What people like
- Actually improves your ear quickly
- Clean design with no ads
- Fun and intuitive to use
What they complain about
- Harsh clicking sounds ruin the audio
- Too many octaves for beginners
- Confusing interface and poor instructions
This app is the first step
I’ve been trying to learn ear training for years now but it just never clicked with me. Sonofield literally taught me every interval in just a few days, and It feels so intuitive. If you’re a musician, get this app.
No option to limit octaves
Would never recommend this app. To have up to 5 octaves off every degree is ridiculous. Will just make you feel bad about yourself. Whoever makes this app is too rigid in believing that every degree is a “feeling”. As a user you should have options such as less octaves and work your way up. I asked for a refund after 3 days and they won’t give me money back. They obviously do not stand behind their product.
MacOS Voice Mode Issue
I’m using it on mac and can’t input any voice in voice mode. I know it’s not for macOS but that will be helpful if you fix this. Thanks!
Uhhhh yikes.
This horrible clicking sound just won't go away, I figured if I paid for the other instruments they might not have the same issue but that was NOT the case :(
Needs to be more customizable
Too fast on the melodies for adept and too short in time. There should be an option to practice with unlimited time for that.
Best Ever Ear Training
Just do it
No difference between the so called “feeling”
This apps whole philosophy makes no sense
Very useful!
It’s a really good app for ear training! My only complaint is $18 for the pro version seems like too much. I would get it if it was like $5 but $18 seems like a lot for what it is. There are just too many other free resources for ear training for me to spend that much on one app.
No Features on Free Plan
Even though every mode has dozens of options, free mode allows a max of four on all modes except degrees, a very basic mode.
Promising idea, but missing a crucial feature
For someone who has a really awful ear and wants to improve, I loved the idea of this app dove in and bought lifetime access right away. But there’s a major flaw: it is impossible to set the training to just a single octave. You are forced to work across a minimum of 3 octaves right off the bat. I understand maybe that’s part of the maker’s philosophy, but… It’s a huge design flaw. It’s just not beginner friendly. For someone like me, even learning to identify intervals within a single octave and getting them right would feel like a major win. Instead, this app feels like it’s asking me to consistently sink balls from half court when I can’t even dribble. Otherwise very slick execution and cool concept. But I can’t get much use out of it. If they ever update this feature, I’ll come back to it.
So awesome
No monthly payment. Super well made. Incredible tool!
Not beginner
Clumsy interface, not intuitive, directions sorely lacking. Beginner mode should be 1 octave at most. Just not useful for an actual beginner.
Exactly what i’ve been looking for
Love the app and it has so much potential. Fun enough to play and i know my music practice will improve because of it. Just wanted to flag to the developers that on my iphone SE 2021, the app doesn’t hear my voice even when microphone is enabled, the drone also has a very poor sound quality through my earphones, there’s loads of crackles etc - I trust that these will be fixed in due course 🙏 Other than that i’ve been using it lots, have the paid version and i think i’ll use it lots in the future. Would love the sound quality of the piano for the melodies to be nicer, it sounds a little harsh and basic at the moment.
Great app, one bug
Having issues with Bluetooth, either phone audio output gets switched over with Bluetooth connected or when switching modes phone audio will switch over. Using AirPod pro and other headphones. To reproduce bug, have Bluetooth headphones connected, go to pocket mode, press play, add another tone and audio switches to phone speakers.
Incredible App
The best ear training app I’ve found. Intuitive layout, comprehensive, enjoyable way to learn, and no glitches. I practice now everyday as it makes ear training fun and rewarding. Appreciate the various modes from single pitch to vocalizing which helps expose any area that needs improvement. Thank you!
I comprensibile
L’interfaccia é incomprensibile e le istruzioni non aiutano . Non metto 1 stella perché spero di capire nei prox gg come usarla.
Great but could be improved
I find this app to be one of the best for training the ear to recognize scale degrees: the design is well-crafted, and the sounds are particularly pleasant and relaxing. That said, I’d like to suggest a few changes that, in my opinion, could make it truly perfect: Drone customization: It would be helpful to choose the key of the background drone, so that one can practice several times on the same tonic without random changes. Octave consistency in comparisons: When a mistake is made, the app plays a comparison between the selected degree and the correct one. However, these tones sometimes belong to different octaves, making the comparison less effective. The same issue occurs with the other degrees shown in the circle, which often aren’t in the same octave.
Don’t forget usability
Looks nice and professionally done. But!! What about the usability / learnability? The first experience is confounding. It’s playing charades with you when it could just be prompting you with what to do. What is what? It’s trying to tell you what you did vs. the correct response but this is totally unclear. When you get it right that’s feedback is not obvious, and when you get it wrong that’s also not obvious. As a career UX designer, my advice to the developers is to watch a few new users try it for the first time, to discover the blind spots in the design, particularly around learnability.
Great app
So impressed by this app. I’ve been making more progress in the last month on ear training than in the last ten years. It would be good to get chord recognition in there too. Though maybe that will come naturally as my ear improves? I’m not sure.
No
I've been doing this for 2 months pretty much every day and a half and still on 1 3 and 3. There is no feeling states I don't understand what the feeling states is so the higher octives I get wrong a lot.
Just a few asks
Love the app, my favorite ear trainer on IOS. I would love it if you had the app keep stats for each level so you could maintain learned skills and observe your progress. Another app, functional ear trainer, does this well by showing you which intervals you succeed/struggle with in percent form. Also perhaps add different timbre options for the drone and notes to help stimulate different brain parts.
Time limit
This app is great except its not for beginners! Should be able to set a repeat of 3 tones or user defined timer. Im beginner and fail every level except the first 2 levels…because if you dont answer in 3 seconds you fail. If I was able to hear the same tone 2 or 3 times before answering on each level I would be more inclined to use the app every day… its NOT for beginners. Great layout and concept. Im just going to use your youtube video for practice instead
Brilliant Design
This app has helped me improve my ear. Its’s beautiful design is intuitive and effective. I love all the different modes. Pocket mode is especially helpful. The stats show me exactly what I need to improve.
Please fix mic button
I love this app. I do think it’s fairly revolutionary as it states. However, on the ‘vocals’ mode, my mic button is so sensitive that often I will press it and it will immediately trigger then cancel as if I have taken my finger off of it, so I don’t get the score for that note. Please make it either so it can’t be unpressed for like 1 second after pressing, or allow a toggle in the options. This would also help people using their instrument to sight play instead of sight sing
Profound Improvement In Developing My Ear
Using Sonofield has improved my ear more than any other app/program/tool that I have used. I honestly can’t believe how much my ear has developed. I perform weekly and I have had a much easier time and have been so much more comfortable navigating the improv parts of our set since using Sonofield. Thank You!!!!!!!
Tuning
A useful tool but it would be even better if the tuning was refined. Some of the intervals are sour.
Loving but
This is amazing, and yes I’ve paid for pro, and mostly worth it. Sadly you can’t reset scores and there’s no solfège! Otherwise worth it, but solfège is necessary to internalize intervals! Thanks
A lot of potential, nice UI, but many ease of use issues at the time of release
Recommend interactive help, and more options to make it easier to progress. For example, allow to reduce the octave range.
Incredible
How is this app free??? An incredible ear trainer that you *need* to be on.
Fit my needs
This app is amazing, well designed and great to have for free but even better with the paid version.
