Great replacement for Google Maps
Since Google Timeline got functionally difficult, this is a great replacement. Probably not a good idea anyway to let Google track your every movement anyway. This takes a bit more work to identify places, but you often had to do that with Google Maps anyway. Recommended!
Developer harassed me on Twitter and via email
Developer harassed me on Twitter and threatened me via email for posting a 1 star review. I have the receipts to prove it. He also seems to report negative reviews to Apple to have it removed. Just look at all of his responses to negative reviews. He insults customers and can't seem to take negative reviews seriously.
Solid app, sudden paywall could be explained better
I had to find the reason for suddenly blocking the app until payment in another negative review about the app being blocked by payment. I get it, and wouldn’t want the dev to lose money over a free utility. I was worried that my data was suddenly inaccessible, but the dev answered that I could pick a subscription and cancel during the free trial. Just seems wonky. Also, there’s no mention of the privacy policy of the Foursquare APIs that became abruptly expensive. I hope the reason they’re not mentioned is that they’re not identifying. The tool itself is pretty good. Helps identify places, maps points of interest and walking paths nicely, accurately, and without a huge battery hit. I quite enjoy it for traveling, but unfortunately I don’t do it often enough to justify monthly payment to view my past trips when I want to recommend spots to a friend. I’d probably have to renew my subscription every time I want to see the app, which likely will mean I won’t end up doing so and only subscribe on trips. I wonder if a mode to view past trips without Foursquare APIs could be viable. If you’re checking the app for the first time, like exploring places and tracking where you’ve been, I’d highly recommend subscribing to it.
Great idea executed awkwardly
Despite the app insisting I walk faster than 35mph and sleep in a parking lot, it’s useful nonetheless. Now there are two of it!
False bike readings
I’m not sure if it’s because this app records speed as an average over time (thus including time stopped in traffic) but it keeps recording bicycle rides even I’m driving (and sometimes when I’m walking). It’s a little more than annoying to have to edit every single time.
This is AMAZING!
Think of Google Timeline, but 1000x better. Same Google features but with: - Much more detail and precision, such as routes you take and the time you completed them. - No performance bugs. - A built-in machine learning algorithm that picks up patterns quickly. - Key stats about your timeline. - Easy backup and export options. - Complete privacy. The cherry on top! To be honest, I’m concerned about battery life. But I haven’t had a problem yet. Kudos to the developer. One more fan in the pool.
Ruined Christmas For My Family
This is abandonware with a subscription model a masterclass in extracting recurring revenue from a neglected product. Developer (Mr. Mattew Bruce Greenfield) continues charging $4.99 monthly for an app he has demonstrably stopped maintaining. The core failure is the so-called "learning engine” which never actually learns. Despite manually correcting hundreds of misidentified trips 30-minute tram commutes repeatedly logged as "walking," walking segments corrupted by phantom "cycling" recordings, the system and machine learning bogus shows zero improvement. The advertised highest accuracy detection is fiction; it cannot distinguish between a bicycle and an airplane moving at vastly different speeds, rendering all statistics meaningless. Battery consumption directly contradicts the developer's claims. The app description promises "low power sleep mode" with GPS deactivated when stationary, yet Arc routinely consumes 40-50% daily battery on an iPhone 15 Pro—effectively requiring mid-day charging for anyone with a two-hour commute. This is not the "morning to evening" performance advertised. Most egregiously, the GPX export function (the only method to retrieve your personal location data) produces corrupted files unreadable by standard mapping tools like QGIS or Google Earth. Your location history is held hostage behind a paywall for an export feature that fundamentally does not work. The support forum is a ghost town; critical bug reports receive no developer response and the developer himself hasn’t been active on his own form in almost a year. When challenged about converting a functional app into a mandatory subscription service, Mr. Greenfield's published response dismisses us: "if you're not willing to pay for this kind of functionality, yes, you will need to look elsewhere." This app’s business plan is a monthly tax on data you generated but cannot reliably access or export all while the developer requires that you give him access to all of it. The last update (January 2025) addressed trivial edge cases while core functionality deteriorates. Do not subscribe. Do not reward this developer for monetizing software he refuses to maintain. Time to sunset this and move on.
11 Months On: Still a great app, some concerns
My initial review 6 months ago gave this app 5 full stars and was rated one of the most helpful reviews. I have used this amazing app every day, but this update has left me somewhat disappointed: This continues to be a cool, useful, and privacy-oriented tracking app, and is one of my all-time favorites. I totally understand, Matt, that you’re only an individual, and indie devs gotta eat too! But man… genuinely consider the average user’s perspective on this update’s delivery: The developer updates the app for the first time in a year to lock your data behind a paywall. No explanation, no warning. No preview of new features. No mention in the changelog. No notes in the App Store description. And it’s not exactly cheap. I know server costs have increased. I know Foursquare is charging a ton for Places. I’m entirely sympathetic to that. But I feel that this is nonetheless an unprofessional way to handle the situation. If the free option is no longer sustainable, you have to let your userbase know. You keep them informed and give clear warning. You give a month for backups, exports, and decisions instead of surprise-paywalling the entire app. (No, the 1-month free trial after signing on to a plan is not the same. It feels slimy, and is rude to existing users for the reasons I’ve mentioned) As I mentioned in my initial review, l'd have been donating more frequently over the past year had we seen updates in that time. I was nervous to give more money than I already had with how Changemap progress seemed nearly frozen since 2019; I came to this app in the first place from an app that had broken on me due to lack of developer support. Now that a paid subscription is mandatory, will we see updates? I’ve seen your reply saying that this app is your full-time job…but dozens of Changemap feature requests have been untouched for 2 or 3 years, and it seems you might’ve only begun to work through the new backlog of requests to approve/reject in the last couple months. Is this project your focus right now? I ask because I’m dying to support this app! I love its function, I love that it’s open source. I admire your commitment to privacy in general. I just don’t know if I can spend so much money if I’m not confident in its continued development. I hope you understand my perspective and know that I say this constructively.
Decent, until my data was held behind a paywall
This app was decent, but now my data is inaccessible due to a paywall. Extremely frustrating that I can’t get my past information off, and it feels like a slimy and disingenuous move. The mediocre and inconsistent tracking has already made me wary of this app, and the data restriction is the nail in the coffin. Do not download this app.
Useful app, insane battery usage
The most recent updates have been accounting for up to forty percent of my battery drain. I have no idea what the issue is. The developer has been unresponsive.
Simply The Best
After using this app for years, I can safely say that it is the best app in the App Store. It is worth every penny for the lifetime subscription.
Crashes Often
Fantastic idea and, when it behaves, best-in-class. But right now it crashes constantly, especially when editing or even just viewing past location data. At $5/month, I’d expect active development: stability fixes and new feature development (not knocking the developer for lack of current features, just trying to justify $60/year). No matter how rich the feature set, an app that can’t stay open can’t be relied on. Sad! The app hasn’t been updated in about 8 months. I respect the developer and the work that clearly went into this, but it’s starting to feel like a neglected project. When it works, it’s great!
Amazing App, No Longer Free (which is fair, it’s really that good)
I’ve used Arc since March 2019 and can honestly say I love it. Has always worked well and reliably. That said this upgrade removes the free tier. Which is fair, devs gotta eat too! But I really think that should have made it into release notes or at least provide users a means to export their data one final time. Also given everything is done locally, it’s hard to mentally justify what $6 a month goes towards at this stage. Again Devs gotta eat! And I’m subscribing!
Good idea but flawed
Since Google Maps is doing some screwy things with their timeline I wanted to try something different to keep track of where I’ve been. I tried this while on a trip, and the app kept being interrupted by iOS, and the explanation was that iOS can interrupt any app at any time. So it always seems to have gaps because of this.
The menu/interface seriously needs a dark option.
Why allow only the map so have a dark version when everything else is retina-burningly bright? Honestly really annoyed this was overlooked.
Perfect app
The app is perfect. I’ve been using it for long years now. I’m enjoying the records and everything single place and activity I’m doing. Lately the crashes or bugs are rarely appear. The only thing that I’m dreaming of is a discount for old members or even a way to pay the subscription in the site with different currencies away from USD
Failed
I loved this app so much I paid the subscription fee. Then I tried to get my data from the app. The process is horrible. No control and the only place it links to is iCloud. I’m sorry I got this app. ChatGPT recommended it. I will tell ChatGPT what a load of cr*p the app is and to never recommend it to anyone. Fix the export controls and I will change my review.
Amazing App (with a few obvious bugs/missing features)
I’ve been using this app for the past year to track everywhere I’ve walked in my city but now in the new year, it fails to load any of my previous yearly summary activity and desperately lacks the ability to see a total view of every type of previous activity in a map together (or even just the ability to see everywhere I’ve walked and bike since I’ve started using it!)
Locations are fragmented
The location sensitivity is so high that anytime I walk within a location, “work” for example, it logs multiple entries. I wish it could more easily recognize one 8 hour day at work rather than 4x2 hour days plus “transport”. For a smart app it is relatively dumb.
Was great until the subscription
I used this app for 2 years until the subscription was forced. During that time it worked mostly good. For me, the real value of this app was merely having a reliable history of my location. This app is really good at consistently logging your location and not being killed off in background like some other location trackers. Unfortunately the subscription was forced in order to get any functionality, and the entire app is locked behind a subscription page now. I can't imagine subscribing to a log of my own gps location data, so if you're a user like me who doesn't care about any of the ML and life logging features, I guess it's time to look elsewhere. I did read some confusing details that the author wrote in response to a critical review, but I still don't understand the subscription limitations. Unfortunately the app support link just goes to a marketing page that is devoid of support information. The confusion surrounding the subscription seems like it could be easily solved by putting an actual support page up.
Exceeded my expectations so far!
I have been looking for an app to replace my Google Timeline as I want to have my data protected and I’m trying to Degoogle. This app has blown me away so far. It has a lot of cool features and details for my day. I am tempted to buy the lifetime membership as I like when that is offered as option. I am on the free trial right now. Props to the developer you are awesome. From one developer to another what you are doing really makes a difference in the world so I appreciate it.
Serious lack of capability for such a basic feature
The app has potential and a clean interface, but it falls short in a few key areas that make it frustrating over time. Most notably, there’s no way to edit or fill in data gaps, nor can you correct the times of stationary stops or travel. This leaves behind inaccurate and often useless data, especially when GPS tracking glitches. Even worse, despite claiming to support iCloud Drive backup, the files never actually show up there—they remain stuck on the iPhone with no way to access through icloud.
Add ‘All time’
The app is great, reminding me when the app gets terminated so I can open it again to keep tracking. Sometimes there’s crashes from time to time, when I try to search back in history, but not that often. Speaking of history timeline, it would be great if ‘All time’ get added so I can see more than 1 year in my locations I’ve been to. There’s only daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.
Can’t be set to km
The app works in yards and there is no way to set it up to measure distance in kilometres. In addition to that, the timeline goes from bottom to top (counter-intuitive) and it is very hard to change an activity. Sometimes “walking” doesn’t even show up in the list of options and you end up having “transport” for most of the activities you did all day.
Great app with inconsistent backups
Honestly I really want to love this app, but it’s hard to trust with how it failed to load my backup from a couple years ago. The price is reasonable, and anyone who wants to use it the backup feature appears to work at least if it’s recent. Just given me trust issues
Model app. A+++. Works exactly as advertised
Open source, privacy-preserving, a clear payment structure, no micro transactions, excellent UI, always works like it says it will, straightforward settings. There's seriously nothing to dislike. A+++ app

Issues with >100 Unconfirmed Items
I’m getting in excess of 100 unconfirmed items per day while sitting at home! When I drive, the GPS data is very sporadic and Arc doesn’t know how to interpret this. This is the case for most of my days at the moment, please help!
Huge potential but…
there’s so many little annoyances that unfortunately just turn it into an unenjoyable experience, i.e: why are they giving me measurements in yards when my phone is set to metric; why every day am I having to deal with unconfirmed items; and why are things listed in reverse chronological order - I know there’s been a response to an earlier review saying this matches the rest of the internet, but come on, you don’t start telling someone about your day with where you went to sleep. Just needs some more common sense and it would get 5 stars.
Indispensable
“What did I do that day?” “Why did I spend $x on this date?” Using Arc to do historical detective work on my own life has been so valuable, especially being a privacy-focused solution. Worth the money, full stop.
Utterly destroys battery life
I’m using an iPhone 13 Pro and this app is using unreasonable amounts of battery on days that I don’t leave the house and when I’m sleeping. I have to uninstall because it makes my phone die way too fast.

Really buggy
Some days it works, most days it doesn’t. What never works is the Feedback button. As a PAYING supporter, I’d much rather give Matt and the group a heads up that Arc only functions 50% of the time, but there is no way to contact them. My advise to anyone shopping for a location tracking app is to keep looking.
So much potential
I’ve used this for years and clearly so much work has gone into it that it is really good, but due to a problem with the way in which Apple terminate apps it is switched off at random times and so half a journey may be recorded or you can suddenly find its off for a day. It was hoped iOS14 would improve things, but I find that’s not the case. If this switching off could stop, visit times + locations could be corrected and summaries were tidied up a little this app would be worth 6*
Excellent activity recovery tool
When my Apple Watch inevitably screws up and eats a workout recording, Arc App is always there to help me out. I love how Arc App constantly records my location, allowing for the easy exporting of an activity file to upload to Strava. Without Arc App, I’d have lost at least three activities in the last couple months.
Useless and now costs money!
I wasn’t mad about subscribing- I think it’s a worthwhile feature that comes in handy often enough I would pay money for it. But coincidentally, now that I have been paying for a few months (and not really using its features) it’s suddenly broken. It’s useless. It doesn’t work. I thought maybe it’s from the app being closed out, but NOPE. I made sure the app was open yesterday and even today, it says there’s an empty timeline. I live that I’ve now wasted minimum of $15 just to find out this once handy, now expensive app is now unusable. Is this a scam?!
Good
The app is mapping my locations extremely precisely and I’m glad it is. However massive data gaps occur on a normal walk, like today I left my house and it only mapped my first 5 meters away and then a massive gap happened until I went home a different way, but it mapped that route well.
Great - when it works
I love this app, when it’s working. Unfortunately it often crashes or stops recording. It tells me that this is due to my iOS settings - however my settings are all as Arc has prescribed them. This means that every so often it stops recording and if I don’t close and reopen the app, it won’t keep track. If someone from Arc Support reads this, I’d love to be in contact so I can get this resolved and give a five star review!
Ok but...
The app doesn’t track my activity unless I have the app open, it stops tracking in a daily basis and it doesn’t sync/share data with the Apple Health app. Quite frustrating.
Now requires subscription
Was surprised to see this app now requires a subscription. The monthly fee seems incredibly high considering what is being offered. Edit: after seeing the devs responses below, I can understand why the fee is present.

Good App but
This is great app but £65 a year Is a bit out of my league. I’d willingly pay something but I have too many monthly payments and £5 may seem peanuts but they all add up. Saying that, if you are one of those that can afford it it’s great and works brilliantly. Recommend you try it.
Not usable on iPhone 7
It used to be my favourite app that does one thing well and now its a slow turtle that crashes and overheats my phone.
replacement for moves but drains battery
this is so far the best moves replacement app I’ve seen. It even lets you import moves data. The one gripe I have is battery usage. I realise the battery usage can’t be zero for what it does, but the high power consumption during stationary periods, even when in airplane mode is annoying. So I have a to constantly force quit the app when arriving home/at work and remember to open it again as I leave.

Free to $140 for an app that crashes when looking at old data
As of last month I could use the app now I am hit with a pay wall. Free to $140 is too much of a jump. This app crashes when looking at old data and is very slow to look at old after the first time it crashes. Free or even $20 the app would be great. For comparison Office is $150 or 365 subscription for $6.99/month
No bike option in the transport menu
