What people like
- The art style looks really stylish and nice.
- It feels relaxing when you get into it.
- Unlocking new features keeps the game fresh.
What they complain about
- App gets stuck on the loading screen.
- Tutorial does not explain how to play.
- Many levels require guessing instead of logic.
marking areas
There is no feature for marking areas where clouds may be present
Tutorial that isn’t
I don’t understand why we have a tutorial, and then go into story mode that has symbols that never came up in the tutorial and no pattern of whether or not that symbol is good or bad in the real game. Under cooked concept for sure.
Music and sounds
It’s not fair that after slogging through and completing every level - all 70 levels — I have only unlocked 11/16 tracks and 4/7 fx loops in the Sound Room (music and atmospheric fx player).
Great concept, poor gameplay
Everything about the concept of this game is decent. However, unlike traditional Minesweeper which relies on logic, the levels here require guessing. It is impossible to complete a puzzle on the first try without making multiple guesses. I would love to see the design of the handmade puzzles adjusted so that they can be solved purely through logic.
Fun but not intuitive
I loved playing Minecraft way back when so was happy to see a similar game. I just wish there was something to decipher what everything means - the popcorn box at the top as numbers under it but I don’t know what they mean. I tapped in it and then it reset the game. This game needs more instructions!
Skip it
Mandatory tutorial that fails to explain why there are different kernel icons. Why is there money… how do I spend it? Frustrating and dumb
Really enjoyable but missing some key functionality
This is like minesweeper but with unlockable features, like marking mines and extra chances. Most of these features are great, but some are sometimes annoying and would benefit from the option to deactivate some of the Stall-unlocked items (e.g. the Inspector Shades soft-select: handy when I’m tired and don’t want to hit the wrong kernel by accident, but an unnecessary hurdle the rest of the time). For me, the main frustration is that the 5min pomodoro timer resets once you complete an arcade game, which means your break can potentially extend forever, even in an 11x11 game. For this to truly be a productivity brain break, as the pomodoro timer implies, I would love for the timer to be maintained through multiple games, so you actually only get 5min of play time before you have to get back to work. Another feature that didn’t work as expected was that the music in the Sound Room doesn’t carry over to the background music as you play. Not a big deal, but it does mean that I don’t use my headphones when I play.
Can’t tell if bugged or not
The music sounds like three different tracks playing at once, very discordant. When I get a “sweep” on a level in the story, the results seem to be random levels getting flagged as swept, other levels being impossible to sweep, and other levels being disabled, without any rhyme or reason I can see. Maybe there’s some clever puzzle metagame here, but I don’t get that feeling. It just seems broken.
Won’t Load 😭
Worked at first and now every time I open it won’t load past the “best with headphones” screen.
Perfect
Great take on the original concept and almost overdeveloped a game off of it :)
Actually awful
Maybe the worst version of minesweeper I've ever played
A good minesweeper game… with a learning curve
This is more of a puzzle game than your traditional minesweeper faire, initially at least. I like the unlockables, I like that you unlock extra modes too. I wish there was a more obvious onboarding in the sense that flagging is behind an unlockable which is counterintuitive. I think some of the reviewers here are needlessly harsh on what is a rather novel idea, I’m keen to see how this game improves in time.
Can’t do ANYTHING
When I opened the app for the first time, it worked, it was great, but then after words, the app was frozen on the “best with headphones” screen. I tried waiting, and I did NOTHING, fix this now please.
Buggy Arcade Mode
Really enjoyed the storyline portion of this game. However, the arcade mode—that provides endless gameplay—is insanely buggy. Random kernels are unable to be popped, and it makes it way more difficult than it needs to be. Probably will delete this app.
Minesweeper I’ve always wanted.
Huge fan of minesweeper. Hype for the sequel was immeasurable. (In all honesty, DO NOT GET THIS GAME IF YOU HAVE A WALNUT BRAIN)
The idiot cousin of minesweeper
Imagine taking a game that is perfect and making it more difficult to play and then adding a story line to it that makes NO SENSE!!! The developers of this game should be banned from ever making an app game again. How Apple thought this was a good addition to Apple Arcade I will never understand. Minesweeper is a simple game. It doesn’t need the extra frills. If you’re going to add more at least make it easy to understand. This game feels like it was made in another language translated, code and all, from English to another language and then partially back to English. That is how bad this dumpster fire is. Side note I have played minesweeper since the early 90s when it was released.
Está bueno pero…
Todo está bien pero es que el juego me dice +9 y es muy simple y las otras reseñas en serio dicen que ¿Que es buscaminas?. Bueno eso es todo y amo los dibujos
Not really Minesweeper
Minesweeper was a very simple but addictive game. As long as you kept your concentration you could win. This game is quite different. First, the logic of the basic gameplay is MUCH more complicated. Some of the taps/reveals are simple logic and you are certain whether it is a popped kernel or burnt kernel (explodes). Some of the reveals you will know but the logic is much more complicated than Minesweeper. Rather than simply looking at a box with a number and the surrounding squares in this game you must consider entire areas of the board and numerous possibilities. In many cases you don’t know with with certainty and you have to start considering the probabilities of you revealing a burnt kernel and then just guess and hope. At the beginning of each board you must randomly reveal numerous kernels just to get to a point where you can start using logic and often times you hit a burnt kernel and explode. So all together you lose probably 20%-30% of the games just due to unavoidable bad luck. Beyond this there is a very short tutorial that tells you nothing more than the most basic gameplay. Other than that you are left on your own. There is a “story” as you keep winning more levels and a store where you can buy items that help you in different ways. The problem is none of this is explained anywhere and the icons used are extremely nonintuitive and in many cases cryptic or misleading. There are 3 numbers in the top right below colored circles. I finally counted and figured these were the sum of the numbers in the kernels you have popped, how many kernels you have marked as burnt, and how many kernels you have not yet revealed. The problem is this information is entirely irrelevant in helping you win the game. The user interface was extremely frustrating and the background music just droned on and on until I finally couldn’t take it anymore and shut the sound off completely. I tried playing for 3 hours and spent half that time on the internet looking for explanations of how the game was played or what a certain icon did. The game might be good if you love Minesweeper type games and don’t mind spending many hours trying to figure out how the game is played. You have to be able to tolerate losing often as many reveals are simply pure random guessing or guessing based on probabilities. After 3 hours of frustration I gave up. Too much work, too much losing, not enough fun.
Meh
The levels are predetermined. You can, and will, hit a ‘mine’ on your first turn. Far too often there are multiple potential solutions in which it becomes a guess to avoid which kernel is the bad one.
This Review needs to be read.
Corn go pop, that hole game :)
DONT GET
Started off with high expectations, but right when I load in, I can’t unmark a place I marked which is so stupid I hate this game.
Looks great, some room for improvement
I actually really enjoy this — it’s relaxing and stylish. There are a few things I would like to see: -Rather than automatically revealing all of the mine locations after losing in Story Mode, give us a button that will show us the finished map -A little bit more explanation of the mechanics. I still don’t quite know what’s happening with the countdown mine that turns blue -Dark mode, where the background is black and the corn is yellow But this is the first time I’ve actually bothered to learn minesweeper, and the aesthetics have a lot to do with that. Well done!
Okay, not great
Liked the game, not intuitive to figure it out first, I’ve finally beat all the main story levels, but can’t figure out how to unlock the achievements, don’t understand the music shack, and not much else to do after beating the main story.
All Style, No Substance
The game's beautiful, but gameplay makes no sense.
Just worse Minesweeper
I like the music, art direction, vibes, etc — it’s al great on that front, but past that there’s not much here. It’s slow and it stutters, when it has no reason to. Furthermore, some of the mechanics don’t even work properly! For instance, opening up a “free” region on the board won’t open it entirely, and it’ll neglect to show the numbers for the corners. It would be a really fine take on minesweeper if the technical elements were fixed, but as it stands it’s hard to play. Just play minesweeper instead
Schlechte Einführung…
…und manche Grafikentscheidungen ohne spielerischen Sinn und deshalb verwirrend. Halt schon ein typisches Low Budget Indiegame. Aber wenn manˋs mal verstanden hat natürlich addictive.
Bugged
The first time I played the game was fun! But since I closed the app the first time, if I try launching the app, it will not start the game, stuck on the “Best with headphones” page. Only way to access the game again is by redownloading, but continues to have the same problem.
Great game, if I could play
Every time I try to open the game it stays on the loading page. I’ve tried all the things: restarting my devices, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, etc. and it’s the same every time.
Headphones?
Just a minesweeper game with fewer features. Nice look. Sound/music is so bad it can’t be on purpose. Do I not “get” the game?
Please stop the music.
Just started playing. I enjoy the concept of the puzzle. In the setting I’ve chosen no music. But every time you play the music is on. You have to go back unselect, then select no music. Apart from that I’m still trying to get past the first puzzle!!! Hahah.
Fun concept, but major bugs ruin the experience
I enjoyed the game the first time I played it right after downloading—it’s fun and has potential. However, after that first run, I haven’t been able to play it again. Now it just gets stuck on the opening screen that says “Best with headphones” and never loads past that point. It’s frustrating, especially since I was excited to keep playing. Please fix this issue—it really ruins what could otherwise be a great game. Devs, hope someone takes a look at it soon.
Won’t open
I was having fun, but now the game won’t open
I don’t get it.
Instructions please. I know Minesweeper & love it, but this isn’t fun.
Not sure what the thought was
I’m not sure if this is a non English speaking project but the item names made no sense to me, the UI was not intuitive (what’s up with the settings? Use words please…) and the gameplay doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s just minesweeper with fewer options and pre made levels called “story” as though minesweeper could have a story? The burning kernel noise is really annoying, the app claims to be best with headphones but I don’t understand why you would listen to the sounds at all. They are not especially high quality…. Music is very generic, sound effects are irritating. What is the intended audio component of the game? I feel like I’m missing seeing entirely…
Good but needs improvement
Been playing this game for a couple of months. Got through the first 40 levels and pretty fun but there are many times where you need to make educated guesses (especially the first few moves of each puzzle). I am very confused on the in game market. I’ve bought half the store but honestly it doesn’t seem like half of the perks work. Like to get more coins. I feel like I have gotten the came amount of coins before buying those perks. The perk for highlighting corn doesn’t seem to work either. Also when you popped a burnt corn the flashing is very distracting and it’s hard to focus on the rest of the puzzle. Lastly, I play on the Apple TV and it’s very laggy (have to use a gaming controller) and freezes many times. I honestly do think this game has a lot more potential especially with the game modes and different challenges that come along as you go through the main stages. Hope that an update comes out and fixes a few of these bugs and comes w some gameplay/visual improvements.
“Minimalist” seems to be just an excuse to create poor mechanics, no instructions
All the other 1 star reviews describe the issues perfectly
Frustrating interface
Selecting a level is frustrating because the Home Screen is so unintuitive and slow to load between animations. No way to mark kernels to avoid from the very first level is very annoying.
fun game but can’t move on
I enjoyed the game but every time I close the game I end up going back to level 3
What is happening!?!
I think you need experience with minesweeper to have any idea on how to play this game. The “tutorial” was far different then level one and I have no desire to search through YouTube videos to learn about a game that doesn’t bother to write something as basic as a useable tutorial.
It’s cool but..
I like the game itself, but after using it a couple of times the game stops loading for me. I had to redownload it and even after that it still wouldn’t load up. It’s a bit glitchy when I go to mark some of the bombs, they’d grow and get stuck like that.
Great idea, great design style. Poor polishing and feature design
I like the idea and style of the game. The game seems not polished: some visual features are very visibly out of place in the current design, or redundantly blinking the whole level (as uncovered “mines”). The necessity to reclick from memory the earlier levels if you are unlucky is annoying; some levels are ambiguous.
