Great app, but got puzzle scoring problems
I love this app, have been using it for years. However, there has been a long standing problem with the way it calculates scores for puzzles. In particular, not all puzzles get included in the scoring. Sometimes you can play a few and the scores never get updated. Or sometimes you solve a few puzzles with the top score, but your average score actually goes down. I usually reset my score after every 100 puzzles, and so it’s not that hard to see whether it’s updating it and if it’s accurate. I’ll be happy to give it 5 stars if this gets fixed.
Avoid this App
This app is defective on many levels eg - declares draws when clearly not the case. There was only the black king on the board with 3 white queens, white rook and White Castle and it declared a stalemate draw - advised me to take back a checkmate move - frequently offers poor suggested moves - doesn’t clearly show when you have been put in check - no explanation on puzzles The list goes on. Don’t waste your money like I did. Get something else

360 Chess mode?
The app works well on iPhone 17 series event though the update is a bit dated. Can we have 360 Chess option in our games? That randomised mode is frequently played in FIDE Chess tournaments these days, and I think it will be a good addition inside the app!

FINALLY v1.11.0 it got stabilized after YEARS!

Playing strength control not working
At the beginning of a game, the program works more or less at the preset playing strength. However, during the middle game it often pumps up its rating significantly (validated with Crafty). A player at a moderate 1600 should continue to play at this level until the end and not suddenly play flawlessly. This is particularly annoying during a Blitz chess game.
It works, but get the lite version
The title says it all- this works well enough; but it’s slow and the puzzle solutions are full of problems. This app was highly recommended to me by two good players, so it’s disappointing to find several mistakes in their puzzle solutions within the first day using the app. I do like the customization of the board and pieces available and the fact that I can review and analyze other games, etc.; but the interface could be improved quite a bit. Overall, it’s decent for an easy way to ply against a bot of customizable difficulty but there are better chess apps out there.

PGN would be nice
Great app. It would be helpful for reviewing games to be able to copy/paste PGN or even FEN data. Another wish is for more than one best-moves line, though I’m not sure where it could be fit on the screen.

It the best app
I have iOS 9,I think it the best chess app you can learn a lot from this app (auto rating, ant puzzle ) but it keeping crashing and crashing all time. Do wast your time and money they never try to fix it very good app but very very poor support.
Rating bug
Great chess game I’ve been using for years. Suddenly there’s a bug where after a game the computer says it will increase its rating to the maximum (2600) difficulty, even if I lose. It used to work well and increment based on performance and it was my favorite feature.
Lamest app
I love this app. However it has many problems and it really requires an update, is difficulty is not really in ordered of strenght as its rating in 1250 is more challenging than 1450, it would be better if they add a solution to this problen in the later update
Not Realistic
I’m getting sick and tired of this app. I’m a class A player (1800+) and like to play on the app on the rides home. No matter what setting I choose I get demolished at 1800. At the 1700 its too easy. I play live over the board tournaments all the time and rarely (never) do you see 1800 players attack wildly before they even develop. The app gets away with it because it has perfect calculation within a number of plays. If I wanted to play a harder level I would choose 2100+ in the settings. Please calibrate this app. If I wanted to play against a titled caliber player I would not choose the 1800 setting at normal. Other than that the app works fine.
Best chess app hands down
I have tried every one I could find sand nothing beats this. The puzzles it gives you to solve are great and if you think it is wrong and your solution is better it lets you convert the puzzle to challenge the computer and it's always right.

I'm revisiting my previous 5 star rating on this once Amazing app. It's sad to see that it hasn't received a single update since 2014. It's become more buggy over time and now it lacks serious functions and features :( I hope the developer pays enough attention to this. Thank you.
iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.x
It is great to see that the Shredder development team has continued to support this application. Such continued efforts are the hallmark of quality on iOS, and serve as the gold standard to all prospective developers. Thanks for a great app. Edit: The latest updates have been halfhearted at best. It would be nice to see the developers give this gem the attention and polish it deserves, as I'd love to increase my rating to 5-stars.
Still rocks after 2 years of no updates
I believe this is my best purchase on a chess app on IOS. I spent $7.99 in Feb of 2013 for this and after 10 years and many IOS version updates Shredder chess still is my go-to chess app for puzzles, playing, and learning. 1000 puzzles is a lot, and the best thing is I can continue playing against the engine at the position where the puzzle is solved for endgame practice.

Once great, now only crashes
I don't know what happened with this app. I used it for years and never had any problems. It was my favorite chess application. Now it crashes after ever other use. I have to continually delete and reinstall to make it work. Not worth the price they charge any more....
Chess
The app itself is rather good. The AI level is extremely impressive but, there is a but, the quality doesn't outweigh the cost. At nearly 6 pounds It bites of a ripoff, especially with all the excellent chess apps available. I would recommend this app if money is no object...

Good chess but few updates
So the chess is good fun and the coaching can be useful. I enjoy this app and the difficulty isn't so hard it's unenjoyable for mere mortals like me. However, the app gets updated so infrequently and it's annoying when things move forward but the app doesn't. I have an iPhone 6s Plus now and the app is scales up to fill the screen making it look poor. Please update when new screen sizes come out so we can enjoy Shredder at its best.
Keeps crashing - have to reinstall every week
I have it an extra star because it's shredder. However, at least once a week the app crashes and won't open until I delete the app and reinstall it. The downside of this is I lose all saved progress. This happens on the iPhone 6 Plus. It's been happening for quite some time, it's strange that the developers aren't willing to fix this massive bug.

Competent, engaging, makes you better
This is the best substitute I have found for other actual chess players; the difficulty scaling is great and give a good, surmountable challenge.
Hotspot conflict
While using hotspot , board/menu is not displayed properly and it is not playable. Many apps handle hotspot correctly. Been that way a while now. You would expect a better for a paid app. Chess Genius does it correctly.
Great but iPhone only
App works great and very good at matching the computer to the skill of the player. My only gripe is that the app is not also iPad capable (it works but the screen is not configured for the iPad losing the top section to iPad indicators). Why buy the app twice for each platform? Decided to try a different Chess app for the iPad (it happens to work on both iPad and iPhone) I wonder which I will prefer to use in the long run?
Problems of a once good app
Since iOS8 if my iPhone is shut off during a game, the app locks up solid & must be reloaded.

... as the other reviewer recently said, it's a shame the app isn't universal - t chess pro represents far better value fir money and to be honest it has a lot more functionality. I mean, I love Shredder on my iPod Touch but I've recently got an iPad 2 and I can't see the need to pay 6 quid fir shredder on that, too, as I have t chess pro which also has an in app option to allow the analysis engine to utilise the dual core iPad CPU. Until Shredder catches up with the competition by adding such options and by the very basic inclusion of clocks/time options, for example, it's going to start losing the race to apps like T Chess and Chess Tiger (simply 'Chess' in App Store), which I understand is soon to go to iPad, not sure if it's as universal or paid, but it will likely have the edge over Shredder when it does as Shredder doesn't appear to be moving with times despite being a great engine. in fact, you may as well opt for Stockfish at this point in time.....universal, incredibly strong and free as well...
Simple and great quality offline supported chess app
There’s no subscription you needed or many different courses. It’s very simple and intuitive chess app. I’m so glad that the developer still doing update work!
Won't launch
It simply won't open after a few uses and I have had to delete it and re-install it over and over.
Solid chess app
A very nice chess app on both iPhone and iPad. As mentioned earlier it's a shame the app isn't universal, but I don't begrudge the developer having to eat; if you don't want to buy it twice I suggest you exercise your right not to. Actual constructive criticism - it would be nice to have a more structured approach to learning an opening.

Great
After the recent update I now have more control with moving my pieces. Thank you developer for allowing me to disable drag and drop. Which previously ruined game play. Having this game for just over a week I am impressed how it adapts to my strength. However I would like to see - - landscape mode - chess clock / timer - better visibility fir taken pieces I am visually impaired and was excited by the voice over. This is excellent. Well thought off and making excellent use of iPhone accessibility features. Y Not sure the new pieces added in update are that effective. Keep up the good work.

I would give it full 5 stars if it allowed multi-player via games centre. I would like to have a serious game with a real person now and again to gauge how much i've improved (if at all). With this, it would be good if the multi-player game did not have to be real-time, but it could spread out over time. ie, I make a move now, the other guy after an hour, then me tomorrow...That would allow people to have 'casual' games that does not involve having to specify time and sit down to play. Other than that, it is perfect for me, as it automatically adjusts its level based on how good I get, which makes me always on my toes!!! Diamond!!!
Adequate but ugly
The engine does a perfectly good job of playing chess, but the interface is cluttered and the experience is badly thought out. Some examples; - every time you touch a piece to move, that piece wobbles back and forth - it is weird and unnecessary and cheap-looking. - there is a button right in the middle of the screen which changes you from playing black to playing white, and takes a go. Why is this odd feature the central button on the screen? Pressing it is almost always a mistake. - There is a dial showing Shredder's evaluation of the board, which looks like something from the dashboard of a car. It's the only such element on the screen and looks very out of place. - if you make a bad move, a message pops up telling you you are an idiot and offering you the change to take the move back. But you already have an undo button and you'll see it was a bad move when you lose your queen. This popup should never appear. These sorts of issues make the game feel slightly 'zany.' At this price, I'd expect some polish. Would recommend tChess Pro instead.
