Not what I thought it would be

I thought this was to help learn the fretboard without holding the guitar or even requiring a guitar. I thought this was to learn finger placements by having a virtual fretboard.

Would love sheet music training for note names

Hi! I love the app, its a great way to memorize the note names. I have one ask for the app: can you include sheet music notation for the note trainer? I am trying to learn how to read so it would be helpful. Even for people who don't care to read, an option to add an octave marker (E3 vs E4) would be helpful, since that can help you figure out which E's are the same and which are different, for example. I think having a note marked on sheet music is the best option as it is very visual, but let me know what you think! Really like the app otherwise, let me know what you think

Could be great…

Lots to like about this app but it’s missing (imo) a couple of key features. - to be able to drill the same note/chord/progression a certain number of times before going to another. This would let you drill the same chord/etc in various locations, or fingerings. - to be able to program your own progressions, such as in iReal would be nice - and for $15, it should really have an integrated metronome and be able ask you to keep up with the progression in time. - to be able to hit the notes in any order instead of prescribed order would be.a good improv mode - also, for $15 and since it’s detecting pitch, anyway… why no integrated tuner?

could be better

For what it costs, I was expecting more. Some things that feel like no brainers to me: showing the note on the treble clef, and showing the fretboard for scales. Something that would be nice given the technology is giving a reference note and then asking to find another note (interval ear training). Also, a way to gamify it (e.g. streaks, quests) would be nice to have a sense of reward. Overall a decent practice tool to start learning the fretboard, but given that it's paid it could be a lot more.

If you are serious about guitar, you need this app

I use Solo every day. I run just 10 minutes of fretboard drills and 10 minutes of interval training over various scales. You can use it with a metronome to gauge your speed and improvement. Thank you for creating such no nonsense application for people who are serious about learning to play the guitar.

Technical difficulties galore

I like the app in theory but in actuality it doesnt work because it wont detect the notes. Ive done all the trouble shooting. Even when it sometimes works it only detects half the notes and it wont move along on the exercise. I really wanted to like it. Wouldve been worth $15 if it worked

Disappointed

I recently started using this app. Viewed training videos. This app isn’t for beginners and maybe not for intermediate level players. I’m a visual learner; however, I’ve been told by my guitar instructor that I have a talent for knowing notes/chords by ear. I was expecting an interactive fretboard when doing scales. I also would like the option of seeing each note played in a scale instead of only seeing numbers (1, 3, 4, 6, 7).

I’m now looking forward to further exploration of what the app can teach to fill in the gaps I have ignored in the past.

2 1/2 stars

I saw that I could use an audio interface with this app (class compliant) Witch I already have. After setting it up into the device no sound reaches the app. After reading the troubleshooting Section and following the instructions it still doesn’t register. I don’t like bothering people around me by playing with the amplifier, no choice but to do that now. The $15 spent on this app could be been spent on something else.

A great idea but too expensive

The idea behind the app is amazing and I could see myself improving with the practice. I am a beginner with an electric guitar though I have regular practice with an acoustic. This is simply a tool in addition to regular development of one’s guitar skills. I regret buying it for almost €18. I do not think it has the value to justify the price. Maybe I will come back to the app later as I do find it useful to make sure you are hitting the intervals well. But for now I would rather put the money towards lessons and would only keep the app if it were between a third to half of the current price

Totally confusing app. Can’t correctly identify a note it’s asking for half the time. After a little bit I’d start playing wrong notes on purpose and it would register them as correct. Great app

Love this app. Its a great practice tool for me. One thought for an improvement is to have a mode that plays a pitch that you have to match with your instrument, without telling you what note or notes are being played. That would really help me develop my fretboard knowledge as well as my relative pitch.

Abandoned by Developers - Decent App as it Sits

Good app for what it does, but don’t expect a ton of development or bug fixes / innovation from the developers. This was a fairly expensive application that has since been largely abandoned by David and Tom. I’ve had a few email exchanges with David about it and they always seem to have something in the works, but nothing ever comes of it. So, for what this app does today, it works well, but when you purchase an app for $10, I’d expect a little bit more in terms of future updates and innovation. Personally it kind of feels like a money grab if I’m being honest.

Nice practise tool

Nice practice tool. A few things I’d like to see…1. It would be nice to be able to define my own chord progressions. Copy/edit the current ones. 2. It would be nice to be able to randomise the order of chords in an exercise, and the keybof the exercise. 3. Long shot: it would be nice to have a nice simple accompaniment playing while you play notes for a particular chord. Maybe bass and drums, or a subtle synth. Just something that established the chord so you can also hear the functionality of the notes. Also needs my favourite things, and moanin :P

Far Too Limited For $15

I wrote a giant review and unfortunately lost it, so I am keeping this short: This app is crude and left the product development stage too soon. Features that many would consider basic do not exist. I would expect more from an app that costs $15. I would probably value it at $1 out of generosity. My advice: hold off on purchasing until several updates are released.

What about singers! A new Instrument please

This could be great for singers. All you need is a button on the main screen which when pressed emits the current tone expected as a short beep. This enables the singer (and players of non fretted instruments) to synchronise their pitch with the app. Also to re-pitch if they get lost. Voila a whole new market ! Simple BlueJazz

Good, still could be better

Very good software, the reason for 3 stars is - one need to pay for it (quite a lot as for AppStore apps), and there are few things which are a bit annoying. I’d give 3.5 star if had a choice or maybe 3.75. What I’m missing is: for very standard II- V- I progression there is no choice of making II chord just simple minor with b3 instead of 3rd. Every time soft starts one need to navigate to what is needed, from my perspective it would be better if soft remember last choice, there are favourites, that’s Ok, usually we are working on something for quite sometime and it would help to get on screen what was last used. Good idea and I hope It’ll help a lot in developing improvising skills. All the best guys and keep going.

The tool I was looking for to understand the fretboard

GOT TO SAY that the fact that I know in a second where and what I’m doing on which notes feels incredible, and it’s NOT TRIVIAL AT ALL. I recall a few months ago when I was frustrated, and I didn’t know how to memorize the fretboard, let alone understand why triads appear the way they do or how to form one on the fly. The only thing that kept me going was the fact that obviously others know it, and that I’m not an idiot, but I couldn’t figure out how to train myself. SOLO totally paid out for that. Add to that the real power of solo understanding intervals, and WOW, I think this was the single most powerful and breakthrough improvement I had. One thing I hope they add is statistics to see how fast you find whatever notes the app asks you to. THat would help visualize the improvement.

I’ve only had this app for a day and it’s really helped me with my playing! The only thing I would suggest; I’m not a jazz fan. I’ve tried to listen to it and learn to like it for years but I just can’t. I get that this product isn’t really aimed at learning songs and is about learning intervals, but I’d absolutely love it if you could add some classical pieces, rock songs or maybe even some Spanish pieces. It would really help musicians like me to engage more. Keep up the good work! :)

Could have been made for beginners too, but it isn't

Lack of the ability to practice chord tones in a single key makes this app an intermediate guitar experience required app. Would have been so easy to make single keys available to draw in beginners to learning chord tones in a key across the whole fretboard. The closest the app gets is continuously changing keys after each chord, which is beyond a beginner to practice chord tones with. Opportunity missed to attract beginners and keep them for a long time and I'm looking for another trainer app due to this oversight.

Good but needs improvement

I've only spent 30 minutes with the app so far. If the designers read this, I think it would be much better if the app played the root or chord in the background to provide some context and substance with how the notes sound in key over the chord. Good for ear training that way. It almost seems like randomness to me the way it is now.

Anything Tom Quayle

I have been studying Tom Quayle for a year and three months now. Anything that comes from him is guaranteed to make you move forward with your playing. The Sólo app is a great tool for fretboard visualization and for acquiring ideas for improvisation. I like to work with the jazz standards and intricate scale sequences. It’s a great tool for me to get ideas and feel more comfortable when going through the changes of the tunes. The combination between mindful, consistent practice and the proper material is very effective. Tom’s is the proper material. You just have to practice.

It just about sums up my frustration with trying to learn guitar theory, the language used is totally alien to me and it makes no sense. Really great first version of the app. Runs very smoothly, and microphone picks up every note very accurately.
