What people like
- Shows exactly where to park
- Great for finding new streams
- Works well with no cell service
What they complain about
- Offline maps fail without signal
- No maps available for Canada
- Support never actually responds
- App crashes when you open it
Great APP I use it in Colorado and New Mexico several times a year
Good app for showing public fishing access
Won’t open when I needed it the most
Spent weeks researching a 3 week trip to Idaho from Texas. That’s a 3 day drive. Had dozens of river and streams tagged and maps downloaded for some. App stopped working when I was deep in the frank church wilderness. Have tried everything to get it up and running. Hoping to hear from tech support soon. It’s a major issue as almost all my research was tied to this app.
font way too small
font way too small good otherwise
Useless
The app is completely useless unless you pay money .
Great if you know what you’re looking for…
This app is great at giving you information about specific rivers and streams, but it’s incredibly difficult and frustrating to find cities, lakes and highways. Not sure what it is, but on Google Maps, I have no issues. On this app…good luck. As an example, I am going to Stanley Idaho next month and would like to know what streams are available in the area. Problem is, it’s almost impossible to find Stanley on the map. I won’t be renewing my subscription unless this is remedied. It would be so much better to also be able to search by city or town. I reached out to support with no response. Update 8/8/26 I’m able to find towns now, but still won’t pull up most lakes and reservoirs.
Help does exist when you have a problem!
Thank you Trout Routes, the directions solved my problem. Your response to my Help Request was very prompt. So I changed my rating to Five Stars. ISSUE - Paid for the annual subscription and Apple Apps shows that is so. Yet when I go to use Trout Routes it is always requesting that I upgrade from the basic level. Then when it I oblige the program to upgrade it, it reports I have already subscribed. His has happened multiple times. There is no HELP access on the app to try and take care of problems. I finally found the Contact Information out side of the app on your web site. Your directions solved the issue. Thanks!!!!
Frustrating
While on Wi-Fi or with good cell coverage (5G full bars), the app seems to work perfectly fine. You can plan for different fishing areas and download maps easily. The frustration comes when you’re out in the field without a signal, though. The app fails to open and you are now unable to access any of the downloaded maps that you planned for. So if you want to move spots to different locations, you are pretty much blind as to access points and regulations without good cell service.
Map flips upside down
Whenever I home into my location, the whole map flips upside down everytime. So I have to close it out everytime and reopen. Not that big of a hassle but I just remember not to home into my location.
New version JUNK
They updated the app and now all of the private easement that are granted by individuals are gone. This actually happened once before about six or seven months ago and they fixed it. Maybe have a little code review to make sure that features that are useful don’t disappear. I guess it’s useful to know who owns the land but many people in the area I live in Grant easement and those are gone now.
Offline maps are useless
Offline maps are useless when you are limited to 750 tiles. Overall, you’re paying for the data. The app is clunky and not that great of an experience from a UI/UX perspective, but the information is very useful. Gotta take what you can get from it.
Service 20 stars is t enough
Absolutely awesome 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glitchy and disappointed that I paid for a subscription
App repeatedly gets stuck when it’s opened. Honestly, our state fish and game maps are more useful than this app, and they can be accessed for free. App really falls short of what a paid application should offer. If it integrated state stocking info, it might be worth it. But I still find that the classification system they use is not very accurate.
Good but room for improvement!
I like the app, it has shown me some good streams in california and its very helpful to find access points and/or campsites. Now one thing i wanna point out is if you‘re paying it would be nice to actually have up to date regulations right in the app. I understand that it‘s alot among 1000s of streams across the US but maybe even having a little social feature where people could leave comments on certain streams on what current regulations are. Or (and i don‘t know how easy that is for implementation but creating an algorithm that detects fishing regulations online and updates them in real time)! Another thing is, i tried out the fish species filter system seems to be a little unreliable. Just came back from owen‘s river which is known for brown trouts and while rare still holds lahontan cutties. When i used the species filter for browns cutthroats and some other species, owen‘s river didn‘t even seem to pop up nor did alot of the more southern rivers that do hold those fish. I understand that maybe the app is trying to prevent people from overfishing certain spots that hold endangered species which i find great but then again why even add a species filter in the first place… all in all i think its a good app for finding streams and access points eventho i haven‘t used it a ton yet but i‘ll definitely try to use it more and give more feedback later! Thank you for the team to put so much love into this app i hope they know it is very appreciated especially since it has become such a niche sport!
Pls Canada
Pls put Canada in I will 100% buy the membership if you add Canada we need it there is so many streams
Display of River content is too wide on Mobile - user experience
Seems like this new update has the details of rivers extend beyond the screen margins. Not fun to try to read - content box is just sized too wide.
Fly Fisherman’s MUST HAVE
Trout routes will help open up new fishing opportunities to you that you didn’t even know existed! Even ones close to where you live! If you love trout fishing and want to find new places to wet your line. This is your app. Look no further. Especially Amazing for newer anglers looking to find streams to fish. Trout fishing can be daunting at first. Let trout routes help make things easier for you.
Don’t waste your time
We spent some time driving to spots that noted some fishing spots and they were completely inaccurate. I wish this app gave more information on each of the fishing locations they post on their app. I would not recommend anyone to buy this app.
Love it. More tiles please!
Love the app. Would gladly pay for a higher service level if I could download more tiles!
App locked up on stream, used OnX to navigate way.
First time I actually tried to use the app in a steam situation. App locked up and wouldn’t open past the blue screen. I just switched to OnX and used it the rest of the day. Now I’m not sure why I even purchased the Trout app. I had to restart the phone to get the app to work correctly once I was back in town. I also was surprised to find that the app doesn’t identify property lines and owners like OnX once I was able to work with it in town. Am I missing something?
Still no Canada
I would probably use this unfortunately there is no info on Canada. People come from all over the world to trout fish in BC.
Dang good app
Honestly a game changer.
Everything is behind a paywall.
Don’t even waste your time, greed is a disgusting thing.
Hard to see icons
Something has changed and now you have to zoom in too far to even see a fly shop. I don’t like how small the icons have gotten.
Should expand area
I was excited to use this app but it doesn’t work in Canada I suggest expanding it here, a lot more people will use it.
Need Canadian Content!
3 Stars just to try not to skew the rating. I haven’t used to app. I do use the onX Hunt app though and the Canadian content on that has improved over recent years. Hopefully this app will follow
A must have
Absolutely love this app. I fish in Wisconsin’s driftless area where there’s limited cell service at times. That means no maps, etc to help orient to where you are. TroutRoutes must be satellite, tho I’m no tech kind of guy. No matter where I’m at, I can see in real time as I move upstream. Then add in that they show parking, easements, even limits….as that changes from stream to stream. I could go on and on. Suffice to say, TroutRoutes rocks! Thanks guys
At least give a 24 hour trial
Why would I spend $25-50 when I don’t even know if it will be useful. Let people demo the full access features. The basic app might as well be the map app on my phone.
Integrate it with OnX Maps
Needs to be integrated with OnX Maps. There’s no need for there to be two separate apps
Canada!!!!!
App looks great but was wishing to see maps for Canada
Great resource for avid fishermen
Great time-saving resource. Packed with information essential to planning successful outing near hom
Alaska
Doesn’t work in AK unfortunately
Canada Access
The app is good quality but having no Canadian maps really doesn’t allow for you to reach an audience of anglers who mostly or exclusively trout fish.
Canada!!
Seems like a good app but has no Canada content
Super helpful
We are at a point that Class 1 plus waters are all we need. This app helps us find those and all the put ins and take outs we need
Not Accessible
Recently invested in the pro version and for the past month the ap has been inaccessible. Expected better for the price paid.
Seems ok if you live in an area listed in their maps
This seems like a great idea, but is very limited in the areas it covers. Need to have more geographical areas covered. I would suggest expanding to Canada, specifically SW Alberta and Southern BC, both home to some of the best fly fishing locations in the world.
Keeps getting worse
App won’t even open anymore. And when it did, it needed a data connection. Couldn’t use it on the river with no cellular data. Kinda pointless.
Don’t waste your money
The app doesn’t provide any information. And for the streams around me the information is completely useless.
