Best guide
Best way to discover new places and how to reach them. When the regular map doesn’t have a road BRMB knows the way.
Great, but……
3.8 still had a huge problem! The maps and data are great, with many amazing extras included. But, there is still zero waypoint management. It’s like my personal data is not important at all. Sync of my data is hit and miss especially on long outings with no service, get home not all new data syncs to the web. Waypoints are treated like an annoyance, just a jumble of names. No numbers, no folders, no filters, nothing but a list. That list is also different on the web. So if you plan to add large amounts of your own data, this is not the app for you. Probably should be 1 star really.
Mines/icons
I do a lot of exploring mines and mining and I’d love an icon to place pins for mines. I see they are available in other parts of the app but not to drop pins. So far it’s been a great app, love it. Been having some recent issues resetting my password- I got a new phone and can’t remember the old password and the server won’t connect when I try to reset it. All other websites are working on my end so I think it must be an issue on your end.
Sends unwanted push notifications
The app started sending me push notifications about “challenges”. I don’t want my maps gamified. There is no option to turn this off; I had to turn off all notifications from BRMB. I haven’t even had an opportunity to use the app yet so I don’t know if I like it other than that.
App is okay
I have the printed books and the maps and decided to try the app. It’s pretty poor overall. It’s hard to get the layers going in a useful way - but part of that might be the issues with private and crown land and crossing back and forth in my region. Sometimes it has conflicting names for the same road.
Would love a direction feature.
When ATVing on trails it would be very helpful for it to plan a route based on the trails and gave you the distance to the destination and turn directions.
Payment taken, pro plan not received
Long time customer, they recently took my payment but I did not receive pro. Tech support not reachable by phone or email… app used to be good now is a scam…. Will re rate app once issue is rectified
Crown land for BC
The only thing that could make this app better for me is if it had crown land available for BC
CarPlay useless
CarPlay offers no tracking or waypoint access totally useless contacted tech support and no response paid for Pro subscription and no 7 day free trial as advertised Totally false marketing product good for phone only
No support
The past few years the app has worked well but during this years hunt I had an issue with the tracks being saved. I’ve contacted BRMB for support and suggestions but haven’t received any response for weeks. Re-sent my request and still nothing.
Love this app
Many improvements over the years has made this our favourite map app. We were ecstatic when Apple CarPlay was finally available. We are hoping eventually that the CarPlay version will allow us to use topographical layers as it currently only shows streetview. Keep up the good work
Do not purchase
I have had this app for years including when it was considerably less expensive. Despite then happily charging my subscription for many months and me emailing them to fix issues with it not recognizing that I am a paid subscriber, they have not fixed it. I cancelled my subscription. Should have done it months ago. I have no idea how they have such a high rating overall because if you look at most of the recent reviews most are 1-2 stars. Used to be a great product and one of the few that would show crown land vs private but they have ruined it trying to monetize the hell out of it.
Advertisements
This is a great app that my adventures live by. I would be happy to update this review with 5 stars if the platform removes the random pop up adds for paying customers
No crown lands for BC?
BC is a huge outdoor enthusiast province and yet there are no maps for crownlands. I paid $9.99 and couldn’t use it the entire time I was in B.C. Super disappointing. Also app is not intuitive to use, especially the “layers”?!
Just getting used to maps
I just learned about the map books and also searched up the App. There does not seem to be a lot of subscribers and images of places. I am sure there are for some common places but it is not very obvious so I find myself switching to google. Also for places like campgrounds or places of interest there is no URL for a website. Using the map on a PC browser seems to have more detailed options … eg if you pick parks there is a drill down to select or deselect certain types of parks…. But on the IOS app you can’t drill down. anyways it’s still new for me so I need to explore more but this is my initial feelings…..Also the settings between IOS and browser are not synced which is how I noticed the settings are not as detailed on IOS. Also in browser the map defaults to BC and my system has location on, google seems to find me
Books are amazing app is fantastic
With the new CarPlay support this app just got even better. Highly recommend using this service if you do any outdoor activities
No refund for free trial
Heard some good things about the backroad maps physical copy so I was curious and bought the free trial for the app. Figured it wasn’t worth it and was planning to buy the physical book till I realized there was no option for me to cancel the free trial despite it saying it would. Checked in subscriptions and in the app itself and nothing. Basically scammed me and turned me off and I’ll be staying away from this company.
My GOD…. The ADS!!
I press a button and have to go through 3 videos. Nothing happens. Press again? 3 more videos to accomplish NOTHING. Totally infuriating. You can buy the book instead but only if you have perfect vision. I have to use the Zoom function on my phone because the maps are so small even with my reading glasses. Was hoping the app would be better? No. If I want to watch videos I will open up YouTube.
Commercials?
Every time I click on the map to move it an ad comes up. About to delete it.

The online version is absolutely fantastic
Absolute garbage
All I wanted this for was to plan a road trip. Can’t select a starting point. The ads are RELENTLESS. Six ads in the first 60 seconds - every time you press any button at all you get an ad first. Deleted within a minute of setting up my account.
Recent improvements
This app has seen major improvements. Well done! Much more stable and importing data is an asset. Web syncing works great!
Excessive disruptive ads, each ad resets map
I couldn’t even evaluate the app because the excessive ads interrupt you - but also the ads reset the map position after every ad so you have to start over. I would be happy to pay for a good app but instead have been annoyed away before I could test anything useful.
Great, but only on iOS
TL;DR: 5 Stars because the iOS version is killer, but the review is to forewarn folks that the OSX version isn't very usable. If you see BRMB on the OSX App Store, avoid it. Looks like the developer compiled and exported for OSX without testing. Maps are not scrollable and other than being able to click on a few things and search, it's relatively useless. Woud love to see a fully featured version for OSX where we could download maps for offline use to plan the day/week ahead without needing an internet connection. While I'm wishing, it would also be extremely cool if the OSX version could somehow export a file to the IOS version for use on the trail, all while offline.
Advertisement Glitch
This was a great app until the advertisements started. When I close an advertisement, the app takes me back to my location instead of leaving me on the screen I was at. Too bad, I’ll be researching a new online map book.
Excellent BRM
I have been using this app for over a year now i also got it for my daughter that’s a hunting fishing lady she also uses it for her hunting/ fishing excursions as I do aswell i highly recommend you do your self a life saver And get it $50 a year I hunt all over British Columbia i will be a loyal customer for years to come thanks for the excellent service BRM
Price Gouging. Poorly Designed OS
The interface is designed poorly with too many levels deep to access things. Also when moving the map it continually asks if you want to drop a pin, waypoint. Frustrating. The kicker though is their price gouging. They have increased the monthly rate to $10!!!! That’s $120.00 per year plus tax = $135.60 if you go the whole year! That’s simply gouging. Time will tell if enough people are willing to fork that out for this poorly designed OS. I know the company well, have bought their cards for many provinces for my GPS’s, purchased their print products as well and my experience is that they aren’t interested in their customers. You are just a number, and if it isn’t working for you or you have a question - get lost. It’s with a heavy heart that I have made the decision to stop patronizing any of their products being a Canadian company but they clearly have more money than they need and have no incentive to care about their customers.
Accurate roads
I downloaded the app and downloaded offline maps and went out on a adventure and was accurate with the overgrown roads and trails my new go to maps for seeking out new areas
Free sucks
Free version doesn’t make me want to use the pay version.

Having this available in CarPlay would be a great option. Any plans for it?
Echo Lake
Difficult to navigate the app. You need a PhD in order to find something. Local knowledge definitely required. not easy for an old man.
Canada covered crown land and more
Best app for my area around Ontario and other areas, amazing amount of beta information for trails and fishing plus more like they say. The cartography is the best I have used on a phone. Keep up great work I will keep using your Backroad Mapbooks for Cottage Country and Northeastern Ontario they are great for my truck.
Very poor first impressions
I installed the free version to evaluate if this is a product I wish to purchase but so far in the first 4 minutes I’ve had no less than 6 ads pop up full screen. This is annoying in of itself but when I close the advertisement it puts me back to my current location not where I had scrolled to. By the time I move the map back to the area of interest another advertisement is full screen in my face. Extremely annoying and off putting. Deleting the app at this point as in this day and age bombarding me with US based company advertising is certainly not welcome. Get it together people.
Was expecting more (Updated June 23/24)
Updated review…. I decided to try this app again after a bigger $ increase on Gaia app plus other issues. I have found it much more seamless and works a lot better. Looking forward to the coming soon CarPlay. Love the updates you’ve made since my first use almost 3 years ago. Only thing I’d love to see is the ability to add different colours to tracks and being able to organize tracks into folders. Already purchased to 3 year plan. Loving the new look and feel. Previous review….I was so looking forward to using this app. Took a bit to figure out how to import gpx files. Only through web app but got it done. But then the kicker. No car play? Now I understand back country it's not necessary but to anyone using it to overland or off road it's important to stream to head unit plus it's convenient to use to get to the location otherwise I need to use multiple apps. A pain. So until they add CarPlay I'll have to give this app a big no! Update.... I do know there are offline maps available which I tried. However driving off-roading having a larger screen to check where you're going is a must. Small phone screen isn't useful if hard to see while driving. Several other apps have that ability and I am currently back to those that use CarPlay. I stand by my claim that for some that no CarPlay is still no good for anyone using it how I use it.
Americans Don’t Use This
I live in Texas and when I loaded up the app, nothing showed. Nothing showed for the entire United States. The only area that had any detail was Canada. So if you live in the US there is not point in getting this app.
On the fence
Updated - App now working, no email to our original concern, but something has been updated. We have used the books for years, but wanted to try the app. Paid the $ for a year subscription, worked on our iPad but decided it’ll would be better on iPhone. Now it asks for us to pay for the subscription again every time we login. Sent message through technical support last week, still no answer. We are in the road travelling so this is very frustrating. At this point I want my money back.
Useless
I tried for the snowmobile maps , the maps are at least 5 years out of date
Best app ever!
I have been using the app for about a year now. Back in the day you were either guessing or going off of a map book. Now it’s so easy to know where you are and it takes all the anxiety out of exploring! It’s absolutely the best thing to have if you want to explore new country. I can’t recommend it more!! Thanks guys job well done!
