Great site for NZ news but terrible app update
The mobile iPhone version loads very slowly - I’m sorry to see this as it’s a great content location for NZ news but as it stands close to unusable.
Better 10 years ago than today
Stuff used to be my go to news app. But now many of the good articles are stuck behind a paywall. Also the design of the app and website are horrible. Frequently difficult to read formats, poor colour choices and all round buggy app. I deleted the app earlier this year as I’d stopped using it because it was so bad!
Great NZ News site but…
When I attempt to open a Stuff story from my home screen , it simply opens the app instead of going directly to said story . Please fix this issue. The app is great for the most part.
poor user experience
No comment about the journalism, stuff are my main go to for NZ News. However, the app UX is awful. Incredibly sensitive to scrolling be interpreted as move to next article. Makes it incredibly frustrating to read longer articles. Also no Dark mode.
Very glitchy app
I find this app to be very glitchy. Most videos keep pausing during play (a 1 minute video can be a frustrating watch with a pause every 5 seconds!). Some articles load from a browser causing a distributive experience. The swipe feature is very sensitive. Could be a lot better.
My connection to home
I live in the States and read Stuff every day to keep up with home..
This app crashes
Really bad when you are in the middle of an artyand the app crashes. Restart, find the article again, recommence reading and down it goes again. Not good enough STUFF.
True news app
Full news available without the need to “subscribe” or pay. Comments on the website and the app fully integrated.
Not user friendly
Since upgrade if you tap on a notification, most of the time it will open the app on the last read article, not the notification.
Not so good since the rebranding
The Stuff App was reliable and a good news source until recently it went through a rebranding. Since then it glitches and locks up every time I use it. Please fix it so it can operate reliably like it used to.
Excellent app for news
Thoroughly recommend this app. This news source is NZ best resource for, up to date, clear and unbiased NEWS.
Screen Flashes
Terrible app for my iPad, when loading a story 50% of the time the screen flashes repeatedly and can only be returned to normal by closing the app. Sent feedback and provided all the info that the “Stuffed” IT person required but that was weeks ago, no reply, no resolution. Poor customer support. DELETE……..
Great site for wanna be kiwis like us.
We traveled to NZ for as little as three weeks and as long as seven months each year from 2001 to 2014. My (Scottish) clan held its international gathering in Dunedin in 2008. We have been to more cities and towns than any kiwis we know. We enjoy staying in touch with our cousins through the news as reported by Stuff. May they live long and prosper.
Poor update
The new version of the app is painfully slow
New app is a punish
When I click to go back after reading an article the app goes in to a purple screen of death. Have to close the app and open it again.
Journalism as it should be!
We traveled to New Zealand last year and couldn’t have been more impressed with your people and the country in general. The articles in Stuff are factual and unbiased. As many others have stated in their reviews, much less negative reporting. Keep up the good work. We hope to be back to New Zealand soon, but I’m the meantime your stories remind us of why it is such a great place to live.
Pop ups and ads
The app is now clogged with invasive ads and pop ups. It’s a comparable experience to a low quality tabloid site, not what I expect from NZ’s premier news outlet.
Great App
Love getting my NZ news this way. Hate the pop up ad I get 80% of the time when I open. But I understand the commercial reasons.
Ridiculous change to the app
I can no I longer find local news for my region and it is hard to navigate now as it keeps going to the menu page. Why fix when it’s not broken!
Why do stories open in a browser now?
This makes the app very frustrating to use now and just clogs up my browser. What’s the point of making an app if it just defaults to a browser? Weird.
LOVE THIS APP
Being a Kiwi from Tauranga, New Zealand, living in Los Angeles for over 40yrs STUFF and SUNLIVE keeps me updated on news from home. I always find something interesting to read and often follow links to other articles. Also subscribe to NZ Herald but in my opinion STUFF covers more of the bases for me.
Horrible
New update is absolutely terrible to navigate and makes it almost impossible to find real news. Not surprising from a ‘news’ app that has become the online equivalent of the Project.
Easy and light
Easy to navigate. Doesn't take up too much space or update too often.
Poor performance
Since upgrading to the new version of the app in the US, the app is very flow running on IOS 17.2.1. The pages are not loading fully and controls do not seem to be functioning properly. I was not able to get onto the support page. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max
Frustrating, too many ads and stories up too long (weeks)
This used to be a great app, you could open it and get a concise view of headlines. Now there are multiple ad boxes of the same ad, plus stories that have been on the app for an extended period of time. Stuff is a daily newspaper so please only have current material on the opening page. In addition, please remove the unrelated photos and headlines from stories. Today’s story re the hokitika river drowning had an entirety inappropriate “push” photo and tag about some regional kids event. Clean this up please. Current stories and only the story the reader opts to open. It is a wonderful resource but unpleasant to use currently.
Best news
I live in the USA and we are soon going to expatriate to NZ. I read news every day so I decided to start reading news from both countries in preparation. Now STUFF is my primary news source. USA news is depressing and the comments people leave are not supportive. On STUFF the articles seem balanced, informative, and relevant. I like the simplicity of the app. Works great for my iPhone 8. No annoying popup ads or push notifications. Love it.
Awful. Close to worst in class?
It’s genuinely unusable on my phone. Constantly restarts, swiping back takes you to another story not the menu. The first page and menu take an age to load. The embedded ads in the stories refresh whilst reading which moves the page up or down. I’ve deleted it from my phone, hopefully a proper developer sorts it soon as I did enjoy reading the NZ news.
Variety
I find stories I don't find elsewhere. C
Your fonts massive
I can’t use your new app. I use a mid size font on my phone, but the font of your new app is massive. I can’t change it. If it doesn’t change, I’ll have to delete the app. Can’t look at the rest. I can’t get past the massive font!
Real Quality News App let down by functionality
My go to news app for both local & international news. It's just a huge shame that it takes several attempts before it opens. About every 2 weeks, it will not open at all & I have to delete it off my iPad & go through the cycle of download/install.
Great way to feel close!
I worked at the Hutt Hospital 4 times and my husband got a PhD from the University of Canterbury in Chch. We love NZ, and Stuff keeps me up to date!
Lightweight reporting
The political bias lets the site down, and most articles have no way to respond. Annoying
NZ in my iPod.
A great way to keep up to speed with what is happening in New Zealand as an ex-pat in the UK. Would have been 5 stars, but of late there have been a number of grammatical errors that are a personal bugbear.
Opinion and agenda more than news
Somewhat biased in reporting. Also many articles are opinion masquerading as news.
It is an app
News app - does its job
Best source of news in the US
As an expat Saffer, I prefer using Stuff as my #1 source for News. Why? Because: The US can't stop talking about US stuff. SA news is just crime and suffering. Stuff has a good balance covering everything and everybody Keep it up NZ!!
Very glitchy
Since they have done an update the app is very glitchy and navigation feels slower and more stressful. Even the banners now rotate very fast and makes it feel like it’s constantly loading instead of pre loading like other some other news apps.
Good stable app
Nice little app that keeps improving
Ad redirects are terrible UX
As others have said in recent years reviews, the app is okay, but the way it redirects you out of the app to an ad in a browser is obnoxious and terrible UX. Nothing against ads, however taking the user OUT of your app when they are scrolling is just bad. Bad for the user and bad for Fairfax.
Sick of rate request on startup
OK, usually up to date. Crashes a little too often.
Easy News
It has an easy UI and keeps me up to date on Kiwi news.
NOT IOS FRIENDLY - GETTING WORSE
I use to enjoy reading Stuff from the app. Since you changed the layout its progressively becoming more glitchy, less user friendly and you cant even make comments anymore. For the last week when we click on a story only half of its there. You know the old saying, its its not broken…..yeah it wasnt broken, now it is.
My GoTo News Source for Home
I rely on Stuff to keep me up to date with what is happening in NZ, especially as local newspapers for places like Wellington and Auckland, as well as the NZ Herald are terrible to read on the iPad. I've dropped a star from my rating, however, as I've found there is an annoying problem with photo spreads on the latest iPad version (I've no idea if it also affects the iPhone version). When checking gallery photos on a story, the photos open weird in landscape mode, and descriptions will not load with each photo, yet if the iPad is turned to portrait mode, the descriptions load, but in landscape form, making it impossible to read. Until this issue is corrected, the rating will remain at four stars.
Some issues with adds
Whenever I start the app or go to a different section, it opens up a link like I clicked on one of the adds. I'm not touching anything, but it automatically takes me to the link.
Great app
Sometimes slow to load but overall very informative
NZ rocks❤️
I live in the USA but I hope to visit New Zealand some day. I love to read about New Zealand I want to see all their awesome animals and birds especially the Spokesbird Sirocco🌟.
Fixed nothing, app won’t even load
The app developers at Stuff never manage to do anything except stuff this app. Every single update makes it worse and less compatible. The latest release won’t even run at all. On opening all you get is a white screen with Oops! Something went wrong Return to homepage, and a link that of course doesn’t work either. You can’t do anything with it except kill the app from memory and delete it. That’s literally all you can do with this app from Stuff - delete it. ZERO stars
News!!
Excellent news source; buggered we're unable to view the comments, which are nice at times/annoying at others/provide a good laugh.
Good but frustrating
I like this app well enough but stopped using it when it started opening the App Store and sending me to the sponsor's apps, usually games, as I'm trying to read stories. Very annoying.
Functionality
Would be better if you could bypass the front headline loading screen on entry as it is a bit over indulgent/unnecessary and slow, and access the local newspapers via the app.
