The only thing I rely on
Been using for a decade. Have my webnovels in text running as I work, hike, fish. 10x more efficient than anything else, and doesn’t eat into your day.
Scam! Frustrating App
The voice is robotic, the same one u can get for free with ur iPhone. It doesn’t work, I try to jump to a different page and it will only keep reading from beginning everytime. Run away!
Excellent but voice config has gotten worse
I have used VoiceDream for years and it’s been an amazing app. Recently, the voice selection and configuration has gotten difficult to user. For example, adjusting voice speed seems very glitchy. I think some of the speed config doesn’t apply to the AI Enhanced voices and instead different config needs to be used, but a) that’s bad UI even tho no doubt there are technical reasons behind it, and b) at least the inapplicable config should be unavailable for voices it doesn’t apply to. In addition, personally I don’t value AI summarization and similar features within VoiceDream at all. I can always use my favorite AI chat interface to summarize any document easily and with full control. The unique feature I use VoiceDream for is to read the original or summarized doc to me *with a great, easy to use, bug-free* interface, and that is where the devs should maintain their laser focus IMO.
Ehhh
An absolutely ungodly amount of call to actions before you can even begin to give the product an actual run through. If you misclick anywhere, you can no longer access certain offers or options, and truthfully this userflow has been so frustrating that it shows that the application is built by marketing and not engineering, and I can’t trust it to deliver as a result.
Bug
When reading an EPUB file aloud, it often keeps looping the same section of content over and over, as if it were a bug. This didn’t happen before.

When I scan a book it doesn’t do a good job getting the words correct a lot of mistakes which is super frustrating
Accessibility degrading steadily
This app was the gold standard in versatility and elegant interface for reading with screen reader. New features such as AI summary are still not accessible although it was reported to developers. It still remains a powerful app compatible with many text and audio formats, but it feels like focus of developers may be less a-tuned to accessibility considerations. Still one of my main reading apps for taking notes while reading.
A true Study Aid

Whew!!!!!
Fix the bugs!!! The app shuts down for no reason. It speeds up or slows down, it turns off and it takes days to upload books. Most importantly tho my books are starting to disappear 🤦🏽♀️ 08.11.26 For some reason all of my covers are reverting to a standard VDR cover 😡 the standard cover books go to the top of the list hundreds at a time. I’ve created a folder to put these books in just to get them out of the way, however every few days they come back. In the middle of reading my book will stop I press play and it reads back a few sentences. When I go back to my home page all those books are right back again. I’ve moved 1300 books that have lost their covers. This is why I cancelled my subscription.
I have loved this app for years but recently
Since they added AI voices and AI features into the app, even though I’m not using them, using Voice Dream makes my phone heat up intensely and eats through my battery very quickly (and sometimes it’s so hot that it won’t let me charge the battery until it cools down - and this is on a iphone that’s only about a year old! I can’t imagine how it would work if it were any older. I’ve tried several apps, I came back to this one, but I’m going to have to move on if they don’t fix this soon.
Sleazy
I was offered a 7-day trial. That was mysteriously changed to 3-days. Then I see a note that says you must cancel 24-hours before your subscription expires. I like the app, but that is simply to sleazy. I’ll find another solution.
Defining a word is one tap away too many
When reading books, it’s fairly common to learn about new words. Now you can get the definition by tap and holding on to the word, “tapping >”, the tapping define. The define shouldn’t be on the second set of commands. The quoted step should be eliminated to define a word which is a very common and important task when reading a book. Currently, the first level commands include copy, four highlighting colors, note, and bookmark. The highlighting colors are probably important for students, but for book readers, the define should be there as well.
Love it- Voice Dream
I have been using this app for years, and I appreciate it. I like all the different aspects of it—the apps. I have Asperger‘s. I have a high IQ, but still, I need somebody to read something to me to understand what’s being read fully. it’s been one of the best investments I made myself. They got me to college and even working all these years. All my employers will install it as a see even dictation is better. I also use Grammarly.

Mostly good, but voice selection is quite confusing
First of all, I would like to thank you for develope this app. At the beginning, the voice selection is very good: a clear button for playing sample and downloading. It vividly divides into category like American English, British English. But now, the voice selection is mixed up. I have to scroll a long list to find the voice I want.
Disappointed
Overpriced ai voices. Only one tolerable. Selling this as A.D.A. Is a stretch. Free programs using artists exist. Uninstalling.

There is no advantage to getting the AI voices.
Vision and great resources
This is one of them. This program on my phone got me through a very rigorous graduate level program with honors. I was able to listen to all textbooks and articles with ease. I could adapt the speed the color. The print.

I’ve tried to get in touch with these people and they don’t respond. It’s not working and I paid for it. Customer service is not taking care of business
Great app.
Would be perfect if I could have output based on the regex string for the pronunciation replacement. Often code variables are spelled likeThis and I can identify them all with regex, but I cannot add a space in the middle.
Unfortunately
I really tried and would have bought it at a reasonable price, but 100$ per year doesn’t make sense to me when considering the free options available in iOS, PDF Expert, Speech Central etc. The Pro voices are not that much better.

Beats Speechify for academics!
Got this to read my research material for my PhD. Was working full time and taking care of my family. Voice dream’s bookmark and highlight feature allows you to tab sentences while on a run or a drive and lets you export only your tabbed text into a single txt file with the push of a button! Saves me weeks of time writing notes, trying to find them for papers/dissertation, etc. Phenomenal app!
This app has gone downhill
What happened to this app? I used it a few months ago and it worked great. It still sounded a bit robotic, but it wasn’t terrible. Obviously not perfect; but good enough to listen to. Well, I signed back up and paid for a year and it’s horrible now. For example, it pronounces the word “I’ve” as “ivy” and says the word “period” when there is a period present. And now, the integrated kindle app stopped working. I’m really frustrated and disappointed.
Fuming
Over the years I spent a small fortune on alternative voices for this app. I always buy the full version of apps I use to support developers. Now I find my all purchases are wasted and I'm expected to pay an annual subscription. No customer support link easily available.
Mutes all other audio in start up and language selection is not always right
The app mutes all other apps' audio as soon as it starts up, which can cause awkward silences. The user wants the app to wait until they press play before muting other audio streams, such as music or podcasts. The app's language selection feature is not always user-friendly, as it defaults to languages that are not native to the text being read, and there is no easy way to preselect preferred second and third languages that we often use.
Average
If you are interested in the phrase 200+ premium voices, then keep in mind that this is the sum of voices in all languages, not in your preferred language. In addition, the quality of the voices is not much different from the pre-installed ones in iOS. If you were hoping to finally enjoy good UX and pay at least for this, then the UX level is about average.
Just my experience
I’ve struggled with reading my entire life — in school, trying to keep up with classmates, and later at work, trying not to fall behind my colleagues. I tried so many reading apps over the years. Most were expensive, and even then, they still couldn’t do what I needed. Voice Dream changed everything for me. The first time I used it, it felt like a locked door finally opened. Suddenly, I had access to a world that had always felt out of reach. This app has become part of my daily life, and I genuinely love it. If you have a learning disability related to reading or writing, I highly recommend giving Voice Dream a try. It made a real difference for me, and it might do the same for you.

Well done for listening to your customers
I was ready to walk away as the subscription costs were unjustifiable and I felt betrayed as others have pointed out. Well done to the developers for listening and retaining so manny customers by realising your mistake.
Voices too choppy & robotic still
Perfect app, these just still need work on the voices. It’s not easy to understand the robotic tone and also it can’t decipher what is meant to be read or not from a textbook (page numbers, etc.)
Solid but not spectacular
For years this was a fantastic app. I respect the current owners for trying to introduce more features but there's a bit of reinventing the wheel going on at times which stymies accessibility. Still worth having as a solid book reader and audio file player, but for the subscription price tag I expect to see rock solid accessibility throughout and that hasn't been the case at all times.

I’ve used this app for years, I’ve actually lost count for how long. I’ll put out front that part of this review is made out of annoyance. I recently updated the app recently ans that was a mistake. It put the app into an infinite loading loop where the only solution was to reinstall and guess what? With a reinstall it yeeted and deleted the 2000+ books and docs i had saved. I did have it saved to icloud, the smart decision for if something like this happened but the app isnt interested in restoring any of it. The other issue is the voices available. The quality of the voices is about what you would have gotten in 2015 and the “new AI” voices they added... It sounds exactly the same as their old version. Just slighty cleaned up and they sometimes yell at you if there's an exclamation point.

Freezes in MacOS-Cannot Install
The installation stops at the enhanced voices window. And then there is a menu box at the top that says “Type to Speak”. The only way that I could get rid of that is by installing a new MacOS version. I still have not been able to install this application on my Mac computer. I don’t know what’s gonna happen when I try to install Voice Nightmare! Help!
An app you’ll find yourself using daily
I purchased this app a number of years ago for a flat price. It was well worth the cost for an app that I’ve found myself requiring in order to access print materials. I’m a legally blind user and this app allows me to access print materials from multiple sources including Cela and Bookshare but also places like project Gutenberg and cloud storage (depending on which accounts you have/use). I have also relied on using the scanner app to scan in print books I wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. This app quickly turned into my go to for reading, it was wasy to learn how to use and had all the right settings to customize it to my needs. Being able to access a library of voices also made the app desirable over other free or lower cost options. When the app changed hands ownership wise, they had initially made the decision to move to a subscription model and told all users they would have to pay a yearly fee to continue using the app. Even those who had purchased a lifetime subscription. After pushback from the community, the developers decided to backtrack on that decision and continue to allow those who had purchased the app for a “lifetime subscription”, to continue to use its current features at no additional cost. My rating is down one star because of how this was handled. We should have never had to pushback against the owners, for something that apple says they don’t allow. This was an extreme breach of trust, and will continue to have an affect on those impacted. This was a purely capitalist driven move that didn’t consider the marginalized people that would be heavily impacted, so for this they lose one star. Whether we can trust this company going forward is up in the air. They will have to ultimately show that we can trust than again. My one suggestion for the app when jr comes to subscription vs no subscription is that the developers offer a pay model such as this: -legacy “lifetime subscription” users get the app and its current features at mo additional cost, including any basic updates to maintain usability of current features -yearly subscription model for any new users, which gets you all the bells and whistles of any new features -and a one-time fee option to upgrade to a more current “lifetime subscription” at a cost of around $500- $700 CAD, that will include all the bells and whistles going forward -and offering an organization level subscription where you could work with organizations like CELA, to provide them a subscription at the organization level (that would be a larger yearly or monthly fee), that would give all of CELA’s users (or whatever organization) a voice dream account -also, offering a scholarship option for those most in need. There could be an application that assessed whether someone was on government assistance and/or was living below the poverty line, and a space where they were able to write about their need for the app (ie. no access to other technology reading). Qualifying ppl (a certain amount each year), would be given a one year free or subsidized subscription. A subsidized option might be offering a sliding scale subscription where someone could chose to get it free, or pay $15, $30, $50, or $75 CAD for a one year subscription, and reapplying each year they are in need. A sliding scale option allows patrons to pay what they feel they are able to, while allowing those most in need to access the app for free, and those who can pay full price to do so. In a model such as this one, this allows the most amount of people to access the app. It prioritizes the patrons and reimagines what equitable access to technology looks like under a capitalist regime. You still make money, maybe not quite as much, but you’re being paid for your work, while also considering others needs. A move like this, would get you five stars, just saying. Ultimately though, without this app, my access to print literature would seriously be impacted. It would not only impact my life but also my ability to access education and work. I use this app across all areas of my life. It also ensures I’m able to access those print books i pick up at my local library (there’s another partnership for you, libraries). I do recommend this app as one of the best text to speech apps available on the market, and the most accessible to those who are blind and visually impaired.
Should be more
Should be more than a educational app I should be able to connect Kindle or any e-book app to this app but high and unfortunately can’t and you should be able to use this without a subscription because not everybody likes them if I could give one and a half stars I would so you get two stars but half that star should be taken away

Love this app but I just spent a fortune on a uni text book, then more to convert and unlock the thing to PDF and because there’s no contents when I import it, this app becomes useless because it will only read from the beginning of the book and not the page/chapter I need. Whhhyyyy 😫

I paid for lifetime access prior to the integration of AI and now the voice I paid for does not work anymore. Waste of money
Best all round
I have been using this app for about 10 years and it is easily one of the best, most stable and most used apps of mine. A steal at the price. Integrates brilliantly with Pocket (getpocket.com). You can also copy the clipboard (that is any text) into a a VoiceStream document ... you can then listen to this with your favourite voice. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!
Disappointed
When I bought this App a few years ago I was happy to pay the one time fee (cost) to use it. The App itself is good but the politics of getting rich , pisses me off. Now - as of 2024 this developer wants to recharge its customers per year instead of the one time cost. It’s like buying a car last year , but now the car dealership wants to put you on a lease program where it’s a monthly payment plan. That’s exactly what this developer is doing to us customers who already paid for this App. There should be a grandfather clause ; but of course, App’s are the Wild West where they can do whatever they want. Apps should be highly regulated ; such a shame! I already paid for this App - so why am I forced on the monthly payment plan. They say,” We have to be fair to everyone “ LOL ! How about being fair to the customers who support you in the beginning!
Just ok - could be better
This works ‘ok’ but the app developers have really put out something pretty rough and ready with some annoying quirks. They should be easy to fix these days but clearly the app developers can’t be bothered. Like: it recognises full stops but not line breaks so headlines or titles run into the opening line. Sometimes it recognises ‘&’ as ‘and’ and sometimes it says ‘ampersand’ which is really distracting. It also doesn’t recognise acronyms - even common ones - and attempts to pronounce them like words. Finally, common abbreviations are not recognised in context so ‘St.’ is always pronounced as ‘Saint’, never ‘Street’. These are little annoying things that really could be fixed easily if the app developers took pride in their product.
