After 7 years…

I’ve been using this app daily for almost 7 years, and I’ve never before felt prompted to write a review, despite always loving the app. Thank you SO MUCH for dark mode!! You have made my user experience so much better. I really love this app, it has been such a great vocabulary builder for me for Japanese, and I’d definitely recommend it to others. If there was one thing that concerned me it would be pitch accents though. I’m trying to learn Japanese, and because I don’t know them myself, I can’t really tell if the pitch accents are correct, or there at all. I repeat the sentences to learn them, but if the pitch accents are not correct it means I’ve learned them all incorrectly.

I'm sorry that I gave you the wrong extension for my phone.になってたけど、「どこにもmy phoneに当る日本語部分がないけど」って言いたい! これ以外にもそういう意訳が混乱を招く部分が多い。 ただそれらが改善されたら神アプリとも言える。

Community Courses

This app is phenomenal for its Japanese and Chinese courses. However, there are also community courses that are only addable in browser. (There's a really good one for Korean just called "Korean 01") It would be nice if this functionality were advertised in the app, as this would lead to more quality community courses.

Effective learning, could be better with dark mode

I finished my first 1000 Japanese words! I had not been able to make vocabulary learning a routine until now. The difficulty of example sentences and the automatically played pronunciation are perfect for me. As a visual learner, I also found the pictures for each sentences fun and helpful. That said, I think the app would benefit from having a dark mode theme. It would be lovely to spend my sleepless nights learning some new words. :)

Simple and Effective

This is a simple and effective way to learn new vocabulary... when it works. Unfortunately, the last few versions have introduced features that are of dubious value (e.g. answering using numbers), along with many bugs and annoyances. I used to be able to enter answers using romaji or hiragana, and had always wished I could use kanji too. Now, all answers must be entered using romaji. If I try to enter hiragana, very strange things happen (e.g. typing KA inputs あ, and when i hit 'delete' to correct, I end up with ああ). Also, for no apparent reason, the app will now just crash in the middle of a review. I also wish there were more example sentences to go with each vocabulary word - some have 2 sentences, but most only have 1. Some of the sentences are unique and interesting, while others are quite generic. I feel each word should have at least 5 interesting sentences so that the user can see the word in more contexts, quizzes are more difficult, and learning more active. Having said all this negative stuff, I have to say that this is one of the few apps I find myself using every day, and that's what makes it so effective. The choice of vocabulary is also generally quite good. I find myself running into these words repeatedly in the real world. I also like that there are different types of quizes.

Bug in 5.2.8 Needs to Be Fixed

I formerly rated this app 5 stars but unfortunately a bug in the most recent version is driving me crazy. I use the return key to hit the “Next” on the iPad app with an external keyboard. Unfortunately, in 5.2.8, you have to hit return twice to select next. When you are reviewing hundreds of words per session, this extra stroke up adds up quickly and my hands have started to hurt due to the extra stress of this repetitive motion. I hope this is fixed quickly and I can revert my review to 5 stars because other than this one super annoying bug the app is wonderful.

Should have the option of no Kanji

I came back to this app wondering why didn’t continue to pay for this app. So I took a test trial again today and remembered. You have option of studying without being quizzed on Kanji. I needed those early wins to keep me paying for it. I have no interest in writing Kanji and assimilating deep into the culture. I just want to speak it. even some japanese don’t know how to read and write kanji. Make it an option so causal learners can enjoy your app too.

Best Japanese flashcard app

I’ve been using the iKnow service since it was known as Smart.fm, and I’ve been using this app for about 10 years now. I’ve tried a lot of other Japanese flashcard apps, and this is definitely the best one that I’ve found. Their spaced-repetition algorithms that quiz you on vocabulary items just as you are beginning to forget them, works perfectly. According to my Study Progress screen, I’ve learned 4778 words using this app. That’s something that I’m proud of.

Worth the cost

I’m one of those procrastinators who studies for a few months and then stops for...more. During my non-procrastination time, iKnow has always given me the best learning rate of any tool. Everything has sentences, with full audio, Japanese text is always bigger than English text. Premade courses, a mode to study all your courses together, and my favorite thing: a sentence listening mode. Great for people like me who can listen along while working or working out. Passive learning when you are doing something else is better than no learning. It’s too bad the PC version doesn’t have it. The subscription cost keeps me longer before I fall back into bad habits (no app can fix my laziness but this one holds me the longest). It’s just easier to be motivated longer when you have to pay and get your money’s worth ! It’s in big thanks to this app that I can play video games in Japanese. Things I would love to see in the future: for each course to have a “story”, or multiple, that utilizes most of the vocabulary that was in said course. Sentences are great, but having short stories to test my understanding with would be even more awesome. And for the PC version to someday get the sentence listening mode.

Chinese-The Best

After searching and using 99% of the Chinese apps, this is in my top 5. It’s the most well rounded and user friendly course that actually helps early intermediate students continue inhaling vocabulary and sentences mining in an interesting way. I’m hoping that the developers continue to build on the Chinese courses because they’re sitting on a gold mine. Genuine Chinese language apps for the early intermediate self learner are scarce and this is the best on the market in my opinion.

Good tool!

Really enjoying going through the Chinese course with iKnow. Particularly love the sentence feature to give context when seeing words. It does however have some shortcomings that make me hesitate to give five stars. First off, it’s fairly common (and understandable) that the sample sentences will contain words we haven’t been exposed to yet. That’s fine but it would be helpful if there was a more explicit acknowledgment of that fact. Not really sure what it could be, but my ideal would be to clearly mark words “I’m not expected to know” (lest I wonder if I’m just forgetting), make them easy to look up (I currently am a compulsive Pleco switcher when using iKnow), and possibly even a quick shortcut to add the unknown word to a separate study list. Or to advance it from one of the later courses. Another annoyance I’ve had is with the dedicated sentence training feature, which feels a bit underpowered next to iKnow’s excellent core testing machinery. The issue I have with it is that there’s no apparent way to track my status on the sentences: the words have percentages, nice scheduling, achievements, etc. but the sentences are completely opaque other than a mysterious “level” that only appears in the per-course detail page on the website. I was hoping the sentence trainer could help me absorb the unknown words I describe in the last paragraph but as it stands it hasn’t been much use to me. I’m leaving these comments here not because I don’t like the app (which I pay a subscription for and spend 1hr+ a day on!) but because it feels like it has a ton of potential to be a truly excellent tool that’s genuinely different from so many other contenders in this space. For example, the sentences-as-context aides for learning words could be just the beginning: if I’m learning a new word like 解决, it’s genuinely helpful to remind me that I’ve already seen the first character in an earlier lesson in 了解. These words are foreign to anyone using the program and introducing new words with as much familiar context as possible is deeply helpful to help newbies make the connections needed to remember words. Anyway, all in all, really good and I’m excited to see where the developers take the idea.

Good app but needs work.

***Updated review*** 03/10/2018 As promised, I’m updating my review after having used this app on a daily basis since the huge interface update that landed a few months ago. First off I have to say that I really like the new interface. It runs a lot smoother and faster, it’s a little easier on the eyes, and they’ve gotten rid of of the swiping feature that often caused me to prematurely skip to the next card. THANK YOU for that. For those of you new to iknow, there is a wealth of content here. A sheer gold mine of Japanese vocabulary and example sentences. It continues to be a great tool in learning. For those of us who have been using it for a while, I did notice updated pictures, new example sentences and voice recordings for many words. This is a great help as you get to explore more uses for the same words. While the voice actor they chose performs the lines at a slower pace, it’s good for beginners who might feel the natural speed of the other recordings is too fast. For some reason, the new recordings also load at a slower pace. Not sure if it’s my device or not (iPad Pro 1st gen) Now, there are still a couple reasons I’m giving this app 4 stars. Call me hard headed, but It’s still missing a few things that would make this the be all, end all app for my vocab learning. 1. Cards are not customizable. It would be really nice if I could add my own pictures to the existing decks. Most of Core 3000 and above have no pictures attached to the words. This makes it difficult to visualize and I often have to reference Google images. This is one of the reasons I still use Anki. 2. Still no split screen view. Again, it’d be nice to be able to see my dictionary app while studying. Having to switch between apps, while not incapacitating, gets annoying after a while. 3. A rather stationary app. While I have seen some changes and additions to the most recent study material, it certainly doesn’t change as much as I’d like. People change and so does language. With apps like Fluent Forever on the horizon, I think it’s best that there be a plasticity to content and material. A simple common phrase section or word of the week can go a long way. Hell, throw in something crazy and unexpected. That’s the beauty of language, there’s always something more to learn. Regardless, I will continue to use iKnow on a daily basis. It is a very, very good app on the cusp of greatness. Some more customization and more updated material and it’d be throwing competitors under the rug. Until then, I will continue to use those competitors’ apps to fill in the gaps. Previous review: Early-Mid 2017 I've been using iknow for more than a year now, and it has been a foundational tool in helping me learn Japanese. The selection of 6000 words for the Japanese portion is great, the spaced repetition is second to none, the daily tracking keeps me on point, and the support for community created flashcards means an potentially infinite amount of content. So why only 3 stars? For one, there is still not support for split view which would help tremendously in my daily studies. I always have to slide my finger across from the right of the screen to bring up the dictionary app which sometimes accidentally causes me to make a selection in the iknow app. This disrupts the flow of my studies and is something that would not happen had there been split view app support. BTW, this IS a feature that is available in Anki, and the difference is insurmountable. The most recent updates have also made some audio unplayable on certain example sentences. While not a deal breaker, it's something that does break the flow of my studies and won't be helpful for new words and sentences. Also, the community feature was never implemented into the app, so you have to go to the website in order to find community flashcards. On top of that, they completely removed the community discussion and help sections of their website for unknown reasons. This was a great way to see how you were doing compared to others, and get tips on how to better remember words. To finish things off, 6000 words and example sentences is certainly nothing to scoff at. Most people will never get through most of them, let alone master them. But what about those of us that do? I signed up for a lifetime account because I was in this for the long haul, and a core 7000 and maybe even 8000 might be nice. The average Japanese college student knows between 40,000 and 50,000 words, so the content is there, now it's about doing the R&D and recording it which I know is time consuming and expensive, but new content has literally not been created for the iknow' Japanese portion in years. Even just 500 more words. C'mon guys. I hope that my concerns are at least taken into consideration, as I'm more than sure I'm not the only one that has them. Some of us use this app on a daily basis, and would just like to see some features that make the experience easier and more enjoyable. If at least on of these features and improvements are implemented, I will update my review. Thank you.

Useful service that needs polishing.

While the basic service is useful and the learning approach seems to be working for me. The service really needs to polish things for the Japanese learning experience. Main complaint is the lack of review features in the app. This is a serious omission. I also suspect that the overall service is earning its main income from teaching English to the Japanese and this is why the Japanese lessons are stagnant. Hopping for more in the near future.

Good overall but needs improvements

It's a decent app and I ended up paying the (very high IMHO) $100+ for a year of access. The example sentences are good and help remember the vocabulary and grammar in context. That said, whoever designed the client-server code is an amateur or an imbecile. The app is constantly stalled waiting for the server, instead of synchronising gracefully in the background. After a minute, it gives you the option to resubmit... Which loses your progress for that lesson. WTF? Who cares about synchronising progress every damn lesson? Also sorely missing a feature to add a word to study in advance, i.e. a word you want to stay studying now, instead of waiting months until it finally comes up in the arbitrary order they programmed. Come on, fix these two issues otherwise no way I'll pay this much money again. Fix these issues soon and I will enroll my two kids on iPads.
