Love this app. But you’d think after like a decade they’d let you use all the fun subscriber options and update your sheet appearance and things by now.

I’m a huge DND fan. I love to get my team into a bunch of trouble and stuff but like things to face I can’t have that character brainstorm I’m limited and I’m not gonna pay a boatload of money just to be able to play as like a different species, it’s not worth it. I’d be better off just playing with paper sheets. How greedy do you have to be people by your game all over the world and you decide that you’re gonna make it so that people have to pay money to get a certain species we’re not gonna do that. We paid to play a game we’re not gonna pay to be a character so give us the access to all the characters.

No Marketplace
The app is generally great. It’s my main use when I’m playing. But not having dedicated access to the marketplace except through character creation is really a bummer. I shouldn’t have to use the mobile site in my mobile browser when there is a mobile app that should do the same thing. Also, backing out of marketplace once you access it stops the character creation process. That’s a real pain.

Not For Indecisive People
I downloaded the app on a whim because I was bored and had nothing better to do, obviously this was not the app for that kind of thing , I was extremely excited to get down to playing but EVERYTHING, and I mean everything was behind a paywall, I’m not paying $40 for some random online D & D game book, so I decided to delete my account and the app (the same day I got it), but it’s such a hassle to just delete your account, it’s like Instacart or something, you have to go and submit a request to delete your account, DUDE, why am I requesting to delete MY account, and now I’m waiting for a D & D agent to message me back about deleting my account. If you’re a really big fan of D & D and have buckets of money you’re dying to spend on an online game, be my guest. I’m sure some people will enjoy the app, just not my vibe, just wanted to experiment with something new but I guess this wasn’t it! I’ll probably update my review after the D & D agent messages me about my request, but for now, I stand behind my 2 star review! Have a great day or night, or whatever! Bye bye!
App won’t update
Was still running a version from original install in 2025. There seems no way to download the newest version and was confused where to communicate or contact technical support through the App Support section. Tried to delete and reinstall and nothing changed. After putting forth a query through Apple they contacted me promptly with more details and help. Unfortunately it was just a redirect to the website which I had already tried with no luck as to how to send a message or open a ticket to get help for why bug fixes and updates are getting installed.

Cannot load library
Two iPads, updated, redownloaded, etc. Both stuck on cannot load library for months. I figured maybe one of the patches or completely reinstalling would fix it, but nothing has helped
Excellent resource
Nearly required for playing DnD if you ever use electronics. Vitual tabletop has improved in recently in the master tier subscription. Helps me to be able to play with family from 3 time zones away.
Mid
Pretty good would be more helpful if it added more explanations for what edition is being used. I am also frustrated that this app wants me to spend 29.99 on a digital handbook. I personally suggest just playing dnd on paper instead, as this app will probably only slow your campaign down. I will mention it is helpful in if you have forgotten your players handbook and need a quick reference.
Only works on phones
I have a iPhone,ipad, and a Mac book, the dnd beyond mobile app only works well on phones, white it is usable on iPads the functions aren’t to scale but everything works. But on a Mac book you physically can only make characters, everything else like reading a handbook is impossible, the text is black and the background is too meaning its impossible to see text that doesn’t have a link.

My review (not professional)
Awesome app but it has many flaws. Firstly it has too many payments which is super annoying if you want free alternatives and does there have to be a subscription!? It is really buggy, as seen in other reviews. It doesn’t load or show up even after reloading it, my experience with the app was fine, but others? Not so much. On to the positives, i really like the digital dice rolling because if i am playing somewhere without dice it is convenient. I especially like the fuzzy dice :) the character building is good especially with the stat calculations and classes that are from different books. In conclusion it’s a good app but it still needs some work to be done. Thank you Wizards of the Coast!
So Slow
For some reason just launching to the home page will take (literally) 2 minutes. Once it’s launched things are fine but during those 2 min it’s impossible to tell if the app has crashed or is just being SO SLOW
Very useful, could do so much more
Been using the app for years now. Very useful to easily read the sourcebooks, spells, classes, etc. but the listings tab needs enhancements to match the utility of the website. 1. Need to be able to sort by things other than alphabetical name order, being able to sort by spell level, or monster CR is essential 2. Monster CR filter. Why am I forced to have a range. Why can’t I filter to say just CR 4, why must it be CR3-4 or 4-5. This is an extremely easy fix. 3. Feat filters. You’ve added new types of feats in 2024 with general, origin, epic boons, dark powers. Let me filter by them. And similarly, let me filter backgrounds by what stat bonuses they give. I use this app near daily as a DM, and I continually find it just short of greatness.

Great… but
On Mac, the text of things like spells is in black, which is impossible to read against the dark background. It used to be fine but it broke a few weeks ago - please fix it!
In game dice are broken
Since the recent update the in game dice rarely work and the dice no longer roll. Just a glorified character sheet now.

I literally can’t even open my campaign book.
Good but not if your using a MacBook
Amazing on a phone but when I tried using this on a Mac everything in the setting wouldn’t work when I’m on a campaign, it was all just dark and I could barely see it.
Doesn’t work, money wasted
I bought a book. it should register the license and allow me to use the contents to make a character. Ive wasted my money and now i will seek free options.
A necessity
There offs so much information available! It’s wonderful! BUT the UI is a bit clunky and sometimes counterintuitive. Really can’t hold it against the devs given the insane scope of the app, but I think they can earn that last star with some fixes 😊

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
D&D Beyond insanely helpful, especially to new players that are trying to learn the basics. As a DM, I love being able to look up spells, and monsters to plan my adventures, and my players are able to navigate better, and when they dont understand something on their sheet, they can click on it for a description. My problem starts with the words “GO TO MARKETPLACE” I understand that WOTC needs to make money somehow, but I will be looking for the perfect monster to go in my dungeon, finally find one, and realize, its behind a pay wall. “This monster looks perfect!” Oh look I need to buy a 50 Dollar DIGITAL book for it to work, (which also means if you have the physical book womp womp, you need to buy it again.) not to mention that a lot of the items that make D&D beyond good are also behind a subscription. Want to track your players stats, health, items, and rolls, you need to buy a horribly expensive DM subscription. You want to use the homebrew you just made for one of your characters? You need that same damn subscription. WOTC is a penny pinching, woke worshiping bastard, that makes you pay for something you can find online for free. Physical books I understand having to buy, but if I can find the same thing they are selling for 50 bucks on google photos, than I start to have a problem. It is useful, I like the things you don’t have to buy, but in best terms, this app has somehow found a way to make a pay to win, out of D&D.
Very useful
I started using this app as a starter dungeon master at the age of 13 I’m now 14 and using this app I’ve lead countless campaigns and taught this app to the many players I’ve played with before, really helpful to newbies and really easy to understand, I don’t even have to lug around the massive books. Also the books are 50% cheaper here than the actual hardcover books. A really helpful app and I couldn’t play without it
Wasted my time
Selected to download a character sheet. Didn’t give me an option to go back and the only thing I could do was close the window. This app has only gotten worse.
Awesome D&D resource, but 5.5e character creation still needs fixes.
Long-time user here, writing this review two years after the 5.5e update and still waiting on D&D Beyond to implement fixes to make character creation with the 2024 rule sets as smooth as it was to use 5e. My group’s DM switched to 5.5 between our prior and current campaigns because we prefer some of these updates: e.g., changes to grappling/shoving and the weapon mastery system. Unfortunately, the downside we have noticed is taking longer to create characters because any spells a char gets from their class, race, or background do not load correctly in their Spellbook on the Class tab of the Builder. This feature we had in 5e made it easy to avoid selecting duplicate spells without jumping back and forth from the digital character sheet to the Builder. When is D&D Beyond going to restore these QoL features from 5e to 5.5e, such as the spellbook checking, searching character portraits, and probably others I have forgotten?

Being new to D&D and the apps really helped me understand how to create a character, understand and use them. I do feel hardback books should come with digital codes though otherwise very good!
It’s a great app, but…
Greed lets it down. I like the app as a whole, it’s workable, sometimes infuriating, but on the whole liveable with. However, I’m also a lover of physical books, and in this respect WotC have let me, a traditional player down. Games workshop let me buy a book, and the run lies a code to unlock the book on their app. Wizards want me to buy a digital and a physical copy. So I’m paying twice for the privilege of using the app to its fullest potential. Or I pay a heinous sum of money and unlock all the digital assets in the form of a subscription. The ability to quick search rules, spells etc is glorious, but honestly the app should enhance my experience not demand to be the centre of it. If I buy a physical, please just give me the digital for free, alternatively let me buy the subscription and offer me the physicals for free depending on my sub, but please don’t make me pay twice, especially not when the digital asset once created costs you nothing - which is why you want me to go that route, it’s maximum profit and free money.
Overpriced
I love Dungeons and Dragons. I’ve been playing since 2018 and I’ve had a great time. My buddies have enjoyed my campaigns and I have enjoyed theirs. however, the books for this game can range in price from anywhere from £15-£60 which is absurd for a digital book. Where most of the time you only want a few specific things from that book. Not to mention the fact that if you want to share the content from that book with your friends, you need to pay a subscription on top of that. As much as I enjoy this game, the daylight robbery that both D&D Beyond and WoTC promote kills most of the love that I have for D&D.
Amazing
I use this all the time as a player and dm, it makes everything so simple, it makes D&D more accessible to people, having all of my characters in one place is amazing and being able to make your own homebrew stuff in a easy way is fun

Deleted my character on last update

Wonderful usability, effective for beginners, good for seasoned players of DND, but a striking lack of ability to homebrew items and objects for personal use and homebrew campaigns. There is a custom Item feature, but you can’t set it up as a weapon or feature, just a title and does is all you get.
Great idea in theory
In theory, this app is great - a place to buy dnd books, create characters through a menu that includes all the books that you've bought, and play virtual dnd. In practice, you have to rebuy digital versions of the physical books, which you won't receive with a purchase of the digital books, to actually use the character creator if you have the physical copies, which feels stupid in my opinion, as this app feels like it should be a way to make character creation with additional books easier.
Long/short rest not working
Big fan of the app but it recently hasn’t been letting me long/short rest, change HP manually or change ki points manually. I’ve been connected to the internet, closed and then reopen the app, and signed out and back in. Nothing I’ve tried is working to reset this issue.
