What people like
- Great explanations and clear example sentences
- Perfect companion for your textbook studies
- Makes learning grammar structured and fun
- Clean audio helps improve listening skills
What they complain about
- App crashes often and loses progress
- Notifications fail to remind you of reviews
- Starts at wrong level with no easy reset
- You get spammed with emails after signing up
Invaluable
Has been invaluable as a study aid while working through Genki 1 and 2. Seeing the grammar points and vocabulary in the context of stances outside of Genki is a huge help. And the audio feature to hear the sentences helps me to work on my listening ability.

Grammar section very helpful.
Need German translation
Hey Guys, do you plan to bring German as a language in game ? So I will learn in mother’s language but is no possible with this app 😭 but Looks really good to me 😉
Fine, I suppose
I’m not sure if I don’t understand the example sentences because I skipped straight to N4 (and didn’t see the earlier grammar or vocabulary) or if they are just using grammar and vocabulary that are way beyond N4. I suspect it’s the latter, which is really not helpful. I also wish there were a way to hide the hints in quizzes: I tend to be lazy and not read the entire sentence yet still be able to answer just by reading the English hint.
Useful app
Excellent app - it has helped me a lot at N5-N4 levels. Only slight issue is that their JLPT test exams seemed a fair bit easier than the actual exam.
Needs work
I’ve learned up to N2 grammar and have been using Bunpro for a while—mainly the beta version because it was convenient on mobile. Now that the official app is out, it honestly feels like a rebranded beta. Still buggy, and not much improved. Main issues: • Input system is too strict. Compared to WaniKani (the kanji learning app), Bunpro gives zero leeway. A typo like “hellp” for “hello” gets marked wrong. Even harmless synonyms like “crying” vs. “weeping” get flagged. It’s frustrating and wastes time. • Clunky UI. The design feels choppy and inefficient. Something as simple as adding your own synonyms takes way too many clicks. It shouldn’t be this tedious. • Missing customization features. I’d love to add custom images for mnemonics. Visual aids help memory, and this is a missed opportunity. • Automatic Kana keyboard switching should be standard. Having to manually switch for Japanese inputs adds friction. That said, there are good things: • It makes grammar more accessible and structured. • The example sentences are practical and reinforce points well. • No need to carry around thick textbooks anymore. In short: it’s functional, but rough around the edges. Needs smarter input handling, more flexible synonym recognition, and better UX polish to justify being “official.”
Dommage.
love this app, got a great use to prepare for JLPT tests
one thing I’d like to ask the developers, please test pencil usages on iPad. there are a few things that need to be improved while using the app on iPad with pencils
Full of bugs
Very buggy I wish it worked it seems very helpful and easy to use . Crashes after every lesson and review, doesn’t save progress well.
Great App
Would give five stars if the notifications worked at all, but no matter what I do they absolutely refuse to let me know when reviews are due.
Frustrating first impressions...
Seems like a very robust app, but for some reason it started me at N4, and i can see no way to reset this on the app or on the web. I just want to choose where to start, shouldnt be this hard. The app even says at the beginning "dont stress about the initial options you can change them later" but it's not clear to me how to do that. i would prefer to have a clearly visualized linear course progression. Just because I'm at a certain level doesnt mean i want to start from there. In my mind any course app should allow you to start from the beginning or continue at any time from the home screen, just like a video game.
Game Changer
Honestly a game changer when learning grammar. I only use it for grammar and not even the vocab. It’s just that good at grammar. If you want to pick up grammar fast and in a structured and enjoyable manner then this is just the best thing out there hands down.
Great start to an iOS native app for BunPro
I’m looking forward to more feature parity with the web app, like being able to alternate the voice samples between male and female.
Better than doomscrolling!
Bunpro is amazing! While I used to reach for my phone to endlessly doomscroll, I’ve since replaced that habit with Bunpro. Its system of spaced repetition gives me a wonderful thing to reach for when I’m waiting in line for coffee or winding down at the end of the day. Its system of pluggable flash cards has made it an invaluable companion to my Genki textbook. Whereas I used to get tripped up on its grammar lessons, or have trouble making its vocab “stick”, Bunpro gives me a great way to practice those lessons. Now I’m finding that I’m making much more progress in my studies and I’m enjoying every minute of it!
Amazing
If you’re learning Japanese its amazing cheap and also links in your WaniKani studies as well they have my support forever
Info button is way worse
The info button producing a screen that scrolls down made my review process way more time consuming. I don’t like the way it works. It makes my keyboard display disappear, I can’t click into the text box to delete text, and I’m forced to undo. On top of that I’ve accidentally hit the back button on the info screen, thinking it will bring me back up the page, but it brings me back to my homepage. Overall, made the app worse.
Great Detail!
Favorite Japanese learning app & website: great cross compatibility and I love the nuance in definitions, explanations, and tons of examples. The audio is super clean and everything flows really well.
Very polished, super helpful
Bunpro has great explanations of grammar points and excellent example sentences. It’s indispensable for serious learners of Japanese.
really good!
this is a really good app for learning japanese! it challenged me, and has really improved my language skills. however, one problem i had was i was able to learn for free for a few weeks, but suddenly i couldn’t anymore without paying. i was really sad to see that, since i have been working hard. it may be my fault though for not researching that you had to pay for it! i see why you do, it’s a really good app! it was just a bit of a surprise.
