Excellent for using French in every day life
I signed up to Sylvi after spending 2 years learning French on DuoLingo. I learned a lot on DuoLingo, but never felt I had a strong grasp of day to day conversational French. Sylvi is very focused on helping users get to using the language more naturally, whether that’s reading the news or using the excellent pen pal function, which will create an instant lesson based on your actual use of the language. There is also an option to create a tailored lesson plan, depending on how much time you wish to spend each day. Overall it’s an excellent app and I feel my French progressing to a more comfortable level, where I’m confident in using it in real life situations.
Not for beginners
Looks good but jumps right into complex conversations almost immediately leaving you confused and frustrated. Waste of time!
Great to build fluency
I’m really glad I stumbled onto Sylvia following the recommendation of someone I saw on TikTok. I think what it does really well is help you learn in context. Immersion is so key and I really love that you can speak to your penpals and get real time answers. For instance, when the World Cup was going on, I was supporting Spain and you know they’d be able to answer me and talk to me about the game which I thought was great. For me, those types of little nuances I think is a really good touch. I’ve restarted my Spanish fluency journey. I was in another app which is more gamification than learning IMO and it didn’t really help me to retain the knowledge. whereas here, I feel like this is doing that a lot better and one of my biggest things was not being able to speak the language. now I feel like I’m getting tons better at doing that so I definitely recommend for anyone who just wants to get a lot of speaking practice and also be able to learn from their mistakes on the go. Sylvi also does this really well in terms of correcting you as you speak. You get a report at the end of the week which highlights your strengths and weaknesses which is good in just understanding your level progression from A1 -> C1 etc. the mini lessons of the day are cool, but would love a place where they’re stored so I can always go back to them as needed. I haven’t used much of the social features but so far I’m liking my experience a lot. Word and phrases come to me faster which is a good sign.
Used to be good 😔
Much more accessible and fun when it was free to chat with Sylvi, which was the main reason I installed the app. It’s nice for a review app but any questions you have can’t be answered easily anymore which is becoming a problem…
Lifetime Subscription option
Can there be a lifetime subscription option? I think the app is great but I’d rather pay a one-off payment rather than annual subscription (which is quite high)
Amazing language learning app
I’ve been using sylvi for a few weeks now and can honestly say, it is one of the best apps out there for learning and assistance of a language. The layout of the app is really simple and easy to use, paired with a really good penpal system which can make learning a language actually interesting and something you *want* to keep doing. Already I’ve made more progress with natural conversational skills in the short time I’ve been using the app compared to something like Duolingo or Babbel. Definitely check out this app if you are wanting to be more conversational and natural whilst learning a language!!!
I gave up with this app
I wanted to use the speech options so I could practise spoken French - it does not work 98% of the time - simple words it gives strange options back. I said something in English and it gave a French phrase back and told me to be civil and not use strong language - erm - what ? I ask to skip the telling the time lessons - but it keeps giving them back to me - it just ends up bring tedious - and with the latest update I have to pay for it to listen instead of typing - so I have to subscribe to something that doesn’t work ? Erm, no, I dont think so - byeeee
Gut, mit Einschränkung
Ich teste gerade. Ich finde die App im Aufbau sehr gut. Ich finde es eher nervig, dass man das Gespräch nie Beginnen kann und dass der „penpal“ nur pro forma von sich erzählt. Das wäre interessanter wenn man etwas mehr sich austauschen könnte und auch mit Bezug auf das Gespräch davor etc. Und für eine App die KI basiert ist finde ich es schwach, dass man nicht auf Deutsch Erklärungen und Übersetzungen bekommen kann.

The app has very little languages to choose from but it’s definitely better than the toxic relationship I have with Duolingo
Easy to use and rewarding
This app really clicked for me as someone who reads French pretty well but wishes they could speak it more fluently. It’s way better than any other AI language app I’ve tried. After a few weeks, I’m feeling the benefits of targeted and constructive feedback. And I’m actually enjoying conversing daily with French speakers, who feel “real”, in a safe and unintimidating space.

I think this app is awesome, but I wish it had more. Especially for the unpaid version. I’ve been doing a free trial and I love the penpal feature. I am not confident in my conversational Spanish and so this has been so amazing. I wish the app could detect your common mistakes and make daily lessons based off of them. I think this would be awesome.

I initially wrote a review some months ago, praising Sylvi for its intuitive features and unique workflow, but lamented some minor bugs that I’d experienced. I think it’s fair to say that with many apps, that’s where the exchange would have ended, with a generic response from an ambiguous developer that didn’t really signal interest about the feedback. I’m pleased to report however, that Sylvi and the team behind it is a different story. I was reached out to by one of the marketing team, who invited me to discuss my experience with the app in a casual online call. They were so happy to listen to my anecdotes and even invited me into a community where people shared their own wants and wishes for the app. The minor bugs are addressed rapidly and hardly interfere with the app itself. As for the app itself: it really works. So much of the barrier behind learning a language is having ways to actually practice speaking it. Often in real world practice, foreign language speakers who know English tend to switch to it, especially when you are at a beginning stage. (unless you pay them!) So for my journey with rediscovering French, this app was really invaluable in building a great foundation of confidence. A few weeks ago, I was in Belgium for a TCG tournament, and several of my opponents were French speakers. I can say that this app is honestly the primary reason why I was able to have thought-provoking discussions about the metagame, or receiving suggestions about how I could have played better, all in a foreign language. During the weekend, I spoke with Uber drivers and restaurant owners in French. This is what the app excels in; simulating conversations around your interests and giving you the tools to talk about them in practice. I’ve used the app for less than a year, and can already see massive progress. This app is not a magic solution to immediate fluency, nothing is, but it provides a fantastic framework towards fluency that rewards the time you put into it with tangible results.
constant subscription asking
I really liked this app when I first got it. Now when I try to talk to my Penpal it won’t let me and just asks if I want to join their subscription over and over again. It keeps asking me to start a free trail. EVERY time I open the app too. Wish they didn’t do that. Hope it’s just a glitch and they fix it soon.

Game changer
Sylvi has given me so much more confidence. Other apps have taught me vocabulary and others sentence structure but until you’re putting it into practice it means nothing. It’s been a game changer for me!
Sad
Downloaded hoping to see what languages to learn. Realised Te Reo Māori isn’t one and I’m trying to strengthen my knowledge and understanding of my home language so I deleted the app.
Have to pay, falsely advertised
You have to pay to even use the main functions of the app. Paying for a good app is fine but why try to hide it? It was advertised with an impression that it was free. It was purposely misleading and for that I do not support this.
Better everyday
If you’re serious about learning a language, then this app is worth the pricetag. It’s AI lessons feature is very unique and tailored to your learning. The team is also very responsive and friendly, which has helped to improve the app gradually overtime.
Not even a taste of what makes this app special?
The main part they advertise isn’t even available for trial. The only thing that makes this app any different from other language apps. I downloaded it excited to try since it didn’t thrust me immediately into paying but the only thing i wanted which was texting practice is paywalled? Sure the talking is free but anyone could use like AI or friends for that… Very disappointed.

Looked like a solid app but unfortunately i couldn't do anything with out spending money on a membership. Even a limited chat system would be better than having to pay a subscription.
Amazing language learning app
I’ve been studying Spanish for years now, but this app has helped me to improve my confidence when speaking, and has many different ways to practice, making it easy to come back to everyday. I love that it explains why something is wrong and even creates a lesson for you on that mistake so you can improve. I would highly recommend this app.
Cost?
Can’t send a single text without having to pay, is this just me or is this just an app which you advertise as free but then make unusable without premium?
Money hungry, poor
It is a well made app however they immediately ask you for a subscription as soon as you open it. The AI is poor, just speak to ChatGPT for free.
Great language-learning tool
I love this app! I have been using it for three weeks and it has already improved my conversational German noticeably. I did Duolingo and it was fine of course, but Sylvi is actually getting me to speak, and responding, and gently correcting - and I love it! Strong recommend
Not free for ANY use
You can’t even start without paying. A 2 week trial does not count.

The speaking exercises aren’t great. The amount of times I had to repeat something (how on earth did it hear me saying “votre vol” and “votre couvert”?) was so frustrating. Robots aren’t gonna replace human teachers, which would surprise no one
A fun, flexible way to learn
The app gives a lot of different ways to learn: chatting with real people, chatting with AI bots, giving flashcards to help you learn vocab, chatting and current events. I find chatting with bots really helpful as a good way to practice things I’m too shy to try saying IRL to humans. There is helpful feedback on my mistakes. There are several different ways to learn and practice that it really makes it easy to dip in each day.
Scammed out of $65 dollars
I’m not the type to write scathing reviews and I was really excited about this app but I couldn’t be more frustrated at my experience. Not only are you essentially forced to subscribe once you open the app but after I signed up for a one week trial — and then deleted my account not because of the app but realizing I wouldn’t have time to use it fully, I was then charged for an annual subscription no longer having any access to the account I was now paying for. I would have been ok paying this amount if I could actually use the app, but this is not the case. I reached out to customer service with no reply. And the peppy “we’ll help you with anything” message of the app could not be more upsetting. As a broke college student who was only trying to improve my Spanish I could not be more angry. At the very least I would like access to the account I paid for, if not a full refund.

Amazing app!
A brilliant app and super well thought-through. Pressure free practice, which builds little lessons based on the grammar you’re actually trying to use. I haven’t seen an app like it - definitely designed with the learner in mind and so fun to use! I feel like I’m actually making progress and building confidence. Thank you Sylvi team!
