Excellent learning app, well worth the price
I’ve been using the app for the past few months, I saw an ad for it on Instagram. I love the functionality of getting to have a new word appear on your lock screen every hour. It helps remind me to keep studying and thinking about using Japanese. The flash cards are an amazing tool to learn new vocab along with Kanji. And each word has example sentences, and within those examples sentences you can click on other words you see and add those useful ones to your flash card decks. I’ve been over to memorize and can now recognize over 100 basic kanji using this app. While you do have to pay, I think the price is really quite reasonable for all the useful functionally you get and no annoying ads like Duolingo. For beginners, this is a great little app to hop into and study on the go. It obviously won’t teach you everything (no single resource can), but it is a great way to learn new and actually useful vocab and see it in context. It’s also very useful because for each Kanji it shows the meaning/logic behind the radicals that make it up, and it teaches you the stroke order for writing it. Overall, an excellent app for building your foundations of Japanese if you’re self-guided.
Require u to pay to use
Forces u to pay or subscribe annoying
Love it but Kanji is complex!!
I love the app and its method of teaching, writing kanji and kana is very helpful and even the roots of the words is amazing but wow it’s a lot. When I saw the app I just wanted to practice speaking for communication. Reading and Writing is a whole other ball game!! I wish we could have a “speaking only” mode that shows the english spelling of the words, pronunciation and the Japanese word. I find that even if you wanted to use the kanji and kana modes it’s difficult to grasp because the app goes right into words instead of learning how to read/write the basic syllables/symbols
Good idea but not ready for prime time
Really loved the idea of this app and think it has a lot of potential, but had to cancel it because of the constant breaking bugs. Updates are pushed out regularly with minimal testing that completely break the core functionality required to use the app. The developer does fix them quickly when they’re reported, but I’m tired of being the QA team for an app I paid for.
Lots of bugs but cool concept
Lots of bugs with the hourly words especially with the way it’s tracked. For complete beginners it should give them the option to start with daily Hiragana like the vowels then then 8 rows instead of entire words.
Best Japanese App
I love this app. I found that when I was learning with Anki, if I opened the app it worked well- but then I would go weeks without opening the app, and getting zero benefit. With this app, I get a notification with my new word every 30 mins, and when I see the new word (especially when it’s a word I already know) I always open the app to click “Got it” so it’ll be added to my list of known words. From there once I have opened the app, I have the momentum to quickly learn 5 or so words before closing it again. I’ve learned 200 words in less than 2 weeks, and based on my word reviews usually being flawless, I am actually retaining the words better than expected. Totally worth the cost!
Completely paid
Not much else to say. Saw an add that I could add it to my lock screen but the whole app is paywalled. Don’t waste your time.
good app, but need a lot of improvement
i like the concept of the widget, so it's easy to review without the needs to open the app. also the practice feature is great. but I hope that we can select the source from our custom deck/save for both the practice and widgets, so it's not only available for N1-N5 vocabs. also when doing a practice, the app seems laggy whenever we flip the card and the words collection miss some essential vocab!
Buggy and overly optimistic
I like what they’re trying to do with the app but it seems to not know what it is, e.g. adding lessons etc just makes it overly complicated. But the main reason I deleted it is that it tells me “you have learned a word!” the first time I read it. They clearly have no idea what it is like trying to learn a language if you have poor memory and I will have to encounter a word many many times before it is “learned”. Also it has frozen a few times. Not worth my time…
Hangs when entering settings
I subscribed because i liked the interval and flash card features but since the latest update i cannot enter into settings to adjust my quite time. It just hangs and freezes
Very useful!
I love how practical and efficient the design and learning structure are. Great for beginners. Recommend!
Charged Without Using the App - Refund Denied
I purchased this application to give it a try, but I was charged even though I ultimately did not use the app. I requested a refund, but no refund was issued. I’m disappointed with the experience, especially since I was charged for a service I didn’t use. I would appreciate a more transparent and customer-friendly refund process for situations like this.
Very Immersive
I’ve been studying for a while and always struggled broadening my vocabulary. I think I’ve found my cure
Not free
App appears as free and then forces you to subscribe. Unfortunate.
I like the UI and the structure.
I realized that hourly is very distracting because I have to stop in the middle of work to look at the screen. I wish there is an option to learn a day’s worth in one go? If it is, I wasn’t really clear. I just kept going, but it still reminds me and gave me new words hourly. I like that I can keep reviewing to make sure that I got those words down. It’s organized very well.
best language app format
implements spaced repetition with a focus on regular repetition. good, relevant examples. only complaint is i cant get rid of the animal on the widget. its a bit distracting for me
Seems broken. Do not pay for this.
The app appears to be broken. In certain cases, I am unable to select or enter answers, preventing me from being to proceed through lessons.
Mostly good but super annoying in some ways
First, let me remove cards forever. I'm prompted for like hiragana aa, ah! Oh! Like 20 times a day and no matter how often I've answered it I can't make the word disappear forever. I assume because I skipped jlpt level 5, and it was part of the tutorial, that's why it comes up so frequently. Otherwise pretty good app. Reminders vs new vocabulary are a bit confusing and out of sync, some words have the wrong pronunciation, but the kanji meanings, radical break downs, and process towards memorisation are all great. Edit: could be because it never tests me on the ah oh word like it's a bug. It just says congratulations instead.
Pronunciation Way Off
As the title suggests, the pronunciation for the words you learn is completely wrong in the sample sentences. Definitely makes learning difficult when the context is always incorrect. Also a bummer that there’s no free option for this. Interface is clean though
Great idea with some issues
The widget is great as it’s an easy way to absorb new vocabulary, and replaces picking up the phone to aimlessly scroll social media. The lessons are also well constructed. But I encounter a big glitch with the typing exercises. Whether I type the answers perfectly in romaji or hiragana, the answers are not accepted. So it’s impossible to progress.
Helpful
I’m working to get myself up to par for the JLPT N1 exam. This has been a good tool to supplement my learning thus far.
Not actually free
The free version is unusable, you are required to pay for a subscription. I’m tired of apps using this model. Subscriptions for everything is exhausting (and I’m unemployed currently so I can’t even do that). If you want to be paid for your services, just make the app paid allowing a one time payment. Otherwise screw this app.
Recent update broke reviews
Love this app, but the most recent update broke reviews. As soon as I click “Submit” to submit my answer the app freezes and locks up, and I need to close it. It happens 100% of the time! Please fix it and I’ll go back to 5 stars
Was interested until I downloaded it.
I wound up deleting it almost immediately after the first lesson because they told me the app is pay to use and it only operates as a free trial for a couple days which I really wish they advertised in advance before wasting my time downloading and using this app. So even though it seemed really useful and looked great, there are lots of other apps out there that are completely free of not only ads but of fees as well, or ones that charge you for advanced lessons and features. It was hilarious deleting it because they have a promo code that displays when you go to delete to try to get you to pay for their subscription service. If the model was access for life and a flat fee or paying for advanced lessons that would make sense, but my advice to anyone reading this is save yourself the time and energy and download something that’s honest about their product.
Subscription
It looks like it’s probably pretty good for learning Japanese however it’s completely locked without a subscription which sucks
Genuinely amazed
The structure of learning is perfect, I helps you subconsciously and passively expose yourself to words over the course of the day. This in addition to the active learning modules you can go through I have been learning a ton. The thing that blows my mind the most is the developer is extremely quick at bug fixes and responds with updates if you report a problem. Overall blew my expectations out of the water
Full app is behind a paywall
There is no free version that lets you continue with ads or anything, but it forces you to pay before you start the program
Vocabulary builder
Really nice app which helps learn new words together with kanji. You don’t need to know all the readings of a kanji, but a particular word sticks to your mind. That what I was looking for! Widgets are nice. Writing kanji is a bit messy for now. Your hand is completely free, but sometimes you need to start your line in an exact point of a screen in order to finish writing. The Japanese voice is incredible! It’s much better than default system voice (like in every other app). The app also provides basic information about grammar structures. In sentences you can see what grammar is used which can be handy. Unfortunately, it feels ‘raw’ (f.e. prepositions which can be used as a marker of time or direction in a sentence with time are showed only as direction marker) It would be nice to see more example sentences (not two, but maybe three-four?) Words are sorted not only by JLPT levels, but slang words are also provided. Price is a bit high suggesting only yearly and monthly subscription. Overall, this app has a big potential and developers are actively polishing it, which is awesome!
Incorrect Pronunciation & Doesn’t save settings.
The app seems great in theory but the incorrect pronunciations I’ve encountered, specifically on the example sentences like the card for すぐに, is a dealbreaker since it’s a subscription app. Also settings don’t change which makes it quite annoying when changing your N level, have to change settings upon every refresh.
Skip Ahead button non-functional after update
Good app, but this needs fixing before I give it 5 stars
Fun and easy learning
This is such an all around great learning app that keeps you reminded to take learning bites throughout the day! Also thanks for speedy updates to keep great functionality flowing and learning tools at the ready!
Immediate paywall
Needs a lite version
Wonderful
The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because I don't think that the different types of learners or segments of learners were well considered. For instance I've been speaking Japanese for well over a decade and I love the idea of being able to learn new words. The app is crowded a little bit with some of the beginner stuff, which isn't helpful to me personally. I think all of the functionality is here. It just needs to be either onboarded a little better or through the UX, connected to the experience. For instance I like the idea of creating some decks and having that go into rotation of words I learn using The hourly concept. Also I want it to be really easy to disqualify or hide words that I know very well. I would hope that through the daily practice the spaced repetition memorization concept also influences what words are shown on my screen, for instance, and prompted at me. Perhaps I would like to see a mix of 80% new words but mix in 20% review. Also I forgot to mention I think that having grammar as a separate widget or being complementary to the hour notification. For context I lived in Japan for three years in my 20s. That was about 14 years ago and I am living in the States now. I consume some Japanese media but it's not a central part of my life so I passively and casually maintain and increase my vocabulary. I think this is a great app for people who who want to maintain their Japanese long-term. Finally on the pricing I would be comfortable. Actually I would prefer buying a lifetime access to the app. It would be neat if there was a Discord or something else for users.
Changing my review they scammed me
This app was great, I can tell they were taking in the feedback and fixing things until this recent update. I have no clue what happened but it will not let me use it. I keep trying to restore my subscription with nothing happening and I see no easy way to get support past to pay for another subscription, which is now more expensive! I’ve even uninstalled the app to see if that was a problem, nothing changed it just gives an error.
Great Idea, Some Issues
I love the app. The lock scree. Widget is awesome, and its actually a pretty solid information layout. The main issue is the sentence pronunciations. I’m not going to say don’t use AI as thats unrealistic for the amount of sentences there are, but the AI voice is not even saying anything remotely close to what the sentence says, nor is it saying anything that could pass as Japanese. It is very prone to hallucinations. I understand its in the beginning stage, but you guys have a big responsibility to tell these new learners that the voice is AI and will most likely mess up. I would also like to see an option to not have the stroke order for the kanji show up as soon as you click the “trace” button.
such a great learning resource!!
i’ve been having such an amazing time with this app!! the widget has been a fun resource on my lockscreen and other than that, the entire app has been great and hopefully the price point will continue to stay low enough to continue wanting to use this as a fun recreational learning reference :)
Deleted my progress after subscription processed
Hi, i was really enjoying the app so i purchased the year subscription, but today I logged on to see that my progress has just been erased. There is no “support” to report this issue to, and i honestly want to keep using this but im discouraged because again, the app just completely forgot me! Please let me know if i can get my money back, or if this can be fixed.
Sentence pronunciation is too fast
I like how the app is laid out and you can click through words and kana, but when you hear the word used in a sentence, the speaker is WAY too fast. I can barely follow along with what is a word, what is a particle or otherwise.
It seems cute, but
I really want to get into this app and actually use it, but when I get to the screen where it’s telling me how many words I’m going to learn in a year, the text is too big for the screen or something and it won’t let me scroll, so I can’t proceed. I’ve tried fixing my personal settings and nothing works. I’ve even tried uninstalling and reinstalling it with the update and everything.
Good app for learning hiragana and katakana
Like that there is an hourly word, it makes it fun to learn. The hiragana and katakana learning sections are great. But I noticed the pronunciation when you click to hear it for the grammar section was completely wrong. They are not pronouncing the words correctly making it confusing to learn.
Seriously great app
This is hands-down the very best app I’ve used to support my Japanese learning. The ability to learn a bite-sized piece of vocab, along with the written form AND with additional example sentences that add more practice, vocab, grammar and context, continually throughout the day, at your own pace and convenience, even in the middle of work, is just brilliant. I’d describe it as micro-immersion learning that hits on all fronts. My tutor is blown away at the increase in my vocabulary and my ability to read kanji and hiragana, and frankly, I’m blown away myself. Highly recommend subscribing to this, it is worth every penny.
So many errors
How can you expect someone to learn if almost every sentence has errors? Clicking to listen doesn’t even give you the word , and half the time they mispronounce things. Caught this in the first 5 minutes …
I like it, but…
Is there some way to view all the radicals in the kanji while practicing stroke order? It only shows one with each example. Also, it would help if meanings of individual characters were listed with words including more than one character.
pronunciation incorrect
first word I was given was “pya.” the definition of the word was “contracted kana read as pya” which doesn’t provide any meaning. when I pressed play on the audio of the word, it went between saying “da” or “na”. same as the other review!! now I now this isn’t just an isolated incident. the next word I got was “shinamono” which it pronounced as “shinamozu”. disappointing because the idea of the app seems nice but it’s useless if this is the information being given
Not free
App looks good but you can’t use it for free. There are other vocabulary apps that are available for free that I will be using instead
super underrated!
really useful app! i love the anki import support. i got it initially just for the widget, but there was surprisingly so much more
Audio pronunciation is very off.
I got this to learn more kanji. I can speak Japanese pretty fluently but never learned how to read or write kanji growing up. I would be pretty upset if I was learning from scratch and chose to pay for an app that pronounced a lot of the words and sentences wrong. Concept is great but needs a lot of tweaks.
The Devs Actually Listen
I reported a small issue and the developers fixed it way faster than I expected. They’re constantly improving the app, and you can tell they genuinely care about the experience
Could be great
I enjoyed seeing kanji on my lock-screen. I tapped on it often during the free trial. Sadly, it completely stops working when that’s over and they aggressively push a subscription. If the app let me keep using the lock-screen widget, I’d probably have eventually paid, but now it’s worthless and I deleted it.
