winters and was on such a role. Now it seems concretely and absolutely unusable.
Nice app
i really only played because of a project but its cool.
Great game for mental health!
Super Better is a great way for me to add some fun and creativity to my mental health challenges, and I can even make my bad guys and power-ups to tailor the app to my needs! Super Better also has me check in daily with my family and friends so it not only helps keep me healthy but my relationships as well. Overall a great way to work on my mental health!
Terrible. Stinky.
Money scam & doesn’t work. Telling me my account isn’t verified when you need to verify your account to even get into the app. Over priced, cant play solo. Highly recommend you find a better alternative
A great app to improve mental and physical well-being!
I really liked this app and plan to keep it on my phone! For starters it was free and did not have annoying pop-up ads which was a plus. The app is meant to help build resilience and motivation by completing challenges that promote well-being (ex. drinking water, gratitude, positive self-talk) but also gives the option to address other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress. SuperBetter is advertised for users age 4+ years old on the app store listing. However, the actual app requires users to be at least 13 years old. One of the strengths about this app is that it is very visually appealing and has cool sound features, especially after completing a challenge. The app tracks your accomplishments and challenge wins which allows you to earn badges and move up levels. This component can be especially appealing for adolescents because winning challenges can be rewarding. When we are rewarded, we feel good, and this is especially true with adolescents due to the increase of dopamine receptors present during this age (Steinberg, 2014). Additionally, the app lets you sync to other apps such as Facebook and Twitter which allows you to share your accomplishments with your social media followers. SuperBetter also allows the users to personalize their experience by offering a variety of options which can be adjusted at any time. Aside from challenges and activities, the app also provides links to articles regarding mental health which I found pretty helpful and a good resource especially for adolescents. On the other hand, one downside of this app is that even though it contains challenges, it didn’t feel so much like a game. Now this might have been because I didn’t add any other users (which is an option), so perhaps my opinion on this might be different if I had added other people. I also think that in order to get the full experience out of this app you have to have some level of accountability otherwise it might just be another app that takes up space on your phone. Despite the weaknesses, this app seems promising and age appropriate for adolescents. The main concept of this app is to help build resilience and promote healthy habits which can help foster and support adolescent development. Adolescents are influenced by the many systems that they belong to (family, school, community). Hence each of these systems creates both protective and risks factors for individuals. The more protective factors an individual has, the better outcome that individual will experience. Adolescents who have protective factors are able to overcome adversity and persevere which helps build resiliency (Laser, Jenson, & Nicotera, 2010). During adolescence, resiliency is extremely important because it allows them to build good problem-solving skills in the presence of risk factors. This can influence the way they navigate through hardship later in life. The challenges on the SuperBetter app symbolize adversities that adolescents may face in real life. The adolescent is then able to create a plan in order to complete the challenge. Completing challenges allows the adolescents to build skills which they then can transfer to other situations in life. Given that the app offers many different challenges to promote mental and physical well-being, the adolescent will have many opportunities to practice these skills and make active choices to persevere.
Out with the old…
The developers decided to change the game with a recent update, and scrap all of your progress from the last one. Kind of unusual in the gaming world. This update should have been an entirely new game, allowing long-standing users to keep playing the original and bringing in new ones with this version, maybe call it Super Duper Better. After re adding other reviews and hearing of the subscription, in addition to losing my game, guess it’s time to move on. At least they can’t erase my copy of the book with an update!!!
Enjoyable but has a strong flaw
I enjoy using this app and find it motivating to achieve my goals. One drawback: I have to click several times: “I did this” on Quests to get the app to register that I completed a certain Quest. It’s just on Quests that this happens. Not on Challenges or Power Ups. It’s an annoying feature and I don’t know why this is a problem.
Love it
A friend of mine recommended the SuperBetter app to me a while ago and it has been a daily tool that I use. SuperBetter offers a wide range of quests that cater to different aspects of personal growth. Whether it's practicing mindfulness, trying a new hobby, or working on communication skills, the app provides a variety of options to choose from. The ability to track my progress and see how far I've come is not only motivating but also helps me stay focused on my goals.
DON’T SUBSCRIBE!
This app is awful. I paid $24 and solo quests don’t work at all. Check out the other recent reviews, this app has gone downhill. Don’t waste your money.
Love the app, design could be better
This app is amazing. The way it’s set up is so easy to use, has such great coping skills, and is set up in a way that’s functional and fun. It would be nice if there was an update for the design of the app as it looks about 10 years old and isn’t the most eye capturing. If the app design was updated, it would be a near-perfect app.
UI Almost Unusable on New iPhones
This app hasn’t been updated in three years and it shows. Even a small UI update would go a long way. The menus are very hard to navigate and a lot of text is hidden. I cannot recommend this, although I very much enjoyed the book by the creator of the app and the ideas it tries to implement. Keep in mind that this app also doesn’t comply with Apple’s new privacy standards, as it hasn’t been updated since they were implemented.
Just started using app
Using this with my youth I support. Just getting to know how it all works🙂
Incredible App!!
As a college student seeking ways to stay motivated, focused, and mentally resilient, I stumbled upon SuperBetter, an extraordinary app that has transformed my daily life for the better. SuperBetter turned the concept of self-improvement into a captivating game, allowing me to unlock my potential and become keep me on a better track as a busy college kid.
What happened?
I used to love this app. Now I can’t even figure out how to use it:(
Add Future Boosts (pls) = 5 stars
All this app needs
Not mobile optimized?
I have the latest iPhone and the latest update of the app. For some reason this app looks like it’s meant for desktop or something, it’s not mobile optimized. I can’t read any of the task descriptions past the first line of text, because there is a blank page in front that has one tiny “I did this” button, and otherwise is just there to cover up the screen! Any value in the motivational text is completely lost if you can’t read it. That’s sorta the point of the app. I’m giving it some stars anyway though because it’s beautiful and free, and has the right idea if only someone had considered that some people might use an app on a phone.
I’m confused
I have notifications on but for some reason it’s not working and when I check in my settings there’s no option for notifications for this app, and I feel as though there aren’t enough quests or power ups and I don’t know how to come up with any myself
Caring Developers
Couldn’t make an account due to a bug, but the developer’s fixed it very fast. I appreciate their commitment to making this app better. I had already spent many hours over the weekend setting up another app, so I’m not willing to do it all again. I appreciate the great customer service, though!
SuperSadder
I had the old version of this app, and while it was a little clunky, it allowed me to play SuperBetter solo while tracking the quests, power ups, bad guys, etc., that I spent A LOT of time developing for myself and setting up in the app. This new version doesn’t retain any of the data I set up, and on top of that, I can’t create any custom quests, power ups, etc. without a subscription. I realize the developers need a way to fund continued development of the app, but this was a surprising and unwelcome change. I would have expected a subscription for host accounts, or maybe to access power packs or social features—not for basic functionality. SuperBetter was created to help people navigate challenges like illness or injury, but charging money for solo play will make this app inaccessible to a lot of disabled users. Looks like I’m going back to logging my gameplay in a notebook. Edited to add: The fact that a completely new app was pushed as a PATCH UPDATE, based on the releases’ semantic versioning, makes the scope of these changes even more annoying. Yes, a change description is in the release notes. But come on. There were better ways to handle this rollout.
Set goals get better
Now with friends! The super hero thing helps stay motivated
needs an update
the interface looks like it hasn’t been updated since the iphone 2 good concept but this is a major turnoff - indicates that this app isn’t based off recent research either
Could be better
Superbetter is a great app if you want to get more motivated and have a healthier lifestyle but the quests are repetitive. It’s easy to use, relatable and efficient but it could work on the quests and how you can level up. The service is great and it’s a good bang for your buck. The design is eye catching colourful!
College Student Review!!
I have recently started using the SuperBetter app and it has been a great experience so far! As a college student, I find it extremely helpful for staying motivated and feeling more positive throughout the day. It’s easy and I like how it encourages me to set small goals to help me stay on track. I would definitely recommend this app to everyone but especially college students who are looking to stay more organized and motivated!
You Can’t Do Anything on the App Without a Subscription
I wanted to check out this app since it has good reviews, but it’s literally impossible to do anything in it without a subscription. It sounds like it’s helpful to people, but without being able to test it before buying, it’s pointless. If there is anything to do without a subscription, they should probably make that more clear since the only thing available to me is adding friends to the app or something and frankly, I’m not on a mental health app to add friends. I’m there to help center myself and stay motivated.
Great idea- 1 year ago*?
The app won’t recognise the achievements I’ve gained today, it says ‘1 year ago’ next to all of them on the activity page. I AM doing them!! Honest!! Seriously though, I’ve only had this app for an hour or so and I've never had it previously, so any suggestions? Ive hugged myself like 10 times now and it still says ‘never done’ on the To Do page and ‘1 year ago’ on Activity. If i hug myself any more it’s going to start getting weird.
For under 20 year olds
If you are living with depression, are a grown up or not into games this is not for you. Too childish sorry Guy’s.
Brilliant idea but digital products needs improvement
I was invited in by a dear friend and was blown up by the whole concept: I loved it! Finally somebody made it fun and engaging to bite size your way to awesomeness together with trusted allies! As soon I started my ally journey though I started getting a bit confused every now and then and also experiencing some unexpected glitches (mostly with the iOS app). As a seasoned experience designer I would so love to jam together and help this idea thrive and superheroes spring everywhere around the planet! I wish they can rapidly make it up and address the key experience gaps soon enough - which will certainly prompt me to increase the number of stars here :)
I want to earn my 7 minutes!
Jane Mcgonigal’s TED talk, “The game that can give you 10 extra years of life” is truly inspirational. The skills this game will help me learn will make me a better more positive person. I can’t wait to play! Thanks Jane.
DO NOT PAY FOR THIS!
You ruined this app. It had helped me with depression for a very long time. Now i can’t even upgrade by account to get past your new pay wall. You really are the worst type of developers. Went from “SuperBetter” to super trash. Thank you for ruining our day.
Good app to support the most awesome game ever
The app can be a pain to use sometimes. And stuff is missing from the dashboard like the Future boosts. But on some other criteria it's actually better than the desktop version (the lists are better sorted out and less overwhelming and frustrating on the app. Anyway, the game is plain awesome if you're looking to better yourself, especially if you're careful enough not to let it ignite your perfectionism too wildly. Life changing stuff in that perspective ❤️
Too buggy Reminders don't work
Used to love this app! It was so much more motivating than a regular task list. Unfortunately doesn't look like it's being updated and now bugs like the reminders not working and quests not showing as completed are rendering it not very useful.
The system is great
The app is not so great. Needs a bit of UX love
Off to a great start
I’ve foiled my arch nemesis, Procrastination, plans three times already
Very disappointed
Not happy
Support for Apple Watch
Great App. Just need to add app for apple watch.
Average, depends on Wat u want
Good ideas but is yet to take off, I love turning my life into this fantasy world but it still needs a bit of work. The other problem is that it crashes an unbelievable amount!
Love the idea...
I love the idea behind this, it’s just not very user friendly! Needs some UX/UI work done and I would use this every day!
Encouraging
This app is so encouraging when you invest a little time to add your own bad guys, quests, and power ups. It’s like a life dashboard. Even if no one notices how hard I work to reach these goals, my phone now gives me points and level ups. 😆😎
Not a game
Really disappointed with this. It describes itself as a game but really it’s just lists of things to do. I was looking for something to support students in addition to the school counseling they receive but they will be done with this in 30 seconds. The description of “quests” makes it sound like a Prodigy (academic) game but it’s not a game or fun at all.
super awesome
this is like the fun aunt that you used to do chores with - when you had so much fun you didn't even realize you were working!
A bit glitchy
I really want to love this app, but it can be a bit glitchy. Frequently need to check off item multiple times to get it to take. Ally navigation is not intuitive.
