Great value

The interface is very easy to use, even on a small iPhone screen. Also, there are plenty of puzzles included in the initial free download, making for great value.

Good app

Pretty good app, but the clues don't say how many words are used in the answer, which can be annoying.

Could have done better!

As the title suggests, every time I get about 3-4 puzzles solved the whole app just freezes up so I have to delete it and download it again to be able to do anything, needless to say I think I'll be looking for a different crossword app!

Ok.....if you’re from the USA.

App works quite well (although does not indicate multi word answers) and is quite good at highlighting across and down clues as you move around. Content is the problem. The ones I’ve done so far are heavily, heavily USA centric and banallly so at that. Think quiz show hosts of the past, US breakfast cereals, restaurant chains. You’ll also need a thorough knowledge of US sports terminology and personalities. Clues sometimes also assume a USA basis (e.g. referring to congress rather than the US Congress). The narrow world view on display is somewhat nauseating at times as is the use of bastardised and US slang English.

'Fines' if your from New Jersey

This app is rubbish, even by American standards. E.g Clue: cutoffs with a complicated history? A: Long Story Shorts ( with an s!) Reminded me of the song in Chicago and ironic American phrase 'I got the smarts' Plenty of other examples and too many references to American culture, news anchors, football teams and restaurant chains. Got bored and annoyed so deleted it within an hour. Why can't there be a decent crossword app out there for Brits!

What rubbish. If you're English the clues are obscure. I also think if you're American you'd be bored senseless with this. Why can't someone come up with a decent crossword app. Don't even waste your time on the light app.

Good but could be better!

Probably the best on the app store (but competition isn't great) as it is neatly designed, nice to use and there is a good selection of puzzles, but some of the clues and answers are just mindless! I think I had 'ooh' as one of the answers. Also, as I see my other other UK companions have pointed out, the game is quite americanised. Beware of the letter count where sometimes, for example, (4) should be (1) and (3)

Amazing, and it's free

I'm very surprised that this application is free. The designer has obviously worked very hard on this, making full use of the accelerometer to be able to see the whole table. Also using the ability to zoom in and out. Even if you get stuck it can give you some help. There are so many word-searches to do and more to download if you want them. If you like cross-words I very much recommend this application; it is well worth the time to download and will last a long while in entertaining you as it will I.

Only for USA

I thought this would be a great app when on the train, but now I realise that I need to know a lot about the USA to even be able to complete certain clues.... I am from the UK and as the game is based around our friends over the pond I have never finished a game yet!! Only buy it if you are from the USA

— KaronGuy

★★★☆☆ United Kingdom · v0 · 10 Feb 2010

Nice UI - but not a good ad for the full version

I am a Guardian cryptic crossword fan and although I like the feel of pen and paper I thought I would give this a whirl with a view to buying the full version if I liked it. Always handy to have a second or third crossword handy for those long flights! Sadly, the crosswords included in the light version (kudos for spelling it correctly!) are all in the 'a little-bit-cryptic' US style. Having lived and worked in the US I regularly did the crossword in USA Today, of which these puzzles are reminiscent, and I often struggled with the abundance of clues that assumed a knowledge of American history, places, chat show hosts, colloquiolisms, obscure (to us) TV actors etc. No major complaint about that - I learned a great deal about the country as a result - however, as a taster for the full version of this app, this will be unlikely to satisfy a British cruciverbalist - especially one who is a fan of the Guardian crossword! I confess that I merely skimmed through most of the puzzles but I could see it wasn't going to get any better. Having said that, I'm not 100% in agreement with previous reviewers who have suggested the clues are 'ill conceived' or 'insufficient'. They are simply the type of clues that style of puzzle contains, and without that deeper Americana knowledge you're going to struggle anyway. I know I did! I'd like to point out that this concern is about the CONTENT not the appearance or usability of the app, which looks good. Chuck in a few UK cryptic crosswords and I may try it again, otherwise, sorry, probably not.

★☆☆☆☆ United Kingdom · v0 · 13 Jun 2010

Oh my

Wow this has to be one of the worst apps ever and most definitly some of the worst croswords ever.. The answers are idiotic, really crap.. Crosword answers generally have lots of answers but these answers are more like "contents" and wud be sumthing that's barly even related. When u use the clues and u get the answer u think to urself.., eh???? WTF??! Basically this isn't a crossword for intelligence dont bother with it

Works really well and questions are difficult for someone who could never do the guardian, some of the telegraph, most of the mail and all the radio times.

— nitwittiest

★★☆☆☆ United Kingdom · v2.06 · 21 Mar 2011

Not brilliant

This app is typical of most crossword apps but as others have found, some of the answers you would never get without lots of prompting! Many of the questions are aimed at the American user which makes it even more frustrating. I've tried many of the crosswords supplied but am now giving up and downloading alternatives.

American Crosswords

The crosswords are very American in form and language, but the app itself is very well written. In the user interface stakes it is excellent.

— Anndra

★☆☆☆☆ United Kingdom · v0 · 30 Nov 2009

Nearly good!

This would be a really good app, but the considerable effort that has been put into the great interface is severely let down by the utterly ridiculous and ill conceived clues and answers! The developers should really go straight back to the drawing board with this and actually put some noticable effort into coming up with some clues and answers that make just a little sense, and that are globally pertinent! This issue really does effect the overall enjoyment of this app!

— Herbert_Sherbert

★★★★☆ United Kingdom · v0 · 12 Jun 2009

Liker of crosswords

Ok,but as stated by others is more for the America Market. Also on clues, does not tell you that answer is multiple words,eg (3,5),only tells you total number of letters. If this was rectified, would be better for both sides of the Atlantic!

★★★☆☆ United Kingdom · v0 · 4 Jul 2009

Get some variety

Excellent interface, but pity all the questions are American-orientated. Questions as a result are a bit simple/odd and it is impossible for the majority to solve, more variety from British newspapers would make all the difference.

★★★☆☆ United Kingdom · v0 · 17 Apr 2009

Problem is that it's Americanised (or should that be Americanized?)

I've tried loads of crossword apps, and this is by far the best. The ability to zoom, skip back and forth between clues and just general navigation is by far the most well-designed of the crossword apps. Sadly, the clues all seem very biased towards Americans.

★★★★☆ United Kingdom · v0 · 21 Aug 2008

Good; American.

I largely agree with the previous comment - the application is intuitive and entertaining. However the style and language are noticably American, and on a personal level I find it frustrating that there are clues where the answer is multiple words, but only given as a single number i.e. (9), where I would expect (4,5).
