Leo is the Best
If you know you know.
Not usable anymore
I’ve used it for years and was fine with the addition of ads, but they’ve reached a point where the app is no longer practical to use properly. I deleted it.

ok, aber nur bedingt geeignet
Wer Vokabeln nachschlagen möchte, der ist hier genau richtig. Hierfür gefällt mir die App sehr gut. Wer aber systematisch und effizient Vokabeln lernen möchte, sollte das mit einem anderen Lerntool machen. Der integrierte Vokabeltrainer ist nett bleibt aber im Vergleich zu z.B. phase6 weit zurück.
Awesome tool
Absolutely enjoy using LEO and learning more of the German language. I have this app open whenever I read my German novels or news!

Failed Update
“Update” ruined the app, once great Dictionary no longer works, so it’s useless.
LEO ist toll!
Ich nutze LEO schon viel länger, als es die App gibt. Es ist eine großartige Sache! Jetzt hat die App keine Verbindung zum Server mehr, und mir wird bewusst, wie oft ich sie tatsächlich nutze. Ich wollte eigentlich auf die werbefreie Version umsteigen, aber ich warte damit noch ein bisschen, bis die App wieder läuft. Auf jeden Fall ein großes Dankeschön an die Betreiber*innen für Jahrzehnte an tollem Service!!
Ads introduction is unacceptable and not aligned with market
I used this app and loved it. That’s why I give it 2 star. Then, in the era of AI, they introduced ads. Well, I am uninstalling now because AI can do the same job and I am not pushed to watch ads. Really wanted to give 0 stars for this action. If you could, you’d push an ad down users throat.
Ads are getting crazy
I love this app and have used it for years to translate German words on the fly. I know that ads are necessary for collecting revenue and supporting updates, but I don't think sitting through a 15 second ad when I'm trying to translate a word is a great experience.

Why Extreme ads now?
I used this app for 13 years and now they decided to use ads that just appear out of nowhere. Why do you play these ad videos? I have to stop using the app now since auto-video-ads are extremely annoying, shady and cause me to forget what word to look up. Thanks that you do not care about your customers!
Bitte zusätzliche Lern-Funktion
Finde die App soweit gut. Würde mir aber wünschen, dass die gesuchten Wörter automatisch in eine Lernkartei eingefügt werden die ich lernen kann. Leo „wrapped“ quasi

great free vocabulary trainer
the latest update that records which vocabulary words you got wrong/right in order to practice them better is a great addition. But the recent update also made offline vocabulary training impossible, such that I can’t really use the program any more in classrooms with no internet signal or long train/plane rides. Can developers make it so offline training is still possible? thank you. also, when using the new vocabulary trainer - it is noticeably slower - as it slowly syncs with your online database on every single button press.
Needs just one little feature more
Totally love this app, it is sooo useful! Just one small feature suggestion: allow to switch between favorite language pairs by tapping the flag symbols in the top center. I use Leo for various languages and switching from one to another is a bit tedious.
Loss of functionality
The spinner mostly just spins and spins without returning a result. The full page ads when it does work are simply too annoying. Maybe the spinner that keeps spinning is the app trying to load an ad that loads too slowly?
Update
Please bring back examples
I agree with a previous reviewer about the examples. I don’t know where to find them. I’ve tried the links below the word but those have too much info and not easy to understand examples.
Haven’t experienced many problems
Ive been using this app for my language classes for about 5 years now and have always liked it a lot
They ruined if
I used the website for years and then the app. Loved it. Recommended it to everyone. Used it countless times per day for multiple languages, though mostly German-English. I have sadly just deleted it. This app is just an ad blaster now. It is not usable. I cannot look up a word without a video ad that I cannot close out taking over my screen. The noise and intrusion is unforgivable. Some ads here and there would be understandable but this has simply voided all functionality. I give up. I will not go back to using the site in my browser either. I will just turn entirely to another tool. Sorely let down after many years of praising and relying on Leo. Goodbye former friend, you used to be so good.
Ich vermisse die Verbtabellen!
Neues design viel unübersichtlicher, und schmerzlich vermisse ich die Verbtabellen!
Used for years, deleted today
I started noticing annoying ads a while ago but still used the app from time to time. Yesterday and today, stuff just stopped completely loading, so I decided to just find an alternative…
Meh
I liked the previous version better for its immediate inclusion of examples of the given word in phrases. The new version is clunkier.
Klasse App
Leo ist eine klasse App: schon sehr lange am Start, ein klasse Volabeltrainer mit verschiedenen Angeboten vorgefertigter Vokabelgruppen bestimmter Fachgebiete wir sich selbst erstellten Listen neuer Vokabeln. Alle Vokabel-Sets können gezielt und erfolgsabhängig trainiert werden. Sehr empfehlenswert!
Stupid Long frequent ads
Hate this. Going to Google translate instead.

Fullscreen ads!
I don’t need an app that shows a 5-10 second fullscreen ad when I search for a word!
Will be looking for a new app
Before the update it was my go-to app for Spanish and German. After this update I’ll have to find something new
Excellent
Any word I forget, simply don’t know, or just can’t think of or if I need a similar word for it in a different language this app has it
This app chooses to preserve racism
When a learner dictionary presents racist language in general search results and relies on warnings to contextualize it, this is not a neutral act but an editorial decision. Documentation can exist without making harmful terms discoverable as usable translations. Learner-facing tools should prioritize user safety and pedagogy over “completeness,” especially when accurate, non-offensive alternatives are available.

Forced popup ads destroy user experience
Ads turn into unskippable popups. Looking up a word that takes 5 seconds may require you to watch a 30 second ad first. They also don't improve the search on the app to bring it to the same level of the web-based version. I love how you get results for the dictionary and forum at the same time. In the app it requires a tedious new search for each section.
I liked it better before!
It was easier to navigate before the update.
Great resource for those learning German
My German professor suggested this app, sehr geschikt!
Werbung
Ich bin von der Werbemenge total enttäuscht. Man muss auf Übersetzung ca. 10-20 Sekunden warten. Das ist irre, besonders wenn ich sie dringend brauche.
Toller Übersetzer !
Super App, mein go to Wörterbuch. Phonetik und Synonyme wären eine tolle ergänzung :)
Fallen out of love with Leo
This used to be a go-to website and app for me, but I’ve grown weary of the opportunistic subscription corner it backs you into with a relentless pop-up threat of ads and tracking. Every single time I open the app, and within use a single of it, I am hit with what feel like little shameful penalties for not allowing a developer to capitalize on what used to be free and certainly has not been improved since it was free. I’ve since learned to use other resources that function just as well that are still free of cost and visual noise, and I no longer recommend Leo as readily to my students and other language learners. I see many others share my sentiments. It’s a shame.

Extremely helpful phrases
This dictionary has extremely helpful phrases. At least in English/Deutsch.
Deleted it Today
Seeing some Ads if fine for me, since the App is free. But today they blocked the result with a very long advertisement Video, robbing me of my precious mobile data volume and time. So today I deleted this app. Will use build in translation apps or translation from google. How greedy and stupid can one company become...
Bitte Japanisch
Ich finde die App super aber ich fände es gut wenn Japanisch dabei wär:)
Terrible since latest update
I loved this app and have been using it for the longest, but since the recent update I’ll have to look elsewhere. Some words I can’t even find anymore, some don’t make any sense at all. How does that happen?? Very disappointed!
Good but need offline option
Using LEO for over a decade but please add offline feature for dictionaries. Glad to pay for it!
