What people like
- Easy to set up and use

- iOS app lacks VPN on demand feature
- Connection drops frequently and is unreliable
- iPad app ignores landscape orientation mode
Works great!
I’m using self-hosted NetBird for remote access to my homelab and LAN. It is stable with macOS and iOS peers connecting to a provmox ve container peer. The very comprehensive docs and terminology (groups, peers, users) takes some time to absorb but keep at it and you’ll be rewarded nicely! The exit node option is a great bonus too.
Not usable
This app is unusable due to connection issues and battery drain problems. It also has odd defaults not present on the netbird client on other platforms.
Lack of an iPad landscape optimized interface.
When I use the app, it is always oriented in portrait mode rather than landscape mode. All text and UI elements are tiny while using the app in landscape mode on iPadOS.
Unstable
So sad that is so unstable. I need to manually disconnect and reconnect 3-4 times per day. The connection shows as if everything’s fine, but nothing works on my iPhone, no connection to the internet. Only a hard disconnect and reconnect of NetBird fixes that. I find it hard to rely on NetBird, now that I’ve switched everything over from Tailscale, which in hindsight was phenomenally stable in comparison. Also, NetBird drains my battery at an unprecedented speed, by midday my battery level has often gone to 40%, which was no issue at all with Tailscale. I really want to like NetBird, but the iOS app is making it very hard…
Quoting Apple: “It just works”
I like when things work as intended and does what it says it does.
Didn’t work
After connecting i tried to open other applications and lost connection…
Gut.
Unreliable
App and VPN setting in iPhone says connected but unable to access any services routed through NetBird randomly, on iPhone 13 ProbMax, iPhone 14, and iPhone 16 pro max. Great idea though but this issue needs sorting as it prevents large scale deployment.
Mixed performance
The app is simple enough to get going quickly. I love NetBird, having replaced a WireGuard onsite network. However, not everything is great. My main gripe with the app, is that it seems incapable of switching between Cellular and WiFi reliably. I find myself repeatedly having to open the app to fiddle with it, maybe login again, etc to the point where I completely disabled it over Cellular. Does it have anything to do with the settings I wonder? I had to deactivate lazy connections to be able to adopt a peer. Ut should it be active to get reliable connectivity switching ? No idea. I wish the app could provide some insight or guidance here. Regretfully this is where NetBird should shine, but it doesn’t. Hence I give it 3 stars for excellence on WiFi but frequent failure over Cellular (and yes, I had 3 bars of 4 😉).
Glass look 🤢🤢🤢
They’ve just made me actively not want to use this app, no VPN on demand and now full of the worst UI in decades.
Great one
Thanks for the app and the service! Any chance for adding option like “let humanity be destroyed, infrastructure burned and so on, but don’t make me log in every time FFS”? Api token maybe? Federated login with email only doesn’t allow to use auto-fill too. Not cool imo
keine Peers erreichbar
Es gibt keine On Demand Funktion.
It works :)
It works good. One suggestion would be to allow turning on and off entire Networks. For example, if I want to ensure that I’m connected to k8s dev network, but not to prod network then turning on / off entire Networks would be a handy feature.
Don’t work DNS
The site's DNS doesn't work, it just won't open. I have clients on Android, Linux, Windows, Macos but this problem is only on iOS VPN just doesn’t work
Good but can be better
Bug
Since I updates to the version 0.0.15, the app tells me im disconnected, even if I am connected
Einfach super
Klappt alles, macht Spaß! Danke
Constant issues and frequently out of date
The single least reliable application I have had the displeasure of using Will consistently disconnect in the background, crash, hang, generally unpleasant and bad. If you don’t turn on lazy connections you get terrible battery issues, if you do you get disconnected after your phone is off for more than 15 minutes and routes will just sometimes not work when reconnecting. They do not keep the runtime version up to date and is consistently well behind all other platforms. Sometimes I wonder if it’s completely unmaintained.
Battery Drain
Promising
Gave it a test run and played around with the admin portal and its quite easy to set up but its not for me just yet. My entire internal infrastructure and dns configurations are mainly ipv6 with no real management over ipv4 except for dual stack for external access. If I were to use netbird in its current state then I’d have to work backwards and configure ipv4 statics and reservations for my servers and dns which Im not too keen on doing so I’ll have to pass for now. I’ll revisit it whenever ipv6 is supported.
Best VPN out there
Self hosting both management server and all of my family devices and it works flawlessly, DNS queries sometimes leak through during startup which caches wrong resolution on mac client but its not a big issue.
Ugh
I swear to God in the worst way at the worst moments when I remember to check this app is off not connected and leaving me vulnerable what’s the point!!!
Quality of life features Missing
I love your service, it works really well. I just wish for an implementation of VPN on Demand and it would be perfect
Unreliable
The function called “VPN on demand” not implemented, which makes it way less efficient battery wise then tailscale. It also keeps disconnecting. People have been asking for this for a longtime on github. Seems like the IOS stuck in beta. Great infrastructure let down by a weak IOS client.
Trust WLAN
No Landscape Support? No On-Demand? No Shortcut Integration?
Being unable to use this app in landscape on iPad is really inexcusable at this point in time. Also needs to add on-demand VPN for both iOS and iPadOS, and/or at minimum integrate into Shortcuts to allow users to create an on-demand VPN themselves. The WG app has this natively, as does Tailscale. Not sure why NetBird is falling behind here. The single star is for the app, not the service itself, which is solid. Unfortunately, the app hampers the ability to enjoy the service.
Updates
The only thing preventing me from a five-star rating is the pace of the mobile updates. I wish they would update it more frequently.
Works, but ugly ipad experience
I have enjoyed deploying and working with netbird, but the ipad app is a let down for me. The UI feels like it hasn’t been properly thought about, one example is that the app does not load in the correct orientation when using an ipad in landscape mode (e.g on a keyboard / dock) - this should be a straightforward fix that would make the user experience so much easier.
Rapidly becoming one of the best.
I’ve been using the self hosted version for a few months now and this team is squashing bugs very quickly! I had a different wire guard solution setup as a backup, but I haven’t had to use that in a month and a half. I rarely write reviews, but I felt the need to give these guys some credit.
App won’t even work
As stated app simply doesn’t work at all. I tried on my work android phone and that worked right away after login. This one will successfully log in then go back and be in a connecting state indefinitely. Very disappointing I was hype to try but this is an immediate red flag
Good but not updated?
Working well but the netbird client is in version 0.41.3 on all the platforms except on iOs / iPadOs where it remains hopelessly in version 0.36.4-dev! Why isn’t it evolving as fast as on other OS?
No iPad app
Please develop proper iPad app. Login process is not as smooth as Tailscale.
dns server
The custom DNS server is not available and cannot resolve private DNS
Invalid signup?
Not impressed with the idiotic sign up process that doesn’t work. If they can’t even make that work, I can only imagine how secure their platform is.
A Good Start
As of now, custom DNS servers behind peer relays are not resolving. If you rely on local DNS resolution for internal services your out of luck. Another annoyance is the lack of any logs for the wiregaurd connection making it basically impossible to troubleshoot if the connection isn’t working for whatever reason. All in all a good start as the basic functionality is working for peer to peer connections UPDATE: 3/25/25 Custom DNS is functional, albeit not 100% of the time. I often have to disconnect and reconnect for resolution to continue or start working. Sometimes resolution won't work at all for a few minutes after first connecting. Still no logs either which is a bummer.
Horizontal Screen Suppport
This app needs to support iPad in landscape mode. Also when tapping to copy hostnames please provide an option to copy the ip address as well.
Connecting to my internal resources in a few clicks
Greta stuff, all my private resources are easily accessible. On top I can use SSO and MFA integration. Well done!
Change server does not work
When changing the server, I get an error that it’s an invalid server address, but the netbird page loads in the browser on the same phone. And yes, I made sure to type in correctly.
Very good
But update client version please
