Best AI usage in apps
That’s the first time I see an app using AI to efficiently help HUMANS to learn something. Great implementation !
Be careful
Canceled and I’m still being charged, and it doesn’t show up under the Apple subs.
Very good & pretty useful.
But it has a few flaws that are really annoying. Therefore 4/5. Still the best App out there.
Not the best
- The app movie subtitles only work if you use a browser, in a pc, and after downloading a extension. - is not very intuitive, using it is quite frustrating in the beginning, not fun, not easy to use. I think it promises more than the delivery
Avoid the Reader at all costs.
It’s a good app and platform for video content but they rush features and updates without fixing fundamental flaws. The parser is completely scuffed. Migaku suggests readings on Japanese words which are just completely wrong, kanji have multiple readings and the app teaches incorrect readings all the time. It’s fine on video content because you can hear when the parser is wrong and you can choose the right one, but for reading content it’s actively teaching you incorrect Japanese which you mine and solidify into memory. Forcing people to have to relearn incorrect words. It’s pretty unacceptable. Avoid the Reader at all costs, it teaches incorrect Japanese and it will poison your learning. Stick to video content only.

Next level learning app
Seriously?
You want >$700 for this? Bfr
Amazing but crashes
Too many crashes even after installing and reinstalling. But otherwise good before all this happened
Unable to use
Just signed up to use the app, verified my email and then the app immediately said the trial period was over? I’m assuming this is a weird error, but pity as this makes the app unusable and I never got to try out the features. Will be uninstalling.
Anki Export Missing
It’s incredibly tedious to run an external script to export to Anki at the end of every day. Anki is also so much better cause it integrates with other tools but MOST importantly has FSRS. It’s just better than Migaku memory. Second, for the price of this product, I would really be expecting all-in-one meaning having an OCR / Manga Reader too. And other QoL would be using Jimaku api key and automatically loading subtitles.
Incredible for Japanese, Best Language Learning Platform I’ve Tried
This is legit one of the best language learning platforms you could use. Seriously, their academy course combined with their superior SRS flashcard system (better than Anki imo), is so effective and makes studying something I genuinely look forward to. Kanji is actually fun now, when I used to be afraid of it. Learning the foundation of the language is so well explained and I always feel I have a perfect amount of studying each day to feel progression yet not be overloaded. Seriously, try this out. Best experience i’ve had language learning yet.
No trail or view the app
I Downloaded an unknown Japanese app from an unknown developer and is asking for my email and money!! I just wanted to see what it was about before anything bc some yt recommended. I won’t be be back 🗑️🚮
Does what it says
Picked this up on sale, indispensable if you need to data mine vocabulary from media content. Has a great “share button”for getting any text from external<sources into its clipboard /scratchpad. You’d think $100 a year is “too much” — but if you’re serious it’s not. Try the free demo first, if you “overuse” Migaku you’ll know
Useless if you want to speak a new language
This app only does reading and listening training based on spaced repetitions.
Almost There
I downloaded it and it seems like a really neat concept. However, the app is still heavily underdeveloped and commands a way too high lifetime tier to even be worth it. I suggest lowering the lifetime, actually getting some languages, and not forcing immediate signup to view the content.
Migaku helps with consistency
I love Migaku since I can consistently do lessons everyday at my own pace. Sometimes I can do a 15 minute lesson, other times I can stretch it to 45 minutes.
No free trial
You can’t test it out… they hit you with a paywall for super high prices without an option to try it first…
Cute and simple, lacks deeper learning customization
I learned around 400 japanese words in 30 days (most of them in kanji form) - it’s great for getting vocab. I would like to be able to customize my learning routines: it would be awesome if at first the completely unknown words would be shown as kana only (with their kanji in the sentence underneath) and only after you’ve got an intuition for the new words, they get replaced by kanji. Another huge downside is that Migaku is subscription based.
Currently unusable (15 pro)
The menu after pressing known words doesn’t scroll properly, it jumps from the very top to the very bottom so that some items are inaccessible. When using the YouTube function, it crashes every time around the second subtitle. There should also be an option to export Migaku memory decks. There is absolutely no way I am going to spend months or years making cards on your proprietary SRS when they can be held hostage / rendered useless with a price hike
I with it had more dictionary functions.
I wish it had both English-to-Japanese and Japanese-to-English dictionary functions. I’m studying English, and it would be great if I could look up English words that correspond to Japanese words and add them directly to my vocabulary list.
A company not blinded by greed
I've been using Migaku for 6 months and there is a clear and drastic improvement in my language ability. I talk to Japanese people every day and they notice the difference too. This is what happens when a company makes something that is actually designed to work effectively. If you use Duolingo, please, get rid of it as it is designed to sink you into an endless cycle of making you think you are progressing. It's a strategy to make money and not actually help you. Migaku is a heck of a commitment because if you miss days, you will have to re-review a lot of material. This is because of how the flash card system works. Showing you content right before you forget it. And yes, it actually works but you have to commit to it and it can take several hours a day to complete. But if you aren't studying that long, you won't learn. Anyway, I've said what I wanted to say. This app is the real deal. Seriously.
You’re gonna have to fork over the money…
Yeah, no, I don’t know what I was expecting. With the advertising I saw online I thought this would’ve been at least somewhat free, but no the app shoves it’s subscription service in your face and your only other option is to be set back to the sign in page like a filthy cheap scrub. Obviously this app is an amazing resource and I hope the developers continue to prosper in their pursuit of making learning better! However, with all the other apps that teach your target language with similar pricing, I sadly can’t recommend it if you’re already drowning in services (ie: bunpro, Duolingo, and whatever else is on the market.) But if you’re not me go right ahead the UI is amazing and it looks engaging!
Good app for intermediate
Someone recommended this app and I installed it for a trial. I think I would enjoy it more if I had more months before getting it. I barely learn hiragana and this app starts with lots of kanji. I will get it next year when I am ready.
Unethically expensive for a work-in-progress (imo)
Has potential with some unique features, but missing some basic functionality and overall annoying and questionably trustworthy. There are free apps that do most of what this app does, let alone less expensive options. Moreover, the fact that it doesn’t even let you login (ie, and see any of your learning history) after your free trial ends is, in my opinion, unacceptable, and what ultimately prompted me to even write this review. I’ve never seen a respectable app of this sort do this before, let alone an app that isn’t even fully built yet. I was still considering rating the app highly and even potentially paying for it, but when they blocked me from accessing literally any content after the free trial, that had me loose any desire for me to consider using this software in the future.
Si blocca
L’interfaccia è molto carina e ha tutte le funzioni del sito, però mentre studi le flashcards tende spesso a bloccarsi, soprattutto se la connessione non è perfettamente stabile. Si sblocca solo se riavvio l’app.
Great app
Super helpful for my language learning. About to finish the main course for Japanese after using the app for 6 months. Loving it so far and seeing real progress in my recognition and recall.
Decent concept but terribly buggy, incomplete, and also AI-reliant
There’s AI stuck in all parts of this, and even though they have settings to opt out (clicked about 6 settings to turn off the AI and was stuck with 2 ways it could not be removed), there was still more ways the AI was popping up without approval. I clicked on a word that was highlighted (just to mark it as known!) and it was like “here’s a ChatGPT summary”. Don’t want that! Let a dictionary pop up, not a paragraph of customerservice nonsense, made by a 50% inaccurate nonsense machine. The browser extension in Chrome was buggy and slow, and kept crashing. The iOS app doesn’t even want to review flashcards after you’ve reviewed them for the day. (What if I want to see them again?) The website you log into doesn’t have info - it’s a landing page and not much else. No dashboard of stats, nor card review access. There’s no vocab course for the language they support. There’s not an easy way to make it that you know a word (had to search that and read it off a discussion board). It was easier to summon AI ChatGPT without intent than it was to mark a word as known. Also, the advertisements around the app (like customer reviews you find) feel scammy because they often describe things that can’t be done in the app - just to piggyback off of other programs’ advertising in forums. Also, it couldn’t even recognize words in language or not in language - so YouTube was highlighted with every English word possible, but French words with apostrophes were treated as separate words (J’ai is ai and aujourd’hui is aujord). Finally, it removed me from learning because it wouldn’t work on the apps (it was fighting with YouTube). I’m better off writing the words and definitions I find in context and then studying the new-words-of-the-day. The Migaku cards put a lot of bells and whistles onto a card but they’re messy and inaccurate and take more time than just continuing to study. Pay money to create a hassle and create problems.
Efficace pour Apprendre l’Anglais
Enfin une application où l’on peut regarder ses séries Netflix (via chrome donc sur ordi seulement) et progresser en Anglais. Avec l’iPhone et l’iPad on peut regarder les vidéos sous YouTube et là aussi progresser rapidement. Je mets 4 étoiles au lieu de 5 car l’interface mériterait d’être encore améliorée en terme d’ergonomie, mais ça reste un outil super efficace.

Best app for language learning
I’ve used many apps to learn Japanese. This by far has been the most useful app/tool I’ve used. Great for serious learners and beginners alike.
Effectively no review
The app demands that you subscribe even to try it, and says my review period has expired even though I’ve never used it. So… you want me to pay $130 for it without even seeing it? I think not. If your app doesn’t suck, let me use it for a decent period without subscribing at all.
重宝してます
iphone15proを使ってます。os,アプリは最新版使ってます。 自分の興味のあるドラマやアニメなどからフラッシュカードを作るのに重宝してます
It's the best available, but not good yet.
I have a lifetime subscription and use this everyday to mine sentences and make cards for Japanese. It works perfectly for this purpose. However, the iOS app experience is absolutely terrible. It freezes routinely, parsing is spotty and the interface is unintuitive. Know that the main product of Migaku is the browser extension. I hope the iOS app gets more love but for now it's just "functional".
Best app for Japanese for sure!
All in the title! Just need academy level 2 🙏
Crashes
The kanji course crashed for me over a dozen times every day. It is an egregiously poor piece of software.
App Not Launching on iPhone 12
7/29 the app launched. Thanks. 1. After updating to version 1.9.8, the app no longer launches on my iPhone 12. Even when it does open, it crashes within a second. Please fix this issue as soon as possible. 2. In the previous version, whenever I tried to register a word from a YouTube video, I would consistently receive an error saying the app couldn’t take a screenshot of the video, and the registration would fail. When the error didn’t appear, the app would get stuck in a loading state and never proceed to the word registration screen. Eventually, it would freeze, and I had to force quit the app manually. In short, registering words from YouTube videos was completely impossible. This makes my lifetime membership feel meaningless. Please address this issue urgently. 3. Since the previous version, even a few seconds of app usage causes my iPhone to overheat significantly. Now, with version 1.9.8, although the app doesn't even launch properly, just a few failed launch attempts cause abnormal heating. This also needs to be fixed immediately.
Why is this not the top language learning app again?
I’ve been wanting to learn Japanese for a few months and watched tons of videos on how to get started but still had a hard time knowing quite what to do…but then I found Migaku. This combined pretty much everything I’d read and watched online about how to learn Japanese into one app. Everything is taught through flashcards in a spaced repetition system. It starts by teaching Kana, then around 200 Kanji/kanji components. After that it begins teaching words using those kanji, which are always and tied into a new grammar topics and put in context with a sentence. Kana and Kanji flashcards come with mnemonics, and you can add personalized ways to remember to both these and word flashcards. After 3-6 months, you have been introduced to the top 80% of words and kanji and can begin learning through immersion, creating in depth flashcards of new words straight from books or tv shows. I’ve been at it for about a month and am learning new things every day. I no longer have to wonder what I’m supposed to be learning or if I’m doing it right—Migaku lays it out so clearly. I feel like a child learning to read, with a thrill of pride and excitement every time I pick out a single word I understand in my new language in a random show or song or book. It takes time and effort, but so far it seems that this app really teaches you. It’s not just a money grab or a scam or a game, but it’s also not a textbook or lecture. In my humble opinion, it’s seems to be reaching above all of this. It seems to be the perfect way to learn a language :3
Can’t log in
Can’t even log into the app. Says my username and/or password is incorrect. However, I can log into the browser site perfectly fine.
Very cool but I have a problem reviewing cards
Love the concept and all! But I cannot review my card deck without several unwanted restarts of the app. Would be very cool if the cause of this could be fixed. It occurs often when I use the buttons at the bottom of a card to accept or decline. Then I see the onboarding screen and have to start reviewing the deck again which is annoying. iPhone 13 Mini, iOS 18.5. Thank you!
Wildly useful
From recording audio and making flashcards using YouTube to just taking lessons is so fun and effective. Must have for any language.
Utter Chaos
This is the most chaotic, cluttered, impossible to navigate Japanese language app I’ve ever encountered. Total disappointment.
Huge potential but buggy
I like this app and want to make it the center of my japanese learning, but it’s frustrating to have bugs. My main problem with the mobile app is using Youtube, the migaku mode don’t show the video’s subtitles anymore. They are detected as Japanese Subtitles, but i can’t display them anymore (« Your settings have hidden subtitles » is displayed even if that’s not the case) So i can only watch Youtube in Migaku with autogenerated subtitles which are a good fallback when there is no subtitles but a pain to use when you know there is proper subtitles that don’t want to be displayed
