This app stinks
You can’t see photos and the search engine is horrible on this app
Ghost content. Hard to navigate the site.
I get an e mail with an interesting article. When I select I get send elsewhere and cannot find the article. Painful.
Wish they’d figure it out
I’ve been a longtime subscriber and would read cover to cover. The app just seems harder to find the content I like. Why do I have to go to the website to find the gear guide? How will I know it’s out? Really wish they’d make it more user friendly because most of the content is still good - it’s just hard to find.
Convenient for saving and reading articles, frustrating to use or provide links
It’s nice to have a dedicated place for all of Outside’s articles on my phone but two big criticisms. 1. The search function is just terrible. It’s better than the website, but wish there were more filters to refine a search. At least the first results aren’t from 1998 and unrelated to what I was searching for unlike the website. 2. When I open links from Outside’s newsletter, they open automatically in my browser rather than the app. And there’s not a prompt to open the article in the app. Similarly, when I’ve linked to recipes in my family’s meal plan from the app, and accessed the meal plan from another device to click on the link, rather than sending me to the website on the laptop without the app, I was redirected to a link to download the app. It seems like the website and app are pulling from different sources since there’s no crossover. I’m not a tech-savvy person or designer, but it seems like there should be something in the links that sees if you have the app, and if so opens the app and if not opens the website, similar to Instagram (hate that I used that positively).
Interesting Content
I enjoy reading articles that align with my personal interests. Keep at it.
What is the Point?
What is the deal with this app? I downloaded the app to find more coverage of the 2026 Tour de France, since I enjoyed the articles from Velo writers I found through Google searches, yet the coverage that shows up in my feed is dated back to 2021! Searches only provide coverage that reaches 2025. Am I missing something? I have always been a fan of Outside magazine but this app is a mess. It’s not even sub-par; it’s horrible. I do hope the developers give it some serious attention and bring it up to date.
Now it is usable with the iPad
Part of the text is cut off on the right side of the screen. It‘s impossible to read. Update: version 1.5 fixed the issue mentionned above. Thanks!
Bummed
I got outside+ because I liked the training advice, like four weeks to sending and finger training and how to get better foot work. Now I can’t find any of that information. What happened?
It was a 5
I’ve really enjoyed reading and catching everything on the app. But this week, it’s decided to quit every time I attempt to open it. Yes, it’s up to date and yes, I’ve reloaded it.
Inspiring
Because no matter how much you accomplish there are people who push harder
Love the content
Outside really needs to get their app organized. When I have a notification on the app icon that there is a message or new news story I might interested in, and then click on the app to open it, I see no link or reference to the “new” story. All I get sometimes is a story that I have already read and in some cases it’s several months old. Logically one would think when opening an app that is delivering news, the most recent stories would appear and then in descending order the older stories. Not with the Outside app. Really annoying 😕
Great content. But…
Love outside and all of their content they offer. But…I wish the app had a way to sort the articles in chronological order by date they were published.
?
Good articles, but why isn’t the app formatted for IPads? Seems like something that should have been done a while ago.
Formatting issue
I love the app use it before, tho on the iPad mini it cuts off half of the article’s consistently. It’s frustrating going back to reading on safari for now.
Terrific!
Everything I want to use and read is right here.
Worst app I have
I want to love this app. I have read Outside affiliated articles for years and was stoked when they created an app vs needing to use a browser. But this app is just terrible. It will show me the same articles over and over again (half the time my google feed shows me new or old articles I’ve never seen before the app does). If I was halfway through reading and stop suddenly, it becomes impossible to find unless I can remember the specific name of the article to search. The algorithm definitely does not understand what I enjoy reading. I would absolutely NOT pay for this if it didn’t come with Gaia because I actually use Gaia.
Content seems pretty good
—-Updating my review from 2 stars to 4— Received quick turn around from the developers, and the issue was quickly resolved. Great work from the Dev team! Developers need to fix a bug where the app doesn’t properly detect screen size, and half the article gets cut off
Bad content
The app hasn’t crashed, however, the articles have terrible writers, they cite studies with links studied not related to the authors point, making things political that don’t need to be, and gear lists that consistently only have women’s gear. It is not a outdoors app, it is a city folk, females opinion app.
Good Content but Poorly Organized
Please improve how articles are organized. To access the category filter, I have to scroll through outdated content (some posts are more than a month old) and articles that aren’t relevant to my interests. The category buttons should be at the top, and the latest articles should appear first. The current format makes the app seem stagnant.
Awesome but.
I love the app. I was hooked on their channel and their programs were inspiring and informative. My favorite recreational activities are cycling, hiking and kayaking. But all of the sudden they went of the air. So I tried desperately to find out about where could I watch my shows. So I downloaded this app which is filled with fascinating articles and blogs. But there’s nothing about kayaking. I also subscribed to the magazine. But again, nothing on kayaking. Other than that I love the app and that’s why I gave it five stars. _ Burtart1
Junk App and Publication
What a waste. I’ve subscribed to Outside for 35 years. I just cancelled. This app experience is a horrible joke, and the reporting has gone downhill after they laid off and fired most of the editorial team and their star journalists. Reporting is now meek and lacks the investigative authority they once carried. No longer will they take politicians to task for their failings in the Outdoor space. The reviews seem to cheer for all and fail to take a position of which product is best. Sure seems like Outside is targeting the lowest common denominator, seeking clicks rather than meaningful journalism, and pandering to the right wing and their advertisers rather than producing for their audience and customers. Shame on Robin Thurston for ruining a stalwart American journalism.
Update from prior review re crashes
Thank you developers! App is working now and I’m able to log in and read articles from various Outside publications.
You wimp!
Whenever I read about adventures in Outside it seems like unless it’s Patagonia or Denali it’s not worth writing about. Always OMG!! It’s EPIC!! I have to work so they’re just dreams that will probably never happen. I’d like a little more for us mortals.
Access to loads of articles but…
…the user interface when reading an article could use an update or two. Any chance you can include scroll bars so you can see how long an article is and track your progress? It would also be nice to be able to zoom in on pictures. Those seem like two basic interface elements to include in any reading app.
Super enjoy my Outside Mag subscription
One of only a few paid subscriptions I have. Thoroughly enjoy the content!
Screen rotation
Installed app and signed in. After app opened the orientation of article I wanted to read would not rotate. Garbage! I subscribed to Outside+ with Gaia gps. Should allow me to use the trailfork app as an included benefit but app would not let me log in. Chatbot help said I should change password. Why would I want to change password and update every app and login associated with the outside+ family of content? Total scam I say! I feel like they make it difficult so I can’t use the content I have paid for. I asked for a refund and they simply said no, that all they could do is not auto-renew in a year. So I have paid for a year of Gaia gps. And a bunch of extras I can’t use Avoid at all costs
So excited, now so disappointed
I was so excited to purchase the all-access subscription, what with the Velo magazine, plethora of videos - especially gravel bike related - and Trailforks access. So it is very disappointing that the iOS apps running across my two iPhones, three iPads of various ages, all crash when the videos are more than trailer length.
Was fine until the last month
The app worked well for me for the first 3 months or so, but last month it started saying I wasn’t connected to the internet, and so it won’t load anything. There have been 3 successive updates but it still won’t work, doesn’t matter if I am in wifi or cellular.

The App Crashes
This app isn’t working. It crashes when you try to open.
Weird Format
I like outside magazine when it’s in magazine form. The articles are edited in a way that allows me to digest easily and also read in a manner that an editor thought a lot about. Having some random articles in my feed really detracts from this and I feel like I’m missing out on all the different articles.
Was ok not great now unusable
Was always an ok app. Some usabilities proposed by many have been brushed off in lieu of being considered and potentially implemented. An example is the feed not being relevant for the publication of interest. In lieu of letting the user either select publication upfront ( not down toward the end of the app) you have to scroll all the way down etc. The app could use two view: subscribe and for you for example, that way one doesn’t have to do multiple scroll and click to get to it content. That said, now the app is not working at all since last release and always says : we crashed. It is not the first time a release does that. It is sad that this is happening the week of Kona- woman only!!!!!
Great Magazine
Keeps me occupied on slow days. I look forward to a daily read from Yoga Journal. Tons of short and long articles, videos and information on a variety of topics. It’s like having a supportive friend. Thank you!
Awful App & AppleTV Browser
The design of the apps is atrocious. It’s incredibly difficult to find programs. The presorted themes don’t indicate if it’s a film or a 2 minute episode, and the episodes don’t ever indicate the series. Looking at the AppleTV app right now, under Other I could select Ep1 (pic of runners) or Ep1 (picture of different runners) or Ep 6 (fella in front of a community garden)…why is this such a bum design? I find it frustrating that it’s difficult to find something later when it appeared to be something worth coming back to. Also, the app does not let you save shows to watch on the road, so you’ll always need data to use it.
Poor quality app, not iPad specific
It’s useless trying to read this on my 12.9 inch iPad. Or any iPad. It’s a phone sized app. Nobody wants to use this on an iPad. It’s not that hard to make it work with an iPad so this is just laziness.
Stop Spoiling The Tour De France
I like getting notified by Outside+ but could y’all quit ruining the Tour de France with your annoying push notifications?!?? For crying out loud include a link but just say “Catch up on todays tour” instead “man can you believe pogacar lost the tour today?”
Daily destination for adventure
This app is my go to for a daily dose of inspiration and news in climbing, cycling, adventure and more. I check the news apps and get depressed, I check social media and get insecure, I check Outside+ and I get inspired to get outside and get after it. All the best outdoor and cycling publications in one place.
Try to cancel plus & best of luck
I just want to cancel plus, again, but all I get are canned responses. Trailforks was $2 a month, now it’s $80 a year for garbage I don’t want.
Too many publications in one app
I subscribed to Outside+ for the Velo cycling coverage. The articles are in this app, but they’re scattered about with articles from other Outside publications. It’s cumbersome. I just want to see Velo articles. The app needs a Settings feature to let users see just what they want to see. A separate app for each publication would be far more user-friendly.
Horrible app
Extremely buggy, unable to change video quality even though that seems to be a feature. Not optimized for performance on iPhone. Needs a complete rework.
Getting Better
Appreciate the ability to bookmark now. I had given 1 star. It’s up to a 3. Why only 3? Because I’ve gotten emails for years & get magazine through Apple. There’s very little difference. Still hanging in there, though.
