Fantastic app. The new update could have been explained better but still my go-to Japanese app.
Update: I’ve continued to use the new version. It is quite good, and the new capabilities are helpful. I appreciate that it is completely free and that the developer is responsive to bug reports. I will continue to use this as my primary Japanese dictionary app, as I have for many years. Original: I have been using this app for 5 years as my go-to Japanese dictionary, and creating vocabulary lists of words I’m studying. Today, I open it and EVERYTHING has changed, without warning. I can’t find anything. I wasn’t sure it was even the same app. I thought my vocabulary lists were gone until thankfully I found them under the “learning” tab. I’m not against progress or change and I think over time, it will probably be an improvement. But to roll out a complete revamp without any sort of tutorial or explanation on an app that so many have depended on for language learning for so long is very disruptive. I think it would have been fine if there was an explanation that your old data is still in the app and instructions on where to find it.
Great app turned bad
I hate writing this as this used to be such a great app. But with the recent revamp there are so many bugs it’s not worth trying to use the new features. I like the flash cards but the constant issues with pasting from other apps makes it not worth it. I adjusted the settings as suggested to make paste automatic as it used to be. It worked for a while. But now it doesn’t actually look up the words until I hit search. Then sometime it brings up the word but won’t actually show the definition. Just too many bugs now for prime time unfortunately. I’m happy to donate to these guys and have in the past as it’s my go to app for Japanese but please fix these bugs.
Dev is Listening
I’ve written 2 reviews post big update July 2026 before this and at first the dev added the auto paste feature but it was bugged but after a recent update they fixed it. So it’s clear they are paying attention to all of the recent bad reviews based on the big update. I can’t give it 5 stars again yet because of the overall performance downgrade of the new version but at least I can now use imiwa how I used to. Hopefully there’s minor performance improvements over time. Also I do appreciate some of the features like pitch accent that were added. I do think there’s like a strong politically motivated anti ai bias at play that goes past the functional downgrades leading to a lot of the strongly negative reviews, that said there is still a noticeable performance downgrade compared to the previous version which is why I’m still only giving 4 stars for now even though it seems like the dev is trying.
The new UI
This was my fav app but I’m sorry the new UI is so annoying. Before it would automatically copy and paste into the app and literally show you the whole translation word for word and you click on the words you want to dissect. Now you gotta slap it into the tiny search bar and go to a tab to do it. It’s a small thing but the previous one was so perfect now I’m salty.
Superbe mise à jour, mais…
Bonjour. Une excellente appli depuis des années déjà, de très bonnes mises à jour, cependant, je trouve l’ordre des kanjis (trait par trait) beaucoup trop lent… Etant en boucle, il ne serait pas gênant que ce soit un peu plus rapide, voire comme c’était avant.
Excellence for years
Still my primary method for looking up things going on 10+ years. Zero ads or weirdness. Examples are largely pulled from normal Japanese usage. Let’s you save and export “favorite” word list.
AI Slop
Please just revert to the old version. You ruined everything that was good about the old version.
Good app, just needs built-in flashcards
Includes useful lists, but not a good way of practicing them.
Lookup on copy
This feature is gone now...? Please add that function back in.
Old version was better
I’ve been using this app for over 10 years and loved it for its simplicity. This new version just seems way overcomplicated. Everything takes way longer than it used too and is way more fiddly :(
Great after all
I take back my earlier criticism, turns out you can turn off the per app system confirmation for pasting, so now I only have to tap the paste icon in the app and the rest happens automatically 👌 This way I can appreciate the overall many little improvements like having kanji being easier accessible in their own tab 👍
AI junk and swiped
They swiped from the Japanese app too. Just stick with jisho.org
So close to perfection
The app is incredible. The formatting is amazing- and the sentence analyzer is something I’ve never seen before. It’s so wonderful to just copy paste and look at a sentence and save the words you don’t understand. High praises to the developer. This can’t have been easy, and it’s seriously so incredible. That said, I find there are two things that keep it from being the best Japanese dictionary. 1. No option to show pitch accent. Pitch accent is a major part of Japanese, and Japanese dictionaries (and others) have it listed. The data is there, but the option to show it is not. 2. No way easy way export to Anki. Takaboto on Android spoiled me with how easy it was to send flash cards over. Imiwa is currently (at least on my phone) incapable of even sending or saving tab separated words. The first problem is clearly a bigger deal than the second. But if these two things were possible, this app would crush all JE, EJ dictionaries.
Too glitchy
I really like the app, the interface, and its overall design and content. However, it’s TOO glitchy (I am using iPhone 13, iOs 18.1, but the app already glitched on earlier versions). Shortly after running the app, tapping the text field often does nothing. It takes several taps to access the text field and type or paste something in. Additionally, whenever I copy a word or sentence on my phone and then open the app (or reactivate it if it’s already open), it immediately asks if I want to paste it into the text field. This behavior is very annoying. I’ve had to switch to a different dictionary because of these issues. Please address these bugs.
Manque d’une option importante
Très bonne application, mais elle serait parfait si on avait la possibilité de tracer un kanji pour la recherche
currently cautious
I’ve loved this app for YEARS. it’s an incredible resource. but the recent update and use of AI gives me pause.
AI slop
New update ruined a perfectly good app. Forcing AI results into searches
Fast and good, but wish multi was better
Wish the way multi-pronunciation was handled better; ie separate entries for different readings and spellings Pleco handles that aspect better
Skewed
It offers in detail definitions of unpleasant or derogatory words applicable to other peoples but white-wash what is unpleasant to the writers herein. That is, even when compared to other reference materials. Egregious.
Imiwa
Application très bien Mai’s petit bémol les furigana ne sont pas toujours corrects à la lecture. Imaginez-vous en train de lire à un natif? Pouvez-vous svp améliorer? Merci beaucoup.
Love the new update!
A lot of the problems this app used to have are no longer relevant as of July 2026. A huge new update was released with its own Anki-style memorization tab for JLPT kanji AND vocab. The stroke order animations for kanji are also updated, and various forms of the kanji (sōsho, Simplified Chinese) are shown on the kanji entries now too. After this update, I cannot recommend this app enough for serious learners of Japanese.
Turned into AI-generated junk
Used this app for years since it was dependable and rock solid. Now they replaced the entire codebase (or at least the front end) with some AI generated trash that’s glitchy, unresponsive, and has a whole host of design and performance issues with it. Into the trash it goes. Way to ruin something great.
Been my go-to for years, but...
So i’ve been reliant on this app for about 6 years now. I esp like that I can make my own notes for an entry. But recently a few instances have come up whereby I’ll ask Japanese friends for some clarification on meaning/usage, and they’ll outright disagree with this app. True, their experience with the word may be limited, and a native user doesn’t necessarily a comprehensive understanding of their own language. The few times it’s happened I hadn’t saved the words to look up later in my regular Japanese 辞典. But it’s been enough for me to begin doubting this dictionary a little bit and wondering if I shouldn’t seek a “second opinion.” Edit to add: Occasionally, the examples are a bit unhelpful, as well. Take 消化不良 (しょうかふりょう). There are 2 example sentences, the second one of which is: 消化不良です。 I snorted out my drink at that one, and so did a Japanese friend. Like, “Can you give me an example of a sentence using ‘indigestion?’” “Sure: “‘It’s indigestion.‘” —It’s since become a running joke with us. “はい、消化不良です!“ (Also, not sure if this is just how imiwa? is integrated with the keyboards on one’s phone, or if it has nothing to do with imiwa?... But in case it does—In the past year I notice the handwriting board restricts you to a quick and uniform rhythm of writing the strokes; if you hesitate even a moment longer before finishing writing the kanji, it will just auto generate something straight into the imiwa? search bar. Super frustrating. It used to be that I could take my time trying to remember how to write something, but now no, now I spend time erasing what was auto-generated and starting over.)
The best Japanese dictionary but…
Why is the app size so huge??!!??? I’ve been using this app for maybe a decade now, because it is the best one as a Japanese learner. But it’s always had the one same flaw- ginormous app size, nearing 1gb. This is inexcusable, for a dictionary app of all things. I may have slightly more phone space than I did 10 years ago, but this still is a pain in the butt, and imiwa is still the largest app on my phone (!). If you need help with optimization, seriously, please reach out, I know folks that could help with this and this would be the one thing that makes imiwa perfect. :(
What have you done?
After the latest update this app is half as useful as it was before. Previously you could paste in a whole paragraph of Japanese and it would give you all the words, but now it just spits out all the individual kanji. My favorite app is a ghost of its old self. Please bring it back to how it was.
My go-to app
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seriously thought of switching to an Android phone, but every time, the thought process gets to “Oh. Wait. No Imiwa on Android. Hard Nope.” And that’s that. By the way, to the reviewer who complained about the example sentences being sentences you’d never use in normal conversation, true. But that’s not the intent. Like any dictionary, Imiwa gives usage examples so you can see how the word is used, not as conversation lessons for Real World Adventures. There are plenty of other apps for that. Granted, some of the examples are peculiar or even irrelevant. To the developer, it might be good to give is a way of reporting these off-base examples.
Ruined by the 2026 Update
I used to really like imiwa. It was my go to Japanese dictionary app. Offline, fast lookups, good kanji resources, example sentences, the works. I used it all the time. Then it auto updated in July 2026 and now it’s trash. ABSOLUTE TRASH! The new layout looks bad and is not intuitive to use. Search is messed up, it stutters when you scroll, and stuff like the clipboard auto search is gone. I have to tap around just to do basic things that used to be instant. I turned off auto app updates I was so mad. A bunch of other people are saying the same thing because it is vibe coded garbage. Bring back the old app!!
Tab separatd not working
Great dictionary but can't export out in a usable format. Please fix
No calligraphic search
How do you make a Japanese dictionary app and not include calligraphic search capability? I have 2 other apps that both allow you to draw kanji to search, which is often times much quicker and easier than searching with SKIP/radicals. I looked for this feature for 10 minutes and I guess it doesn’t have it. I’ve heard this is a great app, but I would love to see this feature added and I would consider trying this app.
Beware: Security issue, steals your clipboard data
Great app, but since updating to the latest iOS, I notice that whenever I open the app, it says ‘imiwa? pasted from WhatsApp’ etc. Seems to be surreptitiously copying private information from your clipboard like TikTok was caught doing. What does the developer have to say? What’s being done with all this harvested information?
Crucial
All I need is Google translate and this! Google and similar translation apps are good for roughly translating whole text, but Imiwa? breaks down the vocabulary so you can make sure that you’re getting it right. It also breaks down the kanji to help you understand it more deeply, recognize patterns to help you remember it and understand similar characters, and get the stroke order right (which is a lot more important than you might think for writing).
Conjugation table gone???
Conjugation table gone? I don’t understand why you would get rid of such a simple and effective resource????? All the “examples” don’t help. It’s clutter and visually unappealing. “AI” doesn’t make up for it. I’ll go to a real ai resource if I want that.
Great free app
I like the features of this app a lot, but I do wish that there was a way to deselect a word after accidentally adding it to a list.
Decent “kanji dictionary” held back by poor translations
While using this dictionary as an abroad student, I’ve been able to get a lot of use from it to help my Japanese learning, however the app has some big glaring issues. + The kanji database and info is great, usually giving clear definitions, as well as added Chinese readings. - Main issue lies with fact that the definitions for non simple words are usually poor. Either a group of synonyms can have the same translation with no nuance, or the translations are too broad with sometimes 12 different meanings. Moreover, the example sentences for words are near useless, with suspect Japanese translations, and sometimes fully incorrect English translations. They’re almost always overly complicated and hard to understand. In summary, a good kanji app, that will sometimes help you understand a Japanese word’s English meaning.
Ok but...
When I go into setting it refuses to let me turn off other languages. They do this by putting out of the reach of the screen. Please fix this. Also it’s not very good for learning Japanese so much as it is for searching for Japanese words. But still ok.
A great app
It’s good for looking up words/kanji/phrases and works well (it’s a dictionary) when reading along with something else to easily identify characters you couldn’t figure out by using the seen radicals.
Oh god why
This update (July ‘26) or complete re-do is just awful 😭 I am so sad. For years I have used the app multiple times a day for quick lookups, loved the detail and separate clear options from the left hand menu, loved the offline usability, loved the speed, and more. Now trying to do even just a simple search on the front (?) page leads to a mess of results, and the app stutters upon scrolling through them. And all to do what — support certain other languages’ translations through AI? If they wanted AI they could (and already would) go use AI on a different app!! No one needed this in Imiwa!! Ugh
Sort by A-Z function
Amazing app and I’ve been using it for about three years now. I’ve saved thousands of words! Could you add a ‘sort by A-Z’ function for saved vocabulary please? That would save having to do so by hand. Thank you and keep up the great work! ————- Edit: Also, I’d like there to be a search bar in the ‘my notes’ section so I can find a specific note quicker. Please and thank you!
Great app, horrible design
This is by far the best Japanese dictionary app available. However, it is totally insane that it should take up almost a GB of space. That's just lazy/sloppy design.
Pretty good but...
On iPadOS 13, 11 inch the settings menu starts halfway down and isnt able to scroll up or down, or exit it so need to restart the app. Also means I can’t turn off the other languages that I don’t use (French,Italian,German) so the interface is messy. Otherwise a solid app.
imiwa? のアップが大好き❤
Guys, I downloaded this app in 2009. TWO-THOUSAND AND NINE. And it is still my go-to kanji translation app. I sent Pierre-Phi fan mail after a year or so of using it. I love all the different ways to look up words and the stroke order animations and the example sentences.
The new update is vibe coded garbage
It looks like trash, it’s harder to navigate, so much of it was clearly written with an LLM. Why did you change it?
Great app with one issue
This app has been a tremendous help for learning Japanese over the years and, for the most part, works really well. There is, however, a problem with translations of example sentences being cut short (mid-sentence), so it would be amazing if that could be fixed.
Cannot draw Kanji for search.
This app has omitted one of, IF NOT the most, important feature: draw a kanji to search for it. This feature is essential for any Japanese dictionary app since most people would be searching for kanji meanings to understand the words and verbs used in Japanese language. This is a near failure-level mistake by the developer and should be added immediately for this app to be any useful. Currently it is completely useless for beginners who don't know the radicals of the kanji composition. Drawing is the best feature of having an app on a smartphone. Why would you leave a feature that's so obviously must-have in an app?
Plante au "splash-screen"
Pour une raison inconnue l'application plante dès son installation, au moment de l'écran de titre. 10 secondes sans signe de vie, puis plantage. Test realisé sur Ipad 3 64go.
The best!
Used before google translate and I’ll continue to use forever! Absolutely the best Japanese dictionary in all my years of study.
What did you people do?
The old interface was perfect, new version is terrible. This is a travesty and I’ll be looking around for other options.
Love it
I love this app, have used it for years. But please update it to be optimised for the bigger iPhone screens. Looks weird on the 5.5 inch screen and the keyboard is stretched and pixelated.
Imiwa contains serious errors.
There are serious errors in some of the transliteration of the Japanese sentence examples into Romaji. I have contacted Jim Breen about this. He was very helpful and said that Imiwa is not his but is merely 'based on' his original dictionary and that these errors are probably caused by machine translation. The title page does indeed say 'based on'. No Japanese speaker would ever make such errors. However, they are very confusing to beginners in particular. There is a warning/disclaimer on the support website that the database contains many such errors. Imiwa has many good reviews but I wonder whether these reviewers really know Japanese. Imiwa can be useful but I suggest extreme caution in its use, as does its support website. It is good for its audio pronunciation and has and many good points but, if you are not an expert speaker, be very careful and check with a native or expert speaker.
Amazing! BUT...
I've been using this app for years. As a foreigner living in Japan and studying Japanese it's irreplaceable. The best part of the app is it's a ability to save vocabulary in lists, but recently this has not been working as it used to. Now if I make a list, it seems to have saved it, but the next time I close and open the app it will be completely empty. Please, please could you fix this!
