There is a very big issue with my account that hasn’t been resolved and I’ve been seeking help from the square support team for over a year now . My first big transaction, my account was flagged for review and I was told the funds would be available after review which could take a few business days. I told the customer to call their bank, cancel the transaction and request a refund. The money was then sent back to their bank as per usual with a refund. They then paid me with cash. At a letter date I made a deposit to my square card and the money from the refund was deducted from my deposit. I’ve talked to support multiple times and they refuse to investigate the issue and refuse to return my money. I’ve since stopped using their services. I have documentation of everything !(UPDATE): After contacting the square twitter team I was promptly assisted and the error was fixed, I’ve had no issues otherwise using their services for over 4 years. Will continue patronage for many years to come. Thanks , X team!
Restaurants Beware
Square doesn’t understand the restaurant business. Not only that, in the 3 years I used square, they increased their fees 5 times.

Be aware they will deactivate your account without warning or reason. And when you call and ask why, they still won’t tell you.Highly recommended picking a different processor.
Plug and play POS. Modes for different business types. Learning curve exists for full set up.
Went from a cash only set up(basic register, mom and pop type of bookkeeping). I launched a website and needed to process cards. In doing so we needed to upgrade the brick and mortar register and POS. Was able to take payments using keypad and register screen immediately. I started programming categories and items, figured out option sets etc. These all took some time to learn. I added the scanner, upon doing so deleted all items and reprogrammed all items for the retail side of things by scanning barcodes and importing the items into the system. We also serve drinks on premise, this is where the learning curve was for me. Figuring out how to use the item creating and creating variations and option sets to allow for fast drink input to different running tabs or tables. Making a mode that fit my business set up was … a task. Lots of available features. Many could be extremely valuable for efficiency and productivity but most are behind a paywall unfortunately. I’d advise against buying a bunch of premium features before learning the basics and how they can work for you and what you can improve with the premium features. Overall a total positive upgrade for our business. If you’re considering switching. Do your homework and make sure various add ons are compatible(scanners, printers etc)
Lost Sales Due to Notifications
I had a line of customers in my little shop. All wanted to use cards. As I was trying to check them out, I kept getting notifications to turn on location services. It interfered with two transactions. Both were lost cuz customer left thinking transaction was completed. Lost 100% of funds on both attempted sales. I could not recover the sales. Tried. Gee thanks Square.
Crashed on our busy day.
Normally quite good but it crashed on a busy day and cost us thousands. Even the offline sales wouldn’t work.

Good but needs..
So I really like the layout of this app it’s great and all but the thing is I don’t know how to actually figure out to do the tap to pay on my phone. I asked a guy that worked at an ice cream stand and he said you need a company and that he got a login for it I said how he said the square gave it to him? Like I need help!
Absolutely frustrating
The app is great overall, but there is one absolutely frustrating limitation that seriously affects the booking experience. You cannot add multiple quantities of the same service to one booking. For example, if a bride wants to book makeup or hair services for 5–6 people in her bridal party, she has to create each booking separately from start to finish instead of simply adding multiple services of the same type. The same issue happens when a parent books the same service for herself and her children. Having to repeat the entire booking process several times is time-consuming, inconvenient, and can easily make clients give up before completing their booking. For a beauty business, especially bridal services, this feature is essential. Please consider adding the option to select quantities or multiple clients for the same service within one booking.
Transaction update
In the past few weeks when I updated my square app, I can’t select each transaction and see what fees were charged for running the card. Instead I have a o wait until I get my evening report. This is extremely frustrating and makes bookkeeping more difficult for me.

I don’t like the new skin The letters and buttons are too big, and dark gray is definitely better than black if your background is white
Sudden problem after update
Problem finally resolved after having to go through every procedure possible, but with latest update of app my Square Reader (Generation 1) was suddenly inaccessible to my iPhone. I tried all manner of attempted fixes and finally had to remove hardware from app and pair it once again in the app. Very frustrating— and certainly long after my client had left.

Do you know how much time it then takes to get everything working again normally. I’m really tired of tech companies releasing MVP knowing full well it doesn’t really work properly and leaving all of us to deal with the fallout. Daily.

What was wrong with light mode. Why would you make it all dark I can’t read my bookings the same anymore. Why did you change it there was nothing wrong before. Everything else it great. Just let me choose between light or dark mode.

i just opened this account about two weeks ago - used it for my business this week & my account was deactivated & my funds are automatically held for 60 days but not held with their 2.6% fee that came out of my profits. this place is a joke. contacted The Better Business Bureau - hopefully that will speed up the process of getting my money back from this company. You don't get what they advertise
Been using for 10 years. Upgraded a couple of years ago to restaurant level to get access to QR codes and website. Set it all up and it does not work properly. Spent last 2 years getting online support help as webpage does not allow you to do what it says it does. Online support struggle to make webpage work properly. Then there is virtually no support after 'normal' working hours, so they build systems for hospitality venues but are not available in unsocial hours for support. Anyway, very frustrating and I probably need to look at other options now as Square is limiting growth of my business by not being fit for purpose.

Accepted my client’s payment and then froze my account and won’t let me access funds. Requested a ridiculous amount of paperwork and even when I provided still denied. My business is legitimate and nothing going on except this company stealing my rent money and violating labor laws or something like that

I really like the Square payment app because of its great features and how convenient and easy it is to use. It works well for payments and makes transactions smooth overall. However, I wanted to bring to your attention a few issues. The app does not allow some cards to tap for payment for unknown reasons when using Tap to Pay on iPhone. One major issue is that the app sometimes freezes the iPhone screen completely — nothing can be opened or closed, and even the popup cannot be dismissed. The only solution is to do a hard restart of the phone. Apart from these issues, the app is very useful, and fixing these bugs would make it even better.

No longer satisfied
After over a year of enjoying my service with Square I will be switching over to Vagaro booking system. Firstly, I am a small business owner. I am a hairstylist in a new city building clientele. I chose a plan with square that suited my needs based on my slowly growing business. I recently received their email regarding a mandatory plan upgrade. My once $29/month plan is now $49. Their reasoning is the new update will give me many new features - but they are features I don’t want, I intentionally chose not to sign up for and haven’t needed for a year and a half of using their service. So they are forcing me to pay an extra $240/year. This might not be a lot for a large business but for a small business owner building their business, this not only is a substantial amount of money, it has also created a massive inconvenience in my business as I have to look into setting up my business on a new platform and website. I contacted customer service and was told this was a mandatory change and there are no exceptions. Another company favoring the big businesses, it’s disheartening but I’m happy to go elsewhere to a company that helps small businesses thrive rather than shoving them in a box and insisting they comply.

Best POS on the market but you pay for it with the transaction fees. At 1.7% it’s one of the most expensive on the market

Third reader in a row that’s been faulty. This current one constantly becomes unreadable and needs to be re-added usually at the most inconvenient times
Wish it had more useful features for small business
I’m talking about tiny features that would help that they OVERCHARGE for like : rewards program.. as a cafe starting out it’s not much of an encouragement to start because it ends shortly after trial and yet another fee for something SO small that it works its self! Just include it! Or I’ll find another way…

I started my online business back in July and I love square pos. This app makes it simple to make websites and services for free. However, I can’t seem to figure out how to sell e- gift cards. Otherwise this app is great.

Blocked me from transferring money to my bank. Then told me after I told them several times I'm driving across the country to wait 2 business days. Even though I needed the gas money.
