Amazing
I love my Birdbuddy! The quality is wonderful and I love that it can identify the different birds. It truly makes me happy to watch them so closely!
“family member live access” is a $98.99/year paywall in disguise.
Bird Buddy sells a $239.99 smart bird feeder. The app sends a notification saying a family member has requested livestream access, with an “Approve access” button. Tapping Approve does not grant access — it opens a subscription paywall for $98.99/year. Nothing before the tap indicates the feature is paid. The flow is designed so a family member makes the request and the buyer only discovers the cost after attempting to approve it. This is a dark pattern.
Solar Panel Issues
Since I open the box in Dec 2025 the solar panel has not worked properly.
Too many notifications!!
Even with the “smart” notifications, there are TOO MANY annoying notifications! I will look in the app when I am ready! If I don’t open the app on the first notification of a bird sighting, I will get several more notifications within the next 15 minutes for the same sighting! One notification is enough! These pushes need to be rate limited. This is ridiculous.
Was better before AI
This app used to make decent identifications of all birds and the occasional squirrel. Now it will only automatically identify birds if you pay to upgrade, otherwise I need to tell it to identify the bird for me. Half its functionality has been downgraded so the company can say it uses AI…
Great feeder
Enjoy the feeder in the morning while I drink our coffee and take pictures.
Need serious work
I have the bird buddy pro. Filling the feeder spills 1/4 as much as you get in the feeder. The provided hanger has the feeder at about a 30 degree angle. Camera is within 20 feet of 2 different nest WiFi’s and I have to reinstall the camera anytime I want to view. Yeah, great picture but it’s not supposed to be a new part time job. If I bought this instead of receiving it as a gift I would return it. I could build a better one cheaper. Nice materials and nice camera. That’s it. Open the app and I see what’s happening at someone else’s feeder but not my own. Why isn’t my camera the first thing I see I. The app. Can’t view anything on my own camera. And support is non existent. The answers on the site go nowhere except how to set it up. No phone number, no email, no help.

Good quality product but only one device can view the live stream at a time unless you pay a hundred dollars a year! Not worth it and very disappointing!!!
Never stays connected
If you like watching the circle spin endlessly, this is the app for you. Does not connect to wifi without a bunch of steps that go so slow you get irate. Birds are not that attracted to it anyway. Try a different brand. This one has too much AI stuff to try to make it fancy it just slows it down to being unusable.

Ruined birdwatching, horrible app
I don't understand how this has good reviews and I think a lot of them are fake. I have the birdfeeder and the app and this is a terrible product. It takes forever to load the livestream even if you lower the quality which you shouldn't have to do. I often can't get it to load at all or it freezes. It almost never tells me when there's a bird at my feeder which is the entire purpose of this thing. I have it on the highest setting to send me the most amount of postcards and I constantly see birds on my feeder and I haven't gotten any kind of alert. Sometimes they'll sit there for five or 10 minutes and I get nothing. Or I'll get an alert five minutes after a bird was there so I can't check it out live. This is seriously a horrible product and I can't at all recommend it. It is ruining birdwatching for me.
Additional content needs UX improvements
App is crashing when I browse the Collections list of birds, specifically when I am in the E’s. It would be helpful to be able to jump to the different letters rather than having to scroll all the way through the alphabet to browse a specific letter.
Money grab now
I used to love my Bird Buddy, it was fun and I loved seeing the various visitors. But after a few updates many standard features (such as auto identifying) are now blocked and hidden behind costly subscriptions. We used to be able to ignore certain visitors but now you can’t do that unless you pay an exorbitant subscription after already paying a ton for the feeder itself. I didn’t mind the premium on the feeder since the built in features were worth it, but now those features cost extra and the feeder still costs the same… you can’t have it both ways, if you want us to buy into the subscription then the feeder should be half the cost it is now, otherwise go back to providing the same features you used to. I would not recommend anyone buying a Bird Buddy now, I’d say to look at the much cheaper alternatives.

Hard to use, very expensive membership plans and not possible to cancel in the app at all!

Not a good gift, deteriorating experience
I WOULDN’T BUY BIRDBUDDY AS A GIFT! Update: I just had some deep thinking and felt compelled to further downgrade this app to one star 1️⃣ ⭐️ Overall, I’ve enjoyed using the feeder and app but standard features are now behind THE PAYWALL. Previously, the captured videos were automatically labeled with the species identified. You now have specifically request identification. This is frustrating because, if the species are screened and identified, the app will ignore species you choose to ignore. Why would you want to ignore? Well, I don’t need 20 videos of Cardinals and House Finches every day. I prefer to focus on birds I don’t see as often. If you want the old features back, it’s simple. Just pay for a subscription. So, you may not want to give Birdbuddy as a gift because what you’re actually giving is a MONTHLY BILL. This is noteworthy because the feeders are expensive to begin with.
A wonderful hobby
UPDATED REVIEW 6/30/26: I love my Birdbuddy. It has awakened an interest in birdwatching that I've never suspected I would enjoy so much. The camera takes gorgeous photos, and is very reliable. I had another brand of camera feeder before, and it was very frustrating because livestream rarely worked, and it would take a video even if a leaf or shadow moved near it. BirdBuddy is the best. I do hope the developers will continue to improve the app. Overall, it works very well - but several features are urgently needed. I would ask for two features to be added as soon as possible: 1) I urgently need to be able to delete the two bird nicknames I created. I'm not enjoying that as much as I thought I would, and there is no way to either edit/change or delete those nicknames. 2) I very much like to keep my collected videos sorted and labeled properly, but sometimes I make mistakes, and there is no way to edit the species classification either I or the Birdbuddy app assigned to the photo/video before I saved it. Please, please add these capabilities soon.
Obnoxious Notification System
I like this app in concept and I like checking on the birds but there is no way to stop the constant notifications without turning them off all together. I’m getting 20 notifications an hour about the same house finches, even with the Smart notifications toggled on which are supposed to help.
Not what it used to be
Seems to misidentify birds that it had no problem with in past years. Some glitch with recent database upgrades?
Glad we have it
My husband gave me this as a Christmas gift and I was very annoyed so he set it up and said give it a try and I have to say I have enjoyed every single moment since. We actually are going to get one for the front of the house and we’ve given two as gifts already definitely worth getting.
Misses SO many birds
I love the ability to connect with nature, but Multiple times a day, I see all sorts of birds at the feeder that I don’t get any postcards for. Not to mention, I’ve constantly got a notification in-app that shows me nothing. The competitors apps work much better, which is disappointing considering how long Birdbuddy has been in the game.
A birdwatching must!
Birdbuddy is absolutely fantastic! It is a must for bird watchers. We now know the species and numbers of birds in our yard. It is educational too through its AI integration. The only issue is they the user interface is very crowded and seemingly unorganized. If the UI were better and cleaner, it would by 5 stars.
Parts broken in App
I was really enjoying BB suddenly out of nowhere you can’t send a BB TV video to anyone, the file is not a proper video file. Please fix the App.
Love seeing birds but the software needs work
This is my second bird buddy, the first house was destroyed by squirrels.. RIP. The camera on the newer one is excellent. The AI software is worse at identifying birds than the older version. The option to dress up your bird is weird, I don’t use it. Compared to how the app used to be, I feel like the upgrade is actually a downgrade- minus the picture quality.
Best hummingbird feeder
I love how the app lets you share with family and keep a collection of the birds you get. I love how it saves videos and lets you name the birds.
Hid features behind paywall
When I first got Birdbuddy, it was great but now I can’t filter out unwanted sightings because it’s no longer automatically tells you what kind of bird is on the feeder. Shameless cash grab and it amounts to a bait and switch.

AI is not intelligent
I have had my Birdbuddy for years, the new AI is constantly either getting the bird wrong or listing it as Unrecognized, the bird identification worked much better before AI was added. I have stopped correcting it as it’s too much work and becoming less enjoyable to use. Unfortunately next step will be to cancel my subscription.
Video Quality
The video quality is poor especially to others we see in the community. Blurry and jerky movements. Stills are of good quality.

BB got greedy
I loved my BirdBuddy in the beginning, however, core features such as automatic bird ID are now behind a paywall. After paying $200+ for a bird feeder, I have no interest in paying extra for a subscription. I used to love getting notifications letting me know who was at the feeder. Now I just get generic notifications with additional steps to see which species are there. I rarely even check the app anymore. The downgrade in features previously offered is extremely disappointing.
Bird Buddy Keeps Getting Better
Since the start,the Bird BuddyTeam has been working to make their great idea, to take fantastic pictures of feeder visitors, a reality. It’s like a giant science project, deploying bird sensors in lots of different environments. Now they are working through the realities of doing field work in low light, cold temperatures, spotty wifi connections, changing backgrounds, and squirrel territory. Every month there are awesome improvements, and now it even takes video ! Can’t wait to see all the spring visitors during the migration. Great App!
I want to love this thing
Okay, so I love having a feeder with a camera. That part is great. Whats not great is the AI - every single postcard I get is mislabeled. They also charge you more to see the “faster” birds, and if I’d known that I would have gone with a different company. Nothing more annoying than your app telling you a cool bird visits around 6 am, but you’ve never seen a postcard of it so you have to guess if it’s actually correctly ID’d a frequent visitor but won’t show it to you because you have the basic plan or if the AI camera was so consistently wrong it’s interpreting the same song sparrow as a downy woodpecker again. I spend more time changing the ID on visitors than I do enjoying the postcards of them. At this point just drop the AI aspect, charge one flat fee instead of a premium tier for faster birds and let us ID them because we’re changing all your terrible IDs anyways. If a sparrow turns around it does not become a starling. The livestream option is fun.
Almost great
I do really like the app, there’s room for improvement for sure. Sometimes the identification is off or wrong, other times I can see birds at the feeder and never get a notification or a postcard. The postcards are not the best either most of them are blurry or the back of birds. I also thing that the app itself has some odd features like the editing of postcards to add hats and scarves lol it’s just not for me. Overall the app works but it’s not as user friendly as I think it could be.
Best Mother’s Day present ever
This bird feeder given me lots of joy. I love that I have this new job of taking care of their feeder. I did find I had to add a few accessories to make it work better for my visitors. I got a ledge extender, I bought a baffle to keep the squirrels away, and the seed catcher to keep the messy birds from spread, spreading the seed all over my lawn! Thinking of saving up for the hummingbird version.
No longer identifies automatically?!
We just set up our Birdbuddy and were enjoying the automatic bird identification. Now apparently it is behind a pay wall? We bought it specifically for that feature and it is rotten when a company takes away something that was a selling point to begin with.

Why on earth do you not let users customize notifications?
All you can do is pause notifications for a fixed length of time, the max being one week. Not even food delivery apps are this annoying. Why on earth can I not customize what types of notifications I want, and permanently turn off certain types? Guess I’ll just tell iOS not to allow any notifications from the app.
Too expensive
So I have to pay $90 per year, just so my family can stream a video from my feeder? As a dev, I could build my own crappier one for less money, but I’d never have to pay any fee ever. The app is nice at least.
I love the feeder
I love the feeder. It doesn’t always notify when I have a bird and the same bird came more than once yesterday and it identified it as 2 different birds. I also get a few that can not be recognized… even so some of them have already visited.
Too much locked behind sub
I can’t invite my other family members in the house to connect to the camera without having to pay a subscription free. That’s insane. This is not a cheap device and I expect at least to have my wife also be able to use it. Greedy.
Love The Idea But Bird Buddy App Needs Work
I have had my bird buddy for two weeks. My feeder is plagued by squirrels. The app should be modified so you can view all pictures taken in one notification at the same time then select which ones to delete or delete all. It is too time consuming to review each one and then delete . It would also be great to be able to modify the frequency between postcards taken so there aren't as many duplicate shots. I have turned off postcards until I get my squirrel issue solved.
Hardware is amazing, app is brutal
The bird buddy works extremely well - but the app UX has a terminal case of cutesyness, and is almost impenetrable. I just want to save photos and videos, and share them. I don’t know what a “private collection” is, I don’t know what “postcards” are. Arrgggh
Let’s go app updates!
We got one for Xmas and for weeks refused to charge. Multiple devices, computers & cables… reset router, nada. Then it just worked! Worked great for 3 weeks, went to sleep one Thursday night with over 80% charge… then would not wake up. Same charging dance … nada. Put it back outside in the feeder connected to solar roof - it works!! Damned if it will only charge from the solar roof. Serious thoughts of returning it… but it’s just so dang… addictive! The app, well, yes, a bit clunky but hoping this version released today has some refinements. I’d like to be able to only see MY gallery. Sure other feeder birds are cool, but I’m most interested in who’s at MY feeder. Overall, looking forward to seeing the new and fabulous birds as migration season continues!

Won’t connect to app
Bought this as a gift. I have tried so many times to complete setup. I have used home wifi and my hotspot. I can connect the device to my home internet and hotspot, but the connection to the bird buddy account always fails. Ready to give up because I haven’t heard back from support.

Just got my Bird Buddy and started to use the app. It’s not bad, but improvements are required. Love the photos and I like the notifications.
Good concept but not quite there
Got my BB as gift. Like the idea but not working well for me. First, the squirrels are devouring my feed. Knew this might be issue but the app makes it even more annoying. I get notifications every 2 mins of another sighting of the same thing. More squirrel. Each one requires many clicks to review and clear. If I ever got a real bird, would never know as it’s mixed with dozens of squirrel sightings. The app should be able to know I don’t care about squirrels anymore and ignore.
Difficulty
We had 3 bird buddy's gifted this Christmas. Two of them are still having difficulty getting them working. Mine eventually linked and I am loving the birds I see. I tried to help the other two get hooked up but was not able to. Instructions snd troubleshooting need to be better described
