Restore purchase on IOS 26 does not work!

I have been using a 1st gen iPad for this app which runs IOS 16 or 17. I recently bought an iPad Air 3 and an iPad Air 5, both running IOS 26. This is the only app that will not allow me to restore purchases I have made so I can used my paid apps on the more recent devices. I even tried to pay for the Feature Bundle on the newer models. It says “You cannot redownload this feature” (can’t remember exact wording). I have Fender notion on my Samsung Galaxy S8 Ultra tablet and my S23 Ultra. No issues with restore purchase. If Dorico had an Android app, I would just pay the pricier one-time purchase. Will someone please fix this? I had Notion since it was called Notion for iPad and made the user pay for EVERY extra feature.

Good but with longstanding issues

Sound sets are nice, especially the strings. Have used this app for around 6 years and it covers a lot of bases for a mobile app. Intuitive for a composing app. There is however a large stability issue and I cannot recommend the app while it exists: Adding new measures in the middle of a score will sometimes break the playback. The added measures do not show up in the score. The playback cursor gets all glitchy in the spaces where those new measures would be, sometimes moving way too slow and other times teleporting. The music still sounds normal when this happens, but it accounts for the “added” measures, causing a huge pause in the middle of the piece that you can’t do anything about. It is like a certain amount of space in the score just gets corrupted. You cannot undo this once it happens, and I have had to manually copy and paste everything into a new document if I wish to keep editing the music or listen to the playback. This is extremely frustrating, especially when it happens with larger projects. A huge timewaste that gets in the way of productivity. The chance of it happening seems random but often enough that it does not feel stable. 4 times within the last month or so, and I have had this issue for at least a few years. Also copy and paste doesn’t always work, which can compound with the above issue.

The best app out of many for me

I am a dedicated Fender Notion app user who has been using Notion long before Fender acquired it. Given that I am not a keyboard player or a stylus user, I find Notion to be the most user friendly notation app of my 4 paid sheet music notation apps. It also seems to export the cleanest PDFs out of all my apps. I also discovered that Fender Notion’s developers genuinely listen to users like me in terms of feedback and reviews. I don’t care what the review score of this app says, I will remain a dedicated Fender Notion app because it’s THE BEST app for me.

I didn’t expect this app to get any worse

I wasn’t expecting much from a mobile notation software, so I will take some of the blame for entrusting too much to this app. But oh my goodness, they have a limit on registering your account… don’t buy the bundle they have advertised because it really doesn’t do much, the pen tool is very inaccurate and a headache to work with. You spend $16 on a pack with mediocre sound libraries (again don’t expect much from a mobile app) and you only get like 3 times of signing back into your account before they tell you the limit is exceeded. Joke of a company and joke of a piano app. This makes Flat look good.

Pros and cons of Notion

There are benefits to the program like it is easy to navigate, it is IPad friendly, and has good sound quality. The things that should be improved is that instruments should be of a wider variety, for example; I wish there was percussion staffs that are 5 lines without it being drum set, and that percussion notation is wrong like Flam should not be written as a word in the staff, it is like writing fingerings instead of accidentals. There are other things that I could harp about but I just think the producers should check some of their tools and compare them to other popular programs like MuseScore and Dorico and see what they should change. Other than that, I don’t plan to stop using this program.

I really like this app!

This app is great, but some things are missing. For example, there could be more instruments like a simple wind chime. I usually use the wind chime in most pieces but here, I have to use another instrument. Also, could you maybe add some features like playing second time only for repeats? That would help a lot! Also, speaking of repeats, could you guys also add separate dynamics for each repeats pass? That would also be nice! Thanks for reading! Hope you can add the features I mentioned!

Chord Diagrams Editing? New Sub model to use Apple Pencil!

First I’d like say, I’ve tried all the music notation apps out for iPad, and have found Dorico to be the most full feature but Notion to be the easiest interface to use. I’ve used this app on and off for a long time; since it came out around 10 years I guess. There was a pretty big update maybe 3 years ago. The Updates have been slow to come. And for an app that calls itself “Music & Tab it’s a shame it can’t do the basic chord diagram editing, yet! Yes, you can (only see) guitar diagrams ( but can use ukulele w/in a guitar window?) but the library is still fairly limited. Again, no GUITAR DIAGRAM EDITING option like Dorico offers. Bye, Dorico’s monthly subscription is $4.99! As well, In the past we could use Apple Pencil, free of charge now you have to shell out $19.99 per month. Sure they FINALLY fixed the Export & Transfer features, layout and formatting & added cross platform options. But I don’t need the other options of the Studio Pro (formerly Fender Studio) subscription, which includes: DAW & hardware options... just want to use the Apple Pencil but $20 bucks a month. Any chance you guys can offer a basic version of the app for lead sheet writing with Apple Pencil usage, for those of us wanting to bang out music for rock band.. to Jazz quintet for less $, because I just can’t justify the per/yearly cost for my needs for things I won’t use now or mostly likely not in the future.

Fender says same app, just improved. I say, ‘no’.

I have become a big fan of Notion on Mac and iOS (the Presonus version) over time. The Fender version on Mac no longer allows chord diagram editing, since the chords no longer appear on the fretboard tool (very ironic as Fender is a guitar company). Also, on the desktop version, I do not like that they have essentially ‘hidden’ all the settings (ie. File, Edit, View, Tools, Score) that used to be in the Mac toolbar, by putting them in an iOS submenu; which may be efficient on a handheld device, but when scoring a piece on a desktop it makes sense to have the desktop layout with all options readily available. Additionally, Fender seems to be transitioning to a subscription service, and opposed to the standard model of buying the features, software, and sound banks and receiving updates. In summary, the Presonus Notion is better on desktop, and if it is no longer available - then Musescore easily becomes the better choice for no cost at all. At this point Musescore is already better, but I prefer(ed) Notion for its smoother interoperability between the iPad and Mac desktop. Aditionally, there are a number of other full-featured score editors available. Fender - don’t screw up this software like Gibson did with Cakewalk Studio!

I swipe up, not even exiting the app, just to look at something, and suddenly, I can’t place notes anymore. I have to go in and out and in and out constantly. Variety of instruments. That may be one of the only good things, and the biggest thing, compared to what I used before. Codas don’t work. I can’t make it co back to the coda or D.S. Al Coda.

More percussion and instruments plus more

Great app supper amazing I have one issue though theres a lack of percussion instruments I really want like wind chimes and more. Also we need instruments like the alto clarinet which would make a huge impact on the game also we need other instruments that are able to do glissandos like flutes saxs every instrument need to be able to do a fall or a glissando not just jazz instruments that would really help In making fun tunes that would sound really nice also can we have more sound effects? I feel like the instruments should have a setting in tools where you can add a sound effect like shhhh or haaa and like claps, stomps a way to blow into the instrument without making sound like a wind sound effect. Other than that the game is really great and awesome hope the developers can see this and try to make it like that I known programming the instruments is hard but hope you can pull through.

Fender eliminated the ability to make custom fret diagrams!

Until recently it was possible to make custom chord diagrams, but Fender has nerfed that useful feature. Interestingly, they ‘bumped’ a 4 year old review (see: ‘Chord diagrams Editing? New Sub model…’) to make it seem like it wasn’t possible. Removing features we paid for is unethical at best. I have been using this app for several years, and now have moved over to the lifetime purchase of Dorico - which is a much better app. Ditch Fender, they are getting too greedy with their new subscription scheme.

Good intentions

This update has its heart in the right place - I think it has introduced an improved user interface. However, it is still very buggy. I have wasted hours (literally) trying to perform simple operations on an iPad. Perhaps I have not understood the procedures. Text is particularly difficult to manage. Try selecting a piece of text to move it or to change its style and you will see how hit and miss it is. Altering the font is, incidentally, impossible - the new font shows until you complete the action, and then disappears again. Text in boxes was pretty difficult to manage in the old version, but is now even more so - and the box has a will of its own. The Selection tool serves competing functions - tapping to deselect other tools, tapping to launch the marquee, tapping to select notes and text, tapping to insert the cursor, and tapping to edit text - any or none of which might happen when you want. Putting in staccato or other such dynamic marks is at present quite impossible - the marks appear in places other than those intended, often not even associated with notes, and if you have not noticed these stray dots in time to Undo, they cannot be erased. The Context menu repeatedly pops up unbidden. I have consulted the User Guide and watched some of the video guides, but there must be something fairly fundamental about what order to do things in that I have not been able to grasp. It took me a long time to learn how to import a MusicXML file to Notion Mobile. The User Guide says you can open a MusicXML file from the Notion Start Page using the File Browser. Yet it seems that only Notion format files are actionable in this browser. But if you use Apple's Files app to locate the file, you can open it in Notion Mobile by tapping on it. From a mail app, you can do this using 'Open In' Notion. Then if you close the page, the score disappears. What you need to do whilst the score is open, is to export it to your preferred storage location in Notion format. If instead you make alterations to it before closing it, it is saved locally to the iPad as a Notion file, even though in Settings I have elected the iCloud as my default storage location. Reviewing my iCloud contents by opening the files takes ages, as each time I am obliged to re-navigate the folders. More generally, file handling is probably very versatile, but it is not intuitive to everyone and deserves fuller treatment in the User Guide.

I Keep Coming Back

I have used varying notation software on both a desktop and on iPad over the years. I’ve used both types (desk top and iPad versions of many products trying to be as mobile as possible. That wasn’t truly a possible for a long time. Because of this, I have tried many if not most of the music notation software out there. Say what you will, but I keep coming back to Notion for its ease of use, simplicity and straight forward tools. It makes sense to me how they have structured and organized the tools. It plays well with other DAWs when I need to move my scores to other platforms for recording work. I can even use Notion in conjunction with other DAWs. It has printed full orchestral scores and their parts for me as accurately as I’ve prepared the scores. It has even alerted me to times when I haven’t prepared them well, allowing me to catch issues before printing. I know there are other names out there that people feel are the “go to” notation software. I’ve used them and wasn’t impressed. But honestly, no one has ever complained about my work in Notion, or even known I used it instead of something else, and for that I’m grateful to this software for letting me focus on the music instead of the “how to’s” of getting music into a physical space that I can share with others. All software can use or need updates and improvements. I look forward to the new updates coming in the next version of Notion. Notion is a workhorse that I won’t be dropping any time soon. Thanks, Notion. Keep up the great work. I don’t really leave reviews but I actually wanted to. My two cents. :)

Unfortunate

I used to use Notion for all of my compositions, since I didn’t have it backed up to the cloud when they completely overhauled and updated the app (entirely my fault) I lost years of music that I wrote. Now that I’ve given it another shot, I was mostly complete with a piece and I go back to finish it and it’s gone, very much a downgrade from the notion I was familiar with. I appreciated the simplified tool bar for ease of use but also feel the narrowed scope and limited options with my familiarity stuck behind a pay wall. I am extremely saddened with the turn that notion has taken and that most of the unfriendliness of using the app hadn’t been changed at all from the old version, arguably worse than the old version.
