What people like
- Deep, atmospheric writing and lore
- Highly replayable with endless possibilities
- Unique strategy mechanics feel fresh
What they complain about
- No tutorial or instructions at all
- Mobile save files often disappear randomly
- Interface gets messy and hard to manage
- Unforgiving timers cause instant failure easily
Not your normal app game.
Really, this is one of the best games in the store. You can play for a few minutes or hours, incredibly challenging and deep gameplay. The lore has wikis and has spawned two other games and a TTRPG. The Mansus is a haunting thought experiment. The writing is phenomenal.
No information.
The game gives you absolutely no information. You start off in a blank field with a card, figure maybe I should move this to here and that’ll do something and it does… It tells you nothing about what you’re doing or why.
Work grind
The task for making money should be automated.
No tutorial
Bought this game and I’ll never play it because there’s no tutorial and I’m confused.
Has potential
I don’t think this game is of an enjoyable difficulty to play on its own. It also gets really repetitive in the mid-late game when you’re just going through the motions of grinding secret histories for items to ascend. Overall I give this game a 5/5 for Game design + writing, and a 1/5 for game mechanics.
Hard, rewarding, addictive
It‘s real hard and yet it achives a really good balance. I think that it starts getting easier over time, overall the main problem I see is that it may be a little too addicting, yet, I still see foward to the dlcs and future updates 10/10
Charges for what?
I woke up to find that I was charged $2+ at 3am for this app. I didn’t purchase anything for the app and it didn’t appear in my subscriptions so I know there shouldn’t be any charges. I liked the app, but now I just have to delete it and hope to get a refund.
amazing game if you like being confused
this game feels like getting dropped into the middle of a magic the gathering tournament and you don't know how to play magic the gathering. you may have no clue what anything does but by god are you having fun
まとまりがない
時間制限でプレイヤーを急かす割にテキストが多すぎる。1話目がチュートリアルなのもマイナス評価。1話目こそ最高の物語でなければならないのに。単調なのにプレイングの精度を求める点もマイナス評価。
Great game but don't buy it
I enjoy this game very much and bought the DLC, but on mobile theres a constant chance of you sinking 20-30+ hours into a run, really learning and getting a flow going, then the next time you come back your save file is just gone, along with all your work with no way to recover it. It happened once long ago and I just tried to give it another shot, got 25+ hours in, lost all progress again. Just get it on steam or don't buy it at all on ios
A powerful and unique experience
A game about games, a game about existence, about living and dying and dreaming, about quests and temptatons and betrayals and sacrifices. It might entertain you. It also might change you.
Difficulty is Obfuscation of Slim Narrative Ending
It’s okay.
Got this on mobile and pc
A great game still tempted to buy the expansions for this game as well. It’s hard takes time to figure out. Wealthy heir getting money is best start. But you have no job you can only get menial work. Physician then police man the gubber and gubber office job imo lowest hardest. Keep at it it’s difficult but keep at it well worth £6.99 endless replayability
Barely a game
You can move cards around and wait, and read the descriptions. You might as well go spend $10 on a book, turning the pages would be about as much of a game. I bought this because I liked Stacklands on steam, but this is about 20x slower. Not recommended.
Too realistic
I spend a lot of time working and trying not to starve. It takes away from the exploration of the uknown because I’m always either working furiously or starving to death.
Onboarding like Jared Leto’s Joker
The only way you’re gonna be able to play this game is if you go elsewhere and investigate other peoples work. Ones who’ve already figured it out because it was poorly designed -the on boarding was anyway. If a game makes you stop playing it then walk out the chair to other sources in order to learn the rules that it intentionally didn’t share. There’s something of a problem there. I’d call it a stubborn mist step. The simulation of discovering cult knowledge should have mystery and testy initiation…. Discovery should feel magical… but they accidentally applied it to the UI and the game itself… so now it’s kind of difficult just to do basic things a lot of the time.. like comprehend UI and rules and goals. The frustration puts you in a tail spin because you actually believe that you’re playing a game.. No, it’s not a game.. it’s eventually a game -a top shelf game.. but it’s the equivalent of telling a family, “Come out to my place. We’re going fishing, and its just a plane ride away”, but then leaving out the fact that it’s mysteriously 25 below zero where you live and the lake is under 10 feet of ice. To approach it as if it is a game- is wrong -and you will hurt yourself if you do that. The game is under the 10 feet of ice that you need to excavate. So you’re not playing a game, you’re operating a tool that looks deceptively like a game for maybe the first day or two, because it has no rule book. No rules = no game.. So first, you have to excavate the rules in pure darkness -using the tool that- at this stage -appears to look exactly like a game .. you are an archaeologist and your job today is to go in the football field and find all 10 needles that we hid at various elevations under the ground. The needles represent the rules.. so I did what everybody did. I went on the Internet and cut my time in half +not to say that my time trying to learn all of this was short. That’s the result of the games stubborn misstep design for a lot of players. I couldn’t help but feel like I was doing other people’s jobs .. I went on the Internet to the wiki, and I went to the community forums where I met a whole bunch of other unpaid interns as well. Some of them were happily participating. If you’ve never played this, you just need to understand that you need to do a lot of work before you ever play the game.. don’t be fooled and think that you’re playing it when you hit the start button. I’m here to tell you that the game is good when you gain board literacy. I recommend begging, borrowing, stealing and cutting whatever corners you have to in order to experience it. GPT or your AI of choice is a free tutor and they won’t tell everybody how stupid you are and all the dumb questions you asked after you leave the room (the way that the real tutors do).
Garbage
The game is so unclear. There is no explanation on how to play whatsoever. I’ve spent 6 hours trying to understand and just dropped
A challenging roguelike card-game with a couple of big flaws
If you like punishing, you’ve come to the right place. Cultist Simulator is a genuinely fascinating and engaging virtual card-game where you only have one save and there’s no take-backs. It’s a game of trying to reach ascension via Sensation, Enlightenment or Power. The game works by making you learn the rules as you play, and by periodically dropping difficult challenges in front of you. It’s fun, and sometimes immensely frustrating. The frustration is the killjoy for me. Mess up your timing or selection once? No take-backs! Get distracted by anyone or anything whilst the live timer is running? You lost your job! And it’s easy to miss the build-up of game-ending problems with everything that’s going on. Although there’s a snap-to grid for the virtual cards, the organisation system is your own, and as it gets busier and busier it’s harder and harder to keep track of what’s going on. There’s no real warning you’re nearly at game over until a card or system turns red - and by then, it’s probably too late. This is fun. I’d buy it again. But stand back, and you realise that it’s got elements of a rat maze made harder by what appears to be degrees of random chance. The only way to learn is the hard way. And I was kind of hoping we’d gotten beyond that in game design now. But hey - I’d buy it again and I’ll play it again. And again. Eventually I’ll win. I hope.
Confusing Mess
Games can sometimes get away with an absence of a tutorial. Learning how to play can be a thrilling experience however in Cultist Simulator the only feeling you achieve from playing is nausea. The music repeats in the background as you play and struggle to accomplish anything meaningful. When a game is meant to be learnt through trial and error this process should feel rewarding however when playing Cultist Simulator you simply feel sluggish and exhausted. Cultist Simulator is a great experience with incredible gameplay, that is if you can make it past the monotonous and exhausting gameplay which is required in order to reach a point in which enjoyment is possible. Overall it’s up a potentially great game held back by poor design decisions and a lack of clarity, 2/5.
No Music or Sounds
While the game itself is intriguing the sfx and sound/ music simply don’t work
Flawed Brilliance is still Worth It
This game is unique and the things that are good are so good that if you have remote interest or think you might then you should absolutely play it. I would rank this among my favorite games even though I’ve never finished a single game. And there is a the catch: I think it is deeply flawed *as a game*. The core mechanics are those of a “plate spinner” w/ exploration (of card interactions). But the games are looooong. This means that even though losing doesn’t feel too bad (as it works well attractively) that you have to slog through the plate spinning elements but without the exploration and while, eventually, already being familiar with the narrative. Combined with the game being quite long and the plate spinning nature making it easy to just *miss* some debt you have to pay or lose that game — … well, ai can almost not imagine playing a game to completion *despite* loving it. —- But what’s good in the game is excellent, so even just a fraction of the completed game still makes it rank among my favorites. (This is, imo, typical of this author btw — great atmosphere, great text, good use of mechanics to enhance narrative … but the mechanics aren’t good enough for me to finish any of their games. They’re like half-complete masterpieces. … which sort of works in its own way. :)
Poor quality game
Why did I pay for this rubbish it’s boring and confusing deleted
Not for the impatient
I have seen many reviews that claim this game is too difficult of makes no sense in some regards, they are both right and wrong I believe. Yes the game lacks a tutorial and does not help you at all but that’s the point, it’s a game where the more you play the more you learn about how it works, when I first started off I barely had any idea what everything did or could cause to happen but now I have at least enough to be able to know when to hold off or go all in, trying to rush the game is not a great idea either as it can cause you to fall into trouble your not yet ready for, patience is the key here for the most part. Yes you have limited resources and such at times and again you have to know when to stop, the game allows you to pause it for a reason it’s not just to stop whatever’s going on but to in my opinion allow you to think before you act and decide how best to use those resources and when to use them. Overall while the game can be challenging once you actually get the idea of how everything works at the basic level your more or less set for the entire game as you can then advance your own knowledge as you go and if you die or lose the game then pick yourself up and try and try again.
Lot of plate spinning….
Lot of plate spinning, I’ll stick with it for a while longer, but so far the depth is hidden.
A better tutorial would be really nice.
4 hours in and still have no idea what I’m doing. My spread is a mess and way too many things are happening. I did some stuff that I have no clue what they did, and there’s things that giving me things that I don’t know where they go, so I just random things in places where I assume they go and somehow it’s doing something. It’s a very confusing game.
Difficult, but engrossing!
This game has no tutorial, so be prepared to put in some time to figure stuff out. Once you get the hang of it, it’s difficult to put down. Pro tip for beginners, USE THE PAUSE BUTTON!

Love table top games
SplattercatGaming on YouTube uploaded a first impression video and it looked like my kinda game so I’m gonna give it a go.
Couldn’t carry on playing for more than 30 minutes
It’s a shame there is clearly a lot of thought that’s gone into this game but ultimately it just can’t really grab my attention. It’s irritating as it’s too fluid and too confusing. If you are going to make the game mechanic so loose I think the UI should be a bit more fixed so you have some concept of the core elements. I end up with a board of floating cards and categories that jump around the place, sometimes combining similar cards sometimes not. Also the learning curve is all over the place, instead of introducing elements slowly over time you are left with dealing with everything at once whilst not even really understanding what the goal or purposes is.
Good game, but Game Center integration?
I love this game and have played it extensively on the Switch and quite a bit on iPad and iPhone. On iPhone I’ve never had any evidence of Game Center working, but did unlock a few achievements I later learned. On iPad it used to show that I was logged in through Game Center and there was an Achievements button on the main menu, but that has suddenly changed.
Fresh
Unlike any common game. It’s just new and really cool!
Random and timed
Not a fan of timed games, from the outset you’re behind the clock and no time to enjoy the game play, beyond me how it rates so high, don’t waste your money!
I LOVE this game, BUT....
It is SO difficult to get health. Like, I can’t even count on 1 hand how many times I’ve died from having no health, and I’ve only been playing this game for a few hours. Please do something about that lol
I haven’t got a clue..
I’ve been playing it for about 45 minutes and I haven’t the foggiest idea what it’s about, what to do, and i’m no more the wiser than the first minute I started playing, and the cryptic text is totally lost on me, i’m bored already...
Way too hectic to keep track of anything
I play games so I don’t have to think critically every waking moment thanks.
Top tier
There is no tutorial for this game and I think that makes it extra appealing. Life has no tutorial and we often have to seek out things we’d like to know. Thank you game devs and past generations who have paved a path :)
No instructions or explanations. Unplayable.
Not sure if this is even a game. There are no instructions, no explanation on the mechanics of how it works, not even anything stating what the goal is. There are random cards that you put on random pedestals that produce other random cards until the game is randomly over for whatever random reason. It is completely unplayable without explanation as to what is going on, how it works, and what you’re trying to accomplish.
A genre of its own (but glitchy)
An extremely intriguing game that has a 4D depth behind its 3D interface. You can really sense the love that went into its creation. It isn’t a game you play to rush through to an ending or to ‘win’ - rather one that accompanies you on a journey, nudging and guiding you with its hauntingly beautiful narrative, dipping a toe into alchemy and disappearing round the next bend in a way that creates the illusion of forcing you to tune into personal instinct rather than reason. At the moment, there is what seems to be a very obvious bug that I’m finding frustrating, because I’d like to explore the transformation side of the game and I think this might be a key - it isn’t possible to visit the club with Sulochana, despite her instructing you to meet her there - the start button remains greyed out. Hopefully (unless I’m missing a trick!) this will be fixed soon. A really good piece of game design, nonetheless.
Interface poorly implemented
Stuff gets spread out all over the table, it becomes a mess quickly. I want to play a cards game, not a manage your card table game!
a LOT of grinding
This is a compelling idea but needs serious editing. The game is basically all about grinding with random drops, which would be okay if it felt like you were making meaningful progress. However there is a looong stretch in the middle of the game where you can spend hours without much really happening. And there are some random occurrences (curses) which can completely ruin your game without much recourse. Without save files, you just have to start over again.
love it
i have this game on my ipad, phone, and on steam on my labtop. it's a bit complicated and i suggest playing it on a big screen but it is very fun for individuals who enjoy strategy and mystery
Too many ways to lose, too many repetitive activities
game has far too many ways to lose. Doesn’t tell you enough information to make informed decisions. You have to die over and over to understand how to make progress. This means hours upon hours with 0 chance of victory or even meaningful progress.
Enjoyment beckons, but at the expense of sanity
Like the makers’ other games, it’s a great idea with novel mechanics, but falls flat when it comes to usability, longevity and player-centric design. Too often, the ‘mysterious’ and ‘explorative’ gameplay ends up being a bit of an excuse for bad interaction design. Be prepared to quickly understand the workings of the game, only to be twice frustrated by how it layouts different classes of cards (not convenient, painfully similar) or how you will frantically need to drag cards into slots vaguely trying to remember which obscure combo allowed you to put another obscure thing in another. At the very least it should upgrade to better helper functions once you have understood the game. I feel oddly punished for understanding how the gameplay works, as the interface punishes the experienced player to provide an initial brief figuring out period. All in all, I recommend this game for its honest and brave stab at creating new concepts, but I will caveat it with above frustrations.
Original idea, too frustrating to enjoy
This could be a really good game, and it is clever and original. However, there are just too many things going on, too many concepts to remember, and too many mechanics to try to understand, all while your hard-to-get, harder-to-develop cards expire and degrade within a couple of minutes of getting them. Honestly, it might be more fun and rewarding to actually try to create a cult in real life.
A bit dense, but ok
As much as it’s initial charm has been delightful to steep myself into, I can’t help but find myself starving or getting murdered before a great deal of the “cult” stuff begins. I’ve dove into about 20 games now, experimented to my hearts content, but haven’t managed to achieve proper cult status nor found a successful ending. That aside, the music, sfx, art style, and concept are all fantastic. But the countdown gameplay makes it difficult to revel in the delightful storytelling delivered through text. It seems a bit hindered this way. At the price it is, it’s easy to recommend. But the gameplay itself is so conflicted in its design and comes with a learning curve Im certain very few have overcome. I think it’s interesting, but demands far more than just your interest to keep playing (which I think very few people will afford it).
Best game I’ve ever played
I have played so many mobile games It’s hard to keep track and I cannot emphasize enough that this is the most intriguing and difficult but addictive game I’ve ever played. This game does not hold your hand, but instead allows you to make mistakes and retries until you finally figure it out. If you like to play any kind of strategy game this is a must have in your app collection.
Thieves
Charged me £5.99 even though I’ve never even played the game
Worth the money
Love the concept and it’s been executed well. My only complaint is that the aim is unclear. I found a few things like temptation power but it doesn’t explain what to do with it. But all said and done, great game!
Text way to small for an iPhoneSE
There is a lot of text in this game to learn what’s going on and it was way too small for me on my iPhoneSE. I havent been able to get the gist of what the game is about, such a shame.
Mediocre and perhaps overrated
This game is quite interesting and exciting when you first start. Reading the description and reviews, it seemed like a very mysterious game as you’re suppose to find out how to play. When I first played it, it did match the descriptions quite well. It starts off slightly confusing and all but as you continue you start to read more of each card and try to look for clues on what to do. But it does get quite frustrating and in the end it feels like a waste of money. The mechanics works, the graphic are good, and the idea is interesting, which earns the 3 stars from me. But it feels very difficult trying to make significant progress in the game. Trying to gain new cards just to study another card is hard because you don’t get a tutorial. Your character always seems to stop developing at one point because of the difficulty. My point is, the situation of “I can’t seem to get past this point” happens too often. This makes the game frustrating and boring, while defeating the purpose of the game.
