Truly like being in class at a major university
Keep losing the scans and having to rescan.
Keep losing the scans and having to rescan. Favoriting is and holding onto museum is hard. Keeps sending me back to new museums in other parts of the world when trying to be present. not obvious. Poor UX
Super cool!
I am new to this app but I really like it already - what an awesome way to explore lots of cool places, exhibits, and experiences! Only suggestion - I wish you could search by location (e.g. “London”) and have everything come up. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out where things are located (e.g. there are several “National Gallery” listings and it’s hard to figure out which is in London vs the US vs other places.)
Less than expected
I just tried to identify a Basquiat, and this app could not ID it.
Lovely when it works
Very cool when it happens to have a painting in its database, which it usually doesn’t. E.g. some paintings in the Yale Center for British Art, but none of its Canalettos.
Excellent app
Especially in a crowded gallery where it’s hard to read the boards, or the print is too small - or you want to know more about a painting, Smartify is brilliant.

Access to Photos Denied
One of the great features of earlier versions allowed you to go to a photo you had taken in a gallery and get the description of the work of art. I wonder why it was removed

I had a poor experience of this tour - video tour wouldn’t open for me. Maybe site wifi poor?
Pros & Cons
(Applicable to a previous version as NOW NO LONGER FUNCTIONS, just closes immediately after opening. Jan ‘26 Please fix!) Agree absolutely with another reviewer citing inconsiderate users blocking other viewers & not actually appreciating the art in front of them. But an important caveat for those like myself whose age has dimmed their sight and rendered their near vision focus useless: I am now unable to read labels in galleries or museums (especially behind glass or in dim lighting) unless it’s EXTREMELY close AND I remove my glasses. Can see either the exhibit OR the accompanying info, and obviously choose the art… Which is where Smartify has been of discreet use to seek more detail about a piece. I found it transformative for a casual visit, to add the brief detail that I used to be able to see at a glance of the label of anything I found particularly appealing or interesting. Though so far not actually encountered that often, availability was prominently signed in those galleries offering it. Please could the app update check & inform whether available before visiting sites in future? Perhaps an interactive map? Even just by user feedback…I’ll start by saying Smartify worked well for me at The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle - thank you!

Art Bias
Sounded like a great app. I used the widget thinking I would see new works of art every day and have an opportunity to explore diverse artists and pieces. However, the widget algorithm seemed fixated on and promoted one artist who I would see invariably 80% of the time both on my iPhone and on my iPad when I looked at the widget, a Kristina Belkina. I didn't find her works that remarkable to justify that, especially when there's a world of great art out there. I actually wrote to Smartify and commented on this through their email link. I never heard back; no response or explanation. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited a month to see if things would change, and it only seemed to get worse. I deleted the app today and, of course, the widget with it. Curious, I've read some of the other reviews here with many complaining about the scanning feature, which is a primary feature and what they promote when advertising their app. As an artist, I would never lean into a bias towards one particular artist, unless it was a featured artist of the month or some such thing. I call this bad form on the part of Smartify and it wouldn't take much for them to do better.

This app is weak on some of the most famous prints. For example, dancers at Bossier Ville, as well as other prints from Monet to Bergeron.

Won’t recognize anything
Attempted to identify a painting I have had for years. Using the scan it just states cannot recognize. So I used it on some well known paintings and artists, get the same response.

Poor Tour
Used this recently for an audio tour of an exhibition. Whilst the content, narrated by the artist, was great, the app was painful to use. When you go to the playlist to select a track for an artwork, auto play is enabled. So it will start playing the next track which might be for artwork in a different room. Auto play is re-enabled every time, overriding your preference. But worst of all, the audio stops playing when your screen auto locks. You have to constantly unlock your screen and resume playback. That’s a complete fail for an audio tour!

I’ve only used it, or rather tried to use it 3-4 times but it has never “worked”. Not sure where I’m going wrong. Frustrating.

I like this app! The scanner works, I get to save my favorite paintings and artists… many paintings come with a blurb, even shows where they’re on display, plus the app looks good :) The search function did take me a few tries to figure out. Say I look up Monet, then Fragonard, the app would search for Fragonard in Monet works 😅

A GRM - lacking
The Smartify integration at the Royal Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England is atrocious. It is horrible. It would be better if it didn’t exist. There are insufficient QR codes (as such, when the app crashes – – you have to go hunting for a QR code… possibly at the main entrance). If there are bar codes - they don’t trigger a specific chapter, but rather set you to the start again. The ASL videos are unavoidable and use up cellular data (the Wi-Fi doesn’t work at the museum and cell service is exceptionally problematic). There’s no way to download individual pieces and to download the whole thing (over cell) takes longer than it takes to actually listen to it. Some of the videos start playing without any audio. In some of the videos stop playing for 14 seconds regardless. All in all, it’s a museum ruiner. Turns out my sister had an identical experience of the street at the Royal observatory using a Samsung phone even though I had been on an iPhone. So the issue is cross platform.
Okay in Parts
I find the app very clunky and not very intuitive. I haven’t had the confidence to buy anything from the shop or get exhibition tickets as yet.

Absolutely worthless
I scanned several oil paintings that had been previously identified by appraisers and authenticators and this app did not ID a single one of them. Don’t waste your time. It’s a joke.

No replacement for an audio guide
This encourages tech mediated looking at art, and the info is dry relative to a curator’s voice. Bring back audio guides.

Pratique de pouvoir télécharger avant d’aller au musée… quelques bugs et problèmes d’incompatibilité avec les écouteurs personnels. Et le moteur de recherche dans l’application est clairement défaillant.

It Knows Nothing
I’ve had Smartify for about a month now and of the 45 or so items I have scanned, it has no information at all on any of them, yet I was able to do a search online myself and find out what most of them were. I’m deleting the app.

I have no idea how this works. I point the scan area and nothing works. No instructions either.

They removed the photo upload feature. this app sometimes doesn’t work in the museum because of signal or bad wifi etc. so what i used do was take a photo and use the photo upload feature to scan, but now they have it removed and have to use google arts and culture to find artworks instead

The Write a Review dialog keeps popping up
The Write a Review dialog has popped up three times now in the five minutes I’ve tried to use the app. It’s very intrusive. So I’m writing a review with the hopes this stops it. The app is alright, not amazing (the AR artworks seem glitchy) but I would have probably given a higher rating had I not felt forced to by the app.

Mais je préférerais payer et avoir une bonne qualité d’image. —- The concept is absolutely outstanding. This app has major potential, congratulations to the developer. Unfortunately the images are low resolution. For a visual arts application this is hardly appropriate. EDIT: Thanks for making this app free. But I would prefer to pay and have high (or... higher) quality images.
