What people like
- Great for absolute beginners
- Teaches tablature clearly
- Good variety of songs
What they complain about
- App crashes and glitches constantly
- Expensive compared to other apps
- Lessons feel stiff and corporate
Could be better
Super hard to read the notes for feedback mode. Not as fan as other apps. Disappointed and will go to other apps
Didn’t know were many songs were
I just started playing bass and I was trying to search for basic songs like seven nation army but it was like it wasn’t on there
Great for beginners but..
So I didn’t use my 3 month I got from guitar center when I got my bass immediately so I self taught myself the basics and other stuff and now all the lessons are a little too easy and I don’t know which ones to skip and which one I need to know.
Meh
Ok for very basic beginners. Feedback mode leaves a lot to be desired.
Nice app but missing audio interface support
Overall, nice app. The parts of the app that rely on the microphone are twitchy though. I wish it supported my audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett = super popular) so that the guitar input would be noise free. Yousican support it, so have been using that app more as a result. Happy to share more, if needed.
I recommend this app
I’ve only just started at nine years old and I have a acoustic guitar I got for Christmas 2025 and I’d say fender is a really good app for learning how to play guitar especially for whenever you’re pretty young like me so yeah, I’d say five stars really good app And I recommend it.
8.0 Feedback Mode Mess
Everything was working fine until the 8.0 release. Now previous scores are wiped, new 100% scores are shown as 1%, and some lessons cannot hear the notes at all, or claim that the wrong bass string(!) was played or the beat was off. There’s a lot of 0% scores from new lessons for me moving forward. I’m waiting for them to fix this mess which they do not openly acknowledge. Support explains the moving of Feedback Mode, and advises to reinstall the app. What a crock!
Great app
There are some bugs in feedback mode but in general great for beginners
Buggy and unusable
All audio, including metronome, does not work when doing the Practice and Feedback portions of My Path.
Glitchy
I’m trying this app to learn guitar. It has some nice features and provides a learning path with lessons, practice and feedback. The problem is the app is just very glitchy. It has crashed on my eve. Using the feedback feature. I’m unable to change the learning path level beyond level 1. I’ve tried the app on both my iPhone and iPad, these problems persist on both devices. If it was a stable and reliable app, I would continue using it. But it’s not worth paying the subscription with these impediments. For those looking for specific songs, the songs available are limited. I see a lot from Metallica. But then there are zero songs from other artists: U2, Johnny Cash.
Fun and user friendly experience!
As someone starting their guitar journey in their late 30s this app is extremely user friendly! It gets you playing very fast, with amazing teachers who explain the courses well. The videos are short, and it’s perfect for someone like me since I’ll spend 30 minutes after the class to really perfect what I learned
Update screwed up the feedback mode
The latest update added feedback mode to practice mode. First problem is that it doesn’t record my score. The bigger problem is that I can no longer use AirPods for listening to the track and iPad microphone for listening to my playing. It is all either iPad or AirPod and AirPods only hear voice. Notes aren’t recognized. This is a colossal screw up by fender.
Seems ok if a bit stilted
Haven’y gotten very far but it seems promising, and it looks like an intuitive interface. Can’t help noticing though that several of the tutors, although seemingly highly knowledgeable, come across as a bit awkward and stilted, and display a kind of manic, forced smile, which feels a little distracting, and perhaps just a bit creepy. But I still think there might be good knowledge to gain. Hopefully they will manage to relax somewhat as I progress.
Errors
I have mostly enjoyed the app but occasionally there will be a glaring error in the instructions that doesn’t make sense or I feel needs correcting. I’ve wrote feedback to the app designers before but no one ever replies.
Multiple plays
When rewinding, to replay, it will randomly start to play from the beginning but overlay over the original. So you end up with multiple plays.
Good for beginners
if we could have more songs it would be nice, besides that this is a great app and teaches great exercises to practice and the results show if you take the time to learn.
8.x Launch Is A Disaster
Launch of 8.X is a disaster! It deleted my progress history, high scores, and won’t even grade my performance any longer. I hope that Fender fixes the app soon.
Great app so far.
The app is very nice to use. It’s nice that I can cast videos to my tv when practicing. Could use some organization in the skills tab (exercises, techniques, etc). Everything’s just kinda thrown in there.
Not actually free though
It’s not free. Just make it paid from the get go.
Should be called Metallica Play
How about some more variety and less Metallica.. add some more rock songs please.
Fender Play is incredible
Fender Play is a great option for learning electric guitar. There are songs, chords, and, unlike Simply Guitar, it actually teaches you tablature. There is one bug, however, and that’s sometimes when I play a video for a course, it glitches and plays the audio from the start while continuing to play the audio from where I’m at, and the video is just frozen. I just restart the app when that happens, but if you could fix it that would be great. Anyway, I just wanted to say I found an easier way to play Enter Sandman, the third riff on the course I’m currently doing. You play open low E 3 times, then you play the 6th fret on low E, then the 5th fret, then repeat, but on each repeat play the first low E 4 times. That’s how I found it easier to play. Can you see why I call myself the Overranter? Sorry for making you read, whoever sees this.
Monthly bills
Doesn’t mention anywhere that it’s a monthly paid service until after you give them your information
Update broke the tabs
I really like the app but today all the chord diagrams have disappeared. I tried on my iphone and ipad, updated the app, same thing. Disappointing...
Decent content but technically glitchy
As a beginner, I’m finding the content pretty good; straightforward to follow, a clear structure to the lessons, and variety. However, I’m finding it glitchy, regularly hanging and the metronome, count in and backing track (in the practice section) don’t work. This would be tolerable in a free app, but I’ve paid a subscription!
Glitches in favorites
I like to save the feedback mode in my favorites to play later with the right tempo but it won’t open or play feedback mode from favorites…I have to go hunt down where the song is in the app. Really annoying.
Great App for Beginners
I love the app and has helped me start my journey to playing guitar. The easy to follow lessons are great for beginners to intermediate players. I looked at other learning options and found myself always going back to this app for the best learning and comprehension. Love it.
Fender = BAD
Corpo is not Rock and Roll. Suing in bad faith because you failed is what losers do. Leo was a master, Fender is a business and does not care anout you or your music.
Grown up, decent, but a bit stilted.
I got this after completing Simply Guitar and Justin Guitar, both to explore guitar further and to learn bass. I’ve subsequently subscribed to Yousician too and, stating the obvious, that does mean Fender is in a crowded field. All of these apps offer free test weeks. I would seriously recommend trying each to see what works for you. What Fender Play excels at is its guitar tabs, and some aspects of learning. It has much more theory than Simply Guitar, but generally packages this fairly well. It is useful theory (I think this was the first app that compelled me to learn which notes I was playing, instead of just “fingers go there”). I find the structure a bit stilted. A rolling cohort of slightly awkward videos with slightly awkward presenters give slightly laboured talks before you progress within each lesson. This is much better than the unbelievably patronising cool hip generic young person of simply guitar, but works much less well than Justin’s personable and conversational approach. I gave up on the fender videos after a while. Lessons are sensibly structured, with decent progress through them. I may have suffered from coming to them with some level of knowledge, but I did find myself skipping straight to skills (a separate section) and songs (a genuinely good list for bass and guitar). In three (?) months, I’ve played a good variety of the bass songs on offer. The skill level on this does cap out. I’ve been playing bass for a few months now (entirely fender or guitar tabs, no other app learning), and can comfortably ace the three star difficulty songs after a practice run or two. They’re enjoyable to ace, but having just downloaded Yousician I’m aware that I’m struggling on their level 7 songs, and it appears to go to level 14. I definitely have a sense that fender play stops at the periphery of basic competence. Last comment - there are some tracks here that provide feedback on your performance. Particularly with bass, there are also lots that don’t. I was glad to start with simply guitar because of this, because it does have a (ok slightly broken) instant feedback mechanism. Yousician does this better still. So, yeah. Your call. For me, this is a bit bland (corporate?) and lacking in personality, but provides some good basic skills. The lesson structure doesn’t have the “one more song…” drive I’ve found in other apps, but perhaps I just like shiny three-starring whizzbangs and all the little head pats that come from the gamification present in other apps (Yousician, simply guitar). And Justin is great for the song catalogue (entirely rhythm, barely any lead) and just being really personable.
Buggy
The sub is okay, the 7 stage lesson plan could be completed in the two week trial with daily practice. Many of the songs offered are not really the full version or are adopted for beginners, which is good and bad. Would rather see what Garageband did with simplified and advanced versions. Worse is that the app is very buggy and will crash when you open the Feedback mode (unless it is the first activity you go to after launch). Sometimes the tabs also glitch and sections will appear blank (likely related to moving through the video if you skip forward or back to replay a section).
A bit disjointed
Consistency is a key part of any teaching, and therefore on only the 2nd lesson of a huge course when the teacher changed to someone completely different, I was immediately thrown off and distracted. Since then, I’ve watched around 15 lessons and I don’t think I’ve seen the same tutor twice… this is not great. Not only does it make the course feel disjointed and patchwork, but ppl need to form a connection to their tutor and this doesn’t happen here.
Fender play
Enjoying this so far, lessons seem to be well structured and I like the way each session rounds off with a song so you feel you are making progress, and when weighed up with what one on one lessons would cost not bad value Update, now in second year, still enjoying it.

Would of been 5
Excellent app you learn so much in a short space of time. Would of been 5* If i wasn't having to watch some woman with a beard play the guitar sends shivers through my spine.
Expensive and limited
So far I'm far from impressed. $25/month, limited songs, and it doesn't even show you songs from the genre you select when you set it up. Most of my favourite musicians are not on it although they are very popular.
👍🏾👍🏾
They took money from my account even though I wasn’t subscribed for a week and didn’t teach me how to set up my guitar properly and when I made mistakes on th first practice mode they don’t tell me how to make it better so I don’t recommend if it’s your first ever guitar
Just got this app
Im new to the electric guitar and already love ing it !!! This app is easy to use and easy to follow. Recommended to everyone!!
Doesn’t work!
Despite everything being up to date, app closes automatically after silly entry survey. Utterly useless! Canceled subscription!!
Fine
Fine app
2 Stars. Scam?
This app used to be so good. I taken the courses and the were very good. When I come to renew my subscription, for £49.96 the app didn’t work. Payment went through on my card, Apple report a problem says it’s not eligible for refund and fender play support is trash. Will be calling Apple soon to get a refund. Unimpressed
Basic
Would be better if they added harder songs
Helping me to improve guitar
Fender play is amazing! As a beginner a few years ago I found it really hard to learn a new song but when I started learning with fender I enjoyed it so much I started a band!!!
What a waste
I downloaded this after using the Gibson app, because there seemed to be a better song list. After trying it, there is no live feedback or gamification of any of the songs. I don’t know why I would pay 150 a year to get tabs and video lessons only. I can get what this offers for free in tons of other resources. Oh well.
Left handed
Does this app teach left handed players
Looking at changing to Gibson
I like the lessons and selection of songs. Their app is easier to use.
Annoying
When you select skills and chords for the uke it is fine until you tap ‘show all’ and it then shows guitar chords
Fantastic App
I have been using this app for about 4 years now. It is so good in many ways. The amount of songs you can learn, the genres of music such as rock, pop, blues etc. The amount of music bands, soloists is fantastic. Some songs are made easier which is great for beginners. They show technique’s. The different era’s are great as well such as the 60s 70s 80s to modern day.
7.4.5 will not work, closes every time
Downloaded nestest app version today on iPad OS 26.2.1. App thinks I am a new user and goes through the startup questions. On the fourth screen, “What path interests you right now?” the app closes. Have uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted the iPad, tried multiple times but not able to start the app beyond those four screens. If this does not get fixed quickly I would like a refund.
Teeny tiny chords
For phone users, needs bigger chord name/labels on the practice screens.
Wrong aspect ratio for iPad mini 6th gen
It’s a good app but has the wrong aspect ratio for the 6th Gen iPad mini, it doesn't take up all the available space on the screen and The music sheets are also very small since they designed for screens around 11 inches not 7
Confusing subscription rates
The app itself is great, but on signing up there is a monthly rate of £17.99, which is far more than I’ve seen elsewhere. If you look in “in app purchases” there seem to be a range of much cheaper sub options (with no explanation if they are any different). You can switch to them in “manage subscription”. It all seems a bit underhanded
