So much fun
I want to be a singer, but I feel like I need to learn an instrument. So me and my dad looked on the App Store and tried it out. It’s still my first day and I feel like I have learned so much.
Definitely NOT free!
You have to pay for like almost everything! How am I supposed to learn if I can’t take lessons!
Using the app to relearn
Played guitar for 30 years then took an 8 year hiatus. I’m using the app to clear the cobwebs and maybe learn some stuff I didn’t know in the first 30 years. It’s really great for working on your timing, finger strength, muscle memory and coordination between your right and left hands. I’m working on lessons below my ability but I am enjoying slowly easing back in. Doing a deep dive on the minor pentatonic scales right now. I never knew all the scale shapes, extended shapes and how to find them easily from each end of the neck and in between. I’m learning all of that as I tune up my playing ability. The ai analysis is really good too. Gives you detailed information on your playing. Worth every bit of the subscription price. Can see this being a good tool for beginners as well. Lots and lots of different sessions available to cover an extreme amount of topics! Highly recommend!
Good but not instructive
It seems to be a good video game style of learning if you can already play guitar, but it isn’t great for beginners. There’s no consistency between stages, suddenly you jump to something you have no clue how to do and the app is just saying do this now, then this, then this. No explanation of how. Then it is so difficult to navigate, like finding your way around a maze. And goodness help you if you lose your place, or go away for a few days and have to backtrack, or if you quit and later need to start again, you haven’t got a hope of finding your way. There’s a lot of content but it isn’t great badly organized and very frustrating for the beginner, completely sapping confidence.
It’s okay but
It would definitely be a decent app if it wasn’t all behind a massive paywall you get about three lessons not even three like maybe one big lesson and that’s it. You can’t learn the actual important stuff it all behind a paywall all you learn how to do is as much as one or two frets and that’s it. Everything else is behind the payroll. How are you supposed to learn if everything‘s behind a paywall you can’t provide yourself from being a free app with literally everything on the app that’s useful is behind a paywall You’re not a free app you might as well just ask to have money you might as well go and make the app cost money instead of saying it’s free and then put everything behind the payroll. That’s just stupid. It’s hypocritical if you want to actually help people then why not give more lessons you’re literally teaching me how to do two frets and that’s it 2345 Fritz and boom you gotta pay the rest of it. You can’t learn the basics like it’s like learn the basics but you can’t even learn the basics. You can’t even learn how to hold a pic before it offers you paywall which is so stupid to me because you can’t pride yourself and being a free app playing guitar and then everything you have on the app is behind a paywall that’s not helpful at all. You’re better off costing money.
Get this app
I took a chance about a year and a half ago. After years of lessons and tutorials I was still missing something and started the Gibson app and can’t say enough about how good it is and how it’s helped me progress in my home on my time and sooo many things you can do that keeps you focused and having fun 🤘🏼 .
What am I missing?
I see all these reviews about how much people like the app, but I don’t get it. Couldn’t get past the tuning page without killing the app and skipping it. I am not even 30 mins, and fully blocked by the “7-day trial”. What is the point of a 7-day trial when I can get past a few mins/few lessons. Why are you forcing screen rotation? Not allowing it to rotate as I need is severely hampering (the headphone cord goes the wrong direction and gets tangled with my guitar. I’ve been playing guitar for many years, so I selected “intermediate”. First lesson? Here’s how to make your first note: pluck the thinnest string at the first fret! Why ask if you are going to ignore it. I am all for these kinds of apps and I would gladly pay for it, but not with these basic UI/UX problems and certainly not when I am given a 7-day trial that blocks after 30 mins.
Restart
I love this app its very easy but when i go back and try tohit resume spmetimes i hit the restart button and it restarts all my progress and ita very annoying, please make more space beyween the resume and restart button
Where are the 10K Songs and Lessons?
The song list is a barren wasteland. I thought, “surely, with ten thousand songs and lessons I will be able to practice some reels and jigs.” The ad is misleading.
Subscription
It’s such an amazing app but the fact that you have to buy everything now a days turns me down from practicing at all!!
Great App, Veterans Discount
After a free trial I was hooked! They have a generous veterans discount and the staff and support team is very helpful.
Update messed everything up
I tried every way with my Positive Grid Riff to get the digital amp version of Gibson to work and it did absolutely nothing. All I do now is practice with a dry, clean sound from Bias FX, because I won’t hop back and forth between apps to get the right sound every time I practice or play something different. That’s annoying.
Orientation
One really bad thing about this app is you can’t choose the way the orientation is aka in other words the usbc always has to be on left and id rather it be on right… really bothers me tbh
It’s costly….. but….
Being transparent right up front. I give it two stars for the reason being the price for a year subscription, not having good/reliable phone/data service the app requires for a smooth experience and not having had much availability to use the app as I had hoped for. In the last 10 months of having paid $139.09 for the year sub, I’ve probably spent less than 20hrs of use, maybe even less. That’s no fault to Gibson. I just wasn’t expecting such a chaotic turn of events in life shortly after buying a guitar and then the app. But the high price of the yearly cost and what very little time I’ve been able to spend enjoying the app, it leaves me feeling regrettable for paying for the app when I did. As well, the app does require a reliable data point. And where I had been living through the last ten months, My data service was awful only having 1 bar of signal. So the app would struggle loading videos and songs and practice material etc. Again, no fault to Gibson. But simply another reason I feel regrettable for paying as much as I did for the app and not being able to use it without connection issues when I would get the time to sit down and use the app. With that said, as far as the app itself. I feel like the app does bring a solid foundation to a beginner guitar player and up. The play along structure is well laid out and makes it easy to follow along and uses a good mix of switching patterns up as in once you start feeling good using a certain finger or or fret after a few similar measures, it switches it briefly using different frets or fingers then jumping right back to what you started feeling dialed in on, giving you a quick “are you sure you got it?” Type approach making it more likely you’ll retain the teachings. Not only does it focus on a beginner approach, it also has extra video material that shows you how to take care of your guitar. How to restring, tuning and so on. The song you get to learn along with are songs most of us actually know. Not just some weird song just to play along with which brings more excitement into learning the guitar. Gibson really is offering a wonderful app and I’d love to actually invest time into the app and feel as if I’m getting what I’ve paid for. My approach to this app being simply the price as I don’t have much of a disposable income sadly. But it’s what makes it a difficult choice if I want to renew my subscription come July or if I consider it a loss and use cheaper options or YT like many others. If you find yourself having plenty of time to invest with the app, I believe you’ll truly learn a great deal from this app. You’ll also want to make sure you have reliable internet service on your device to avoid load failures as this app relies heavily on a good stable network connection.
Good but
This app is definitely pretty cool however on the sections where there is more than one song to play it restarts your entire lesson. Seems like a bug.
Fun app
Super fun to play along with my new les Paul.
REALLY THINKING ABOUT THE SUB PLAN
I have been trying for weeks to play whatever so I want from basic and melody so I can get better but the app won’t let me even though I have finished the lessons to be where I am. I do not want to move forward until I’m comfortable but it will not let me tap the song to play like it did my first week.
I like it but…..
I really like the app. I’ve been playing guitar for almost a year but only recently started using this app. I feel likes it’s really helping me progress. I don’t remember seeing anything about paying extra for the real songs within the app. I’ve been getting notifications that my trial for the known songs will be running out soon. I’m already paying for the app to learn guitar. Obviously part of that is wanting to learn how to play known I like. Your a guitar company that is offering for a fee an app to help learn guitar…. Safe to say it if I get decent at playing guitar I’m going to buy more guitars. Am I going to look at the guitar company with a good app that really helped me get to that point for a fair price? Or am I going to be discouraged by the guitar company with an app that nickel and dimes me every step of the way?
Decent
Good for beginners but needs more work for advanced. It jumps from super easy lessons to really hard ones with no rhyme or reason. The speeds are not very adjustable for practicing new licks. The slowest speed is faster than I’d like to learn a new complicated riff. They have completely given up on lessons and thrown everything into guides which are often really boring to play through. They don’t release by skill level so again some are too easy then it’ll jump to difficult. The amount of lessons for intermediate guitar players is really lacking
Not for me
I’m a somewhat lapsed guitarist having not picked up an axe for ages and getting back into it, (my callouses are gone so I have sore fingertips and had to buy a nail clipper before touching a fret. Previously I would say I was intermediate, certainly not a virtuoso but able to follow tabs and chords. I find Gibson to be too fast, too complicated, starting with Bryan Adam’s “Run to you” at what seemed like breakneck speed, I slowed it right down but still struggled with the format of the guitar highway which did not feel natural. It was only after investigation I found that the colours of the notes corresponded to the fingering required! Maybe it’s just me and my learning style, but it does not work for me? I have previously used RockSmith, Fender, SImplyGuitar and others but thought I’d try something new this time. Sadly, Gibson is not the one and so I shall have to cancel my subscription before the trial period ends as I cannot see me continuing with it. Sorry Gibson, we’re just not a good match. If it works for you, fabulous… We all have our own learning styles. On a positive note, it works seamlessly with my Minifuse 1 audio interface so I can plug in my Ibanez electric 6-string, so it’s not all bad news I guess?
Outstanding!
5 star all the way - highly recommended
Buggy
For some reason, the game still gives me points for hitting the note right without even playing a note. I’ve had to restart restart my phone close the app twice and it’s still the same.
Put the notes on the licks.
This is by far the best app I’ve tried and I’ve tried all the expensive ones. I just wish they would add the notes on scales instead of just finger shapes for people that want to learn theory.
Won’t work with iRig hdx and iPad
Can’t get this to work with iPad and iRig Hdx. Does anyone know how to configure this to work?
Love the basic tool but don’t love that pricey add ons that round it off
I love this app it covers the basics well and I’m hoping that the game aspect will help an aging gamer like me. The interface is great and easy to use. That said, the add on pricing for the more modern and well known sounds is a serious drawback. Charging such a high price for feature that other well known apps includes standard feels o a bit of an ask. Especially when the phase app is quite a highly priced subscription. If the pricing model were more reasonable his would have been 5 stars. L
Fundamentally Sound - my goal
I am very pleased with this application. It is afforded me the opportunity to learn all about playing the guitar at my own pace. The competition in the levels encourage you to stick with it and it’s amazing how much I’ve learned just in the two months I’ve been working with the app! I have bought two other online guitar programs which I haven’t touched yet, because I’m just getting so much fundamental benefit from the Gibson app. I will utilize those later on, once I get through this program which may take a few more months.
Timing off
The latency is still really bad I use my own eye don’t pay attention to the red green miss versus hit. Works a lot better. Can’t get an update either my phone don’t automatically update.
48 and just. Started
Worth the price. This app has helped me achieve my dream of playing. I get to learn to play the songs I like to hear. I followed the lessons for over a year and recently went back to play them and was floored how easy it was. As a beginner you don’t know how much you’re improving because you are listening for mistakes. I would love to be able to record a video while playing songs on the app. And also would love to see lyrics, while playing to help get me over that hump too.
Need to pay
All I can do in this is go up to playing 2 frets at the same time then it tells me to pay
Extra cost for Popular Songs
Purchased the app and really enjoying the set up and lesson by lesson development. I particularly enjoyed the extra practice playing along to known songs. Great and exciting, fun way to develop. One month in - locked out of all extra well known songs and asked to pay extra on top of the £100 yearly subscription. Down to licensing costs apparently. Poor - and a big money grab from a big corp. very poor.
Great tool
Great app or all levels
Begs for reviews
If your app begs for reviews in the middle of doing what your app is supposed to do, then you get 1 star, regardless of how good the app is otherwise.
Upgrade subscription
How can I upgrade subscription? I have the yearly but want to add the famous songs without having to pay for the entire package again. Thx.
expensive
cab onky go half way through one lesson then have to pay
Ukulele
Do you have lessons on the App for ukulele?
Excellent app and customer service
My wife and I recently retired and have both decided to learn to play guitar. The Gibson app has been wonderful, both in its content and the way in which it presents the material and assesses one’s progress. I had a question regarding the app and sent a note to customer support on a Saturday evening. On Monday morning a response from the support team was waiting for me in my inbox. The email was very helpful and thorough - somebody took time to write that email. That impressed me a lot. It’s an excellent app supported by an obviously excellent team.
Stuck with headphones and phone mic
I’m not a fan of the game style learning. I was using another app like this a while back and realized that i was learning to watch a screen instead of listening to keep time. I’ll be bc stick with truefire and Justin. When I want to learn a song I’ll use songster.
Great app, helps you learn full songs and more
Edit: I had an issue with the app where songs were disappearing and the support team was very responsive and helped resolving the issue, the app had unfortunately changed my region on both devices it was installed. Ready to rock again, added one more star Would be 5 stars if less expensive and in few more optimizations e.g. in lessons, sometimes UX could be improved so you don’t click skip so many times or watch an intro leading to not much. Chapters and in the video lessons would be also helpful even though it’s already helpfully broken down
Meh
I think the app is decent. I’ve been using it a few months now (waiting for the goods songs to come up), and have a come a long ways. However, any experienced players advice to you, will be to learn and play songs you like. But this app only has trash songs that no one even recognizes. So for that, I lost interest and switched apps.
Nice Idea
I like it, great instructors but just too expensive for me.
God send
I’m learning faster with this app.
Don’t Fall for Gibson’s Guitar Lessons App – Beautiful App, Crooked Billing Practices
I purchased a Gibson guitar subscription to learn how to play, initially signing up for what I believed was a single annual plan. After paying $129.99, I started the seven-day trial to evaluate the service. The very next day, I received an email from Gibson offering a “special” subscription for just $90.99. Grateful to stay within my budget, I accepted what appeared to be a better deal — and immediately canceled the original seven-day trial. What followed was a textbook example of deceptive and predatory billing practices. Despite canceling the trial right away, it refuses to be removed from my account, and Gibson is now insisting on billing me the full $129.99. Meanwhile, I was also charged the $90.99. I am now saddled with two separate annual subscriptions—totaling over $220—neither of which I can cancel or access properly. When I contacted Gibson directly, I was told they could do nothing. They’ve outsourced the service to some third-party company in Europe, and their hands are conveniently “tied” by contract. Despite my repeated emails to this mysterious European entity, I’ve received zero response. Gibson, a respected American brand, has effectively washed its hands of the entire customer service nightmare they created. This is outrageous. While the app itself may be solid (it currently holds a 4.8-star rating), the company’s predatory billing tactics and complete abdication of responsibility are disgraceful. Trapping customers in non-cancellable subscriptions through opaque overseas partners — even after they cancel a trial in good faith — is not just poor business, it’s deeply unethical. I’ve disputed the $90.99 charge with Apple Card, but fighting the original $129.99 is proving equally frustrating. At this point, I’ve been left with no choice but to abandon Gibson’s platform entirely and resort to free YouTube tutorials. Consider this a warning: Gibson’s guitar training app may look appealing, but their billing practices are a nightmare. Think twice before handing over your money.
Really nice app but doesn't really work with my guitar
I'm using an old epiphone with new strings but it sadly doesn't work with it i've tried putting my phone real close to my guitar and it still reads incorrectly :(
I wish it was better
It’s not that bad but it does jump all over the place I was going to subscribe then when I got to power chords and melody part it jumped all over the place didn’t even show step by step how to do power chords so this app is a no for me .
Loads of paywall features
Decent app BUT SO MUCH BEHIND A PAY WALL. You can only do so many lessons a day (not many) and I’m not sure if you can even do the songs, but if you do lessons you them can’t do songs. The next day you can do more, but if your on a tight schedule, wouldn’t recommend
Unbelibable experience!
Other platforms base themself on made up songs, and a bunch of confused techniques, Gibson app is base on real music learning material. Stuff that make sense to your ears.
All fluff
Want to get strung along by a bunch of flashy BS? This is the app for you. This is like a budget airline with the nickel and diming, but worse. Buyer beware.
Measure/beat markers
I love this app for practicing guitar, and I think it’s totally worth the subscription. But I can’t understand why it still doesn’t have beat or measure markers?? This would make it so much easier to look ahead as you’re playing and anticipate the upcoming riffs, and seems like a no-brainer to add. Hopefully someday it gets added, then it’ll be five stars for me.
Frozen App
I have used app for a while enjoyed it but now the app freezes at new song selections. I can’t close go back or do anything. Have turned off phone deleted app and reinstalled yet problem persists. Not sure if it’s the latest update or what but may be needing a refund if I can’t use it Please advise
Not available to family share
App appears to be a good app. Although you are only able to do 1 lesson a day on the free user version. The app is not available to family share which makes the app over priced for those who have more then one child wanting to learn.
