It’s the best!!!!!
It’s simple, accurate, and comprehensive. 🙂
No trial?
I’m interested in trialling this as I’m coming up to the end of my annual Cronometer subscription. However, there is no way to do so. I contacted them but they only offered a trial where I have to put my credit card details in. Why not allow a free trial through the App Store … virtually all other apps do.
A sweet app
I’ve been using Carbon for more than a year. My man uses carbon too. I love being able to make a recipe and send him the link so he has accurate macros, too. Their customer service is fantastic. Every time I use the message feature, the responses are prompt and helpful. Thank you Layne and the Carbon team!
It’s a tracker
There are cheaper ones that are just as useful. I have not seen the value of spending $99 a year. I will get a different tracker when my year is up. It is a good tracker though. Just not sure why it has to be $99 a year when there are cheaper ones having the same features
Not ideal
I would wish to be able to track more things like micronutrients. Tracking foods can be a pain. For example I make my coffee at home. I use a specific soy milk. So for example I tried putting in: „Cappucino double shot with pure harvest unsweetened soy milk and 1 tea spoon honey.“ nope would do it. Instead it suggests cappucino‘s from different coffee shops or simply a cappucino without specifying the milk. But this is what makes the difference! Do I use normal milk or soy milk? Is it sweentened or unsweetened. Is my coffee a single shot or double shot. All things necessary for precise tracking. Then I tried a flat white. Same milk but I only put in föat white. When I tapped it it showed me an error. But when I choose a flat white from a coffee shop it works. Sorry but first day and already had enough.
Simple and Effective
I love how Carbon uses a circle with rings for fat, carb, and protein— it helps me make each meal balanced, rather than simply trying to reach arbitrary numbers by the end of the day. I appreciate such an effective app; it’s rare nowadays to find a product that’s worth the money, but Carbon fits that bill.
No free option
Scam no free option
If your serious
Lose / again / Maintain. Do it all with Carbon
Limited food options
I find it frustrating when I’m trying to adhere to recommendations about macros to and I can’t accurately record my food intake. Ex: golden kiwi with skin on, only option is a generic kiwi. Or cornmeal breaded catfish, only option is battered or baked catfish. If it’s adding 13 calories per week to my goals, I’d like that level of detailed accuracy in my food reporting but the options are there.
Not what I expected
Just want to say, one week in to a six month subscription and I am not overly impressed with this app compared to MyFittnessPal. I have been tracking for 4 years and was hoping this app would provide something more. So far, doesn’t link to my activity from Apple Watch, and many of the foods in Canada aren’t listed. The interface isn’t as user friendly and I feel frustrated logging because it takes more time. I will continue to use it because I paid for it but I am not planning on renewing.
Great
I have been using this app for 4 months and and I am down so far 12 pounds, but yo be fair I did go on a one month vacation where I added 6 pound. Three weeks after I returned I am back where I stopped before the vacation.
Not worth $$
Tracks macros - just another celebrity endorsed scam - there are free versions that do the same things
Great functionality
I’ve used the app several times in the past 5 years, and I’ve always had success with it. I like that the barcode scanner works so well, that you can shift the goals across the week, and that there are several ways that the developers have used the algorithms to make a better product. My one wishlist item is that they would make a widget function so I can toss the app into my widget screen for ease of opening.
Overpriced - under deliver
Very basic, missing a lot of features, complete waste of money
Great app let down by connection problems
A very well designed easy to use app with great functionality, it makes recording food very easy and I gained insights while it worked. The best thing is how fast it makes getting the data into the system with a clever combination of barcode scanning and remembering what has previously been entered. Unfortunately unreliable connection issues render it useless for me now. I’ve tried various things but it still doesn’t work. I’m using a fairly modern iPhone and all the other apps I have can connect without issues it’s just this one that doesn’t work.
Top of the line
Far superior to any app I’ve used, easy conversions based your preferred measurement (ounces, grams, etc.). Algorithm will adjust your calories +\- based on your scale results, easy to copy meals across multiple days at once if you meal prep… The app keeps getting better!
Just use MyfitnessPal
For a paid subscription it should work better. Barcode scanner did NOT work about 90% of the time, when it did work it didn’t recognize the food or it improperly calculated the macros to be lower than the nutrition label (shouldn’t have to double check). The macro options to log food were helpful but I wonder how accurate it is since the app doesn’t calculate accurately with the barcode scanner. My coach never met with me. MyFitnessPal is almost equivalent to this app and it’s free.
Exercise
It would be helpful to update my initial comment on exercise.
Update food database
Please please please, I really like the app but the small amount of food in the database is just ridiculous. 7 times out of time I need to add my macros manually. Because of that and the lack of improvement from the last 5-6 months I turn back to my fitness pal ;(
An OK
I really wanted to like this app. I like the team behind it and it’s a great idea backed by science but it falls short. The food database used doesn’t have the scanned product a lot of the time. You might argue that if you are that dedicated to change your diet then entering manually shouldn’t be an issue. But paying a monthly fee I would expect the database to be more complete. The nutrition label scanner is a good idea but again it picks up wrong a lot of the time and requires correction. I was also coming to the end if the week and had been ‘saving’ my calories to have a relaxed weekend. I went to check the app to see how much of my weekly calories were remaining to eat over the weekend. The app couldn’t tell me the total calories used to date that week or how many were left. This is something very basic that would take the user time to calculate but could be done instantly by an app. Overall good idea but it’s just not worth that monthly fee to me with these limitations. EDIT: I see the developer has replied. I did email on this calorie calculation query before posting the review and was told it wasn’t possible for the app to do this 🤷🏻♂️
Great for being honest with myself
I’ve used a few other macro trackers and I greatly appreciate that this one calls me out when I’m not compliant. Not only does this keep me consistent with eating habits, but also the weigh-ins. It is completely based on the data you enter. No data, no adjustments and likely less progress. I also really like the option of reverse dieting. They recently changed the one thing I didn’t like: I want to be able to copy previous meals since I meal prep. They made this easier to log, so looking forward to that feature.
95% of foods don’t scan and search is almost as bad.
It’s a nice idea but it just doesn’t work. Pretty much every barcode I scan is not recognised. Searching by name rarely turn up the correct result. I have no problem with these functions on My Fitness Pal. Considering that carbon is double the cost of MFP, this is disappointing. Customer service couldn’t help me and refused to refund. I foolishly paid for a year up front. This app has been around for a few years now and the basic functionality still isn’t there. Don’t waste your money.
Food
Couldn’t find a lot of foods , especially beef like beef chunks I do no if USA call it something else as I live in Australia,
Not good international capability.
I purchased a monthly membership yesterday. Starting entering my foods and tried to scan products. Unfortunately the app doesn't have a big database and could not detect very popular brands of my country (New Zealand). MFP has never given me this issue, I will be returning to that. Have cancelled my subscription with carbon.
Better if you’re in the US
I’d imagine this is better for people in the US as the UK and Swiss Barcodes and produce don’t seem to work as well and so whilst I love Layne and his work, I will head back to MyFitnessPal.
Great App
I have been using this for 2 years and it’s great. It’s is really easy to track everything and the interface is very user friendly. The chat support is great as well and I always get responses very quickly. The feedback given is clear and the adjustments are explained well. Overall great app if you’re looking to cut, bulk, or maintain.
Stay away there’s much better apps
This app is so basic it could be a spreadsheet. All manual data entry. The “coach” is just an algorithm that checks if you hit the intervals you yourself set. It didn’t read from my health data to create the plan. You cannot add new foods, only recipes, and the database is limited. And worst of all, they have no trial so now I wasted my money!
Only one modification is make otherwise perfect
This is a perfect app. The tracking and coaching are worth every penny The ONLY thing I’d change is to make the current day a different colour. I am constantly adding or deleting a food to the wrong day as I’m often copying to today or tomorrow.
Going back to myfitnesspal
I had high hopes for this. I think the interface is clean and it is easy to use. Ultimately myfitnesspal’s free edition is better IMO than this app which makes the monthly fee feel really steep. My major gripes: -recipe entry - one by one ingredient adding is inconvenient with no batch add option -food catalogue isn’t as extensive as MFP -no iPad version which would help with some of the data entry -macro / calorie suggestions via the “coach” - nothing groundbreaking here that you couldn’t find online yourself or with MFP
Flawed outside of the US
Great app. Clean, easy to use and good science backed data. But for users outside of US it suffers a fatal flaw. The food database they use is FatSecret and locked to US foods only. Meaning the bar scanner fails 90% of the time. You can enter it manually but that becomes a pain after a while Even entries that are in the database are incorrect - as US versions often have different nutritional values then elsewhere. Hopefully a version update will add support for non-US food databases.
Trust is the utmost!
I trust the trends and base my future physical self on it!
Paid for the app but rejected by Facebook group
Paid for this app and tried to join the online community. Answered the basic questions as requested e.g. “where did you hear about the app?” but told I couldn’t join with no reason given. If you’re looking for support/to be able to use the full features of this app (something that is crucial) I’d seriously suggest using a different app that you’re going to get your money’s worth from.
Fiber!!!!
Please make an option to count net carbs and fiber. I know not everyone likes too, but as someone who likes to get a lot of fiber in the day it always makes me go over my macros to see total carbs, just for the accuracy this would make it very helpful as I know other calorie counters have this option and I really wanna track my fiber without having to use another app. Also a more broad database could be very helpful as sometimes it’s hard to find the most basic food. Just listened to a podcast episode with Layne and was talking about the importance of fiber, so please let me track it :’(
Not for me
I heard one of the creators talking about this on the Huberman Lab podcast so I gave it a go, having used the free MyFitnessPal app for a while. I can’t see the benefit of this, and definitely not for £9.99 a month. I like the fact that MyFitnessPal takes exercise into account as you undertake it (noting that most exercise trackers do overstate the calories burned from exercise). However I’m a cyclist and often do a 4-6 hour ride, so my exercise isn’t a steady spread over the week. (Carbon just gives a daily calorie requirement based on levels of activity). I couldn’t see any smart recommendations in the 3 weeks or so I tried this, so I cancelled the subscription. In summary, not for me.
Good but frustrating
Having used MyFitnessPal, I find CDC has a far better Interface and the diet coaching is next level. My biggest frustration however is the food logging. It is absolutely atrocious, it cannot find simple foods and very little is found using the barcode scanner. It can lead to inaccurate logging and take too much time. Lucky I’ll it’s half the price of MyFitnessPal or I wouldn’t continue with CDC. PLEASE ADDRESS THE FOOD LOGGING…
The best coach and tracking app
Look no further. It’s worth every cent. At last you don’t have to worry if you’re doing it right—carbon and the incredible team behind it has got your back. If you actually measure and log everything you eat and hit your target macros for 3 months, you’ll see so much progress. The app adjusts to your actual progress and adherence. I find it’s coaching to be accurate, not generic. I’ve recommended this to about 5 or 6 people who have started using it—each to great success.
Rip off
I’ve been using this app for two months. It is way overpriced for the features provided. I was using the free version of Myfitnesspal for many years and thought using a premium diet App like Carbon might may assist with my weight aspirations. I was so complexly wrong and have to run Carbon alongside MyFitnessPal alongside each other. My main disappointments are that there is no water tracker, food database is very limited, you can’t add barcodes food to the database, it doesn’t track exercise. The latter was the biggest gripe as I’m losing weight quickly even though my macros are for maintenance. The weigh in insights are pedestrian. I’m stuck with the years subscription after falling for the hype from YouTube reviews. I suggest trying the app for a month and you will quickly be looking for an alternative
My favorite macro tracking app
Ive tried a few, noom, my fitness pal ans now carbon tracker. With noon I was able to change my mindset around food and lost the majority of the excess weight I had to lose (24lbs). However because I followed the 1200 calorie a day plan, I lost muscle mass. I picked the weights back up 4 months ago, and am focusing on cutting the last 10 while toning and carbon diet is getting me there in a very healthy and seamless way. My only suggestion for improvement is how it evaluates your weigh close to your period. If youre close and are not seeing the loss you are aiming for, it will keep your macros the same. However the next time you check in, if compliant the loss shows up as bigger than a normal loss in a week, but only because of water retention the week before. This leas the app to increase my calories which was inaccurate, took 2 more weeks to get my macros back to where I needed them to be to lose again. Otherwise, hands down worth the price.
Many better apps out there
User interface is not as clear. Can’t save meals, so you have to manually add everything (add yesterdays breakfast). Can’t enter specific number of grams, but rather have to add that 1 serving is 65 grams, so if you have 100 grams you have to do the math to find what fraction of a serving it is. The macro budget that the app creates doesn’t actually match the calories, so if you follow the macros, you’re over on calories! The list of foods isn’t as comprehensive as other apps either. Lot of hype, and not as good as even the free versions of some others.
No trial
Probably good but not what I wanted and had to pay to test it. Should have a free trial like most apps.
My coach
Coach was really good, but it updated and now it’s PERFECT.
Food Database is inferior to MyFitnessPal
App is nice, but many food items don’t exist in their darabase when scanning barcode. Have also had several time where a item comes up but nutritional information is different to label (serving and/or per 100 mL/g). Subscription is rather expensive to be this flawed.
A few minor adjustments would make it 5*
1. Would be good to have a Copy paste fro URL recipe builder 2. Serving size - we need to be able to pick 1 tbsp, 1 cup. Etc. Sometimes the only option for is 2.5tbsp and then I have to do the math on 1 tbsp (or cups) 3 an option to just add 100 calories
Not as good for UK users vs competitors.
TL:DR If in the UK get NutraCheck app, read on the internet and manage your own macros. In comparison to the Nutracheck app which has a much better tracker including food sharing and the UK database is accurate with a UI in general that is significantly better. Carbon often appears to forget what foods you’ve used regularly unless you create them, which isn’t a huge time investment but considering the annual cost should be included. There are countless items where a barcode scan brings up either the wrong food or the macros are wrong so you basically need to create your own food library. The search operator is also buggy and brings up highly processed foods first over an actual vegetable when searching with its name. The algorithm “coaching” for calorie adjustment is okay, but I think if you watched layne norton’s videos there is enough information there to do this yourself and the time and money you save with the better UI/functionality of Nutracheck - as a UK user - makes up for this and especially if you live with a partner who also tracks rather than them also having to create a food/recipe. I’m sticking out the process for the time being of diet and reverse and will update should it change.
Good but glitchy
The app is fine. Gives you all the info you need and pretty simple to use. However, whenever I logged foods, the data I entered kept disappearing, making the app unusable.
Best app for tracking macros
Great recipe builder and easy to adjust everything!
Can’t add barcodes
I’m in Canada, unable to scan barcodes. Not sure if location or country has anything to do with it. Haven’t been able to scan anything. Can be frustrating. Can scan the exact same ones to myfitnesspal.
Great App
Prefer this app over other like my fitness pal. I find it easier to input meals and track macros/calorie targets. Clean design, simple to use. Price is comparable. Support is really good for the app. Would like the option to be able to further break meals down into main meals and snacks, just to make it easier to allocate calories per “eating session”. Also, as an Australian, I find I have to create a lot of custom foods as a lot of things available here are missing. Would also be good to have exercise tracked into the app so I can adjust my eating at a glance to maintain my ideal deficit as I’m training.
Scanning food
Scanning food doesn't include all Food even if I changed the region/Language would appreciate it if this is fixed. I know I could add it manually still time-consuming to add all macros and micro. Thank you
Needs more features and greater Aussie database
Regular MFP user from Australia and thought I’d try this out and see how it compares, as I have seen a lot of good reviews. On first glance, it is relatively easy to use and the check-in feature is cool, however there are a few sticking points which make me unsure about whether or not I’ll continue with a subscription: - Australian database is significantly smaller. Around 50% of food items I eat, I’ve had to enter in myself as it hasn’t recognised barcodes/brands or puts it in as a different flavour/incorrect macros than labelled. Overall the database is much smaller and ever for items eaten out, there haven’t been close matches and I’ve ended up having to track in MFP and ‘quick add’ the calories/macros for the meal to Carbon. - Was also expecting this app to adjust your macros on days to follow if you were to be under/over calories/macros, however you have to do this yourself manually. Not a biggie, but would make this app so much better if it was able to do this on its own. - Initial macros calculated for a deficit were WELL below what I’d consider putting myself on. Could be okay for gen-pop to use the coach to set macros, however if you’re a training athlete and have built your metabolism in off-season, you’re better off inputting your own maintenance calories and going from that. I understand it takes a while to get your data and set itself up more accurately, however the calories calculated initially were well below what I’d even be on at the end of a prep. - No option to add photos to track your progress visually along with weights. Would be a really cool feature to add, along with the option to add in body measurements. The app would be great if it were to be developed further with a greater database and more features.
