Outstanding instructional
This app is outstanding. It takes you from knowing nothing to playing fast. I love this coarse
App isn’t up to par
I’ve been using GT for a decade at least. I’ve learned so much and the instructors are fantastic. The website is good but the app is almost not worth having. The app should be better than the website at this point. The interface is terrible. This review isn’t for GT in general, that would get 10 stars! Please make the app useful. I tried it once and never went back.
Clunky UI
I’m enjoying the lessons, but it’s always a crapshoot to resume where you left off after closing the app.
Great content terrible interface
Using these lessons on a computer presents reasonably well. The video can be viewed in parallel to the tabs. On an iPhone, however, the tablature is too small to read while the video is going. Even selecting full screen tabs retains the far too small print, forcing you to zoom in on selections and dragging manually. This is a terrible way to learn anything as 50% of your time is spend fiddling with the app instead of PLAYING YOUR GUITAR. Lessons content is fantastic.
Almost there
The app is convenient and simple to use. I am on the go all the time and primarily use my phone for lessons. So, I appreciate having it right there and in a good mobile format. That said, even though it appears almost all the website’s functionality is there, it’s just not all there yet. Progress is something that is clunky in the website. It takes a few steps to get there. It’s even harder on the app. It’s not tracked up front on the app. You have it. It’s there. It is just hard to find. In the lessons area every time you log on it looks as if you have done nothing. So if you don’t recall where you were you waist time looking around. It isn’t a minor issue. But it’s not a deal breaker. I still think it’s nice to have the app. But I do hope they work out a more graphic based or flow chart style of tracking progress. It helps motivate when you see ALL you have accomplished. And discouraging when it looks like nothing. Good luck!
Great app
Great app. Easy to navigate and clear progression of lessons. I started this app as a slightly experienced player, but never having started a formal training. The trainings start very basic, and are slow in their teaching so that it is easy to follow along. Easy to skip ahead to lessons that may be more your speed. And from what I have seen much more technical lessons that allow for deep progression of skills.
App doesn’t keep track of your progress
The guitar tricks App has several challenges but the most frustrating quirk is the App doesn’t keep track of your progress. Each time you open the App it thinks you’re starting from the beginning and that you haven’t completed any courses
Great for learning but…
App tends to freeze a lot when pausing videos and trying to resume. Also, no way to mark a lesson as completed manually and the lessons don’t start back up where you left off. Every time I reopen the app is have to figure out where I left off. The lessons in each module could be easier to find. The lessons do a good job of showing finger placement and the camera angles are helpful. Instructor is clear and concise and the learning is fun. I feel like it gives a certain level of satisfaction because there’s a clear path of learning guitar. Not just giving you exercises to do with no explanation as to why you are doing it.
Can’t access Apple TV app
As an intermediate player, the lessons I’ve sampled so far have actually been pretty good, introducing alternative approaches that could lead the way out of some well-established ruts. That’s great. What’s not so great is that even though this app is advertised to function on three platforms, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, it’s impossible to log into the Apple TV app. I created and account with the “sign in with Apple” option, bought an annual subscription, and created full login credentials. On the Apple TV app, two options for access are presented. The simplest (which works well for other apps I use) is the “restore subscription” option. This is supposed to simply recognize that my signed-in Apple ID already has a subscription purchased via my iPhone, and install the same credentials on the Apple TV app. Try this, and it does nothing. The other option is to login with your Guitar Tricks username and password. Try this, and it says the credentials are invalid. I submitted a help request to the Guitar Tricks “contact support” option in the iPhone app, and never got a response. So, two stars for some good lessons, but no more than that for one of three platforms being inaccessible, and zero response from customer help.
Great website, apps just okay
On the website you can see the whole catalog including licks (my favorite part so far). You can’t see t licks on the iPad or iPhone apps for some reason, or your practice schedule. The full access offer is supposed to come with ebooks but those are nowhere to be found. Neither are the free boot camps or customized lesson plan. That said I am getting value out of the basic lesson plan, I just wish the more “fun” parts of exploration were available through the apps.
Quitter back at it
I started guitar several years ago and the second kids hit and I could not find the time. Wanted to try again and was torn between Fender Play and Guitar Tricks. Considered personal lessons also but they are expensive. Honestly it chose Guitar Tricks on an introductory offer that was affordable over Fender Play. I have complete fundamental section and have learn more in a month that I did the entire time before. Anders is a great teacher and I dig his style. Guitar Tricks works and has kept me interested. I look forward to practicing.

It’s not loading
Great app wish there was a bit more features.
The only thing I wish was better is the ability to slow down a song as you learn it. 50% is way to slow. If there was more build up to playing a part full speed that would be awesome.

You don’t get access to all the features on the app like you do on the desktop.

It’s an awesome app and free but if you want to learn songs and if your a beginner you only get a couple of basic lessons but overall it’s an awesome app if you want to catch up on guitar or if you want to start guitar for example I just started today and learned 2 chords and 2 Melodie’s
Full access
After having full access for years, they have bumped the price up and now I don’t have full access. It seems to me like they can increase the cost of full access at any time and deny those who have already paid for full access, access.
Needs more songs
Needs more songs. specifically Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Apple TV not working.
I’ve tried every method on the Internet for logging in to the Apple TV, but it still says I have the wrong credentials. The fix I read from GuitarTricks is to use AirPlay, which is not a fix, just a workaround, so their app is useless on Apple TV.
Best of the bunch but not perfect by any means
I’ve tried Yousician (too game-ified and annoying scrolling), Justin (lovely guy but not enough content) and Uberchord (buggy). GT is a more serious and properly musical approach. Can’t believe, though, that there are no finger placements (especially if you’re doing the classical option or compositions). The range of songs is also definitely skewed towards electric.
Video lessons could have higher speed
Just started. I already play the guitar, self taught. Im a completionist person and like to see all lessons without skipping, but the app dont have the option to speed up to 1.5 or 2x so I can quickly scroll through the lesson and watch pieces that I would be more interested in. Would be a cool feature just like slowing down that is already existing in the app to see in details something being explained. Editing my review to 5 stars. This is an awesome tool for every level. Loving it.

Almost Perfect
I love everything about this except one thing, the Apple TV app. I love that this is available on Apple TV and the app is of high quality with easy navigation. However in the beginner lessons you can’t pick the New Course options, it defaults to Old Course. Fix that and it’s five stars. The instruction is outstanding at a fraction of the price of private lessons.
Not enough music showing on lesson with iPad or Mac app. Jumps etc…
Looking for tool that is easier to see music while teacher runs through material. Disappointed in app. Decent selection and maybe if I had huge monitor showing full lesson it would not be any issue

YouTube much better than this
Seriously? The beginning lesson says just use the c over g with a bar chord and it’s easy. There is no way anyone intermediate or lower can follow this and there is no help or explanation.
Good but Flawed
Content is excellent. The Blues lessons are great. Navigation is a total pain and the App just closes randomly on occasion.
User friendly
Not that user friendly and was a little disappointed that a lot of the artists or even songs that I like are not listed !

I’m an intermediate player lesson are either to simple and boring or to fast with little explanation the tab graphics on screen are helpful but not used in advanced lessons for some reason extended jam tracks would be great paid for a year and will use it but probably won’t renew
Great app! Amazing lessons!
I have reached through all the internet for a good app that can teach me guitar. I was a complete beginner!! But when I start things I like to do them well (especially if I’ll pay for it). I did a deep research on the apps that teach guitar, like Yousician and Simple Guitar, and believe me, this is the best one that you can invest on! I’ve been using this app for a couple of months, and even though I haven’t been as persistent, I can definitely see so much improvement! Imagine if you go serious about it with this app! They go slow pace, they really take in count that you are a beginner. They have different levels (if you are more advanced). They have a ton of classes of every type of guitar that you may have. Also they have full tutorials on songs and other cool tricks. If you want to get serious with the guitar and learn every detail (and not just know how to play it) this is the app for you. And if you also are looking to just know how to play songs, this is the app for you. I truly recommended! Amazing professors! And the price is accesible. Right now I’m paying 10$ / month
Weak App
It’s difficult to navigate, not everything is available on the app that’s available on the website. I have to close the app to see the homepage with the new videos and previously seen videos. It’s disappointing that removed hundreds of song tutorials.
Great Tool to learn guitar
I love the structure and everything about the learning process with Guitar Tricks but the only reason I don’t give this a five star rating is because I’ve had this app over a year and a half and they still haven’t fixed the bugs. Not all the time but often I’ll click on a lesson and it will bring up a different lesson than I clicked on or a lesson not even in the category I’m in. For example in the beginners tab in the practice tip section I’ll click on the left handed playing lesson and it will pop up a lesson from the Funk genre. If the developers see this please fix this. You will gain a five star rating if you do because right now the computer version is more reliable than the mobile app.

The app doesnt show any tools
Solid, not great
The app has an issue on the phone (iPhone 15 Pro Max) where if you touch the screen in fullscreen horizontal mode (widescreen), the app will return to vertical mode. I don't think this is the intended design, so maybe it’s a bug. Perhaps it is meant to be a swipe so you can quickly exit full screen, but it’s too sensitive if so. This is frustrating when trying to rewind because you must return to widescreen mode. Another issue is when doing a chord switch when trying to play along the chord switch is sometimes not notated until the new line of notation comes up, so it’s easy to mess up because you don't see it coming. You either need to memorize the chords/notes or bring the notation up, which is too small to read on a phone with the video also playing. You could also print off the notation, but this is a hassle for shorter videos. I have used primarily blues and classical lessons. The blues lessons are very well done, and the teacher makes me believe he knows what he is doing. The classical teacher is fine, but his play is either sloppy, the guitar is out of tune, or the recording quality isn't good. I can't figure out which it is. However, he teaches the notes and techniques well overall.
Love the app, but I have a few recommendations
I am loving this, but can you add more modern pop artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift. That along with those as artists courses would add so much to the app for me at least.

Can barely rewind which makes it take forever and also service just horrible for this app never loads anything
Great courses - song library underwhelming
Anders’ fundamentals course has been the one I have stuck to the easiest, I am excited and look forward to his lessons. It has been easy to stick to. I Have tried other self guided apps / tutorials but Ander’s curriculum and method has been the best I’ve experienced. The only downside of the app is their song library. While it does offer some great selections of songs it feels like the songs that I would be excited to learn are few and far between. If your looking for a great fundamentals course (or a course on a particular style like blues) I’d definitely recommend the app!
Bad at explaining
I literally watched the video 7 times and still cant understand, very bad at explaining and the only reason im using it is because i don't want to learn with a teacher otherwise don't recommend
Good content, horrible UI
It is super inconvenient, everything organized chaotically, looks like developers have no money for UI/UX designers.
Absolutely the best for beginners.
I learned guitar from scratch on this app. The lessons are great and I advanced quickly. As I progressed I wanted to learn more songs. That is when I turned to other options. It’s not that the lessons aren’t great but I’m one guy with an acoustic. I don’t need to know three plugged in guitar parts. If I were in a band that would be great however. My only suggestion is to gear more of your song lessons to people like myself.

I’m a beginner but, so far, the content looks really great. If I have one thing to point out is that the “play along” functionality could use some love. On my phone I can’t slow the video down and, on my tablet, I can but then the tabs won’t scroll. Also the sound degrades a lot.

Pros: Good format, with several options (visuals, tablature, etc). Teachers are clear. Good for beginners and low intermediate players. Cons: Limited inventory of songs. Mostly geared to electric. I play acoustic. Levels were too low for me. Frustrating signing up, frustrating help section. Example: I couldn’t figure how to operate the looping feature, help section didn’t address it, and my email to support on the subject went unanswered.
UI needs an update
The site contains a lot of stuff, but it is difficult to get around. There is no auto play for the videos and no indication to move forward after the video is done. And when I open the app, it shows the last video viewed, but shows nothing about the course progress. The UI needs an update!!

Easy fun affordable. ESPECIALLY when you are a beginner and Kent meet with your music teacher every week keeps you and your fingers moving and you’re learning. Easier to understand when you do meet your teacher.

Good content, bad app
This app still crashes if you have a lesson video maximized, go to another app, then return. Like, for instance, if you check a message. Its a pity because the lessons are quite good but the app is rubbish.
Cluttered
I still feel that the App is too cluttered and difficult to follow. Also I feel that the guitarists doing the lessons need to slow down. They appear to rush things which is not good for someone who is learning the guitar
